Is "Chinatown" considered a film-noir? I remember the final scene shocked me when I saw it.
I knew I would enjoy this list of film noirs ... and then I saw the first clip on this video from The Big Combo (the foggy airport hangar... of course it's fog drenched in atmosphere 😎...) and I was even MORE enthusiastic. To me The Big Combo is the epitome of film noir. I began looking for Joseph H Lewis movies after seeing the B-movie gem with the amazing work of, arguably, the best cameraman in the biz, John Alton. I like it more than Lewis' more popular Guncrazy seen on this list (ah, Peggy Cummins. wicked). Ann Savage. A very appropriate name for an actress portraying a femme fatale as ruthless as the one in Detour. Let me mention another cheapie with memorable femme fatale: Decoy starring Jean Gillie who is wonderfully over-the-top. Robert Armstrong co-stars in Decoy as a criminal with a hidden treasure of money. Say hello to greed! Great list MadNick Media. I have not seen Murder by Contract. Somehow, I have not seen all of the Sweet Smell of Success. I think I let the title fool me. Did not realize a solid film noir. Good to know. I recommend the documentary styled film noir T-Men. Before Anthony Mann began making some good westerns with Jimmy Stewart (Winchester '73 ... in B&W) he directed T-Men with (again) John Alton on camera. It is about Treasury Agents uncovering a violent gang of counterfeiters. Steeped in a gritty and sweaty B&W based on an actual incident highlighting the underbelly of 1940's LA. It's also when I realized Dennis O' Keefe could act (tough guy).
Seen 7 murder by contract it looks very few people have seen it including myself the other 2 are night in the city and gun crazy
Donlevy is pronounced don-levy, not donle-vy.
I'm a huge fan of Film Noir and I have seen all of these films at one time or another. Being 82 years I saw many of these in movie theaters. I have alway like movies in B&W.
I like Pick Up On South Street. It was the template for 70s crime detective shows. Great performances by Thelma Ritter and Richard Widmark.
The Crooked Way is also an overlooked gem. It's one of those film's where all involved milk the limited budget for all it's worth. While not a masterpiece, it's far better than one would expect.
Cool list! I've seen 3 of the 10 (and possibly 4, Naked City looked really familiar but will have to watch it again to confirm; so probably I haven't seen it). Really interesting that I immediately recognized Martin Millner (I had to refresh my memory of his name) in the very last film you recommended. Millner was in the 70s series Adam-12 which I watched all the time (mainly because it was TV and my parents watched it, so I did as well).
Saw loads of ropey westerns at the local flea pit cinema back in the day... Three that spring to mind are 'Soldier Blue', 'Shalako' and 'A town called bastard'
THE BIG GUN DOWN location shooting was enacted completely in Spain. This is true for most Italian Westerns. The studio work was performed at Cinicitti in Rome. One exception to the Spanish location filming is ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. Although mainly performed in Spain it has establishing shots done in Monument Valley.
Night AND the City, not Night IN the City. (Incidentally, Harlan Ellison's favorite book, which got me to read the novel. In my humble opinion, this is one of those rare cases where the movie was better than the book.)
Unfortunately already seen all 10 of them.
I was about to type that. I had seen all of them by 1977.
As good fortune would have it these excellent films are televised quite a bit! All are worth watching and more then once!
These are all great.
Are these mij rick grahams worth the 2x price of the Mexican dk24 hh? I’m wondering if it’s worth it to upgrade since my Mexican is already roasted maple and nice to play
Probably not, the key differences are the Bare Knuckle Pickups and SS Frets, unless you also love the color
@ let me know if you want to sell yours I’ll gladly buy it from you since Franklin isn’t blowing them out anymore
I refuse to believe Louis Gossett Jr. ever had hair.
It's Films Noir you illiterate dolt.
Bogart is still the greatest leading man Hollywood has ever produced.
'The Rounders' (1965) is a lot of fun, starring Henry Fonda and Glenn Ford. ;-)
'The Strange Love of Martha Ivers' is one of my favorites, with Miklos Rosza's great soundtrack.
Great movie! Anything with Stanwyck is the best. Check out her pre-code film Ladies of Leisure I LOVED it!
Those are all well known and appreciated.
Watch Gun Crazy. Great movie
One very few see is We’re no Angels. One of the few comedy/dramas of HB
Eddie mueler
I just watched Murder by Contract recently and only watched it because as a young girl I fell in love with V8nce Edwards as Dr.Ben Casey.
I have seen all ten and loved them all. They don't make 'em like they used to.
From Ace in the Hole on, you’re on very safe ground with noir that most everyone knows, not just for beginners in the style. You should have picked more of the less well-known films instead. Two Dassin films is also a bit overegging it. Overall, half of these choices and five other lesser known films would’ve hit the mark.
Thank you a million times🎉
The Yakuza! Ryan's Daughter too.
Oh yes, forgot to mention that James Garner looks ridiculous trying to grow his hair in the depressing 70's. He was always suave and handsome with those crew cuts he sported in all his 60's films. He was a top draw both in the movies and on television.
yes, it's true, there were quite a few Westerns that I never did see. What I did see was : "The Naked Spur" with the reed-thin and tired looking James Stewart. What i clearly recall is seeing the very young and pretty Janet Leigh and wonder why they put her in a Western. She was far better off in the other genres. 'Gunfight at the OK Corral' was one film that everyone saw the world over. With Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster and the lovely, Rhonda Fleming who would want to miss it. Frankie Laine sang the title track. "The Big Country" too was another biggie in the Western genre with a great cast that boasted of Greg Peck, Jean Simmons [always lovely], Chuck Heston and Carroll Baker. And, for Heaven's sake, what was Burl Ives doing there with three layers of eyebrows. Really hilarious!
The word Film Noir was invented by Ben Makiewicz. To celebrate TCM $10,000 a plate dinners with champagne
I've been a film noir fan for several years and with the exception of "Murder by Contract" and "Sudden Fear", I've seen the rest of the noirs on your list and own copies of some of them. Since I'm always up for some young Jack Palance, I'll track down copies of your first two movies on your list and enjoy those. Yes, film noirs are awesome: Great actors and actresses at early stages of their careers, great old cars, great cinematography, yeah...sometimes the script may not have made sense but noirs are always entertaining.
Agreed. That guitar sounds and plays amazingly
I've seen them all & most more then once. I think my favorite is Gun Crazy.
Excellent list. I might have added The Killing (Kubrick). I watched it accidentally one night and it stayed with me.
I’ve seen more but owned two of these.
I’ve never thought of “Sweet Smell of Success” a noir, but yes I guess it is. Good list and I’ve seen ‘em all afore. Time to see them again.
Naked City...wow!
Breaking Point was a masterpiece! Garfield was unforgettable.
Excellent choices!
I have seen The Stranger several times - it is one of my favorite films - but I don't recall the film reel footage; is it possible that that has been edited out of the versions I've seen on UA-cam?
That's interesting, it's certainly possible that some sites have an edited down version of the film. I suppose to find the original you'd have to buy or rent it from some streaming site...or check Internet Archive they usually have every old movie there!
WOW thats a great group of noirs!! Rushing to find the ones I have not experienced--or not experienced ENOUGH. Many great films need marination time. But I really value your narration and analysis. Thanks!
WTF Dwarf beaten up?? Who beats up dwarfs? 75 year old women?
I've seen seven of " 10 Film Noir Classics that..." I've never seen before.
I've seen them all except the first one! Good stuff here!
TRES Heavy :Le Film Noir!
Never seen ? 3/4 are classics ! Nice choice anyway.
The Stranger is the weakest.
"noir" does not have 2 syllables.
