  • I’ve been curious about the Sennheiser HD700 for a long time. You don’t really hear or see much about them, and what you do see is usually negative. Thanks to a friend of the channel, I had the chance to sit down with it to try and figure out how it fits into the headphone landscape in 2022.
Some of the headphones mentioned in the video:

My Sennheiser journey has been HD600 -> HD650 -> HD6xx -> HD660s -> HD700 and from one to the next i've never looked back. The HD700 loves tube amps more than any of the other Sennies i've had. 4 years now and i still love them! I'm very sensitive to sibilance - maybe when ordered online i received a unicorn. Would 100% recommend these over all of the previous models, in every category.

I have come to the conclusion that these headphones are unique and i would call them "Legendary". I've had them for many years and i have tried so many other headphones to try and "upgrade" but i have returned every single one and kept the HD700. I've had HD600, HD650,HD6XX, Audeze LCD-GX, Denon D9200 and also HD800S. I think the Denon D9200 is the closest ive been to changing them out, they have incredible sound out of the box but still you dont get that comfort level that HD700 brings. (They are 4-5x the price!?!) Even against HD800S i couldn't hear that much difference and once again HD700 reigned supreme on comfort.
Out of the box the sound is not to my taste but with EQ i simply love them. I think with these headphones they have found that perfect middle ground for music, movies and gaming with 10/10 comfort. They really are incredible.

Used as daily driver for 2 years.
    + Comfort (seriously, Extremely comfy)
    + Soundstage
    + Unironically amazing for gaming
+ little EQ and music was great
    - Velour from pads and headrest started to decay, Rubbing it off made them better
    - stock cable broke after 1 year
    - tube amp or EQ needed

i got the HD700 back in 2013 and it was my only mid-/high-end headphone for SO many years. I always had the HD600 from my buddy as a comparison and yes, compared to that, the HD700 is a bright headphone. You should have seen the face of my buddy when he tried it on his piano, it was almost painful for him. BUT - not for me! HD700 was a classic case of short-term brain burn-in. It really didn't take long for me to like the sound and get used to it, quite the opposite. And once you have, the sheer sound quality in terms of details, soundstage, imaging etc. is phenomenal!! Imo it's clearly a level above the HD600, HD650 and even HD660 in this regard. I haven't head a HD800/S yet, but i wouldn't be surprised, if the HD700 gets my vote in some regards. It really hit me hard to see them get destroyed like this because i felt, that so many of their qualities have been overlooked. And all of that just because people aren't willing to give something a real chance - which, in this case, means, use them for a couple of weeks. I have many more headphones now but i haven't used any other HP as much as the HD700. I wouldn't have been able to, if it would be as shitty as most so-called audiophile reviewers claim.

It's July 2024 in Sydney, my birthday today, and I've got the HD 700 on right now. I bought them in 2013. I adore the sound, especially, as the video indicates, on lush sounds, eg classical or certain 1950s doo wop. However, I don't mind at all what the HD 700 does with folk music from 40+ national groups worldwide (I no longer call it "world music"), R&B, rural and urban blues, jazz and even blow your brains rock. I do wish however that sometimes the bass had more oomph, yet if it did, I expect it would loose a lot of what already makes it an audibly superb, and physically comfortable experience using the HD 700. I've been an audiophile since the age of about 12. That is thanks to my brother HHD, who in 1970 amassed a superb hi-fi system. That was within about six years of migrating to Sydney from Tehran (we're Armenians). He had eclectic music tastes at the time, I've had that taste always. So, in sum thanks all for the kickback at the reviewer (well done, 'twas anyway), with whom I am in complete disagreement or our preferences significantly differ.

