That's what I do with my PCD insert for finishing copper. Beautiful finish. I take off 0.02mm on the finish cut at 200mm/min at 2000rpm (63mm ISCAR face mill). Yes it's slow but the finish is worth it.
I love using 2 on 4 insert mill or 3 on a 6 shell. in fact, I have a 4 shell with these same inserts that I run with 2. it's the best happy medium with softer materials between speed and finish. When I found that out, my world changed
I actually get a good finish in 1018 and 6061 with my 3" - 6 insert face mill. The only change I make is that I have one of the five inserts a wiper insert. That way I get the high material removal rates AND a great finish.
Yeah dunno, the channel doesn't have the same appeal any more. Seems to be lacking something. Johny 5 rebuild was announced before the current shop they're in now. So quiet a while ago.
the fly cutter will always give you a mark on the ‘backside’ of the cut, the tool pressure is higher on the cutting side and therefore the tool deflection ‘up’ is higher on the cutting side. this effect should be more significant than the tram of the machine and it should he visible in both x/y directions.
I know you are paying the bills but the interrupted cut and single insert limits speed of the superfly introduces lots of vibration. Less expensive Face Mill Cutter with four APMT1604 inserts are much more useful.
Very nice TOT impersonation, well done 👍
any facemill can be used as a fly cutter..... only put one insert in

This is probably a more balanced setup. So the vibrations wouldn't be as high.
Thanks for the tip.
I've done this lots of times with my 6" facemill. Works real well on bronze.

Or just… use an inserted fly cutter

You don't want to watch "Hi folks, oops, I goofed"?

Have somebody been watching this old Tony :D
What an amazing tool.
Thanks for the video.
how many parts can you run before you lose your finish or how long or a part can you do before the finish changed from one end to the other?
I watched this video to 2:23 and thats all I needed to know. I just bought one directly from Tormach 😊
Don’t know the name but I has a 3 inch single ROUND insert R8 fly cutter which worked well on everything
Remember when this channel advertised remaking Johnny 5? Those were the good old days…

We're still working on it! And it's definitely still the same shop :).

I don't get any marks on my Mikron hsm700 with this fly cutter it's superb.
Or you can run your mill out of tram like me and get amazing results lol
This Old Tony!!
Thanks for sharing
شكرا جزيلا على جهودكم الرائعة
That is a amazing for 4140
Superfly...CNC! *cue the 70's jive*
You missed the most important one in flycutter vs shell mill comparison, which is surface quality.
Is he trolling us with how he pronounces Starrett

Next is a mcd insert
Johnny 5?
WHY? they make these things called "face mills"
face mills use much more power to make clean and consistent cuts and tormach machines have 3 and 1.5hp spindles
