This is completely awesome! I am a former hair stylist, now 70 years old. I did a lot of 'Dorothy Hamill', Shag, and then 'Farrah Fawcett' haircuts to give some reference. This is the cut I've been looking for! I've been cutting and styling my own hair for over 4 years now, and wish I had begun sooner. No one listens, no one seems to understand how to cut my fine, curly/wavy hair. They always cut my bangs and layers too short, and it makes me look older, just isn't right for my face shape. I just finished cutting, doing the best I could following your instructions. My wavy hair is very forgiving, thankfully. For the first time in so long, I am loving my hair! When I look sideways in the mirror, the angle is perfect. I have a square shaped face, and I left the longer length on the sides. It almost looks like a professional stylist did it. Thank you so much!

@@justinhickox Thank you! I've followed your channel for quite a while, and for some reason this cut just stood out as one for my hair type. I appreciate and admire all of your work. Thanks for understanding what women are looking for, and what is best for face shape, texture, amount of curl, etc. Even though I'm retired, I still love haircutting. Wish I could take a class under your instruction. :)

Well, actually a professional stylist did cut it! Congrats! It does make us feel good when our hair looks good on us. I've been cutting my own hair for many years now as my stylist of 25 years retired during the pandemic. I tried someone who was a platform artist that was recommended and ended up with the most horrible butchered haircut ever. Friends said I could not leave the house with it, so I recut it myself and have been doing my own hair ever since..... think I was traumatized, I just can't trust another person to do my hair again now. I also appreciate all these great lessons in how to cut and what looks good on us. And I remember the Dorothy Hamill cut, the wedge, the serf cut, the Farrah Fawcett, shag, mullet, the bi-level, the flip with long bangs,Twiggy's Boy cut, French braids, etc. Love the fun of actually having styles with names to them and people to remember them on. Fun times!

@@nancykelsey5054 I understand the horrors of a butchered haircut! There are many times I don't exactly like the results of my self-haircuts, but they have all been better than some of the ones I've received in salons. I remember all of the cuts you mentioned. Great memories of days gone by!

You know what I'd love? A husband that's a hairstylist!! The only thing better would be a husband who's a hairstylist and a chef!! 😉😁 Great video, Justin. I love the Dionna Bob.❤❤❤ In my 74 years I've worn a bob of various lengths for at least 35 of those years including high school and college. I now wear a short layered all over style (2/3 of my ear showing) and stacked at the nape. I was starting to look matronly in a bob even though it's always been a favorite style.

Interesting. I wore a short layered all over style stacked at the nape for years but got bored. Also noticed only women over 50 wear that style. My neighbor was a model for years, is now a models agent, and she wears a straight bob shorter than Dionna's. Very severe style but it's popular now with women under 40, at least in my city where beauty is big business. I think older women think of that style as matronly because they remember it from many years ago, but to young women it is new and fresh. Fashion is cyclical.

@justinhickox I had shoulder length hair and felt like it was dragging my face down, aging me (just turned 65). I also like to wash my hair frequently as I'm pretty active...I have alot of hair and the longer style took forever to dry and style and honestly, never looked all that great. It's such a liberating cut...feels so modern and youthful. I love that my hair can look fantastic in under 10 minutes.

@@justinhickox I live in SW Fl and I am very active - pickleball, golf, biking, tap, ballet. My biggest adjustment was not being able to wear a high ponytail or bun, which is especially important for ballet. I can still get a short, low pony and I have made due with that although I hate the feeling of sweaty hair on my neck. Otherwise, I love it. It is so much more flattering to my mature face and I love the styling versatility.

Watching you cut hair reminds me of cutting my mother's hair. Although I am completely inept at styling my own hair, which is a giant mess of waves down to my waist that I just braid and forget about, I have a knack for cutting other people's hair. Of course I don't charge them because I have no training or knowledge, I just give free haircuts to elderly ladies and sometimes their grandkids. For the past thirty years I cut my mother's hair into a shaped bob with wispy bangs. She looked great and always had so many compliments, but she had naturally stick straight blonde hair, totally unlike mine, so anybody could have cut her hair. Watching you cut hair made me realize how much I miss her. She died almost a year ago. The last haircut I gave her was from her hospice bed in my house, only a month or so before she died. I miss cutting her hair.
Also, I can't stand getting haircuts and will probably just give up since nobody in Houston understands that I like my hair wavy and do not want it straight. Straight hair depresses me. I don't care if waves and curls are out of style, I love the texture of my mermaid hair. Hairstylists do not approve!

