Personally I think it would've worked better as a movie, the manga has so many interlocking stories that build up to a climax and it would allow them to use a larger budget to keep the animation more consistent. Obviously it may of not performed to well as general audiences would be less inclined to see a black and white non-shonen anime, but indie horror movies are an example of how a unique project could work.
I Agree. I would Love to see Remina Made into a movie, with a good studio working on it, i don't think Remina could Work as a whole series but it's just the right amount for a 90 Minute Movie
Honestly this situation made me realize that it's Impossible to adapt Ito's works in this time Not because it's impossible (I mean look at the first episode) but because the industry and current landscape of animation would not allow it Corporate meddling, budget cuts, time restraints, and animators getting pushed through the wringer. All of them contribute to this hellscape animators and its products nowadays. It's not impossible to adapt to Junji Ito, it's just that the industry will never allow animation that can be as complex as 2d illustrations to exist without compromises
@@RWR785 I mean that can work but remember that studio animation has a very different workflow than independent, passionate, fans. One is an environment full of deadlines and stress and the other is unbridled freedom

I hope this team is hired for other shows, and teaches the BnW style to other animators so that more people are capable of animating in this style and quality. This team deserves more work for their innovation.
18:37 - "...someone higher up with more authority than Jason DeMarco and the many others that were passionate about maintaining the show's quality..." I agree with you. I know this is purely speculative, and I have no hard proof, but I am absolutely _convinced_ this has David Zaslav's fingerprints all over it. The pandemic isn't the only thing that happened in that five-year interim-- the Warner Bros. Discovery merger did too, and that would've directly impacted [adult swim]. We already know Zaslav's uncaring attitude toward animation, and how many other animation productions he axed when he took over. My guess is that he's the one ultimately responsible for stripping out the project's budget and forcing DeMarco's hand. If DeMarco suddenly didn't have the money to keep producing the series the way episode 1 was done before the pandemic, he may have had to make the difficult choice to finish it with a different studio on a faster timeline-- otherwise, all the hard work done for episode 1 would have never seen the light of day. And if that was the situation, I would absolutely understand why DeMarco couldn't publicly specify who the responsible party was.
I think our best bet to see Ito's work animated would be for fans to do it at this point. Even if it took years it'd still end up better than what we got without higher ups screwing this around. But I doubt the copyright would allow it. It's almost more disappointing that we saw how good at can be just to know they won't do it justice.
Ive never heard of this manga or anime but from the clips you showed of the books and first episode i can already tell that it looks gorgeously weird and unique, i love it. I hope one day the fandom will have an animated version that will be as detailed and high quality :)
Junji ito wears powerpuff girls underwear. Just imagine a child watching Nickelodeon with no idea that he will become the most famous horror comic artist
I was huffing heavy levels of copium while I was watching the episode. I was noticing the issues, both animation and pacing wise, but I shrugged them off because I wanted the anime to be good. It's only when I saw screenshots and clips a second time around and looked more into discussions, it was in fact, pretty damn bad. Really am hoping for an increase in quality by the end, but at the very least we DO have that first great episode

" In the end the director chose to fully release since it was near completion. WHAT A SHAME !
from the clips i've seen of eps one and two i still think it's incredible and i never noticed the drop in quality (i saw some of the long form clips from tiktok, i am planning to watch the whole show at some point), nothing can be or is perfect
The animation sure, at the cost of any type of story building I felt like I was scrolling through TikTok’s that had nothing to do with eachother where when the scene changed nothing from the last scene is brought up or even acknowledged at all the story is all over the place and impossible to enjoy
As a Berserk Fan, i feel your dissapointment. Sorry it goes like this sometimes, Doesnt take away from the source material but im sure yall know this 👍
It would be super interesting to widen this topic and show several examples of how some mangas (or comics in general) were adapted to anime (or animation in general), especially the examples where there was a particular challenge, or where significant innovation in animation strategies were introduced.
I strongly AGREE with what you've stated. I'm a long time advocate of the Uzumaki and have obsessed with it for years and even now. I loved the anime. They did serve justice and bear with me till the end. I know about the drop in animation quality and watched to ep3 from now on. But Uzumaki is not your typical horror story with supposedly jumpscares and stuffs. It's not even a horror! As I read uzumaki, there were only few scenes where my blood runs cold. Then what's uzumaki? It's a NIGHTMARE genre. I heard people complaining 'how stupid is this anime' or 'if things are horrible, why not run away'. Clearly they're not aware of the mood of Mr Ito's works. Especially Uzumaki when you read further and further. Uzumaki IS a Nightmare. It is a horror of trends, unexplicable mysterious trends in the world that encompasses the violences and misfortunes. Ever had a feeling like all misfortunes that ever happened to you is connected by unexplicable phenonmenon? Like a nightmare spuralling down? That's Uzumaki. It's not supposed to make SENSE. It's irrational. Fear IS irrational. After two chapter of manga, I wasnt quite into the story but later I got absprption to the story which I find distant are smoothly connected by unexplicable phenonmenon known as Uzumaki. And the feeling of dread and trapped is the true feeling. A whole uneasy feeling is present in every chapters and even in the anime's episodes. Now I've explained what uzumaki supposed to feels like, let's go to anime. Unlike most people have hype in first episode, I know this anime isn't for everyone. Like come on, there are people complaining because this anime has no colors! I didnt like the rotoscope thing to be honest and I found it revulsing since first episode. So I got to the notorious episode 2 where most people quit... It was actually great. Lemme elaborate. Uzumaki's setting is about an isolated town from 90s in mountainsides of japan. Personally i liked such towns because I was born in one. Uzumaki has such ambience. From the sound of drowsy train from daylight to the eerie silence except crickets' sounds. They DID it perfectly. I had the same feeling of uneasiness like in manga. About the drop in animation quality. It's not that bad. There're only few and brief scenes where animation quality dropped. Not much. But as an artist, I understand them. It's not always easy to draw every lines on faces and clothes to shade especially in an animation. It's actually hard to maintain so they put some scenes of grey graphite coloring which is not bad. It. still could give me the feeling of a nightmare. So it's quite okay. Even for the scenes of human running which is weird. Also I love their artistic choice of subtly putting the retro film style everytime there's a disturbing scene. It's like the fabrics of your consciousness is breaking at that point. But so many strange thing happening in kurozuchou that people got indifferent to them and also it gives a nightmarish feeling so everyone's kinda insane in their own way. And the Music!! Even the haters have to admit it! I'm still hearing it in my mind as I'm typing. It such addicting. It's absolutely fit the nightmarish feeling. It gave me uneasy feeling yet feeling attracted to the source of fear which is represented as uzumaki in this story. I think uzumaki is scary because we dont know what it is and we'll never know about it. A mere human can't know the origin of uzumaki which is probably the mystery for existence of everything too... #justiceforuzumakianime
I haven’t watch the uzamaki anime yet, like you im an absolute fan of junji itou. Although I’ve heard some good things about the anime because of the first episode, some people did not like the second episode of uzamaki, because they felt like the anime looked rushed.
