Following recent 1923 episodes... There are some possible adjustments 👀 UPDATED FAMILY TREE on the way. Stay tuned.
The generation is not the name "John". Generations are the children born in linage. Tate would be the 7th generation of children born. He is half Indian and set to inherit the land after his father thus fulfilling the prophecy (which if you understand prophecies don't occur word for word).
Finally!! Someone who gets it. I can't understand how people think Costner's character is 4th generation, the math doesn't add up. The only way it does is if he is direct line to Spencer. That may be the wrench. But if he's direct to Jack(John Jr) then he would have to be 5th gen. Unless people really think they waited another 25 years to have a child.

I love it, he's really amazing, and with the timelines so much apart, you have a wonderful excuse to change up characters as we go, since as we age we do change over time anyway. I love it!
Just finished 1883. Heart breaking. World building. So much weight on why they settled where they did. Sheridan did an amazing job bringing life back into westerns.
It would be cool to do a space western set in the future in 2183 (in reference to 1883), where the remnants of the Duttons set off to space and settle on a new planet.
Tate Dutton, being the son of Monica, actually fulfills the prophecy.
Yes, but I think he will have to share at least some of the land with the native Americans for the prophecy to truly be fulfilled. Tate could also avoid property taxes if he sets the ranch up correctly which has to be a fortune.

Well, then the prophecy makes sense...since Tate is the 7th generation and is the heir to the Dutton ranch after his father. He's also half native American so he technically takes back the ranch under "Native American" lineage. That's really cool! I hope this is how it turns out. When they know how to write a good story they sure know how to write a good story!
Well, it also sets up a potential pickle for the 7th generation Dutton son. Does he stay loyal to his Dutton family or will there be a push by the Native Americans to get the land back or take it back by force? I think the 7th generation prophecy agreement will be, "a thing", otherwise why mention this in 1883? Endless possibilities here.

So I just recently discovered this and I decide to watch 1883 first (I love Westerns!!) then now watching 1923, yet to get to Yellowstone.
1923 is annoying me with the Africa bullshit though it’s surprising authentic I wonder if they went on-site especially the beach parts. I’m also going on Safari next week so that will be a nice fresh contrast. I’m still going to keep watching! Maybe Spenser and I can be in the bush at the same time!
1883 had it all & moved myself & my partner to tears many times. Watched 4 eps of Yellowstone, loved it & decided to start from the beginning with 1883 & 1923... great decision but now suffering from withdrawal after binging everything this franchise has to offer
The sequel we most want to see is how Margaret and James Dutton set up their homestead at the Dutton ranch in Montana.

Yes and that is an 11 year period that is extremely vital to how the lineage set up for Yellowstone. That time period is long enough for a six episode mini-series or a 10 season show all on its own. This is the only time period which isn't covered through story. Maybe this was intentional for a future spin-off prequel show of it's own?
Back in those days it was one thing to get a stake of land, it was quite another being able to keep it in such a lawless area and time period. Immediately after staking the property they would have to acquire cattle and hired hands to defend the stake. This would have been the most risky and dangerous time period of the entire Dutton ranch lineage.

I would love to see something like a 6 episode limited series or even a feature length special presentation called 1894 that chronicles James, Margaret and John settling the valley, after the trying journey of 1883. The hardships they faced staking their claim, the birth of Spencer, and then the bitter tragedy of James’ death, Margaret’s letter to Jacob, followed by the harrowing winter that brought her demise and almost took John and Spencer as well. There’s something captivating about the sobering fact that their dreams of manifest destiny, and the spoils for which they paid such a terrible price only lasted a few short years for them. Yet, they succeeded in staking the claim that forged a legacy for their progeny.
Fill the remainder with Jacob’s arrival, and his efforts to mold that claim into a fledgling empire and I think that would make for another damn fine addition to the story.
Though, we may get a fair bit of all that in 1923 flashbacks.

It took more than one year to even start to build that ranch, one reason Margaret froze 9 years later.
@@merrywriterb7811 You know, I was reading some history, and the writers missed out on a great real world event that would have perfectly explained Margaret’s death. In the winter of 1886 in Montana they had a record amount of snow and low temperatures. It became known as “the Great Die-Up”. Millions of Cattle died, ranches were ruined, and many people died as well. It was 63 below zero, and they received an inch of snow every 16 hours for nearly the entire several months of winter. Thousands of cattle invaded towns and cried incessantly and died in doorways, when the skies melted in spring, so many dead cattle clogged all the rivers and streams that they couldn’t find clean water.

