I have the 5 string version of this bad boy. Other than that, same color body, same gold hardware.
Except mine says "Bartolini" on the pickups, & "Made in West Germany" on the back :-)
Looks great man! Probably my favorite process is a full cleaning and set up when I get a new Warwick. So therapeutic :)
thanks, dude! yeah, definitely therapeutic. I remember the smell of freshly waxed wood when I first opened the case of the Thumb bass when it arrived. it's still the same soothing feeling when I clean them or do setups :)

I have a 96 Corvette Standard 5 I recently picked up that I'm planning on doing the same thing with. It currently has chrome hardware and I want to switch it to black hardware. It needs a good deep cleaning too.

Video was amazing, could've been 3 Hours would've enjoyed as well but IMO black hardware looks cheaper than mushy gold. Love Warwicks love 6 string basses ❤

@@absurdcus Your video gave me the confidence, I went for it and did it last night with 1 screwdriver and some Allen Keys :) seems like like you I took the challenge on without the proper tools...
1: I love this video, great shots and very thorough!
2: I need to clean my bass :'D
3: A tip I picked up in another video - use a bit of old t-shirt between your screwdriver and screw to preserve the grooves.

Ooh! You may be able to answer a question of mine.
I also have a '98 Warwick FNA which has the same sort of finish patina on the headstock (as opposed to plain black) as yours. Do you know why that is? I don't mind it personally but almost everyone who has looked at it has made a comment on it haha.
Great video! I enjoyed this deep dive into something so (seemingly) simple.
I guess over time it just fades a bit, you can try cleaning it with a damp cloth and maybe rub a couple of drops of lemon oil to restore the blackness a bit :)

Warwick hardware costs a fortune to replace but man does it look good when its done 👌
even though I am partial to black hardware on my basses, I must admit that I dig the look of golden hardware on natural maple streamers :D

theses old WW are beasts, those are "players", so a few dings or dents are part of their charm ! Seeing those old basses coming back to their top conditions is cool, thanks for sharing that with us !
A few points :
- when mounting screws into the wood (bridge screws or tuners screws), put a tiny amount of beeswax on the threads, the screw will be easier to mount and remove, in the future. No risk to see the screw break into the wood, which is a nightmare to fix.
- Black hardware is nice here, better than gold IMO, good choice!
If you need to replace the output jack, the black version is available too, ref SwitchCraft EP0152 BK (Thomann or another shop you like)

I know the volume control is 2-way, but can the control knob be replaced with any kind of control knob to switch between passive and active?

I think so, yeah, but honestly not sure. It's a 1998 model and I bought it used :)
Which contact cleaner have you used for preamp cleaning...?
I only used compressed air in the preamp cavity, there was no need for any contact cleaning, the pots all work fine!

Never mind, turns out it’s a Hercules one that I couldn’t find on their site.

@@absurdcus In with my own late reply here… recently came into possession of a six string Thumb BO, made in 2000. It also has a messed up bridge, so will definitely be getting replaced ASAP.
I was wondering if you have ever come into any grounding issues with older Warwicks? My ‘98 Streamer LX is fine but this Thumb has a pretty bad hum if I’m not touching the strings or any metal components.
The fret must be pulled first then oiling the fretboard. Because besides that you use tape always little amount of dirt remains!!!
no dirt leftovers on the fretboard this time!

can't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure it's a Guitar Rig 5 patch of mine blended in with the clean bass :)

I left the music out on purpose on this one, I love watching restoration videos without music and hearing the sounds of the work being done :)
I cringe every time I see someone sanding the frets to clean the oxygen-ation (patina) off. PEOPLE USE BRASSO AND AND A RAG! It comes right off and they shine like gold.
sorry about that, I read some negative stuff about the ammonia content in Brasso and brass so I guess I'll be sticking to the fretpolish paper for now.
@@absurdcus that’s interesting. Share the link. I’ve been using it for years on all my warwicks and never had an issue. I tape off the fingerboard as well. What are the negative issues? Knowledge is power
it was back in the days when the Warwick bass forum was still active, there were a couple of threads on fret care, and some users were Brasso advocates and some basically said its chemical compound is way too abrasive and corrodes the brass over time. that kind of stuck with me and sometime after I did some research and oddly enough found some negative comments on some gun forum :)) as far as I remember it was a 'don't use brasso' tagline, you can search for that on google. anyhoo, a couple of negative comments are enough for me, I've been polishing the frets this way on my main Warwick for 12 years, had no issues whatsoever.

8000 grit is not that bad, I don't do it too often. maybe once every 1-2 years. I don't do it for aesthetic reasons either so it looks shiny, I just want to get rid of the stringscratches mostly :)
