You actually installed the forward assembly, reverse drum, and band and then removed it all just to show us how to put it in again from a different angle, respect
My son and I watched this video together to rebuild his 4L60. Your videos are the best I've ever seen, very informative and fast paced which I like for videos. Thank you very much for your time you put into these videos.
I just want to say this is one of the most informative videos I've watched. I'm a veteran mechanic Diesel and gasoline. My first time doing an automatic transmission. This video made it simple for me. Thanks..
Man I love your videos. I'm an engine builder and I really appreciate you putting these videos out. I've done a few transmissions power glides and th350's but I dont know much about them. I recently have found myself needing to do a couple of 700's and a 4l60 for my own stuff. man you are a life saver! You have the most complete no BS videos on transmissions on UA-cam! Thanks Brother! Also...I feel your pain on voice overs lol
These videos are fun.Hiram is sharing his tricks with us.I have built Honda,Ford and GM transmissions with Hirams videos.I built at least 10 transmissions that all worked great, Thanks Hiram.
Thank you for your time and effort you put in to educate us. This build seems very intimidating with all those pieces but with you as guide it isnt so scary.
this video was just what i needed ...i removed the servo and the band moved into the way of the servo pin so that i cant push the new servo back into the case ....2 things i learned 1 being how the band sits in the case and2 how to be able to get to the band without removing the trans from the car to get this issue sorted out ...great video very good instructions all through it all . thank you for going through it for everyone to understand....see how he explains how the band would move and not allow the servo to go into the case that is exactly what happened to me and this video was a very big help to get my issue sorted out thank you so much
Damn...I fell asleep and woke up and you were still at it. This, by far, is the most in depth video I have seen or dreamed(since I slept thru some).MY MAN...
Hiram, again with this second part of the 700R4 rebuild , my son and I are eager to watch again and again , then get started on out rebuild. You should be an instructor, you explain things very clearly.
Hiram I got yo tell you that your videos were prefect. I'm sitting at my bench and have just finished my 700r4 after watching your parts 1 & 2. I did this trans years ago and followed a guy on a DVD and he took only 2hrs to complete the reassembling process. Your info was great, I found so many mistakes from the first time I did it also. Thanks so much for doing this it was a pleasure getting this task completed and with your help I'll be on the road this spring.
I have over 40 years experience in auto repair and the only things I haven't tackled are rear end rebuilds and automatic transmissions. I have a vehicle with a 700R4 that will soon be needing a rebuild so I thought this might be a good thing to watch and learn from, and maybe attempt it myself. What I took away from this video is that to do the right job you can't do it without the knowledge and depth of parts that a pro like you have. You are truly an ace at what you do. If I weren't in New York you would be seeing me soon at your shop. Thanks for taking the time to make your videos. They are great.
thanks for taking time to get into the weeds on this. Bought a used 700R4 for my 73 C10 but I want to beef it up a little. Now I feel I should be able to tackle it.
I also had issues with the governor being at first a broken gear that I replaced ... cleaned up the governor with carb cleaner and after installing it it shifted once or twice and was once again stuck in its boar .... I have since ordered a 10mm boar brush that I plan on cleaning up the inner sleeve of the governor in hopes that that will help keep it from hanging up in the future... I also plan in doing a full trans flush to clean out all the old fluid from the transmission and converter...hopefully this will be enough to get this trans shifting gears again like it was just recently, I had no issues untill just recently when the governor gear went any input I’m real thankful for. Great video , great information thank you !.
I know I'm late to the party, but others like me that just found your channel might get this info. In the ATSG Upgrade book, on page 95 they back up and give an explanation on the boost springs . It basically echos what you said, "if you have tight clearances, use the booster springs, they do more good than harm." Just a little info to give to the newbies that didn't have the book or upgrade book. Thanks for your teaching expertise.
Great job Hiram . Thanks for the info on all the video that you do . Blessings to you and your Family. Hard times going on , no te aguites hermanaso .👍
thank you sir. I finally finished my transmission. i gotta admit this was my first time ever doing this. it took me several weeks due to my lack of experience. i damaged two lip seals and had to order more and the i freakin damaged the pressure regulator valve in the front pump but it was totally my fault. i got frustrated and pryed in a bad location. i got a new one from amazon no problem. your video was very thorough and my mistakes were totally my fault. thank you very much for this video
Dude you rock! At least you got it done. That's awesome and gives me hope I torn mine down last week and going to start the rebuild on my next day off.
