- An explanation of what's required to adjust valve clearance on the very common 150cc engine used in many go-karts, scooters, and other imports.
Disconnect battery
Remove flywheel guard with 8mm, Philips
Remove head cover 8mm, breather tube
Remove spark plug
Sping flywheel (clockwise only) until cam marks align/parallel with head, confirm valve free play and/or (since you're valves may be tight), TDC with visual inspection of piston in cylinder
Loosen nuts, 9mm, on valve adjustment screw
Loosen/Tighten adjustment screw by hand or with pliers to proper clearance, feeler gauges should drag
While holding adjustment screw, tighten nut
Cycle engine and recheck clearance
Installation is reverse of removal
This is my early 2000's Twister Hammerhead 150cc UM150IIR Go-Kart.
With cylinder at Top Dead Center on compression stroke (no valves engaged, cam lobs away from rocker arms, "should" have play if adjusted properly):
Intake .004in / .10mm
Exhaust .005in / .12mm
Thank you for this walkthrough! I just bought a hammerhead that ran poorly especially when cold. Total newbie and managed to set both clearances and it started up and idled perfectly on completion. One valve had zero play even at TDC which caused me some alarm, but I trusted that the piston was at TDC. Thanks!
That's awesome, so happy this helped! It's not hard, just have to try, way to go!
Hey question, on your way to top dead center is there supposed to be air escaping out into the valve area, as the piston pressurizes the air in the combustion chamber? Or is that a gasket leak?
Hello, yes, as you stated, you're still pressurizing the cylinder with air which will move through the valves, that's why it's hard to cycle the engine. A helpful tip, remove the spark plug and it'll cycle much easier, as air will escape through the spark plug hole, instead of forcing valves open manually.
Hi me and my brother have this same go cart and it broke when we were riding it it was going fine then just stopped going forward It runs but we push the gas and nothing happens We have a forward and reverse and it doesnt do anything My dad says he doesnt want to spend money on it do you think you know whats wrong with it? Thank you
Sorry for such a delay, never received a notification on your comment. Sounds like a belt issue, or engagement problem from the clutch weights. In any case, take that belt cover off and start from there. Good luck!
@@visual86 Hi thank you so much for the help it was the belt and clutch that had to be fixed =)