Though I have a sneaking suspicion that he's already thinking about this. It would be great to have a second season of 1883. The casting of 1883 was great, even though some fans have complained that Isabel May's accent for Elsa Dutton was awful.
When you think about how many couples had to come together over the course of history, have a child that had a child and so forth, you really start to appreciate how you being here to read this paragraph truly is an odds defying miracle.

Yeah I’m sure he’ll pop up in 1923 as well. He’s Travis Wheatley on Yellowstone, Charlie Goodnight on 1883, seems to be a pattern. Makes perfect sense as he was a great character actor for years.
I’ve always liked writers and directors who tend to utilize a recurring troupe of actors in their works. Sheridan appears to be fond of it himself.
Sheridan also had a recurring role as a Deputy in Sons of Anarchy.
His new series 'Lioness' should be out late this year or early next, with a great cast. A CIA thriller with Morgan Freeman, Nicole Kidman, Zoe Saldana, LaMonica Garrett from 1883, Dave Anable from Yellowstone, and more. I absolutely love Stallone in Tulsa King and Jeremy Renner in Mayor of Kingstown. But worried as to how Kingstown will continue since Renner's terrible snowplow accident. I read it may take 2 years for him to fully recover.

@@n34z3r He's very lucky to have survived. Parts of his body were literally crushed, 30+ broken bones. At least Season two production is complete. So that'll give him more time to rehabilitate. Sheridan and Dillon said they're discussing plans for Season 3. Maybe they can write an accident into the script and bring him back in a wheelchair eventually. No one else can play Mike McClusky like Renner, in my book!
I honestly appreciate this list. My son and I were just discussing how many greats between James and John IV (Costner) the other day. I seriously thought these stories would be played out via too many spin-offs. But man can Taylor Sheridan write. 1883 was simply outstanding and 1923 just ratchet waaay up in ep 3. Absolutely excellent story telling.
Question is, is Taylor Sheridan writing an entire new prequel to Yellowstone about the years of 1883 to 1894? Seems such an important time period to not have it's own story. Calamity happened in these years that affected the entire Dutton lineage. This could be six episode mini-series or it could be a 10 season show on it's own. 1883 was a massive success.

This show is not just American family surviving is a mirroring of generational fight for every family around the world. We all came from someone and somewhere , with inheritance , more of less from our ancestors ,family drama , fights for survival , rivalry between members of same family or community , from birth to death , grit against ourselves and others . American , European ,African , Asian ,Australian , we all can Identify with this Drama . For some ,brings out memories for others tailors a way of life and for some ,maybe singles on this world i, s a dream to come and build towards that family they crave for , a light tower for their future , regardless of the craziness we live in today . So on behalf of my family and my ancestors , simple people that worked the land somewhere in the Carpathian mountains I thank you to all of those that makes this show possible.

In ep 1 of 1923, in the first scenes of Spencer, Elsa narrates that her father had three children and only one would live to see "their children" grow up and see "through the depression" Since 'John I' has died with only one child, (and the depression hasn't happened by his death) Spencer has to have at least one child for the phrase "their children" to mean the combined children of John, Elsa, and Jack.
Which means Jack may not be 'John II'. Spencer might name his son after his brother.
Or the writers just might have a few faux pas.....

The Native American actor who plays Elsa Dutton’s husband Sam on 1883 is the same actor who plays Monica Dutton’s physical therapist in Season 2 of Yellowstone.

As soon as Tate was born (half Indian) I knew he would inherit. I couldn't understand how the tribal leader/council didn't just kick back and say "well, we win!!!"
because John is going to try and turn Tate into a person like himself. If that's the case then the tribal council loses in some aspect

Tate is his only blood related grandchild. Both Carter and Jamie Jr will get nothing for several reasons. In carters case he was never officialy adopted nor does Beth see him as her true son. As for Jamie jr nobody knows he exists and even if they did Jamie isnt getting anything so nothing to inherit for his son.

Just like to point out that Margaret Dutton passed away in 1894. In "1923", season 1 ep 4, at 6 minutes 55 second, we can see her tomestone and it also says she died at the age of 54, so it means she was born in the year 1840. In case nobody else have noticed that...

@@robbyz512 lol. You can mostly only go on who was around in that time period. Most Africans weren't out west cattle ranching in that time period and many Asians were in larger cities back east or in California. They are sticking to historical authenticity for the time period. Cattle ranches in this area in that time period were vastly white society. But I'm sure with spinoffs and episodes there probably will be some different ethnic characters. In 1883 we did see the black commander escorting also the wagon trail west and his story would be interesting as a spinoff. Don't know much about him after 1883. It seems the writers want to keep this lineage story line about the issues of that Dutton family and the ranch rather than introduce any other plots that could detract attention from that. For all we know the potential 60's spinoff might specifically be about race issues for the day and time along with the Dutton ranch and how it could be affected by it.