I've used my HD700s for 10 years now, mostly for viewing TV during the nights and especially at the begin, also for listening music. The price then was 660€ after a serious discount..HD800 was almost 1k€ and would have needed an additional headphones amplifier.
I compared with HD800s and others for 2hrs, and after that, I experienced a listening fatigue with HD800s, but not with the 700s. That was the key, probably also that these were the most comfortable, especially as I have eyeglasses.
Yes, the base does not go that down and it would nice to be more closed as I can't listen to music without keeping the others awake during the nights. But for the prime use, TV/movies, it is excellent. So very clear at the mids and highs.
I preferred these to HD800s even with music. I can still remember how extremely clear and light the sound was..but the fatigue was real. Almost too crystal clear. HD700s won the comparison especially as the headphone amp was not as high as a requirement as with HD800s.
Technical quality was a bit disappointing. The earpads have been changed once, as was the nice kevlar cable. Also, there has been a rattle since almost new. But no problems and probably are going to be used tonight too.

Buddy, I strongly suggest you to see whether there's any debris or dust close to the driver behind the cloth cover. I also had this "rattle" problem on some tracks and I thought it was an inherent driver failure or design imperfection or frequency resonance or whatever, but after I've cleaned 'em up - the rattle dissapeared. Hope that helps!

Back in the day when the hd 700's were being panned, Guttenberg liked them and accurately explained the sound.
I purchased them and they are a departure from Sennheiser sound but for many and that includes Guttenberg it
was and is a sound that many now like. Affordable and with a Woo WA7 tube amp they sound great. Good for almost
any source material over the years.

I've owned the HD700 for over 8 years. It's still my favorite headphone to this day. It got blasted by dumb reviewers when it released because they only cared about frequency response graphs and measurements, saying the HD700 is overpriced because it didn't measure to what they personally preferred. With a decent tube amp, decent DAC, and high quality source / music files, the HD700 sound incredible.
The soundstage, imaging, layering, bass quantity and quality, detail retrieval, mids, highs, and comfort are all S tier to me. I take all headphone reviews and reviewers with a large grain of salt and disagree with this review too. The HD700 was ahead of its time and it's a shame that Sennheiser discontinued it due to bad reviews and I'm guessing low initial sales. I'll never sell the HD700, even though I have many more expensive headphones and IEMs now.

Btw, both the headband and the ear pads on your test specimen were aftermarket parts. The HD700 came with a type of micro suede pads similar to the HD800.
Ironically it seems most people loved the pads for the comfortable feel and hated them for their sound. Apparently even chinese $10 velour or pleather pads from ebay will fill in the mids and tame the trebble peak quite effectively. (maybe that's why you thought they sounded warm and not peaky?) I'll probably try out Misodiko pads first instead of forking out for Dekonis right from the start.

700 stock pads are like the 800 ones. The pads on this pair are definitely not stock. Tried the dekoni Velour pads when I had the 700, they totally butchered the sound, soundstage was completely gone. Guess these quite thick leather pads change the sound a lot too.

I use these daily for the past 8 years. I could not disagree with you more on everything. I only use Dekoni suede. I cannot stand the stock pads. But, here is the difference. I do not listen to these with music. I only use them for TV gaming. The stock pads are to bright. These are by far the most comfortable HP I have ever used. The build quality is so so. • @protator

Just bought a pair for 300, should arrive today. And I'm pretty excited. I have the entire HD5xx line-up at home, 555/595, 518, 558, 598, 559, 599 and 560S ... some of them multiple times since many of them were bought used as part donors for the 595/598 and the 599. Decided to part with all except the 595 and the 599 and look for a new daily driver. But the 600 series doesn't feel like a big step up for the money and used HD800 are expensive and often in really bad shape. So 660S then? But those are expensive as well, especially when you look at the rising amount of decent 350-500€$ planars on the market. So these HD700 should present an audible improvement over the HD500 series for a resonable price and keep the Sennheiser fanboy in me happy for a while longer.

You should be able to get a used set of 660s for $200-$250 pretty easily. If you want to try an 800 series, I’d recommend the 8xx. I saw one for sale yesterday for $600.

    • @protator

@@MrAyrit If only it Were that easy ... maybe in the states but here in good ol' germany and europe in general prices are skyrocketing and a sub-400€ pair of 660S's is but a silly dream. Importing is not a viable option in most cases either ... 20-50 bucks shipping, plus customs fees, then 20% tax on top of all that. Pretty much kills every otherwise sweet deal. HD8XX for 600 bucks? I'd probably have two if I could find them for that price this side of the pond. 7-800€ for the broken and disgusting og-HD800 specimen you'd only poke with a long stick .. mint 800s, 800S' and 8XXs are in the four-digits over here and that's not in my hobby budget right now unfortunately.

