- Voting has begun in Russia's presidential election, which is all but certain to hand Vladimir Putin another six years in power.
Ballots will be cast over three days, even though the result is not in doubt as he has no credible opponent.
Polling stations opened in the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia's easternmost region, at 08:00 local time on Friday and will finally close in the westernmost Kaliningrad enclave at 20:00 on Sunday.

Yes, it's bad that the US doesn't invite OCSE observers to its elections. I don't think anybody could argue otherwise. It's disgraceful.
However, Russia didn't invite OCSE observers either. And when they (the OSCE) tried to negotiate with the Russian Federation, starting in September 2023, they found that the restrictions placed on their observers were so crazy that there would simply be no point in coming. They would essentially have no power to observe anything, and so they would be unable to create any meaningful reports on the election. That would make the trip a waste of money.
A similar thing happened in 2021's Russian parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile, the European Platform for Democratic Elections maintains a database of fake observers - that is, people and organisations employed by corrupt governments to whitewash election results and cover up electoral fraud around the globe. You can rank every country in the world on how much they use these fake election monitors ... and guess which country is in the Number 1 position?
If you guessed "Russia", congratulations. You win the prize, which is a matryoshka doll containing smaller and smaller dolls on the inside, all of them tiny technocrats employed to legitimise a system where the president cheats.