I'm far more interested in a continuation of the story for the period between 1883 & 1923 than the 1940s or 1960s.
This is one of the best TV Sagas going. Right up there with the old legendary ones like Dallas and Dynasty and all, it to my mind is way way better because of the pioneering Western setting and all those tribulations and the respect ascribed to family and the land and all. Amazing serial and spin offs. Superb!
Sheridan's Dutton family tree is way more interesting than my own family tree.
1883 and 1923 (Season 1) are two of the best shows I’ve ever watched and are in my opinion leagues better than Yellowstone despite the fact that I do also profoundly enjoy watching Yellowstone as well. Taylor Sheridan is an absolute genius at writing exquisitely crafted stories set within the Western genre.
I thought somewhere along the line we found out that Jamie's mother was named Phyllis. But so far there is no mention of how she fits into this or why the Dutton's adopted him, but she seemed to have some sort of connection to the Dutton family.
Jamie’s mother was killed by his father (played by the great actor Will Patton) John and his wife took in little Jamie and raised him as his own.

I think Spencer is the true ancestor to modern day John Dutton, not Jack, Tate inheriting the ranch will fulfill the prophecy, with Carter as the new Rip/Zane. Also it seems there is some curse to the Duttons losing their firstborn child, except for Tate because he will close the cycle.
People seem to forget the writer has messed up more than once. Don't take his words too seriously. John once said that James Dutton was his great-grandfather not Great great Grandfather. There was also this whole thing with 7 generations mentioned by the natives.
If I had to guess, I would say that Spencer is John Dutton's grandfather. But maybe he dies before his son becomes an adult. It could be that Jack raises his little cousin, as it seems that he can't have any kids of his own.
If Jack adopts John's father, then the 7 generation thing could still work. And the whole thing about James Dutton being John Duttons great-grandfather becomes a fact again as well.
Its seems to be theme in the show people raising family members.
Jack used to be used as a nickname for James also. I'm guessing to separate one James from another, probably why Johns were called Jack too

These are great shows. I just wish Sheridan would have taken the time to put the whole story together from beginning to end (kind of like Michener's Centennial). Instead, he just keeps coming up with new ideas and tries to make them fit together.

This makes more sense than a different clip I watched about two weeks ago that said that Tim McGraw’s character was the great-great-great grandfather of Kevin Costner’s character. That made no sense to me. Great-great grandfather does make perfect sense, though.

John Dutton in 1923 ain’t John’s Grand father (spoiler warning)
Jack is a given name, a diminutive of John; alternatively, it may be derived from Jacques, the French form of James or Jacob.
As in President John F. Kennedy being called Jack and marrying the feminine French Jacqueline “Jackie.”
All of the cast were magnificent in 1883, and (thus far) I would say the same of 1923, but Isabel May was a revelation. I'm a little downcast that she is only the narrator in 1923 - so far, at least - but given that was where she finished in 1883 it makes sense. I had no idea that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill could act - I don't follow country music - but I became more invested in that series than I have been in any of Taylor's other efforts. Kingstown is grim beyond measure, particularly now that it's star is seriously injured out here in the real world, but 1883 and 1923 go a long way to explaining why Yellowstone's John Dutton will do anything to keep the ranch intact.
Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown are excellent. Love the street politics of Mayor of Kingstown. Renner was a great choice for this role. He's a hands on guy outside of acting and isn't above getting out in the weather to help folks in bad weather in poor situations. When you look at who has been cast in all three shows, most of them are people that value living real life and that does involve risk. Country singers pride themselves as being real people first and were before making it big in singing. The value of their true selves before making it big has lasting value. This portrays are more real life-like character on-screen. Faith Hill and Tim McGraw were asked to be characters that really aren't that far off from who they were before making it big. Country folks trying to survive, get by and maybe their singing will go somewhere. Neither has been used by Hollywood or spoiled by it with a lot of Hollywood use. I like the fact that they weren't in big Hollywood productions and the sequels those can produce. It add genuine to their characters for 1883. It also works for Harrison Ford because he can personify that same genuine in 1923 and that's just experience and skill and work. As a kid growing up in TN back in the day, many elderly men had Ford's character personification and attitude. They told of stories growing up where the law did little to protect you and yours back than. Sheridan is fantastic and bringing these by-gone attitudes back and presenting them through his careful character/actor selections.
Living simple real life and singing about it is a intended aspect of most country singers. "fame ain't changed me, I'm still singing the simple man's truth". Garth Brooks still drive a 500 dollar truck years after making it big. People saw this as him staying true to self. Same principle here in casting.
He says John Dutton III hasn't been born yet as of 1923 about a second after they show him on the family tree with a birth date of 1920. Anyone else catch that?
Yeah. Seems an estimation which happened back then, but I think there is still ? Around who Kevin’s grandfather is. The cast has been nagging Taylor and they don’t seem to know.
They also have Spencer born in 1886, when both of his parents were dead by 1884. Just little misprints I guess?

