Ever thought of adding an AvE Build Quality Rating System to your franchise? I think putting a number to the overall quality might be of help to some of us with less intellect.
The only problem is, with most of these devices, 99% is rock solid, then they put some chincy cheap plastic switch, garbage caps, etc. in as a premature failure mode, and your "overall" build quality number goes from 100 to zero. Designed obsolescence is what the really smart engineers get paid the big bux for. None of these pro-sumer tools will be homegamer repairable, by design. So a ratings system would be more like "which of these devices has the least shitty longest lasting built-in failure mode?". Once AvE knew he'd have to destroy the dyson to get it apart, wish he would have torture tested it to see what let out the smoke first.
The difference between General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS) and High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS), is the addition of synthetic rubber. In the end product the rubber is in the form of tiny little bubbles inside the polystyrene. This gives it impact resistance. The rubber in the product is also what makes it white, where regular polystyrene is actually clear. (Ofcourse the manufacturers of the actual items can mix different types of polymers and add colours themselves) Source: I work in a Polystyrene plant.

Not at the current price. It was nice to use. The quietness was a real bonus. I feel if I wait 6mths or post xmas sales and price drops a bit then maybe.
Given its apparent difficulty in being serviceable, combined with my understanding that it only has a consumer warranty, thus not covered for commercial use I'd be researching if others have found it stands up to the rigors of frequent use.
Thermal Ions Excellent point. The concern about heat-sensitive parts being near the heat generating parts as shown in this video make me question if it would stand up to the amount of use it would receive in a salon. It might be fine (designed) for the levels of home use, but not beyond that.
Dyson does put their stuff through heavy tests to make sure they last. That is generally putting them through industrial aspects of use. The fact is they take pride in the things they make unlike other companies take pride in the money they make off of the products. For $500 it is expensive but the testing and pride in the product to make sure the thing can handle the stresses of heavy use at least to me seems a bit worth it to get as an investment. I have found many things they surprise for cheaper but you tend to run into the landmines of products being cheap. Others are expensive and cheap by them adding a lot of crap to it. Dyson has that nice balance of good looking and efficient use of space and good durability of the products. Then again they kinda have to start the price high to get what they put into it, designing and start up building of the product, back out of it.
UA-cam's recommendations algorithm is so whacked; the only reason I found out about this channel was cause electroboom mentioned it got demonetized one time.
It would have to come on after midnight and would wear out a censor beeper every episode. I think just to cause brain farts and aneurysms AvE should do a kids show. Talk about an editors nightmare.... But the out-takes would be a riot.
Zee-L Usay Yeah. TV stuff would be like for CaptainDisallusion -- although I don't think he has anywhere near this technical/practical knowledge on electronics and mechanical engineering.
YES IT IS. As a woman who owns and has used the Dyson hair dryer, daily, for over a year now I can tell you with 100% honestly, it's worth it. But a tip to people buying this for their partners: make sure she/he has a place to properly store the dryer, so it will not get beat up by other tools, brushes, etc. (I put it in a vanity drawer, by itself, the drawer is lined w/ a towel for impact absorption.) This is not just a hair dryer, it is a piece of fine electronics. If your partner can't grasp the concept of how bad impact shock is for electronics, don't waste your money. When in use, especially for women doing a round brush blowout, there's going to be a lot of setting it down on the counter. I place a towel on the counter to absorb shock. The unit comes w/ a piece of silicone for this purpose but it's just not big enough. A fluffy hand-towel folded in half is better. Last thing, the on/off switch is a little stiff, even after a year. If you don't slide the switch hard enough, the unit will temporarily stop working. If it's hot, you're done, it's going to be 15 minutes before it will work again. I'm sure this is a safety feature, not many people will run into it, but it's worth mentioning - be solid with the switch when turning it on. That's it -- treat it like the fine electronic it is, and it's worth it. By the way, I watched this video before the purchase....yes, the whole thing. lol
Dyson design their own brushless digital motors but they do outsource the manufacturing. The circuit boards are really cool though, so custom made to fit in the enclosure. Their electronics design really impresses me, the way they can cram boards into such awkward spaces is a work of art to look at on its own.

