  • The Legend of Zelda's community is more divided than ever right now, so I think it'll be interesting to look at some hot takes from people in the community, while discussing if they're right or wrong. Obviously it's all subjective and people can agree or disagree as they please.

    My hot take is that Majora's Mask 3D really made me lose trust in Aonuma as a visionary for the series, and I've only been proven right ever since. He's an insecure director who wants to smooth out every edge and once he gets pulled in a direction can't see the merit of anything else. A lot of people are feeling it after that "never going back" TotK interview, but linearizing bosses, ice arrow usage, Zora swimming, etc. was an early warning sign.

      I liked the remake and especially the improvements to controls like on Epona instead of changing direction around the center you change direction on the center play the N64 version and the 3DS version and you'll get what I mean that really got my fucking nerves with those ghosts on the N64 version

    Hot Take: Tri Force Heroes has some of the best dungeon design in the series, is a genuinely fair but challenging solo experience exceeding Zelda 2 in difficulty, and a meme plot and a focus on multiplayer that didn't work well with Nintendo's online doomed it to obscurity it didn't deserve.

    Anyone saying that open world Zelda is a different genre than what came before is absolutely CORRECT. The old Zelda games are not adventure in the traditional sense. Theyre much more similar to metroidvanias, just with a stronger focus on overworld exploration and narrative. Even Zelda 1 falls into this category (minus the narrative focus).

    That's why I love Hyrule Warriors/Age of Calamity, you can play as Zelda with unique movesets as well as other characters like Tingle. Echoes of Wisdom isn't going to be "bad" but it gives me a NSMB vibe.

    I've always been a MAJOR defender of Zelda II. The only thing really wrong with it is its crypticness and lack of story and general age. All of these things could be improved immensely akin to Zelda 1/BOTW/TOTK.

    Ok, but just so we're clear, A LOT of NES games didn't make you restart from the very beginning after a Game Over. Some examples of this includes Mega Man, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden *AND THE ORIGINAL SUPER MARIO BROS.* YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT! You can actually restart from the start of the last world you were in by holding A and pressing Start at the title screen after a game over, so OP was actually wrong on that one (btw, hope this tip helps someone).
    *BUT* , I also really like Zelda II for its increased difficulty, and actually think that the game is far better than the original The Legend of Zelda, since it's WAY EASIER for someone without a guide to beat (I'm looking at you, random ass tree that I needed to set on fire to progress), and it's quite an interesting challenge overall.

    My zelda hot take is that wond waker is darker than twilight princess. In twilight princess the world is effectively in the same state as it was in OoT. Both midna and zeldas deaths are undone by the end which undercuts their sacrifices. Meanwhile in wind waker, hyrule has long since been destroyed with only a few islands and a few people surviving. And ends with burying the last few remnants of the old world including tje companion you had the whole game forever. All the dark edge that twilight princess has is surface level and and the bright esthetic hides the somber tale it tells

    Criticizing a GBC game for its graphics isn't really fair, hardware limitations exist after all and the Oracle games were Capcom's first attempt at a Zelda game. That being said, both Oracle games and Minish Cap are hands down my favorite entries, and the Oracle games did something incredibly unique in that they have a shared plotline. While you can play either game on its own, you don't get the full story until you start a game in one by using a password generated after beating the other, starting you off in a different state and having the game 'remember' the choices you made in the first one.

    There will probably not be a Video of Hot takes on the UA-cam Comments BUT, My Hot take is:
    Minish cap is the Best Zelda game. It simply has everything a Zelda fan wants it from a Zelda game, It has Beautiful Art and designs, Music and lore, and people who might not agree probably just see it as a Zelda game that doesn't do much to Differenciate it self from the other games, But that's why MC turned into the most "Zelda" a Zelda game could be. It just grabbed everything that makes previous games work and Put it in one Cartridge

    I definitley agree with the hot take that ocarina of times water temple is not nearly as bad as people make it seem. I would like to add that Majoras mask with its great bay temple is a much more frustratingly difficult experience.
    The time limit, coupled with clunky platforming, difficult zora link controls, and the main chamber feeling like a whirlpool with fighting the current make ocarina of times water temple more enjoyable by comparison.

