    I was in 7 or 8 street fights over the years and with that "practice" comes the not blacking out ;-) Also I had a very tiny bit of Karate training decades ago and that surprisingly kicked in every time and gave me my "winning move": Hitting a target. Strangely to me the other guys just never managed to actually hit what they were aiming for. So the simple fact that I was indeed able to hit a target always gave me the upper hand.

    I' m level 28 fighter, i dont really fight this move effective, i reckon you could use a dagger or a long bow as they generally do more damage, unarm combat deal generally about 1-7 hitpoints while a dagger could do 12-17 , u can purchase the dagger at the general store a Whiterun and try to level up your single hand attack skills too

    Shane, for someone who isn't a martial artist like myself, the fear of someone catching your leg because your kick is to slow is pretty real. What is the best way to avoid or counter this while in a street fight?

    For those who can't lift the leg higher than their hips:
    Same can be done with kick to the shin. Use the point of your shoe/boot to make a fast snap kick to the shin while leaning back a bit. Do this with your front leg. Then follow up with the same looping palm strike, punch or elbow, done with the rear hand.
    Trust me, kicking someone with the point of your shoe (or boot, which is even more effective) on someone's shin hurts as fuck. If kicked hard enough, it can shatter the bone. Very good opener for a combo in a street fight. This kick is done easily and quick without losing much time and balance. It's important that you do this kick with the front leg. Not the rear leg.
    Also, no one can catch this low kick unless they're going for a single leg takedown or something.

    Dude love your work! I was in a brief street fight while out riding my mountain bike. I was almost hit by a F250 and trailer. The guy didn't stop, but I caught up to him at the next light. I exchanged hand and arm signals, and smiles, then the fight was on. He chose poorly. I was in spandex and he assumed he had the upper hand. Your are right about blacking out and resorting to what you know best. No shit.l .

      Otto Welt that's why you learn the kick. You don't need to be a great kickboxer to not get it caught but obviously if you can only throw it slow and poorly then it's a bad idea to use it. This isn't bullshit at all it makes perfect sense and the push kick works great but like anything if you don't actually know it then it can easily go wrong.

    • @ottowelt4378
      @ottowelt4378 7 років тому +10

      I have 5 years of Taekwondo and 2 years of Muay Thai Training on my back, when I spar, I teep and pushkick all the time because it works for me because of my height. But on that evening a guy attacked me on the street, I tried to maintain distance with a pushkick, but he grabbed my leg and we had to fight on the ground.
      me personally I prefer things like spitting in the attackers face or John Jones douchebag jabs to the eye to follow up with groin or palm strikes.
      Theoretically this combination is viable, but I would go with something meaner and safer instead, no offense to you Conor

    Front kick is the one that a non stretching legs person can aim higher. And is the kick that takes less ballance out. any circular kick will give circular momentum to your body that you will need to counteract to regain balance.
    The front kick is the less compromising kick.
    And once you lift the knee you can retarget it to head stomach or knee as you see an opening. Circular kicks are harder to redirect.

    Excellent! I'd like to point out that its not obvious what you mean by an open palm strike. Its clear you know the propper one but when you hit the bag fast we cant see it, and wen you demonstrate slowly it looks like a "slap". The propper techinque is to use the harder heavier bones on the heel of the hand (carpals), maybe it would useful to expand on all the non fist variations, like thumb out of the fist to focus the hit in one opint, straight fingers for eye poking, blade hand for collarbone break etc. and there clarify what the open palm technique is.

    Seems like a lot of people are worried about the teep (front push kick) being caught. Well, in my opinion there are at least 2 solutions.
    First, if you're doing combo correctly, you should be putting your weight forward, so you drop that kicking leg (even if it got grabbed) and throw the hand strike simultaneously. It's really difficult to hold the leg if you do this right.
    The other way is replacing the teep with an oblique kick. Actually both kicks are great in self-defense, but I usually prefer oblique kick, because it's nearly impossible to grab the leg, and easier to maintain balance even if the fight is hot.
    Anyway, THANK YOU Shane for making this awesome video (as always).

    There's so many offensive and defensive techniques ranging from all different styles of martial arts or just self defense in general. Any technique would work... but it depends on the situation at hand and how the person can handle themselves. Maybe this combo isn't for everyone but again, it's finding what works best for yourself. I could say it works for me but someone else will say it don't for them. Experimentation and searching for what works best for you is what will help :)

    teep is ok if you can see your attacker coming. it creates distance and if you're in your fight stance but if they're already, like a feet away,"kick em in the nuts. poke in the eye, scratch, anything you can think of to inflict him. street doesn't have rules but to survive.