I have learned that I have to be very hands-on with my stylist in order to keep her from cutting my hair the way that she wants instead of what I want. Having said that, I now need help with where to put highlights. I have a short pixie cut and have been getting a few subtle highlights in the crown and the top of my face where my hair falls slightly over my forehead.. Lately, my stylist has been putting them in the back of my hair; is this correct? I'm not sure I like it. I just want to bring some interest to my face and top of my head . What do you think, and what are the guidelines as to where highlights should be placed?

This is what I have been trying to ask for for years. I know my hair needs what I was calling under layering to take the bulk out of the bottom, but leave the top later basically one length, otherwise it just becomes a triangle. I gave up and went short/long pixie but I might grow it out and try again.

Oh Justin, I have to totally admit that when I saw your title, and before I even saw the video, I was a bit angry! I screamed, “But my hair is fine and curly, so NO! Everyone will not want this cut!!” And I apologize for that! 😬 I was home alone so no hubby or children were scarred during this outburst! AFTER I watched this video, I realized that it is as close to the actual cut I have now 😬, but without some of the Justin genius added to it! I WILL be saving this video for my stylist to watch, and will now give full credit of #theDionna to you and your beautiful wife. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with those of us that desperately need it! 🙋🏻‍♀️ This was a huge help to me and I LOVE the different layout and content of this video! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Wish I could see more of the nape texturing. I got a bob/lob after cutting 6 inches off. The back of mine goes under like magic 🎉. I have long grown out pieces that hit right to my ear, like grown out bangs. I had light layers with my prior wolf/butterfly cut on my long hair before my big chop. I'll have to tell my stylist to taper and texturing nape if i heard you correctly. Now to try and save this 😂

I think a bob is the hardest cut, so including the instructions to share with stylist is great. If anyone has a stylist not intersted in watching and learning - beat feet out the door and find someone else. Just like any profession, stylists need to hone their skills constantly.

Years ago in Britain there was the Purdy cut. After a character in a popular T. V. show. Sapphire and Steel. Then we had The Lady Diana cut. After the princess of Wales. Maybe The Dionna bob will be the newest hair style trend here in Britain , from across the pond ? It's lovely.

I love your videos!! I do have a question, I have fine, somewhat long hair, and I just had it cut with layers midway through my length. I have purchased the products you recommended, but I was wondering if you suggest a product that holds the style or is that what the leave in conditioner is for? I flat iron it stated like your videos have stated, but by the time I leave my room, it's completely gone. 😢 sorry I was so long-winded! My life for the last 5 years has been rough, and now, I want to take care of myself, including hair and makeup!! I've bought all your wife's suggestions too! And I've gotten a lot of compliments since I started using her suggestions!! 😁

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  2 місяці тому +1

Great question! And thank you so much for the trust! The leave and conditioner will definitely not give your hair. Any hold. You would want to use a moose or adding product when your hair is wet to give it the control. There’s a moose that I recommend in the link in the description of this video, you would want to apply that after the leave in conditioner from roots to ends and then dry with your normal procedure. Hope that helps.

I spent two years growing out my short spiked hair to mid back. But at 57, my thinning hair made it look really thin. Then my stylist gave me long layers! Loved it. But the truth is I really hate the time it takes to maintain longer hair. I love the tousled look but I've never mastered styling that. Ugh. And I have to have bangs because I have a five head! What's a woman with straight, fine, and thinning hair to do??

Not a lot of stylists address this issue and I end up avoiding this length because I’m not sure how to address in the chair or it at home after the cut. I looked at this hairstyle in interest for a while - my mane of hair is THICK and dense, and each hair is thick... I have a LOT of hair, so I go year round with my hair pulled into a braid or elastic band. The wind drives me nuts in the winter, the scorching humidity in the summer (thus the hair is always secured and not loose).
But I still look and want this style 😍