  • @ViewtifulBeau
    @ViewtifulBeau 12 днів тому +5

    BoTW/TotK is frustrating. Its mostly great but when its bad, its BAD.
    The durability system is flawed. Yes, there are oodles and oodles of weapons to find but I find myself gravitating to a few preferences.
    For example, I am mostly a stealth player so I tend to gravitate towards the Phenric Bow for the extra zoom and its wooden so its not affected by lightning. Not rare to find but uncommon enough to get frustrated.
    Or things like Iron Sledgehammers, Its frustrating because I exclusively use it to mine and for Stone Talus', would anyone ever use it in any other scenario? Probably not but the fact that I have to warp to Kakariko, get it, break it, Warp to Goron City, get it, break it, go back to Kakariko, you see what I mean?
    I truly understand what they were going for but the fact that the Master Sword AND the Hylian Sheild are breakable isn't just vein poppingly annoying, its asinine.
    I'm harsh but I still really enjoy the games its just my main criticism wasn't fixed at all, if anything they doubled down.

    • @RealHud
      @RealHud  12 днів тому +1

      True. The Master Sword already isn't the most powerful weapon in either game, so it shouldn't break over and over again.

    • @ShadowWizard224
      @ShadowWizard224 12 днів тому

      I don’t understand why people keep saying that the Master Sword breaks. It’s literally the only weapon in the entire game that doesn’t break. It runs low on energy and you have to recharge it which usually takes around 10 minutes but it doesn’t actually break.
      I think the weapon durability was utilized very well considering the fact that you can also fuse items together which allowed for some interesting fighting mechanics. There’s also items that you can loot from other enemies like Gleeok Horns and Silver Lynell Horns which increase the overall damage with either your swords or arrows. I always say that anyone who has a problem with the weapon durability has some skill issues because it’s not a problem at all if you actually know what you are doing. The weapon durability makes the fighting somewhat of a chess match between you and your enemies and you constantly have to plan and think ahead before you actually go through with something.
      Everything in the game serves a purpose and it’s the players job to find out what purpose each item can be used for the best.

    • @thelettucebarrel7784
      @thelettucebarrel7784 11 днів тому +3

      @@ShadowWizard224No, the durability system is definitely as bad as everyone says it is. It’s not a skill issue thing, it’s a bad game design thing.
      It’s annoying and pointless, doesn’t really add anything to combat when you can just load up on specific weapon types and fuse materials that you like and have an infinite supply. It’s really only there to artificially pad the game.

    • @amandaslough125
      @amandaslough125 10 днів тому

      @@ShadowWizard224Just because you get to keep the hilt and the blade regrows in 10 mins doesn't change the fact that mechanically the Master Sword still breaks.
      And no. It's a bad weapon system. They're just ammo to fodder. They're cheap excuses for rewards. We might as well be using the Sticker Star battle system in an action game, because they're essentially the same system. Weapons as consumable ammo.
      The fuse system is them claiming a fault is a feature, slapping a bandaid on it, and selling it back to you. Base weapons had their durability nerfed. Some even their base damage nerfed. You have to use fuse to have any competent power for battle. And now using arrows are horrendous.

  • @sechran

    A Zelda Game staring … Zelda!? … I mean, okay. Honestly, I’m not hyped, but I really don’t have any reason to object. If it works, great, if not, well it’s being done in that Link’s Awakening Remake style, so it’s not like there’s a BotW level investment being gambled on it.
    Plus it’s a lot easier than casting the title character of some other Nintendo Franchises. Imagine if the next Metroid game had you playing as an actual Metroid.
    ---
    The “open air” games are by no means the low point in the series. That was Skyward Sword, the one Zelda game which isn’t just a bad Zelda game, but a bad game period.
    ---
    The timeline is gibbering nonsense that adds only unnecessary confusion and madness. By the time they were on alternate realitiy #2, they should have known to abort and move on to something more productive.
    ---
    The Oracle games are not the best Zelda titles. But they are certainly underrated.
    ---
    Malon shmalon, who cares? OoT Link is doomed to become a miserable skeleton in a stupid hat either way.
    ---
    ‘s been too long - I remember nothing specific of the dungeons from Wind Waker to have an opinion.
    ---
    Water Temple? … Yeah, the “dungeon” parts are pretty miserable, but it also features the Dark Link fight, one of the high points in the franchise.
    ---
    Zelda 2 gets a lot of flak, probably more than it deserves, but not continuing down that road was for the best for the franchise.
    ---
    Majora’s Mask *is* my favorite Zelda, and it absolutely has the most threatening villain in the series, but… just because it fits my personal tastes doesn’t make it the generally superior game.
    ---
    Weapon durability in BotW and TotK is the worst attribute of either game, reducing every weapon to soggy disposable cardboard. While the games are generally a choir of triumph, the weapon system is the soloist reaching for a high note and belching into the microphone instead.
    ---
    That said, the open world format was by no means the “worst thing” to happen to the franchise. That would probably be the disavowed CDI games. Baring that, Skyward Sword.
    ---
    There are legitimate criticisms to be had of the new format, both as Zelda titles and even within their own genre. There is plenty to want from the earlier titles, and plenty of ways the new format could be done better.
    To argue otherwise is to say Zelda has peaked, and I refuse to entertain that idea.