    • @protator
      @protator Рік тому

@@MrAyrit Not sure where they're assembled but considering it's a german company it's weird indeed. But it's been like that with cars as well for a long time ... if you wanted a cheap VW or BMW you had to import/re-import from the US^^. It looks like the 660S has dropped in price a bit this month to 390 for a new pair, but the used market is just as inflated as before. 300-320€ for nice ones, and if you add a new set of pads you might just as well buy them new. And 800s... yeah, it's a bit of a mystery. I mean the og 800s are pretty old by now but somehow most sellers seem to believe that as long as they're not completely wrecked and still recognizable as headphones they're worth their weight in gold.
Anyway, it took some serious tinkering with the EQ but I'm quite happy with my "new" HD700. But I understand now why so many people say they're trash ... it's probably because ootb, with no eq, they sound like trash. And I'm not even talking about the 6kHz peak, I'm not very sensitive to weird FR between 5 and 7k. It's the high frequencies that make my ears bleed. Fortunately EQ is all it takes to fix them. They're the most comfy headphones I've ever had on my nuggin and I'm loving the imaging and the width of soundstage. Probably nothing worth any money if you already own 650s, let alone the 660S, but it was certainly an "ear-opening" upgrade for me. Time to get my E.A.R.S. calibrated so I can start rolling pads ^^. I just refurbed mine with Sennheiser’s OEM ear pads, and headband cushion; but the biggest upgrade came via Black Dragon cables ($370 for a 10-foot balanced dual ¼ inch TRS male connectors for my Teac UD-503 DAC). While the expense of the cable is a hard choice, and it was for me, once you hear them with the HD700s, you’ll realize how much better the phones sound. I’ve tried other aftermarket cables (the OEM cable was severed (not of my doing) is now impossible to find, and if found is usually around $180), but they come nowhere near the original cable, which aren't quite as good as the Black Dragons. You honestly have to hear these to believe it. BTW the base price is $275 for a 5-foot cable with a single 1/4 inch TRS connector.
Anyway, the way I justified the expense was trying to decide if I wanted to pay $499 for the 660S2s or hold onto the HD700s until I replaced them with the HD800S. Reading reviews on the 660S2, I decided to stick with the HD700 and purchase the Black Dragon cable. So far, I’m loving what I’m hearing from HD700 with this cable as they breathe new life (detail) into them. BTW, I bought mine in 2016 and will be holding onto them a bit longer after this cable upgrade.
    My two cents.

The 6XX FR graphs do not show them having a treble peak, but they are known for having a boost around 2-3khz which can make them sound shouty with vocals and certain instruments in that upper-mid range. It's possible you could be sensitive to that frequency range. It's also possible your system could be underpowering/ causing the 6XX to sound sharper and tinny as I've found with my own unit on less capable amps before. You could also just be extremely treble sensitive (I personally never found them sharp).

It's also one of the very few TOTL headphones that offers a diffuse-field like tuning at $1-2K. So it depends on what you're looking for. I agree that the HD820 is a rip off though.

@@shockwave2291 For headphones boasting detail the thump that should be in movie soundtracks like The Dark Knight is none existent because the bass is lacking. There are points where the sound just stops because bass is so rolled off on the HD800S. I shouldn't have to press the xbass button on my iFi amp just to get the bare minimum.

I've been on the lookout for these and got a pair today for $280. I have the HD 650, HD 560 S, vintage HD 545, and Momentum 3 and I've been wanting to try these mainly for gaming. I hope the HD 700 fit the bill at least that way once they arrive. I love my other headphones but they all do things differently than one another in each use case.