Blowing hot air is nothing new and the dude seems to take a lot of stuff from the mining industry. It's obvious if you ever watched the videos about the vacuums
*Gets great quality $5,000 variable displacement pump* Opens it with no regards for objects safety and lets oil everywhere *Buys weird $500 hairdrier* Wears gloves and opens like he’s doing an open heart surgery Because AVE has the best logic. Nice video by the way. You wouldn’t happen to know how to stop bearing squeal on a blower motor, would you? I’m gettin’ really tired of the furnace outside of my room screeching every time it turns on.
It screeches because the system is low on water, it's the compression vessel screeching, go into the property and find the top up valve, pressure Guage should not go higher than 2,
Dyson at least used to have an excellent return policy.I remember hearing stories 10 years ago about people that did things like drop their vacuum cleaners down the stairs and Dyson replaced them no questions asked. It was one of the reasons I splurged and bought one. Of course, that was 10+ years ago.
James Dyson is a British inventor, clever guy. His products are expensive but a lot of the profits go back into R&D. I remember his first break through came about forty years back, he invented a wheel barrow which used an inflated ball instead of the normal wheel. Gardeners with weak wrists, (don't judge) found them easier to use and they didn't bog down in soft ground. His next big break through was the bag-less vacuum cleaner, (now the industry standard.) The products are a bit Apple in image and price but Dyson as a company have invented or created many good products. Great video as usual.
Can confirm Dyson offshored the fan blade itself, I was working for a family owned cnc business based in England who were awarded the contract from Dyson where we milled each part individually. I was paid per fan blade milled I made about £50/hour doing this, the faster you were the more you were paid.
"That gives me an Idea, if only it was twice as big" Dont worry Your small one will still fit, it will just be a flopping around in the breeze with all that extra space,
man you are so easy to listen to, just woke up n random searching shit here and you appear. maen totally worth the 1.5h ive spent on your videos. thank you
not sure. I would imagine that if they were lined up without any pitch in the moving blades, there would not be much happening at all. what is going on with that blower is the same idea as a turbofan aircraft engine. the inlet turns and sucks in air, then that air passes through a set of stators to straighten it out so it can enter the compressor stage with maximum velocity. except here there is no compressor stage. it straightens the air so that it isn't swirling around and losing its velocity via turbulence inside of the mechanism.
Stators don't move. That wheel is a turbine rotor. Setting them up one after another will create a stage of compression, just like an axial turbine engine.
Risto Mladich FAA-8083-32 Volume 1, Page 1-41 "Axial Compressors". One rotor and one stator make one stage of compression, equal to about 1.25:1. That little motor is compressing some air. If they really wanted to chooch it up, they could add a couple more rotors and stators.
Dettweiler I always thought they didn't move, hence the name stator, as in static. But modern jet engines have variable pitch stators in the compressor to optimize performance and for surge protection. Don't ask me how they make that happen mechanically speaking. But traditionally yes, stators were fixed. And of course they typically are fixed in hair dryers!
scott black Variable stators are moved by a linkage assembly on the outside of the casing like this: i.imgur.com/1Fk2D1B.jpg That's not what I was referring to, though. Risto and Nick were talking about whether or not that would generate compression.
I was told that it wasn't OCD, it was because years ago times were tougher and money was tight so every effort was made to reuse things as much as possible. I guess it might be a good thing that the younger set can laugh at things like that...
Your absolutely right. She grew up in the depression with an absent alcoholic father and raised her 3 siblings on literally pennies per day. Its a good thing as long as you realize how fortunate we are to be able to laugh at it.
People back then did a lot of things that Preppers talk about doing now (preserving their own food, washing clothes by hand, learning to fabricate things they needed rather than buy them). There is a lot of wisdom there.
FTR, I came here because of Taofledermaus and I am glad I did. This is one of my new favourite YT channels! How the diddly I ever missed it before, I'll never snow.
This guy has a very noticeable combination of high intellect and genuine congeniality with a sort of frugal twang and a utilitarian / pragmatic charm... a lot of UA-cam’s self proclaimed smart people end up having this pitfall of being kind of snobbish or just reciting wrote facts and he has none of that. And a lot of UA-cam reviewers always just sound like they are putting on airs for the camera, acting faked and excited by the mere possibility of receiving and opening the box which doesn’t make for a very informed consumer. I have to applaud this guy for being so genuinely off the cuff funny and knowledgeable about manufacturing
The old imperial inch was replaced by the metric inch. They're not the same length. The metric inch was defined to be precisely 25.4mm. So the humour in his video works on multiple levels.
Nice teardown man. At 36:36 you mention that there is no feedback about motor speed and that that's fairly uncommon. In fact, sensorless brushless motors are actually quite common. In most of those cases, the motor itself is used as the feedback sensor for speed and/or position sensing.