  • @amandaslough125
    @amandaslough125 10 днів тому

    I have several hot takes that probably count as cold takes depending on the room. But ones that probably actually count:
    Minish Cap is the best top down Zelda game, including at style. Peak spritework for most games. (Give me 2D art again damnit instead of 2.5D games).
    Four Sword Adventures and Triforce Heroes (obviously not FS) are better games than aLttP and LBW. A wide playable space is not the only way to have good exploration. You can hide a lot of cool stuff in nooks and crannies. And these two have some of the best and creative dungeon design in the series.
    I think the Switch duo games are flat out bad games. Well polished, not glitchy etc, but still innately bad. They're very much a completely different genre than the root Zelda design that inspired the entire Metroidvania genre. So they're not good Zelda games. But. On top of that, every "botw clone" I've played has taken the foundational concept and been far more enjoyable. So beyond the regular bias of a colorful Nintendo game instead of the gritty hyper realistic / grim fantasy open worlds, I prefer basically any other open world game more. The only really good thing Zelda has is removing map markers and shield surfing. Because enemy, mechanics, music, story and world building aren't there.

    My problem with durability comes from OoT and MM. Every time I get the Razor Sword, I would immediately upgrade it to the Guilded Sword. And with the Giant’s Knife, I would skip straight to the Biggoron Sword. And the Biggoron Sword in BotW and TotK is not the Biggoron Sword, it’s actually the Giant’s Knife. In order for it to actually be the Biggoron Sword, it has to be unbreakable.
    I hate treating my swords as consumable items. The durability system just inspires me to find the Master Sword as quickly as possible and use only that weapon due to its recharge mechanic. It also portrays Link as someone that poorly maintains his equipment when he’s supposed to be a knight in BotW and TotK.

    I have three hot takes: Kass is an awful father figure (as I see him referred to as within fandom spaces), and I don't think that finding him is all that special. Also, the original Wind waker speed isn't that bad. It isn't the best thing, but it feels surprisingly relaxing, and I like it a lot better then tromping everywhere on foot (like in a alttp) or solely relying on fast travel. Finally, people who complain about autobuild/ultrahand/hoverbike breaking tears aren't taking responsibility for their own actions- you chose to play it that way, why are you blaming the deves for not elimitating one way of playing their game?

    Zelda II was a great idea executed poorly. It needed more time to be good. And compared to super Mario, Zelda II is a waaay bigger game. You can beat Mario in 1 sitting if you’re good, so it’s fair to start over. BotW and TotK are good games, and I think I’m with most people in saying I don’t want to just do a reset and go back to the old format, but the new format isn’t it. Mix in some old with the new. And this wasn’t in the video, nor is it a hot takes, but TotK really dropped the ball from BotW. Basically no mention of BotW existing despite being a direct sequel. No desperately needed lore explanations. Instead making up totally new lore that doesn’t really fit with the franchise. Like now Rauru is a beast man? Since when? Just one of dozens of examples. The same cutscene playing over and over is annoying. And having NO way of attacking that doesn’t break in totk sucks. At least botw had bombs.

      And while I don't think botw and totk are bad games, they are great games (but not good zelda games), imo, they are absolutely the low point in the zelda series, because everything that makes zelda feel like zelda: dungeons (and I mean real dungeons), items (that you get in, and need to progress in and after said dungeons), getting the runes/zonai arm abilities at the start of the game and being thrown into an open world, go mess around is fun, but I'd much rather go into a dungeon that gets me bombs, which i need to beat the boss, and allows me to enter the next dungeon, which gives me the bow for example.

      Or they could at least make more special important weapons that don't break, like the master sword which loses energy rather than breaks. That way, you'd have a tangible benefit to really exploring the game and feel like you're "leveling up" in a sense equipment-wise.

    My personal hot take is that Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK) is a more disappointing game than Breath of the Wild (BOTW). The exploration is more coherent, and the lore is much more concise in BOTW.
    In BOTW the exploration was a had a smooth flow. You started on the ground, climbed up some mountain or structure, scouted visually interesting landmarks, and then glided to the ground to get to them. The cycle is completely broken in TOTK by the Zonai machines because there is almost no reason to travel on the ground anymore. All you do is fly, wait for your batteries to recharge, and then fly again. The sense of discovery was so much more potent in BOTW than in TOTK.
    BOTW lore makes so much sense and there is so much mystery and a lot of questions brought up have at least some kind of answer or theory. TOTK is frustrating in comparison because Sheikah technology just disappears???? And no one mentions it???? Like not even a guardian???