@@MrAyrit So I received them today and after an audition, I agree with all of the points you raised during your review. Out of the box, the treble peak makes these headphones fatiguing to listen to, and it takes away from the details in the sub-bass and mid frequencies. I listen to classical and ambient music the most, and with its stock signature I did not like how either sounded. I also tried them in several games (Dead Space, Apex Legends, Valorant, Modern Warfare 2019). I was able to pinpoint background noises, footsteps, and other movements with no problems. The wide soundstage also created an extremely immersive experience.
I thought ahead before these arrived and performed the Anaxilus mod using templates on a Creatology foam sheet, and inserted them into each cup. The high end sounded much more natural, not congested, and the sub-bass also received a small boost. With the oratory1990 EQ applied, it sounds even more natural with the mod applied. I also had to order a replacement headband and sheepskin leather pads, as the seller I bought these from claimed they were in excellent condition and those two parts were worn down.
Overall, the HD 700 stock are great for games, but not my favorite for music compared to my HD 650 and HD 545. With the Anaxilus mod applied (and EQ if you choose to), they are wonderful headphones. The Modhouse Audio kit also exists, but since I did the Anaxilus mod myself for only $1 with the cost of a foam sheet, I don't see the need to spend $15 unless you don't want to cut the templates out yourself. I would not pay more than $300 for these headphones stock, and the cost of replacment earpads/headband should definitely be taken into account. If you can get a pair with these parts replaced and the mod done which I see pop up every so often, $350 is a good asking price.

TIL there's an HD700. It also has a 10 dB spike at 5.5 KHz above Harman, which means this headphone embodies sibilance like nothing else. Sennheiser is so embarrassed by the HD700 that they don't even have it listed on their product page.

Hd 660s uses the same driver in the hd700. What I think is the biggest let down is the fact Sennheiser didnt even bother to make a new driver after 9 years since the launched the hd 700 ,even after the audiophile consumers hated it and even after their predecessors hd 650 being one of their most sold products.. It show how little they care now about their audiophile headphones how they care only about milking the last penny they can from the consumer without doing any work.

    • @shockwave2291

While it's true that they haven't released any new groundbreaking over-ear headphone tech in a while, one has to ask, do they really need to? The HD 600 and HD 800 series are still the undisputed industry benchmarks which all other 'audiophile' grade headphones are compared to today, and the Sennheiser HE-1 (which is just a revision of the last-century Orpheus) is still regarded by many audiophiles as THE best headphones in the world.
And yes, they are still very popular headphones that create a lot of revenue for Sennheiser, so there really isn't a cost-benefit to putting millions into R&D just to create what will likely be a marginal improvement.
To be fair, Sennheiser isn't the only audio company that doesn't put out new headphone tech every couple of years; Hifiman, Beyerdynamic, Fostex, and Denon for example haven't updated their driver tech for many years too, and it's for the same reasons I mentioned above. Audio tech has always moved a lot more slowly than other consumer electronics, and that's ok, because these days we get way too swept up in having to have the latest gizmo or trend, which isn't necessarily the best product.

@@shockwave2291 agreed with virtually everything ya said with the exception of Hifiman not updating driver tech..they’re one of the few mainstream companies who continually (and often silently) update their product line top-to-bottom (or nearly so).

@@davidcoons89 AFAIK, Hifiman's refreshes over the last few years have just been trickling down their driver tech from their higher-end/ TOTL models to the cheaper models.
For example, their newest high-end open back, the HE1000SE, borrows driver tech from the flagship Susvara which came out more than half a decade ago. The Arya, Ananda, Edition X's and Sundara are also just scaled down versions of the original HE1000V1/ V2 drivers (and the Susvara if it's a "stealth" revision) which are much older. The only exception is their high-end closed backs like the HE-R10D which uses a new dynamic driver.
And tbf to Sennheiser, they have been refreshing their entry level HD500 series in the last couple of years which I think use new drivers.

In the trash, where it belongs (along with those new HD660 that use the 150 ohm driver). Some of the worst, most _egregiously_ bad treble of any audio device I've ever heard. Like needles in your ears. A _massive_ downgrade from the HD600/650. Horrendous tonality, less resolving, less dynamic. Worse by virtually every metric.