Dude!! My wife loved this video. She wants you to do a hair straightener next. Anyway, you showed the heat output from the dyson but how'd that compare to your wife's hair dryer. My wife has to know!!
AvE thanks man. That's crazy that the heat output was the same as well. Do you have any thoughts on the far infared tech in some dryers that's supposed to dry hair from the inside out without damaging it? Obviously I'm now the conduit through which my wife is speaking to you, haha.
Heat is heat. OK, I hate to be "that guy" but heat can be transferred in more than one way (conduction, convection, radiation). My guess is the marketers of these dryers are trying to say that radiated heat on certain frequencies penetrate the surface of the strand, thereby drying your hair "moar bettar" than through air convection. That is probably BS, but it's not because they are over-complicating the issue. Changing the mode of heat transfer CAN make a difference.
I could see FIR working in a sense, but it could also be difficult to do, and/or dangerous. You'd essentially be microwaving your head to a degree (but not quite microwave frequency). It would be difficult to do because it would work via radiation rather than convection, meaning one would need to shoot this FIR like a gun rather than just heating air and blowing it out. Between the extra cost, potential non-viability of it, and potential danger, I wouldn't say it would be a good thing to invest in.
This could be viewed as you being entertaining enough to keep people watching all of it, or a lot of people with A LOT of free time and with nothing better to watch. Id like to think its the former.

"That's what she said" joke
If I've learned anything from this video, it's that chooch is the most versatile word in the English language. You kill me xD
I got a dyson ad before the video. gold!

I dry my hair with a 50cc two-strokes leaf blower.
I use a 40Lb thrust ATJ 190SV turbine engine.

On the other hand, I shave my head, so, I don't need one.
Do you wash your hair with brawndo?

Can you do a review of electric toothbrushes? I wanna see if those Phillips $200 ones are worth it over like a $50 Oral B one made by Braun.
I searched for toothbrush on his channel.
didn't review a toothbrush
if he reviews toothbrush it will be for removing stubborn grease and carbon in an engine? :)
I have one of those Philips toothbrushes, I'm surprised it has lasted 10 years now. Yeah... it's 10.
@@juliest631 The sonicare is a beast! Ive seen 7 years from them easy
For what it's worth I have a Braun toothbrush that's 11 years old, still going.
Only AvE can get me to watch 45 minutes of a fucking hair dryer! and keep me entertained.
I bought a fancy pants, high efficiency hair dryer like that a while back for nearly as much. The biggest problem with it, though, is the consumables! Go figure! I gotta refill the friggin oxygen and acetylene tanks every couple months, plus my hair doesn't grow back much anymore.
Your hair dryer still has the older V2 model inside.
This guy is brilliant. One of those people who can talk about anything and it sounds compelling, unique and informative. Sili-con-carnie? There's no need for that. But it's like everything in this video. Hilarious Genius.
It's "con carne", like cheese salsa, I think. But yeah, AvE is a hoot.
This is the first time I've seen a Dyson blow dryer and my first thought looking at it is that it looks like a sex toy for either gender.
two genders eh ? that's gonna be a civil discussion Kappa
can both use it at the same time?
For $500 it ought to be a two-for-one deal.
Lazarus Long Actually laughed out loud at that comment.
me too hahah
I don't know how much more she can take captain! We're already going Chooch Factor 3!
Myk Al turn it up to 11!
Hands down one of my fave youtubers... And a fellow Canadian.. this guy knows his stuff more than any other ive seen..
Awesome review. You should do one of their vacuums next
Down the rabbit hole we go.
If he did their robot vac, that could be interesting..... and very expensive!
And then a review on how Dyson and Apple get by with overcharging out the Wazoo and people just accept it based on brand name recognition. Both companies are full of marketing geniuses.
eh, I've had the same Dyson vacuum for over 10 years, haven't had to do anything but clean the filter. what are you doing with it that it's broken?
120k rpm blowies, that is all.
I worked for a computer that sold and repaired custom computers. The president one day was talking about how every computer came with "SBL technology"
Later I asked one of the techs what he was talking about... "Shining blue lights" :P
Was it the one that was one step ahead of IBM??