I fixed my slipping Automatic transmission in about 45 minutes , didn't even have to take the oil pan off or remove any bolts , I just added a pilot bushing , Steel SFI certified Fly Wheel , 11 inch clutch and M-21 Muncie 4 speed , That old automatic don't slip no more
before the lock down i was telling him the same. I used to live in Texas and it's damn hot there. I would rather listen to the fan than watch him wither due to heat.
You Sir will probably never see this But if you do it is much appreciated the extra trouble you go through to show us technical information with a hands on demonstration thank you sir
morning Hiram i stopped building when these started and now a lot older and doing some 4l60e s so this was my first full view of 700 THANKS you are great TEACHER JIMMY n ALA
Really needed this for my 1991 Camaro, glad I found your channel. I was a bit hesitant to even attempt rebuilding my transmission, but after watching this and part 1 I feel much more confident. Thanks a lot, you really know your stuff.
My transmission just started making wierd noises sounds like its coming from the torque converter. Really have no over drive and all the gears shifts way late i have to floor it for it to shift. I have a spare trans that took a dump 13 months after i paid $2700 to have it rebuilt. Ima take it apart tomorrow and see whats wrong with it.. Thank you for this 1 and 2 part video.
u may want to grind that mushroom off your bushing driver,., it can fracture and a small piece fall in the trans, and u might not see it. thanks great vid sir!
I really appreciate your videos I enjoy working on cars .I'm building a 92 chevy stepside with 700r4 and I want to rebuild the transmission myself I can do everything else I want to do the transmission to
Great video. Im doing my own 700r4 and using this video and some books. Its a really good video. I said f it and trimed the load spring retainers some.
I'm about to attempt my first 700r4 rebuild thanks to this video!! Great Great help!. Can I use a bearing and seal driver in place of the bushing driver?
Man he explained it very well. If I am studying working on transmission I’ll watch this video. It’s just to much work for me every time I see different tools I get discouraged if live close to this guy I just bring my tranny to this guy get it fix by him.Excellent skills though!
These videos are amazing! I have two 91’ 700r4’s I need to have rebuilt. Both will be run with a sbc 350 and 4.11 posi rear end. What’s a good rebuild kit and torque converter I should order and what brands should I stay away from? Thank you 😎👍
For everybody watching this is actually a 4L60 transmission basically the same as the 700R4 except they installed a drive accumulator with a tube coming from the oil pump to the accumulator to soften the engagement into drive. When you take the oil pan off you can see the tube and the accumulator on the valve body That's how you can tell the difference
Did I misunderstand a post you made on these check balls, where you said that you only use 2 check balls and have great results?....I don't do enough of these to be confident and, once they are together, i keep second-guessing myself...your vids have helped me immensely, especially that one you did years ago on the 4L80E...
This has been an awesome video for me (along with part one) as I work through the disassembly and rebuild process of my 700r4. If you still monitor the questions on this Hiram, I have one. The green seal which is designed to separate the 3rd and 4th fluid, in my kit it was blue, and it seems a little loose to me. I goo’d it up with the green goo, but it only takes a slight knock and it comes out of its groove easy. I have since assembled the drum, I kinda hope it wasn’t knocked and is still seated. Do I need to disassemble and put a tighter seal on?
That filter seal should've snapped into place to where the filter removes without it, that's how you know it's properly seated but hey your the professional
You can use the low reverse roller clutch and the carriers it goes in out of a 4l60e and it way better than the 700r4 one they make couple different thickness of them plates to get the clearance where you want on the low reverse
Great videos, lot's of explanation. I'm doing a 700 for a friend, wondering if you could post a list of all the upgraded parts? The trans I'm doing is a 1985 model, friend is going to install it in a 1970 C10 truck with medium build 350.
Great video i followed all your steps , but im having a problem i installed the tran go kit (full manual) new gaskets , seals and all. i have no first gear , shifting from 2nd to 1st will stop the car. 1st gear feels like i have the brakes on the car doesn't move. any hint what i should check ? thanks
Iam talking about the load springs. You could take the return springs out and then grind down the plate to what you want then reinstall the plate and springs I would think. Just don't go crazy.....lol
That's actually what I do but didn't mention it to not cause controversy. What I do is grind it on my bench grinder just enough below flush the last steel. I remove the top clutch, grind and install springs. I do that to all 5.
