  • Hi Everyone, second part of the Ducati 848 engine heads rebuild, in this video I will be doing the following work:
    Re-assemble the valve train
    - Insert the closing rockers
    - Insert the valves
    - Install the datum closing and opening shims
    - Install the opening rockers
    - Check the datum valve clearances
    - assess the changes needed to the clearances
    - measure the shims and change out for correct sizes
    - re-assemble the head with correct valve clearances
    - Install the new cam cover gaskets and install
    - install the rocker pin gallery blanking plugs
    All of this work is on the horizontal head, the vertical will be completed off camera.
    Between the last video and this one I have cleaned the head, combustion chamber and ports, finally installed new valve guide oil seals.
    The next video will see the bottom end re-assembled

    For people using this as a reference guide for doing their own, the heads and the cam retainer are matched and cannot be interchanged with another head. The number is stamped on the head and the retainer.
    Great video!! Very clear

      HI Mark, good point. I would never mix journals up as I understand how they are machined but others may not understand that. 👍

    Thank you for the videos, if I may suggest doing a video(or more), on what to look for(engine wise and otherwise) when buying the 848/1098 used...and maybe how to prevent/check for the kind of damage you are fixing here, how to tell if bike/engine was tracked often, etc..

    I really enjoy the garage videos with all the repairs and technical explanations. But to be fully honest I would love to see you have a go on the 748 thunderbike and give it hell on track again. Hope you‘ll find the time to have some trackdays in the future!

      Hi Hansi, I am desperate to get out on track again but all the dates available sold out even before lockdown was relaxed in UK, I am hoping I might get a couple of days in before the end of the year.

    Very good video, I'm about to do this project on a frame up 848 Streetfighter build. I've heard the conventional case bearing for the 848 should be changed out to one for a 999- anyone have info or point me in the right direction?

    Looking at this and the head comparison video - do you have any advice on getting the valve cover gasket to seal properly on a s4rs testastretta with the 4 bolt pattern. mine is leaking slightly around the edges on both cylinders after a valve job.

      If I remember correctly its just a generic shim tool off of ebay. They all perform the same role 😊

      Hi, further to this I wonder if you could help. I’m doing one of these heads at the moment, I’ve 2 different type of measuring tools off eBay, reputable. When I measure the closers with the tool and zero’d calipers, I get a reading of (example) 12.27, subtract 10mm and it’s 2.27 whereas the shim is stamped 3.20. Most content I’ve seen the calipers measure 13.27 so it’s like I’m losing 1mm somewhere. Same with both tools.
      Would you mind giving me ur thoughts please? I’ve found your videos very useful and have subscribed.
      Thanks

    Excuse my ignorance, but is that program you're using to figure out the correct shims something that's readily available to the public or is it a "pay to play" kind of thing?
    I am not a current Duc owner but this kind of technical information fascinates me. Well done video!

    • @DesmoWerx

      Its an excel sheet that I made from a 2V calc sheet, I have then added to it with Belt tensions, Crank shim calc and more. I have not made it available as yet.

      The head tool comes from Laser tools, cost is around the £11 mark. Ebay is your friend for second hand engine parts 👍

    Good one! Do you check for valve guides and valves wear before reassembling?

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 роки тому +1

      I check for excessive play, if its there I will then measure it up to see if changes are needed.

    Where can i get the valve clearance program you use ?

  • @serialgolfer
    @serialgolfer 3 роки тому

    Question, I’ve been servicing my panigale 1299 track bikes valve clearances recently after rebuilding its engine and have noticed when removing the exhaust valves collets to adjust the clearance, that quite often the little collets are broken into a few pieces. They are sometimes broken even when the clearances were in the spec of the manual! Is this common or indicative that I’m not seating the collets correctly when reassembling them? I’m used to Japanese non Desmo valve clearance adjustment and this is the first time I’ve worked on a desmo so just learning new things of this type of design!

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  2 роки тому

      Its not something I normally do for 1199 or 1299 bikes as I focus on the earlier engines. My understanding was the new design is supposed to be stronger and had longer service intervals on the panigale motors, it sounds like an issue to look into.

    • @serialgolfer
      @serialgolfer 2 роки тому

      @@DesmoWerx ah ok no worries! I’ve since gotten in contact with some various specialists and they have advised it’s still fairly common when the bike is running at high revs for long periods. The intake valves on the 1199 and 1299 have valve collets in the shims for the intake valves and half rings for the exhaust valves. But the superleggera has collets for the exhaust valves too to solve the issue.
