  • The following examples for "Too Lazy to Tie the Coat" are methods I learned whilst I was in Beijing with my Sifu Lam Kwong Wing visiting my Sigung Sun Jianyun. I proud to say she touched my hands and gave me some corrections on my form.
    * For what I can remember it was a privilege.
Tremendous thanks to my Sifu for his deep understanding and teaching.

A little history on the origin of the term "Lazy About Tying Coat."
Back in the earlier days in China, respected men would wear long robes, essentially overcoats, that had a wide sash about the waist. If two of these gentlemen should meet on a road, and neither one wants to give way to the other (like Arthur and Lancelot on a bridge) they would naturally fight for the privilege of going first. Swelled egos not being entirely new to fighting men, they would each declare "I'm so bad, I don't even have to take off my coat to kick your butt." And thus was born the sweeping technique of tucking the left and right sides of the robes into the sash (belt) about the waist. The earliest style of Tai-Chi that we know of today, Chen Style, shows this movement very clearly.

Great input. I think Sun style is overlooked a lot. It was the first Taiji style I started learning. It is pretty direct yet clever the more I play with it, the more I see beyond the base.

I learned my Sun 73 from Jing Jing Evans from the Jing Institute. Awesome lady. She calls it "tuck in robes". There we learned the technique as breaking a wrist grab and pushing the person away. It was insightful seeing other applications. Great stuff!
I really hope you keep making videos. I'm learning a lot!

      That's awesome Frank...good ol KWOON!
We came so close. If we had more... at least 6 episodes, we were told by producers that they'd be more likely to back us. But we only made 3

Sun 73. I've spent the past 4 years learning the Sun 72 form. He stresses the Tie Your Coat form as the Signature Sun Atyle form and Stroke the Bird's ail as the signature Yang style form. Thank you for your demonstration and explination. Getting another instructor's explination can be very rewarding.

      Hi Randolf,
Yes that is my lineage. I started in the mid 90's just GRZ. But then my sifu became a disciple of SunJianYun in 98'. She was amazing, a living treasure of knowledge for her time.