Ever thought of adding an AvE Build Quality Rating System to your franchise? I think putting a number to the overall quality might be of help to some of us with less intellect.
that's a good ideal
That idea ain't tea bag. I'd love to see a rating system of some sort.
ABQRS sounds really impressive...
Only if the highest rating is "skookum choocher".
Once AvE knew he'd have to destroy the dyson to get it apart, wish he would have torture tested it to see what let out the smoke first.
never a dull moment on this channel lol love it
being supersonic does it bug the shit out of a dog?
He has so many made up words it's like another language lol 😂 love it!
(Ofcourse the manufacturers of the actual items can mix different types of polymers and add colours themselves)
Source: I work in a Polystyrene plant.
So you're saying it's only one herb and spice?
As a hairdresser who was interested in it as an everyday tool. I THANK YOU! long time subscriber because I find you entertaining and educational... but this, this really ferk'n helps.
So the question: would you add it to your tool box?
I'd love to see someone from Dyson react to this video.

Holy shit dude, how have i never seen your stuff before. By far my favorite UA-camr! Funny and educational, love your stuff dude.
UA-cam's recommendations algorithm is so whacked; the only reason I found out about this channel was cause electroboom mentioned it got demonetized one time.
Dude
Try watching Pecos Hank and Essential Craftsman. Amazing UA-camrs as well.
well you've got hours of fun ahead of you...

This is, by far, the absolute best review of any gadget EVER!!!
You should have a network TV show man, demystifying all this techno babble shit for the general populous. Love your vids. Kudos.
It would have to come on after midnight and would wear out a censor beeper every episode. I think just to cause brain farts and aneurysms AvE should do a kids show. Talk about an editors nightmare....
But the out-takes would be a riot.
Zee-L Usay
Yeah. TV stuff would be like for CaptainDisallusion -- although I don't think he has anywhere near this technical/practical knowledge on electronics and mechanical engineering.
It would have to be on a cable network!
The R rated Red Green!

By the way, I watched this video before the purchase....yes, the whole thing. lol
Great tips thanks. How long did your Dyson last? do you still use it, 6 years later?
Dyson design their own brushless digital motors but they do outsource the manufacturing.
The circuit boards are really cool though, so custom made to fit in the enclosure. Their electronics design really impresses me, the way they can cram boards into such awkward spaces is a work of art to look at on its own.
This is the first video that I've watched of AvE's and I find his vernacular to be pure comedic genius. You got a subscriber, dear sir! Not to mention you know your shit. :) Keep 'em coming
I like these videos. Normally I feel like everything is so hopelessly complicated that I just have to accept that I will never understand the world I live in, but he seems to be able to put ANYTHING in manageable terms! It's like he's saying "See? Life's not so big and scary."
AWESOME EPISODE!!! It's very interesting to see how these new, sparkly items can be analyzed for quality & effectiveness. And am glad to know I'm not missing too much by sticking with my $35 Connair! 😊
Blowing hot air is nothing new and the dude seems to take a lot of stuff from the mining industry. It's obvious if you ever watched the videos about the vacuums
Well, this video will go nice with a few wobbly pops and a couple of tokes. Thanks as always AvE!

I've watched a few of his videos and the extent of his knowledge amazes me.

I think AvE has mentioned in the past that he has a masters degree in some kind of engineering I believe. Could be disinfo tho idrk.

