  • This is me and my friend climbing Moonlight Buttress and Spaceshot in Zion National Park, we were planning to climb Touchstone also but the weather had other plans, I'll be back soon for more!

In case your friend was still wondering about those pitons in solid rock, those might be drilled angles. You can make them by drilling a hole that's slightly smaller than the piton, then hammering in the piton. Allegedly they can be better than expansion bolts in really soft sandstone, because perfectly cylindrical holes can be hard to drill in soft sandstone. This means that the expansion clip/sleeve might not engage with the rock properly. Ideally you'd just place a glue-in for these situations, but drilled angles have the benefit of being ready to load as soon as they're placed.

Thanks Gizmo, I went to Zion too when I was like 11 or 12 with my family on a vacation, it was really cool to go back there and actually climb the walls that I dreamed about climbing when I was just a little gym rat team kid.

    Hello Ryan!
We did Touchstone last year and had a blast. Hoping to do both Moonlight and Spaceshot this year. Reading MP comments about Spaceshot P5 gave me pause. Sounds like numerous small placements in a row blown out and experienced aid climbers like Todd Gordon bailing. Can you give me any intel on exact gear used for those thin seams? We have plenty of offset micro nuts and off set BD cams down to .1/.2. Thanks for any advice you have!

Would you recommend this strategy vs hauling?

What would you say the mix of aid/free climbing you did on each route was? All your videos have been great since I stumbled upon them. Cool to see other Washington climbers getting around and see the gear that you use for the areas!

I don't think there's a specific name for a mix of free and aid climbing, if some one is climbing like that, then they just say they did "a mix of free and aid climbing," I guess you could argue that all of this falls under the guise of big wall climbing, which is just about doing anything you can to get up the climb. Thanks for watching!

@@ryantilley9063 Sweet! That makes total sense! I was trying to get a sense of how much free climbing gets done by a normal climber on a big wall versus when we watch Tommy or Alex free climb thousands of feet since I have not done any big walls but want to get into it and have the rack for it!

@@ryantilley9063 The mix of aid and free climbing is called "French Free Climbing." Great video! Hoping to do the climb in Oct or Nov pending the Covid situation

Im confused, I see a lot of pro but I did not see any climbing. there was one spot where it looked like a quick draw was set every 2 foot. I never seen anyone put a hand to rock, are you guys just ascending with ladders and aids?

    • @ryantilley9063

Ya, we were doing aid routes so a lot of using the ladders and a lot of gear!
