This is the most advanced dance routine I have ever seen because he manages to combine tango, with tap and flamenco, on occasion switching rapidly between the three of them. This is exceptionally hard to do because each danceform requires you to have your centre of gravity in a different place. I know some dancers who can't switch once, let alone twice or move it up and down their bodies as G does here. Ballet dancers remain forever elevated, and so do not make good tango dancers. In Tango your centre of gravity is around your pelvis; in ballet in the rib cage. Here he switches from the centre of gravity just about the knees (tap), to tango (pelvis) to lower ribs (flamenco). The slow section is particularly impressive because there is no escape. He had to work out where to place his centre of gravity for doing a combination of tap and tango. You can see it resides in his upper thighs, not perfect for either dance form, but better than using the pelvis region alone (tango) for the tap side of things or the knees for the tango. This is why it was so hard for him to do this. Incredible. PS I was a Tango Argentino dancer for 12 years. I danced 23 hours of tango every week on top of my full-time job (on Saturdays I danced non-stop from 7pm to 4am in the morning...totally hooked). After my first two years ibn London, I went to Buenos Aires to learn from the masters there. My teachers were the children of the people who created the dance form - the immigrants who bought it over and then developed it further., so very authentic.
Brilliant analysis of his dance form. I took ballet and tapping jazz for years when I was a kid, and since I was a child, I always admired and loved the skill of Gene Kelly above all of the male movie dancers of this era because he was one of the most practice innovators in his mixing of the different genres of dance. People that worked with him for years, not only other stars, but also other professional dancers who are not on screen, but on stage and other performing areas had always said that Gene Kelly in his athletic approach to dance through gymnastic moves, changed a lot of future performances of other dancers. His approach to dance was so unique That he really formed a new basis in approach to dance on film. He opened the door too many who would not have been even looked at in later years. Had it not been for Gene Kelly. That is one reason why he also was able to work so smoothly with different dancers from ballet with Leslie Caron and Cyd Charisse to to song and dance style dancers, Judy Garland and Ann Miller, and then work beside the difference of the ballroom style approach of Fred Astaire to the comedic gymnastics style of Donald O’Connor to the boogie, blues, gymnastic jazz style of the Nicholas Brothers. He was also such a fine teacher, that he had Frank Sinatra, who had never danced before he was casted in the movie Anchors Away, that it only took Gene Kelly three months to teach Frank Sinatra to smoothly perform alongside him in this movie. Gene Kelly will always be my favorite male movie dancer.
Tremendous. What energy and gracefulness. He is a legend, he was it way before he died. His memory will live forever. I considered myself lucky to be able to watch his performances and enjoy them.
A friend pointed out the not so hidden symbolism of Gene's sticking his sword in his cape before he begins to dance. And then the way Grayson drops that rose at the end! It was so much sexier then when they didn't spell everything out.
Gene Kelly👏👏👏
@@dontheshark Just watched the video again. Its clearly Kelly who runs up to the tree and after that there is no cut or opportunity to substitute a double. Kelly did the stunt himself.
@@WillCamx sorry, it was very quick but the handover starts as he goes behind the rampart and then when he "lands", its a different take/cut when he comes running down for th elast scene
I see him go behind the stone pillar and not be seen for a short time . Then another person shoots straight up . I do not think he could have got to that position to shot straight up. Well I love Gene and did not want to put him down. Happy to talk with you William.
@@dontheshark Hi. Yes I love Kelly's performances too. He does go behind the pillar but he never lets go of the hanging he uses to swing across. His hand and arm is visible continuously. He was a very athletic physical dancer and it's just the sort of thing he would have done. Have you seen his dancing on roller skates from It's always fair weather?
I love his movies on the town ancors awiegh and singing in the rain was amazing and funny live to c frank playing the goofy one that never happened later he's funny that way lol
There were so many "great dancers" during the 30s, 40s, and 50s but one had to have that super special "charisma to win over the public like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly had it! Otherwise, you don't get to be in the limelight like thee two guys!
From what I've read and seen in videos, Gene insisted on doing everything he could possibly do. MGM had him exclusively, from 1946 to 1952, and they protected their star as much as possible.
Well if you wanna watch all gene Kelly movies whatever you do do not watch black hand pilot #No5 and the devil one I forgot that Movies name but it has Devil in it and it’s Violet all the movies I listed off island and don’t watch them until you 17
I like all his non- Musical roles: Johnny in "Black Hand," Robert in "Christmas Holiday," and Victor in "The Cross of Lorraine." He was the most versatile man in Hollywood.
Coz according to sources dean told frank after being on stage when he asked him. Y aren't they laughin dean said well ur not funny I think maybe if he was more goofy perhaps but I don't think he would do that with dean coz that. I realised I need to watch all the Gene Kelly films. He's stunning, and his sense of rhythm is, as far as I can tell, impeccable.
agreed!
Fantastic Dancing by Mr. Gene Kelly. He was truly one of a kind and his performance is exquisite. Love you Gene always. 🌹
Gene Kelly was my favorite musical lead man. I will never forget his modern jazz dance with Cyd Charrise in "Singin in the Rain".
He was not only her partner, he was the choreographer and director
Gene Kelly is just sooooooo hot and that dancing was just simply amazing!!!! Gene Kelly you are the best in the entire world!!!

It's hard for me to be impressed with La La Land when I'm used to musicals like this. (Didn't hate La La Land, just was... slightly underwhelmed.)

I love this scene, the man makes me hungry ;)
Like Fred Asaire, Kelly has a sense of rythm that nobody- that I've seen- can match.

La Cumparsita is an Argentine tango. I don't know why everybody is dressed like Spanish people. Argentines never dressed like that.

Sexpot. Great dancer, too.

Did he do his own stunt? The guy who ends up kissing her doesn't really look like Gene.
This is one of the films where he did do his own stunts.

I can do all that. No big thing :P
He's great, but that's not tango.
It's a combination of tap, flamenco and ballet.