Hey Hyram, the 700R4 I'm working on has 2 snap ring grooves at the low/reverse sprague support. Yours has 1? 1st ring sposed to hold clutch plates down. Or can I add extra plate and clutch and use 1 snap ring ?
I have a very early 700r4 I assume much the same as this one, what’s it cost ball park,to do this rebuild, more than my TH 350 I’m assuming?I tried pulling a junk 350 apart once and I won’t do that again and I can do the rest of a vehicle.
For the bushing install, isnt lt possible to freeze the bushing and heat the part it goes into and just drop in place? My father used to put a ring gear in the over and a flex plate in the freezer and mated the two pieces very easily.
Do you know who solved the problem with this transmission way back in the day?? He was an engineer that came from Dayton Tire. All of the Dealerships were sending warranty work to him.
I wish you would show the thicker pieces that go in front and or behind the friction disks and steels. I’ve gotten lost a few times and had to go back to before when you were just putting everything sort of together to see what you didn’t show. May have to find another video to see what you didn’t show.
Are used transmission cooker/cleaner expensive? And where can i buy one for cleaning parts? Or is there an alternative to use? Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge an expertise in all your videos. How to become a Patron? Thank you Jack.
@@AutomaticTransmission likely when the transmission started getting more precise electronic and hydraulic control features, someone just assumed they werent needed anymore, but what is likely, is the mechanical clutches just do not come on and off as quick as the electrical signals, and hydraulic inputs try to apply and release them due to centrifugal force, drag, and pressure. sometimes engineers make calculations and assumptions, but in the real work, they dont work they way they thing they will.. the technicians in the field are the ones who solve most of the problems in any field..
I watched this video step by step as I rebuilt the 700r4 on my 1990 Corvette. It shifts beautiful now, my only issue is when I put it into drive it slams into gear. Did I do something wrong somewhere? Any help would be appreciated.

Hiram, thank you for sharing you knowledge. I have learned so much from your videos.

So what was the issue with the pump? I have a 700r4 my pump won’t seat flush it will go down until there about a quarter inch gap then won’t move.

if the load springs cannot cause any problems, and may help the clutches come off, it seems it would make sense to just use them.
Of course, that's why I showed from old manuals both options leaving it for guys to decide on which would make sense to you and go from there.

that load release springs cage height issue is an interesting one! did anyone ever reach out to say they're making them shorter?
I like you Hiram. Good Job.
Is it Normal for the output shaft to turn real hard in one direction?
Hello,
cool video,
I'm going to overhaul my TH700R4 (C1500) after this video!
Will be my first automatic transmission!
I once learned to be a car mechanic!
But I still have a question!
Nothing has been oiled but only partially lubricated
Doesn't that damage the oil pump if it starts dry and has to suck in oil first?
Sorry translated with google
Rolf from Germany
No, but you can wet the pump rotor with transmission fluid for lubrication.
where is the check ball for the aux valve body ,never saw you putting there?
Is there a parts list you used for this build?
Why do they say to grind the land off on the pump pressure valve?
I have to rebuild a 1983 700R4 which is for a K5 Blazer. Do you recommend a particular brand for the overhaul kit? Thank you for the video.
nice video , thanks
When I apply air to forward clutch it come out the overrun port. What did I do wrong?
I noticed the bottom bolt hole for the case that holds the pump the case is busted ! Is that a problem!?!
yes!
What would cause a 700r4 to loose reverse
Hey need a little help I'm rebuilding a 86 700r4 30 spline non auxiliary and my pump is trashed I have a 88 auxiliary pump wondering if the pump will work if I block off the oil pipe hole in the pump
I rebuilt my 89 700r4 and there is no reverse what should I be looking/check?
What would cause a fresh rebuilt 700r4 not to shift into fourth gear
Hi Hiram . I got R700 early built without auxiliary valve body . Some one installed on jaguar 89 XJS and i need some information because transmission has couple valves blocked on valve body .
Also where do you get that vise that you use?
Look into a Mr Cool mini split unit.
I will, thanks.
