I remember for years going nuts because I couldn't figure out how Cookie Monster's googly eyes worked, then finally getting a chance to see the puppet up close (there's one on display down at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta), coupled with the birth of HD cameras, I nearly kicked myself because it was so obvious.

Love this, totally going to use this. If you were to only put the hole threw the plastic and let the velvet be over the top it would hide the ‘little nail’ completely, Just a thought. Thanks for the great video!

You should add this to ALL of your puppets! Like...... especially if they have some sort of episode of drinking a highly caffinated/sugary drink. And then switch back to their normal eyes for the scene when the sugar/caffeine 'high' wears off. You can take it a step further, by just making a set of different eyes, that you can simply design to be interchangeable for your puppet. You can have eyes with either stationary or moving spiral patterns, or even eyes that light up on the inside (with LEDs) like diffused lamps. Kinda useful if you have puppets that might have superpowers or a dual/secret identity in a story.

Tamiya makes drills small enough. (I'm not sure where else to find them - but we use them on model airplanes and the like - they'll fit a needle for sure) As a note, Excel also makes small drills, going down to .039 mm, but they're more expensive. (having an actual drill bit will help with the safety issues, though)