I think it'll be: 1. James 2. Spencer 3. Spencer's kid 4. John (DC) 5. John (KC) 6. Kayce 7. Tate
@@agata3683 Kevin Costner's character was born around 1955, so Dabney Coleman's character would have to be born by 1935 or so. Actually, I think Dabney Coleman's date of birth was estimated at 1910-1920s based on information revealed on Yellowstone.
Even if Spencer gets Alex pregnant immediately, the baby will likely be born in 1924 - not enough time for it to grow up and father Dabney Coleman.
Also, I think there's a reason Jack is one of the main characters on 1923. I believe it all runs through him.

@@agata3683 I think Costner's character is in his sixties, like his real life age. If he was born in 1955 for example, he would be 67 now (barring a January bday). Seems about right.
We know that Costner is the 5th generation of Duttons in Montana. Jamie announced him as such on season 5 episode 1. Tim McGraw said the same on a Yellowstone DVD release special feature (that he is Costner's great-great-granddad).
Spencer and John, Tim McGraw's sons, are the second generation, so there has to be two more generations between them and Costner.
Jack being the third generation is the only way that's possible given the time frame.
If Dabney Coleman was Costner's grandfather, as you are considering, he would have to have been born closer to 1910-1915 and been fathered by Spencer or John, and no one like this appears to exist on 1923.
I suppose theoretically he could be born in 1924 and be the grandfather of Costner who was born around 1955, but this would mean he and his offspring would both have to have children at the ages of about 15 and 16 respectively.
Also, I don't remember all the scenes with Dabney Coleman and Costner, but was it not explicitly stated or implied that Dabney Coleman was Costner's dad?
Regarding the similarities between Spencer and Kasey, you're not the first person I've seen point that out, and think that perhaps the lineage runs through Spencer. It just doesn't work out with the timeline.

People seem to forget the writer has messed up more than once. Don't take his words too seriously. John once said that James Dutton was his great-grandfather not Great great Grandfather. There was also this whole thing with 7 generations mentioned by the natives.
If I had to guess, I would say that Spencer is John Dutton's grandfather. But maybe he dies before his son becomes an adult. It could be that Jack raises his little cousin, as it seems that he can't have any kids of his own.
If Jack adopts John's father, then the 7 generation thing could still work. And the whole thing about James Dutton being John Duttons great-grandfather becomes a fact again as well.
Its seems to be theme in the show people raising family members.

Just curious about timelines, if JD is 60s, the timeline maybe off by about 20yrs. From the above timeline tree. JD could have been born in the 40s, which means he should be in his 80s
He's a little younger than me. Born in the late 50s. The Dutton generations roughly line up with mine.

It certainly feels like they're heading that way, especially with the confusion around whether Costner's John is III or IV. A lot of people, myself and this video included, are assuming that Jack is actually John II, but I don't think that is confirmed.

That said, I'm leaning more towards this commenter's idea... that Costner's John III is descended from Spencer as opposed to John I. Spencer names his kid John after his dead brother, making him another John I.

This show had so much potential and they just shit the bed. 1883 was the best by far, good character developments and story arc's, characters which had flaws but learned and grew which was endearing to the audience. Yellowstone has none of that, just a bad soap opera with cardboard, pre-fab characters that stay exactly the same from start to finish. I hope 1923 is better because I gave up on Yellowstone after season 4.
I couldn't agree more.yellowstone has so much more potential for depth like 1883, but the character development is not existent and lacks emotional connection with the audience ...at least not to the degree that 1883 has. Not saying I don't like it but there's just so much potential with these great characters.

Totally wrong. The Dawn Olivieri character was not a sister. She was married to Henry Dutton who had died before 1883. Her last child Mary Abel also carried the Dutton name. That's how we know the Dawn Olivieri was married to a Dutton and is actually a sister in law. The other issue I have is calling Jack John Jr. That is a stretch at this point. Since Jack can also be a stand alone name too, there has been no "'cannon" evidence that he was a junior. In fact, during 1883 when the first attempts at figuring everything out, t was widely accepted that Dabney Coleman was John II and Kevin Costner was John III. I'm not sure whether that was also fan work or came from TS. Until we hear Jack called John (maybe during the ceremony?), its more accurate to stick with Jack as his real name and Kevin Costner being John III.
Claire is the sister of James. When James met up with the family in Fort Worth he told Claire sorry to hear about Henry he was a patient man. He never acknowledged Henry as his brother.