Nice video by the way. You wouldn’t happen to know how to stop bearing squeal on a blower motor, would you?
I’m gettin’ really tired of the furnace outside of my room screeching every time it turns on.
Nicolas Boswell my life.
It screeches because the system is low on water, it's the compression vessel screeching, go into the property and find the top up valve, pressure Guage should not go higher than 2,

"This thing feels like the future!"
LMFAO.
I am amazed at your knowledge of like everything
This is probably my favourite video on UA-cam after many years I still come back once in a while and rewatch it.
Did you box it back up and return it?
Fack no...thats his wife's new toy while he's in the garage. Unfortunately he's gonna have to buy burn cream by the gallon.
its ruined lol
Send it back anyway, lets see how they react :D 'I just took it out of the box, I swear it came like this!'
"Looks like you guys gave me a used one!"
Thank you for reviewing this! You saved me 500 bucks. I told the wife if she made it through this video I'd buy her one.
btw I
Nice, but still a scary thought to think of you buying one.
32:38 I like how he's using one of the nozzle heads as a screw-keeper. Lol, it found a true purpose.
"This is some sort of cellphone packaging, lotsa shit in there"
Ah, the good old days when you got a charger in the box.
When phones still had charging ports!

the vanes in the motor are called 'stators'. they straighten the flow of air
And of course they typically are fixed in hair dryers!
scott black Variable stators are moved by a linkage assembly on the outside of the casing like this: i.imgur.com/1Fk2D1B.jpg
That's not what I was referring to, though. Risto and Nick were talking about whether or not that would generate compression.
Damn AvE,. you opened that gift just like grandma does so she can save the paper and never use it again. LOL
Steve just Steve My grandma would sit and untie the bow on a gift. I just remember thinking "CUT THE FUCKER." Oh the Holliday's....magical.
my mum used to do that. OCD will do that to ya
"High pressure, hig velocity air jet" Dyson just wrote a big "fuck" to bernoulli on their package
Quick note. BLDC rotors can still be sensed for commutation using back EMF rather than hall sensors. Very common.
PS. Great commentary. Love it
Came here to say this
he gets things right most of the time...... lol
"6 Inches.. that's metric.. 6 inches." Man, man, man. Thanks for all this! Heheh.
The old imperial inch was replaced by the metric inch. They're not the same length. The metric inch was defined to be precisely 25.4mm. So the humour in his video works on multiple levels.
"if only it was twice as big".... priceless
27:47 A great moment of explaining the cheap way BUT THEN realizing it's CNC machined simultaneously. A true genius of our time.
I was really disappointed to hear "International Rectifier" 39 times and not once "International Rectumfier."
Nice teardown man. At 36:36 you mention that there is no feedback about motor speed and that that's fairly uncommon. In fact, sensorless brushless motors are actually quite common. In most of those cases, the motor itself is used as the feedback sensor for speed and/or position sensing.
I walked into Ulta and asked the salesperson what one item would you buy first if you had the money. Every girl in the place immediately said pointed to this hair dryer. My wife goes nuts about this hair dryer. She loves it! Sometimes in life, you have to ask that question and just pony up the money. I thought it was nuts. It is nuts. But, in a jam, that ends up being the very best question to ask when buying your sweetie sometime she would never get herself. And, it’s an awesome hair dryer.
"...I thought I was wrong... turned out I was mistaken..." That line had me cracking up.
24:30- In part so the good folks who do warranty service can tell if you've been messing with the unit. Sort of like the stickers they put over certain screws in a HD case.

Never watched a video from this guy before, 5 seconds in "I wonder what part of Canada hes from"
Between the extra cost, potential non-viability of it, and potential danger, I wouldn't say it would be a good thing to invest in.
usually it's just some red leds, because it'll look like it's outputting a ton of heat, without doing any damage.
I'm a construction worker that just watched a 40 min video on hairdryers. Well done man I'll be following
AvE Just for curiosity's sake, in your video statistics, in average how long are peoples attentions spans when it comes to your long videos?
This could be viewed as you being entertaining enough to keep people watching all of it, or a lot of people with A LOT of free time and with nothing better to watch. Id like to think its the former.
