I started these pear trees from store bought seed (D'Anjou Pears) on 7/10/16. They are now 69 months old, or closing in on 6 years! In this video, I'll catch you up on the 2 pear trees and also show you my other pear varieties, Bartlett and Orient - which are now 7 year old trees. I'm hoping the largest D 'Anjou pear tree can FINALLY set some fruit (now that it has flowered) and finally grown enough to handle the Texas Summers and weathering it's third "winter," fighting fire blight, and acclimating to the Texas Clay. The other pear tree has finally been rescued from the dryer vent area that seems to have stunted his growth over the last several years. I have him in a pot for now but plan on finding him a final resting place soon. I planted a mango seed and a pear seed 2 years ago, and now my little nephews and nieces are enjoying the juicy fruits! Thanks to you, Rob, i followed every single step of planting the pear and mango and the trees, they are like 164 centimeters.
Awesome to see the consistent updates Rob! Someone mentioned starting a Cherry tree series, which I think would be a great addition. Another one I could think of is maybe starting a Fig Tree series as well. Ik u have ur hands full but I think it would be a great idea bc it would produce more content.
I am very good at being patient but with your videos i wish i could see updates more because i also grow from seed and get excited at the smallest progress. thanks for the new update
hello im in the uk and have 22 pear trees 7 are seed trees the only thing that changes is the size but a little tip if a pear tree in general is left to grow on its own they all will grow upwards and any new growth will also point upwards and until those branches are stable enough to hold fruit the tree will abort any pears so you could be looking at the 10th year onwards you will see pears grow throughout the growing season. its often down to us to push them steps along in a prune to help tipping the growing branches to redirect the energy back down the branches can promot fruit spurs to grow or prune the branches to outward buds will help latteral growth that will create fruiting spurs along the branches, but leaving the upright branches to grow on their own wont help fruiting as pears tend to not create fruiting on upward growth until the trees are at the higtht which they if left would be around the 10th year. i tend to prune to outward buds then at the end of the growing season i tip prune them branches and that makes the tree grow fruiting spurs for the next year.
Love pear trees. My Grandfather had a big Bartlett pear and my Grandmother always made sliced fruit leather (dehydrated slices) with the fruit every year. That was my favorite snack as a child. Those pears were delicious. I hope you get eddible fruit this year and I look forward to updates.
For the last orient, just because you got it at a nursery does not mean it is still grafted tree or if it still has a grafted part, that is what the labels says it is. Orient pear trees and also other varieties lacking sufficient sunlight depending on the rootstock may not bear pears or only a very few if they do. Your first pear gave me the impression of many seedling pears seeming to have sharp needle semi-thorn like spurs. For your location you want medium dwarfing rootstock. They will bear earlier and not get so tall. If on callery or feral hybrid stock they can get very tall. On their own roots a seedling pear can get taller than 50 ft just depending the genetics. The seedling can also live much longer. Perry pears can live for centuries. Growing from seeds if done for experimentation makes sense; but if you can afford it and want pears, buy grafted pears from a reliable source.
I think your Bartlett should be fine this year 🤞. I think you've let the first one get a bit too tall lol. You need to Summer prune it a bit more so it develops flowering spurs 😁
My D'Anjou Pears tree that I got last year will grow fruits before your because it's not from seed. That's the right way to get fruit. Your way is the tree. At least you got a tree with flower and green leafs. There is nothing wrong with that. Beside, when there is no update means there is nothing new to report. My other 2 pears from seeds can produce good fruits. That's 2 of 2 and they are Asian pears. Maybe, European pear has more genetics lottery than the Asian counterpart.
@@luni3521 The 2 Asian pears are from seeds. One of them is normal shape pear. It's large and have crispy taste. The other one is round Asian pear with medium size fruit. It took 5 to 6 years to get the first fruit.
one reason for failure of trees to bear fruit is improper tree vigor. Over vigorous trees expend all their energy in growing wood and do not produce flower buds. Typically, this occurs for two reasons: over-fertilization and over-pruning. Also, I always thought you couldnt grow fruit from store bought seeds because they are GMO or they are not open pollinated seeds. Maybe this is why you dont have fruit?

Thats a lie lol, no pear or mango trees can fruit from seed in 2 years, takes alot longer than that
What’s up Rob! Nice to see you again with some more garden videos :)
If the sun gets on those dark pots the roots will cook, mulch the top with grass and paint the pots white 👍

I can honestly say y'all have a sweet garden filled with so many different fruits. I am looking forward to seeing how they do this summer.
Great update as usual Rob. Your Mango and avacado series have me motivated

You've done a good job with your trees rob one of these days you will have fruit on all of them
Pears are a favorite of mine.

How many yours did it take for your pear trees to bear fruits? Thank you
