This was great. I'm going to be making some videos showing some of my master's principles. Here's a very short clip of some fighting I've done but importantly some wise words from my master: ua-cam.com/video/NpEQHBZERm0/v-deo.html
First application is like Huen Sao from WingChun i see sifu Gary lam really exaggerate it in that way
Hi Kieren, I really enjoyed your videos, and I think it would be very interesting if you can maybe do a reflection piece on all these journeys that you've gone on. What are the commonalities, and what you have learned and enjoyed most of your interviews. I'd be interested to see someone interview you! :)
Am I right thinking sifu Hsu is based in Taipei?
This is amazing, thx for sharing.
Hope to see more if this.
I've been practicing taiji quan martially for 30 years and met many different masters and teachers. I don't practice chen style but I must say that Mr Hsu is one of the best masters I've seen. His very sensible teaching, intelligent and well thought explanations, his huge knowledge adaptable to all styles and also the respect he has for his student (I've seen teachers bullying their students to show their superiority..) and overall his humble attitude is a very valuable teaching in its own! a big inspiration!
👍
agreed. he seems to be a real sweet heart, meaning he could likely lay out the best of us
Adam was an indoor student of Grandmaster Liu Jun Qiao what was an indoor student to Li Shu Wen (Baji 'God of Spear)
"Chinese people like to stay with their enemies" - In my opinion, these cultural insights are sometimes more valuable than the forms. Thanks for the great experience!
Keep your friends close to you, but keep your ennemies even closer...
@Don Mega what does this have to do with Tai Chi.🤔
That stuck with me. Like a light bulb moment when he said that
@@foxybrown2 tai chi dissolves opposing attacks into your defence and turns it back to attack using their own force + your own force, the resulting damage will be in multiple folds
in real life working with enemies can be more efficient than working with friends..... in a productive way i mean
Love it! 🤩 Thanks for sharing sifu. Keep up the great work! 💪
So karate nerd is here!! If you recommend a channel it has to be good always follow your channel. Good history!!
Your 'sifu' is a lying punk
Kung fu is ancestor of karate . Karate came from Kung fu
@@saquibmohammed2077 yes but not everything is white crane
Greetings Enkamp Sensei, from Caracas Venezuela. You are very good, I also follow you on youtube. I don't do karate. I do Kung fu and Aikido.🙏
living in Asia for 30 years, I am rather Qigong, but since 1994 I have been working Tai-Chi style chen, I met Sifu Adam Hsu in 2003 who thrilled me with him is that he has a great pedagogy and he gives everything, and he doesn't take himself seriously so his classes always take place in a positive atmosphere, thank you for this video.
Oh man, I practice Chen Taijii and this video is like a birthday present!
Happy birthday 😅
Of all the masters you've interviewed on your channel, Sifu Adam Hsu is one of my favorites. He is very knowledgeable, he can speak English well, he explains well (although I'm not sure I understood his point around 12:25) and is also quite funny. Thank you very much for presenting us such gems !
he is not concentrating on hitting 1 point... its about staying stable so having the ability to attack from any momentum -destroying ones foundation is to destabilizing opponent (without fix root point there is no force (you cant hit from water or in no-gravity :) because you push away yourself)) look the single whip he is not planning to hit his opponent with a fist, but on a line or big arc he is attacking 1st with shoulder, elbow and at the end with the hand, it can be a big push from center line to end of hand or 3 hits in a row. in taiji the whole body used to push away and depend on the distance hit with body or back, shoulder, hip, elbow, knee, hand, feet, etc... thats why the big circle and small circle movements, they always try to make the opponent's force kill from the start, from root or foundation, even the strongest opponent cant do any harm if he cant support its force (there is no vector without fixed start point) the easiest way to redirect force from perpendicular direction. i met a chen taiji master he is like an unbearable iron ball which spins and closing and your lucky if it just pushing u away :)
If i might help, he's talking in modern days striking is a point, or dots. And those dots/points are not connected. While CMA emphasized not only in point, but also line (point becomes line as it can be continued or transformed into another way of attack) and then line becomes surface attack as you use whole body
Tai chi is part of the long fist family, just like lions, tigers, and leopards are all part of the cat family. They share a history, and they share many similar movements. There are many styles in the long fist family, including tai chi and mizong.
