  • Assassin Bugs are very beneficial to a garden! They are in the Hemiptera order, which means they are a true bug. Their genus and species is the Arilus cristatus and they live in many habitats all around the world. I found these in my yard.. Yikes they look scary! Use caution if you handle them, as they can inflict a very painful bite.. and now way!.. i didnt get bit - Thank goodness!

I've been stung by one. It hurt like HELL!!! I was in pain for over four hours. It feels like pliers are squeezing the area where you are stung. It's a lot stronger than a bee or wasp sting. I've been stung by over twelve hornets at one time. That was nothing compared to being stung by an assassin bug once. It is extremely painful.

Just found some in my house along with wolf spiders and a scorpion or 3. Do they actually have a stinger? I thought they just stab you with the syringe like appendage on it's mouth.

@Kenneth Wood Years ago when I was kid living up in Northern California, we lived out in the country in a mobile home with a full deck attached and I was sitting on the deck in the dark and reached between my legs to pick up what I thought was a black cricket. I immediately started screaming from the pain of getting bit on the end of my index finger by a very large assassin bug, about the same size as a full grown black cricket, and about the same shape except black/red. I grabbed the assassin bug with my forefinger on it's mouth and my thumb on it's head like I would when picking up the black crickets I always played with as a kid facing that way. The pain was the worst I ever experienced and lasted very intensely for around 3 hours and still hurt bad for several more. My parents came running outside asking me what was wrong and I remember I couldn't tell them what happened because of the pain I was in. I'll never forget that.

I accidentally squeezed one this morning, it definitely has a stinging bite! Where it bit, gave me a blood blister & the pain was gone after about 4 hours. I have hundreds around my house. It seems like no matter where I go when I water each morning, there's almost a bug on every one of my plants! I'm sure glad to see them.

I was bitten on the finger by one of these many years ago. The pain was awful, and I screamed so loud, I'm sure it would have been heard from blocks away. I'd rather give birth with no pain meds then to go through that kind of pain again. And I still have the scar.

Good news guys! This is a wheel bug (who is in the assasin bug family) but is not a blood sucker. It is not the the kissing aka assasin bug that carries the parasites that cause chagas disease. So don't freak, although it does have a really painful bite!

I found them, here in Florida, on my front patio. We had several wasps nests that were forming and becoming aggressive. I was about to get rid of them when the assassin bug showed up and ate the wasps and their larvae. I first noticed them eating caterpillars then was surprised to see them attack the wasps.

I would say it feels a bit worse than a bee sting, but not as bad as a wasp sting, however a week later and the back of my neck is still sore if i rub or touch the area it bit me. Makes sense that they're related to sink bugs because after it bit me and I rage smashed it, I had to temporarily evacuate the basement because of the horrible smell which I would describe as indescribable.

If it had bitten your mantis it could have killed it. They have a venomous bite. It's a bit like when a coyote attacks a rattle snake. The coyote will usually win through virtue of its size and speed but if it gets bitten its a whole different story. Be careful what you feed mantis. Not everything is safe for them.

You can't be allergic to Asssassin bugs. They do not inject venom. But they have a fierce sting

+TheNecromancer6666 "Bites are initially painless but might soon itch, swell, and cause a substantial welt that can last for several days. More severe reactions range from huge, painful welts to allergic reactions, including difficulty in breathing, low blood pressure, and rapid heart rates due to anaphylaxis."

+Lori Slone Have you ever been stung by one? I have by one water living species. The initial sting hurts bad. Mean really bad. The bug essentially drills a hole into you. After some minutes it's
all over. Maybe it's possible to get the bite infected. But tgis discription is a piece of fantasy work.

+Lori Slone releases a PARASITE! in their poop after they bite..so they are VERY dangerous...the parasite can lay dormant in the body and heart muscles for years...but these things are not beneficial.

an insect exoskeleton is in fact chitin but she seems to have mistaken that for the keratin that makes up our nails and hair.

Naomi Kryształ Only the south american species. The ones in North America are thankfully free of that but their bites do hurt like hell from what I'm told.

I got stung by a similar type of assassin bug yesterday. The pain was sorta like a low voltage shock or burn. Much worse than a bee or yellow jacket. Not as bad as a cow killer/ red velvet ant. I've got stung by them too once. They're sting is serious.
