To everyone here commenting that he used to sing double meaning songs, he was the mirror to society, if you listen to his songs carefully, you'll find it mentioning social ills, dripping with sarcasm. For example:

Sadly, most people don't understand that part.
And most of the people commenting here, probably haven't listened to more than 4-5 of his songs.
Oh My God! This unlocked a memory I didn’t even know I had. Both sides of my parents are from Punjab and I remember my dad and uncles listening to this song when I was a kid. I still remember some of the lyrics to this song when I totally forgot this song existed. Wow!

The reason is they used to sang double meaning, naughty, romantic songs, and in 80s society was very conservative, so many thought that is not appropriate to the society and at that time there were some militant groups as well, obviously with there thoughts.

Chamakila used to sing double meaning songs (in an open theatre kind of events) which ruffled few feathers. He was asked to tone down his lyrics but he didn't and was quite abrasive. This and the politics led to his death.