Dear Master Adam HSU, my deepest appreciation for you leatting us know the practical applications of the Tai-Ji in its basic forms. As a retired instructor I have also learned the difference between form, which are to help students learn the underlying principles of movements along lines, circles, angles and levels. Then , as you properly pointed out comes the usage where those principles have to be put together and pointing out timing n timing that is essential in concentrating your knowledege in order to survive an attack, or even to win in a physical confrontation. This is what makes a good teacher and let me wish good health and good students. All the best, Paul,67, retired instructor of Karate.
altho only a quick snapshot, this is one of best real life applications/explanations of tai chi seen on UA-cam. shows this guy got true deep understanding of tai chi mechanics rather then just remembering the kata
He is really a good teacher!
Mr. Hsu is famous and acknowledged martial artist and a master in art. At 80s years old, his movement is still swift. But one should now few things. First, his demonstration just show one simple possibility and there are plenty variations. Second, he has background of thunder tai chi, so his second demonstration shows a bit of link of that particular style.
He shows an idea and hope to inspire viewer. Don’t be limited and don’t think this is all he got.
@
You have no acknowledgement of what you’re watching
If you don’t like it, just walk away silently , just let us enjoy it
Stop becoming like an ignorant human being
I imagine what he acknowledged was how trash like this doesn't work. We make a lot of money from foreigners using it because they are gullible and don't understand very primitive ideas. Any western boxer in the realm of Mike Tyson would destroy a hundred Taiji guys without effort. Many of the best I've seen in Asia can last a little while - but because they cross train in other styles. Almost like MMA. A toddler could knock out a Taiji practitioner. We've tried and tried to make it work at the UFC. It doesn't.
Stop embarrassing yourself and use simple, hard, fast movements. MMA works and is deadly for a reason.
@@ErraticFaith Mike Tyson is a heavyweight boxing champion who is years younger than this man and he’d still probability respect his martial arts ability. Also most of these masters don’t even charge people for learning, if anything it’s mma gyms that do that.
Master Hsu teaches some of the practical applications of the forms very well. He also provides some good philosophy, history and context in a very humble way. Thanks so much for sharing this with us!
Well said!
love listening to the wisdom of this master.
Very good video. He's not only a master of martial arts but a master of teaching them too.
Not every martial artist has the two qualities, he clearly has both in abundance. 🙏🏻👊🏻
It is rare today to find such masters as Sifu still transmitting knowledge as refined as it is. Men like these are the treasure to have, as their knowledge and understanding is of such great value.
He speaks a lot of truth. He moves really well too.
Some Taijiquan practioner likes to think that Taijiquan is magic which is so dumb and absurd
It not just some Tai chi practitioners, it martial arts in general.
@@realhomosapien whats magic then?
If u want to learn magic, learning taichi is a good base. Magic just means that u cannot explain how it works.
@@Enchantedlight_20_13_ well does that explain about some dudes using it as if they are making invisible fireball and shoot it to the opponent while the form is basically a arm drag?
Bullshito. All of that is worse than useless. You'll get hurt trying that nonsense in a real fight. Thank god for Xu Xiaodong exposing all these con artists.
This man never disappoints. Thank you.
Love Master Hsu.Trained with him many years ago when he was in the states. Extremely knowlegeable.
His Baji/Taiji and internal arts are immense. And always so smooth.
Neat to see that he has his students use some Baji in the video and master Hsu looks great!
He looks even smoother than I remembered.
thank you so much for this!!
Thanks for making this video, my Martial Man. Chen style Taiji is by far my favorite style.
I have 16 years of Taijiquan under my "belt". I was one of the lucky ones who found a great school with various martial arts:
Taiji, all compulsary forms and more
Wushu
Wing Chun
Sanda
Kempo
Bujinkan
It took a while, but years of martial arts with some good, some great teachers, I became a teacher myself.
Gotta give back to the art, right?
After years of self practice, karate, and MMA, I found an inheritor of Chen style Taiji in San Diego.
BTW, I am the luckiest man in the world.
5 years with this amazing master has transformed my Taiji from champion performance to long traditional forms and powerful Push Hands.
My fighting skills have improved over the years and I haven't found a good fight in a while... soon. After Coronavirus, I'm going out to see what is true martial arts.
