Great video gents. I switched to a NOCO lithium this summer. My 1200GSA cranks over faster than it ever did in the last four years!

It always warms my heart to see you and Pops ride together. Lost my dad when I was 14. Never got that chance.
Thanks for sharing! Enjoy that awesome new ride!

    Wow.
I don't own a DX. But was excited about the bike.
    Then I started reading.
Can you confirm the rumor that if things like the air filter, if self changed, voids warrantee? Or DESMOS belt adjustment? or DESMOS valve adjustment?
I mean, heck, reasonable riding here in New England, I could put 15K on such a nice motorcycle in a year easily, and that would be about when I need a new/cleaned air filter and that's about when the DESMOS belt needs adjusting.
For me that means a 200 mile trip to drop off the motorcycle at a certified Ducati shop, round trip, and then another 200 mile return to pick it up. That hurts a lot, in a couple places I won't mention.
If that warrantee BS is true.

Just had the pleasure of watching a certified Ducati mechanic changing an air filter on a Desert X. That's a bit of an effort. My DL1000XAL8 is easier. I just have to remove some plastic and my tank. Ducati also requires you remove the entire ECU, to get at the filter.
I also watched a DESMO adjustment. Harder than normal shims, but fine. But if you do it wrong, you can wreck the engine. And that's a major cowling removal as well.
Really waiting to see how you handle the work without the shop doing it.
Especially how you fix a clogged paper air filter at the camp at night.
Nothing I saw needed special tools, but it would be a kind of nasty on the side of the road.
    Challenges. Make Adventures.

You THINK you have been riding to the limit of the brakes, but in reality you haven’t, at least not on pavement. I have ridden for about 53 years now and thought I was pretty good at emergency braking. My K1200LT was my first ABS equipped bike. During the first 12,000 miles I owned it, I made a couple of really hard stops for deer, which we have far too many of in PA. When I took it to the dealer for the 12K service, I commented to the service manager as to how well the ABS worked in emergency stops for deer and he just chuckled and told me that I had yet to activate the ABS! The computer tracks such things and he could tell me that I had used the front brake something like 12,300 times and the rear brake nearly the same, but I had ZERO ABS activations. So, I went out shortly after than on a rainy day on a road with tar snakes and grabbed a handful of brake at about 20 MPH. I was amazed at how much braking I had been leaving on the table, particularly on wet roads as it was hard to even get the ABS to activate on wet pavement. So, I suspect you will find that you have left a fair bit of braking on the table and will now use more of that, particularly on wet roads, knowing that you have ABS as an ace up your sleeve.

How will you choose which bike to ride given that they both fulfill a similar mission? Ride the DesertX until it breaks and then ride the KLR? 😁

    Hey Mason,
No offense, I’m not much of a just watch someone else ride the street and talk and I rapidly fast forwarded to see if you talked about the service but didn’t find it.
When I saw the title, I thought it was going to be you going over a step by step oil change, air filter service.
Been curious about the Ducati. I heard the tank has to come off to access it.
890 still on order but I can get full refund on deposit if I change my mind

I have tryed a lot of saddle types, but afther a couple of houers you need to get off and rest anyway. Im going to test out the mesh as soon as it arrive in mail.
Great power on that thing, now you have to hold back on the throttle when riding with the guys👍🏻
I think old Mason are getting a ducati soon😄🇳🇴☕.

I bookended an even broader spectrum. After having a BMW K1200LT for 11 years, which at the time it was designed was a class leader in technology, I bought a KLR just to have something simpler and easier to work on. I can do a complete maintenance cycle on the KLR in about the time it takes me to remove and replace the fairings on the BMW! And a valve check on the BMW is a 3 hour job and if you need to adjust the valves, it is 4+ hours assuming you have the shims on hand, which I never do as the bike keeps needing thinner shims as the valve seats wear so it is usually a 10-14 day wait for the parts. I bought the KLR to have something to ride when the BMW is down for maintenance, but for long trips, the BMW is the cat’s meow.

What an awesome ability to ride with Dad. My KLR was horrible on my 3rd point of contact......when I got the Seat Concepts seat....game changer!

I am curious to see Old Mason’s experience with the Li battery going forward. I bought a Shorai for my K1200LT back in 2011 and thought it was the bee’s knees at first (I bought it in the spring at the start of riding season). It seemed to spin the engine a little faster and was very light. My biggest initial complaint was that Shorai made the case much smaller and used different terminals so you have to cut foam for the battery box and mess with the terminals to get the cables connected.
Then came winter. When it got below about 40 degrees the cranking got very sluggish and often that starter would stall on the first compression stroke when cold. I would have to let the bike sit for a few minutes with the headlight on to warm the battery enough to start the bike. It always started eventually, but it got to be a pain waiting to be able to start, especially if riding with others. Since Shorai recommended that their BMS-01 charger be used over the winter as it kept the cells balanced in addition to keeping the battery charged. Unfortunately, they had a firmware bug in their charger that caused it to often not come back on after a power failure. I live in rural Pennsylvania and power outages aren’t all that uncommon during winter. I did not notice that the charger had turned off during the winter and in the spring the battery was completely dead. I called Shorai and they told me how to try to salvage the battery, but to no avail. They replaced it under warranty and told me they would let me know when I could return my charger for a firmware upgrade. That was the last I heard from Shorai. I sent them several emails over the course of the summer and they went silent on me. I ran the battery 7 years until it failed to start the bike several times on my trip to Alaska. Anything below 40 degrees was iffy and the couple mornings where we found frost on our seats, we had to get a jump start. I gave the charger away for the price of shipping and will not use a Shorai again. Other companies may be better so I am curious to see how the Zero G holds up, particularly when the temps get close to freezing.

As a Desert X perspective buyer, does this Bike have an Oil cooler ??. These Ducati Engines run a bit Hot...Just wondering, cause I know the Multistrada's have an oil cooler.

Great bike IMO. Just watched Dave Darcys(MAD TV) interview with Peter Mansbridge in Australia. Lots to learn there for you. He's the first Ducati owner and first to do a cross Austrailian tour on the DesertX. Great watch.

Great ride with a old Mason. I love the banter.
Tech. Harley ended up buying back my Pan America. Too many tech issues. I missed a few rides and had to use the NOCO charger on its last ride.
They had a low mileage 2018 KTM Super Adventure R on the sales floor. I bought it.
I think the tech is somewhat dodgy on the big KTMs too but my plan is to trade it for a T-7. Maybe a 690 enduro. Preference towards the T-7. Less tech.
Take care. I imagine it’s white up there these days.
