Wakesurfing a Bayliner Sterndrive

- We use our Bayliner sterndrive (Mercury Alpha 1) for wakeboarding, skiing, kneeboarding, cruising, and wakesurfing. Plan to add a wake plate in the coming months to see if the wave gets cleaner on my boat. The Bayliner deckboat we're using has a deep v hull, making wake surfing pretty poor. For a 100lb rider, it does have barely enough push to ride unassisted for a few seconds.
When I first got into surfing, I did this behind a stern drive and made sure I was the only one who surfed it. But honestly, I don't see a ton of Danger of Surfing a Stern Drive anymore because you are more aware that the prop is there, and the boat maintains its forward motion, so unless you fall directly into your white wash (which is decently hard to do) I say go for it!
UPDATE: I purchased a Swell wakesurf creator. I tested it out this past weekend and it didn't improve the wave enough to surf without a rope. My 90lb 12 year old son couldn't even ride without a rope. My boat has a very deep v-hull, so that might be the reason for such a poor result. I did capture some video and I'll post shortly.
I would like to see the video with the wakesurf creator on the boat.
nice video. that Nautique is good, for sure.
Everyone comments about sterndrives being incredibly unsafe for wake-surfing. Has anyone fallen towards the prop yet?
Nice one, I have a Bayliner 195 and with 500KG (of people) on board and a home made wake shaper it makes the same wave as on the G23 video...try it before upgrading ;-)
I have a 195 do you have the 3.0.
I have a 2005/6 195 4.3 tks merc. My wife and kids want to do this but heard outboard sterns can be dangerous. Glad to have seen this video. Puts me at ease
Can you show any video of this ? I have a bay liner 195 with the 5.0 merc and want to try to surf it. Can I see your wake shaper ?
Looks safe to me. How about putting some people on the swimdeck for weight, sucking in CO is good for you.
Did u get the wake gate yet? Curious if it helped. I have a 21ft inboard/outboard I’m trying to surf behind. I’m 210lb. I’m not sure if it’s possible. A lot of what I watch and read says a lot of weight in the front is very helpful. Any advice would be appreciated!
Have not bought a wake shaper yet. I hope to this summer and will certainly post/record the results. With wakeboats selling for 20% more due to COVID-19, buying a replacement boat is not financially responsible for me.
@@DamonDougherty hope to see you new surfing video soon!
is it dangerous to wake surf behind an inboard/outboard. i’m trying to look into it but there’s not a lot of info. i have a crownline.
So I ordered a wakeshaper (WAKE 10 Wakesurf Creator X4 Pro) on Amazon. Tried it on my boat along with loading 12 people. We shifted weight, placed shaper in multiple locations, etc. it stuff wasn’t enough to push me. I imagine an 80lb kid would have a better chance. So I easily returned it to Amazon. No money lost.
Yes in theory, surfing behind an IB/OB boat is “dangerous”. If you actually look at the prop location (2ft under water and only 8” out) and the location you typically surf (6ft back) you would be hard pressed to get hurt. Also once u hit the water, you have thousands of gallons traveling 10mph away from the boat. This will shove you away from the boat.
If all the above still makes you nervous, you can easily fabricate a barrier to keep you away from the propeller.
Don't do this! This is how people get injured. Only surf behind a direct drive or V-drive boat
I have never heard of anyone ever being hurt with a stern drive, I would appreciate a reference to an event to learn more?
