We do/did a mix of both for our 11 month old. We started with "purees for a few days" in the beginning and will also offer purees if we're missing a good veggie side, need something "fun" for the baby to eat, or need an on-the-go snack. It made a HUGE difference to teach our baby to use a straw first and now he can eat from the pouch directly if we let him.
I love this! We did both, pureed and baby led weaning food when he showed signs on wanting to eat what we were eating. If he wanted to try then we always offer (if it wasn’t spicy, we are mexican and almost all our meals we add salsa lol). He is a 14 months now and we literally meal prep from our meal preps for the week so he eats what we eat so it’s awesome and easy. When were going to go out and baby has been showered and dressed we will spoon feed him so he doesn’t get dirty. Both work and luckily he isn’t a picky eater. We are able to go to restaurants and order him food and he eats. Usually whatever we eating regardless of what it is he wants and eats it.
We did baby lead weaning. At first it was scary.. worried about chocking. But it worked out well for us. Baby has been feeding himself since he was 6 months old…
I’m feeding my 8 month purées right now, but I’m interested in getting him used to textures. I’m curious to try baby lead weaning, but I am so utterly cautious about choking. It seems to be working for so many parents that I think I’m just missing something… and also my anxiety and need to hover over my child would be too much. I think some info on choking and tips on assuring ourselves would be helpful. And even good starter foods :) thank you!
We are done having kids, but your videos have gotten so good and while you're really videos focused much more on figuring out what monitor works best rather than spending so much on a camera that is no different then those 10 years before. I love that you're covering so much more valuable information for new parents. Keep up the great videos and I'm definitely going to share with family and friends new to it all.
Best thing we did was get one of those plastic mats that allow office chair wheels to roll (off ebay). Easy to clean under the high chair and see-through so it wasn't an eye sore!
Would love to see more videos detailing our processes of baby led weaning! Really love this channel. Also more on gagging versus choking, how to deal with early allergens and introduction..
We bought a high chair food catcher... it's a big tray that slips over the legs of the high chair and works as a little shelf where they drop food. Kind of like those candle protectors that protect your hands when you hold them. It's really good and so much easier than cleaning off the floor.
We started doing solid foods and BLW around 4 months old (mostly using purees mixed with bananas to make small sweet or savory pancakes). Once we made our way through all the high-allergen foods, we then moved on to smaller/more easily edible versions of whatever we were eating. It made the whole process so much easier and helped us introduce our son to so many foods. Now he eats anything and everything which makes going out to eat as a family so much easier. One big benefit that we found too (and it's very scary at first) is that they learn how to keep themselves from choking on something. If for some reason something doesn't go down the right way, he's learned to get it up and out of his mouth without any issue. Great video as always!
We did baby led weaning on our first 2 (3rd on the way). We really loved the process and although we were a bit timid with the first baby, the 2nd baby got exposed to much more variety and frequency of meals much faster. It did cause some premature weaning from breast milk, but the pediatrician was ok with it considering the uptick in solid food and consistent weight. He's still getting some nursings in, but definitely relies on his 3 meals at the table with us. We found the little silicone cup (looks like a stemless wine glass) to be awesome for them both and the weight is perfect. Additionally, smocks instead of bibs have been a huge sanity saver with cleanup and help to reduce the amount of food that is wasted when it falls between the baby and the high chair since we can just "fluff" the smock back up and recover the food onto the tray again. For this, we specifically use the 4moms high chair and sandwich the free flap of the smock between the 2 layers of the tray to make it a seamless transition from tray to smock.
Noticed you didn’t talk about the heavy metal content debate as well. Did that just feel like too niche of a subject? Great video! Thank you for addressing the MESS.
We did BLW starting at 6 months and even tho I thought it had been around for ages people still looked at us like hippies 😂 however, yes it’s messy, yes I got anxiety because fear of choking but geez best decision ever! You need a dog Andrew! Dogs are my vacuum 😅
Hey you can buy a wipeable splash mat or two for under the highchair (there are loads on amazon). Then at the end of each day just pick up large bits of food with kitchen towel or used napkins, and shake off crumbs into compost bin, out in garden or wherever, and wipe or wash the mat if necessary (but a mat that is repellent is usually fine with just a wipe-down with some all-purpose cleaner on most days). Hope this tip can help you with baby number 3 😅
I wonder as well how many long term studies have been done about blw helping more with adventurous eaters down the line. I feel we although didn't follow blw directly we did it a bit more with our daughter than son and she seems to not be as picky now than he was at this age. But different kids are so much more different so it may just be that. Just intrusively doing the classic puree and puffs for motor skills I could see tunneling the food experience.
Hey Andrew, great video and can totally relate with the futile task of brushing eggs 😆 thankfully our saving grace was our dog lol 🐶. Anyways I love the content, great lighting techniques, and awesome depth of the shot with background. I bet people would love to learn about sippy vs straw vs open cup eventually - feeding littles like you said is a great resource for that as well.
Im just gonna let the dog eat the food on the floor xD id take into account the dog will likely eat the baby led weaning foods and use puree for non dog friendly foods. But id probably make my own puree.
Just one of the many reasons to have a dog, my brother is doing the same with his dog. I just have 2 cats but one eats like a dog so I might get lucky 🐱
I really liked this overview but just not your conclusions. What do you mean “your baby might miss out on some of those opportunities to experience textures and develop those fine motor skills?” You said so yourself earlier in the video, all babies will get to solids eventually, it might be just starting one or two months earlier. It’s not the case that your baby will be “missing out” on anything no matter which method works best for your family.
Yep. I totally agree! I've seen parents doing blw in a wrong way and baby ended up eating too fast , indigestion, and choking. I like some comments suggesting hybrid and the food we introduce in the beginning has to be soft for sure.

Yes please. Please do a video on all the things.

Yeah we definitely had the same fears. This is a good read for anyone with similar concerns: bit.ly/3ruOkc7

Such an awesome tip!
This is an amazing tip!!
This is gold 🙌

Yes! Please continue on this topic!

Cool to hear your journey man. Hearing them gag up food is always such a scary feeling.

Hey Andrew! My baby girl will be born in June! Your videos have helped me learn so much! Thank you!
Congrats man, love hearing this!
Wow same thing my baby girl is supposed to be born June 6th an these videos have taught me so much!
Great video! Something helpful would be eating supplies including plates, bowls, utensils, cups, floor mats, bibs vs painters outfit vs naked baby 😅
Could you please do a video on choking.

Great videos, thank you! Please do a a couple of video son choking and more details on baby led weaning. Thanks!

Would love the one step further explanation of BLW!
Choking and open cup vs sippy cup please. I kind of go back and forth between the 2 lol.

Can you please do a video on BLW and chocking?
Or like how to help a chocking baby?
thanks for the video! your discount code doesn't work on feedinglittles tho :(

Would love to see choking vs gagging video
Can you do a combo of baby led weaning and purées?
You can definitely take a hybrid approach.
More details
Best investment for blw for us... dogs. Yep, clean up time is cut in half.
😂