Is chen tai Chi more effective than wing chun and karate?
Can't help but post a second comment, after reading many others in here. It is indeed a very insightful and comprehensive demonstration, not just of the forms themselves and how they translate into fluid, elegant, effective martial art techniques, but also a demonstration of how these forms are not deprived of subtle meanings, in a clear evidence of how rich chinese traditional teachings such as martial arts can be and how intellectual and spiritual they are in their only apparent mechanical emptiness. The saying that "chinese like to stay with their enemies" is just one of those small jewels of thought that to me clearly demonstrate it. Thanks again.
EXCELLENT video!! Master Adam Hsu is a treasure! He really did an outstanding job of showing what real Taijiquan looks like. I also loved his breakdown of the history, and what he said at the end. Kudos!
I hope Master Adam Hsu is always healthy and happy because he is the world's martial art legend that is still alive today. greetings to Master Adam Hsu
Master Adam Hsu is a living treasure
Master Hsu is a great teacher. He has a wonderful personality and he is a treasure , his skills are amazing ❤
Master Hsu has been sharing with the western world a long time. Thank you for doing the same.
Peace.
Thank you for sharing ancient Chinese secrets of thousands of years in the making, especially translating English , you so humbly did 🌌☯️🌌
"Don't believe the soft movement can kill ten people in one blow. "
Well said.
thank you, Master
Hahaha, who have intented this weird idea. Taichi mach in gun ???
But at all, Its possible , just lure them into a Trap! But think about consequences before!

@@davidm9618 If you're going to detract well, then explain!
What he's saying is really priceless. Honest, true and useful. Thank you for sharing.
Master Hsu is a great sifu, your fighting really improves in his class.
Bsorry Rthatsit by controlling the speed of the other opponent.
Love the explanation, he's so on the ball and real likable dude, could listen to him all day everyday! Thanks for video
That was more than enough. Sticking to the opponent, and using the entire body as an attacking line until he is down. Thank you.
What a wonderful video! And the comments are pure gold. Thanks a lot!!
Master Shu, you have been an inspiration for last forty years...thank you..
Absolutely beautiful and illuminating . Thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it
This is my favorite video of yours. This guy is so calming and powerful. Reminds me of my pure land teacher from the Asian market in town. I would love to train with him and learn this style.
This was a good demo of how to apply form to the real world. This is a style I’d like to get into some day soon. Keep spreading the word.
Thank you for the video, the forms are only a small part, and there are many things needed to understood before we could be effective.
Very intelligent and thorough teaching. I really like and respect that Master's style. Great video. Thank you.
Such a pleasure to watch a real masters teaching. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for sharing! This is very useful.
Great clip! So much better to practice with some understanding of the application. Makes it real - and exciting. Love to see more.
I saw what happened with your haters dude and commend you for handling it so well. You are living the dream, and have a belief in what you do. Why people would bother being hateful, I'm not sure. Your videos are keeping some of us sane during this covid craziness MARTIAL MAN. On that note thank you, keep up the great work.
Awesome and very informative also enjoyed the way he showed the applications Thank you for sharing
Bravo!!!! This is the first master talking frankly, that these are martial arts and require knowledge of combat application. Reminds me of my master, Master Bong Chan. Interested in seeing more of his videos.
There are more videos of Master Adam Hsu on my website. themartialman.com
@Nikolaij Brouiller Agreed. But why then is there so little if any actual combat footage from internal practitioners. Even this video is cooperative with students. Obviously I don't expect Master Hsu to be fighting at his age, but his students? So hard to find internal players to spar with: ua-cam.com/video/NpEQHBZERm0/v-deo.html
Great vid. I studied under an authentic master and everything Master Hsu said is true.
one of the best.thanks for sharing. rarely you meet such true masters. its humour is priceless.
So important to see the practical application of these forms. I can learn forms until I’m blue in the face but how do I implement them? He’s very good and moves quite well. Excellent video
That is the real perplexing idea behind form. Without an understanding of application it merely is a dance.
Find a teacher who knows applications and training drills like push hands.
Great instructions on the usage of the forms. Thank you Master for putting forms into practice.
An honest teacher. Not easy to find :)
An honest teacher. Not easy to get
Great! Really appreciate for this Sifu's explanation. It makes more sense than most of those randomly shown in UA-cam.