    I don't really like kicking any higher than just above the knee in street combat, I would exchange that push kick for either a "coup de pied bas" or maybe a low level "lead leg side kick" to the knee unless they got a ridiculously wide guard in which case one may be tempted go in for a jumping snap kick to the chin straight through centre of guard :-)

    Excellent video, good that you made a disclaimer as well. The front kick I feel is not appreciated at all, it is fast and easy to use, does not need that much of flexibility! I remmeber I taught my sister a self defense combo, it was a oblique kick/front kick to the thigh followed by a similar palm strike like you did but to the back of the head! Man your video are beneficial! why not do a series on self defense combos for different scenarios?

    I did martial arts for 17 years and I taught exactly the same 1st step to beginers and advanced. If you're lost and can't remmeber what to do, front kick in stomach or thigh will always work.
    The strike is pretty good too (looks like a mix betwen a cross and a yoko men uchi) but you forgot to mention to be careful to not let your guard down (wich you don't as a very good fighter you put your left arm in protection). That will be the only advice I will add.

    @ Shane - I know you have a headlock defense technique on your channel, but you see so many different ones on youtube, so I wanted to ask you if you'd be interested in doing a collection of all and eleborate on which ones realistic and which ones not? For example I think the one by Stephan Kesting is good, while I dislike the Aikido techniques ...I'm also no fan of the Bas Rutten technique, because he wants you to lift the other person. You can't expect from an average woman to lift a guy, nor could a guy lift a much bigger/stronger guy just like that.
    My personal thing is this: There is no such thing as an "headlock escape". Either you can grapple or you can't. I don think a good wrestler in greco-roman or freestyle would have trouble getting out of a headlock or more presicily grapple his way into a dominant position. Yet you can't spot one headlock escape on youtube that contains elements of wrestling... why? Because it would require solid grappling ability.

    This isn't a roundhouse or spinning kick; it's simply a "Teep", a simple front kick meant to give you 2-3 seconds to mentally access your plight & push the attacker away. In those seconds you ideally follow-up with an open palm strike to the head to Daze your attacker, not necessarily knock him out. Most attackers aren't expecting kicks & not expecting follow-ups. I've viewed hundreds of UA-cam street fights & it's still mainly punches. People automatically use their fists & don't even know how to protect against a teep. Holly Holm used it incredibly effectively against Rhonda's rushing by teeping her in her thigh & it helped throw off her game. We all know how that ended........

    • @Luke-tg2ko
      @Luke-tg2ko 6 років тому

      "I've viewed hundreds of UA-cam street fights & it's still mainly punches. People automatically use their fists":
      It depends on culture. In US no ones plays soccer. In countries where people do play more soccer lot of people is normally kicking MORE and using less punches... I personally prefer kicking in a street fight also If I've been training boxe for a while...Also a time it helped me to save myself from a knife attack. I used a very weak teep but It was enough to disarm the guy. Maybe I was lucky.. I dunno.

    If you are to do one vid to cover this with the least amount of technique I feel you should have included close range briefly as well. What if the person is up in your face, (too close to kick and big righthand strike is too slow). e.g. keep your hands up and go for nose, throat or eyes, open palm of course. At the same time technique is only half of it, you need the survival mindset and not be afraid to go dirty.

    The push kick with the front leg or as my sensei calls it a "defensive kick" is great. Even in competition people forget about it and when they come in I catch em frequently. Yet I dont know if Id use it in a street fight

    How about this. A quick kick in the nuts and a quick jab in the rose, then you escape. I know its fighting dirty but the most important thing in a street fight is to remained unharmed

    Our coach at combat karate sais that as well, if someone is running towards you, a kick should a first automatic response in order to inflict damage and push him away

      also if they have a knife. you won't risk getting a torso stab

    Wouldn't it be better to just throw the palm strike not the kick i mean they could grab the leg

    • @cloudydoesgames
      @cloudydoesgames 7 років тому +6

      might as well kick him in the nuts i think thats the best self defence move

    I'd suggest something more in the lines of a groin kick and fingers to the eyes. This an advanced combo. Definitely not to be thrown by a non-martial artist in a self defence situation. The attacker doesn't have to know how to catch a kick to get you down. A novice will probably judge the distance wrong and topple over themselves.
    This might work if you're a an advanced martial artist with a sense of distance and an a good eye for timing these techniques. and some force behind them too. A push kick doesn't do anything when thrown by a complete beginner against an adrenaline fueled attacker.
    I don't think this is something to teach to a complete novice. You should know it takes a LOT of practice to get that kick to be effective.

    can you make a video of how to keep your calm, in a fight, in the movement etc?
    that would be very helpfull as when you lose control you are more likely to lose a fight