I now understand so much more about tai chi chen style. Great demonstration with explanation. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Sifu Adam Hsu is one of the best at teaching/explaning kungfu !
This was a joy to watch. Thank you.
Awesome!! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Among the best martial arts videos I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing and thanks to the master for letting us in on the hidden usage. JB
Wow, so honored to get to see this! Thank you so much!
Excellent demonstration! Great Master of Martial Arts! Thank you!
Great video, you can see his humor coming across, very open mind, super enjoyable!
I’ve followed Adam Hsu since I was a young teenager. I’m in my 60’s now and still appreciate his dedication.
Great explanation and demonstration Sifu! This is why Chen Style is my favorite style of Tai Chi.
Wow, this was fantastic! First time it really "clicked" for me.
Great video well taught love how he shows the different variations slow n fast and explains it properly
Glad you liked it!
Thank you Martial man for sharing these applications from Chen Style through Master Hsu. Very educational, Xie xie!
A very good explanation of a practical application.
It's great to see a master teaching exactly what I was taught decades ago.
Thankyou for this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Long Fist was one of my first movements I learned.Very cool video.
He's the first teacher to show the usage of single whip the way I use it, and I've used it successfully in stand up grappling.
So great master ! Sifu Adam Hsu is not only very knowlegdable, he is a very good teacher also, a living legend in his own time !
. what's the second movement?
Excellent video. Tks sifu n Martial Man.
at 3:46 to 3:48 - he means the 'long robe', not 'long loop' - another often used translation of that move is 'lazily tying the coat'
Terence Oh thanks for the insight.
@@THEMARTIALMAN You're most welcome. Thank you for spreading awareness of Chen Style taijiquan in particular, and martial arts in general.
Great video. Master Hsu is a real expert on usage on applications.
Haven't seen such a great explanation for a long time! Thanks for uploading!
again pure gold, thank you man. Thanks for Sifu
New Martial Man video? Where's my coffee -
Cool video, I don't know anything about Taiji but master Hsu is very inspiring. 👏👏👏
Chen taiji is one of my main systems I train. Viscious once you get it. But it takes along time to get it right.
@Rafael Acosta been there done that. I can use these arts. I just don't get why they can't. I mean it doesn't allways look the same when you fight with it. Chen taiji is great for wrestling. It's a very misunderstood system.
Sifu Hsu, fantastic demonstrations of the applications!
Hao ban!
Glad you liked it!
Master Hsu is the classmate of my teachers. I met him in California, where he taught in the Golden Gate Park Panhandle. He was so pleasant, the same way he comes across in this video. He pushes the other guy, but then keeps him from falling too hard. Great information in this lesson!
Thanks for sharing this information. Can you say if there are any DVDs and books by Master Adam?
Cool stuff, I subbed...I was studying in Taiwan in the 90s...was a great old time...now in Philippines, ever been to Mindanao?
Great teachniqes with clear explanation..respect to the master
Thank you for the stepping advice. My bagua is lacking but will now get better
I would love to train with this man. Thanks for posting this video.
Our pleasure!
Wow! What an excellent teacher.
If you get the chance, please go and film Chen Xiaowang, or his younger brother Chen Xiaoxing. The kinds of techniques you will see are quite different to those shown here.
Chen Xioawang is in his early 80's. Need to catch him soon. But he just sparks demonstrating and he has a wicked sense of humor - ask his disciples!
@@louisewalker9371 Good point. Perhaps Chen Bing or Chen Zhiqiang might be easier to arrange and maybe even more productive. They're both amazing too.
I love his Joy! Thank you.
Wonderful stuff! Thank You.
I studied Chen Style back in 1998 and 99 at Shaolin Temple...great stuff btw...
A Grand Master, I have seen the video many times and I enjoy it, I pay attention to his wise words over and over again. If one reflects on Master Hsu's words, one can see kung fu differently from how one has learned it and that is important. God bless you always Master.
Most important is to find a great Master like Grand Master Shu....hard to find but not impossible..
Fabulous video.
Priceless... Great master!
Thank you for the video, a true grandmaster. Chen was the general in Ming Dynasty army, I enjoy watching Tai Chi forms & staff, very practical forms. Enjoy
Thanks for sharing do you have one on weng chun
