When exporting the final video from iMovie, it's possible that the animated graphic doesn't save during export. So after you export your iMovie file, save it to your desktop, open it up, watch it all the way through - NO ANIMATION. Can you explain WHY?
THANK YOU!! This is exactly what I was looking for. I really wanted to added animated graphics without hiring someone or using expensive editing plug ins. You literally just saved me a lot of time and money. Also, thanks for making this clear and concise. Straight to the point: no filler or wasted time. Amazing!
You have no idea how frustrating it was to learn this I watched a course of a guy explaining how to use after effects and premiere for 2 hours!! And this is all I wanted to learn omg I love you
Awesome video, thank you so much!!! For those who have the Catalina issue (the animated graphic's background appears black in iMovie although it is exported as transparent from Keynote) I just tested another idea: instead of setting the background on Keynote as transparent (no fill), make it green, export as movie ProRes 4444 (so follow the rest of Luise's instructions) and in iMovie, put the animated clip on your main timeline clip, go up right to Cutaway (if you can't find it it appears when you click those two squares on top of each other on the left) and select Green/Blue screen. The background will become transparent and you have the same effect ;)
Simply saying thank you isn't enough! This will help me a lot because I am a new youtuber and I use iMovie so I don't have to pay for other video editing softwares! (Ima poor teenager btw)
I'm thinking about starting a UA-cam channel about starting second careers later in life, and must tell you how helpful ALL of your videos have been for an 'older fellah'. Thanks for your hard work and clear presentation.
My wife has just started her YT career and we were not in a position to spend more on an advanced video editor or pay for logo animations. I managed to create a logo for her after learning for a while and now this video has really injected some energy in me that I can create something great for her. I am so thankful and grateful that I could learn this for free.
Woohoo! I'm so glad it was helpful! Here is another UA-cam video that may be helpful for the new channel: ua-cam.com/video/9oYrilt6AoI/v-deo.html 🙂Wishing you and your wife so much success!

Yesss Thank you! I was just looking for this for my last video! Excited to put it to use this week! PS: I found you from your blog, specifically the one about turning your UA-cam Videos into IGTV! So Thaaaank You! 💕
Hi, I just want to know if I am doing it wrong but when I drag the animation on top of my clip, it's still black in the background. I watched your video like 5x back to back to make sure I am doing it right...do you have an idea? Thanks
Hey guys! I just tested it - if you have the latest version of Keynote, you also have to check the box that says "Export with transparent backgrounds" So when you've completed your animation, you'll click "File" > "Export To" > "Movie" > "Resolution: Custom..." > check "Apple ProRes 4444" and ALSO check "Export with transparent backgrounds" :)
@@louisehenry I put a blue or a green background to and if you set up (in iMovie) your animation in the good setting for the blue or green background it's okay :) Thank you!!
This was SO helpful! I hadn't even heard of Keynote before you mentioned it in this video, but it's definitely on my computer. Thanks for this great tip!
Tomas Kristiansen you can download transparent icons from the Noun Project for free as long as it’s not for commercial use. There are a bunch of places online that provide free transparent icons if you google!
Tomas Kristiansen I would check out flaticon or freepik. There’s also wiki commons or even look on dafont for symbol fonts that are free for commercial use. You can also download from Canva on a solid color background and use the free photoshop like program called “gimp” that will let you remove the background
Neil Mossey You can definitely download on Canva with a solid white or other colored background and then use Photoshop or Gimp to remove the background!
I feel like i'm missing a step... when I move from Keynote to iMovie the back ground is black and not transparent... I will continue to trouble shoot this but maybe you have a tip or a nudge in the right direction?
Thank you for this! I attempted to do it myself, however unlike your video that allows your graphics to lie on top of your video mine only shows the black screen and the graphic until that section ends and then my video continues. @Louise Henry

Several others have commented below that the technique does not work, possibly as a result of OS Catalina. I had the same experience on my MacOS Catalina running Keynote 9.2 and Canva Pro. After playing around a bit, I found a possible workaround. I bypassed Canva and just built the animated graphic on a blank canvas in Keynote. After making sure that the "no fill' option was selected as Louise had suggested, I exported the file as an "Animated GIF". When I imported it into iMovie, it worked for me for a test graphic.
this totally works. I used Canvas and followed all the instructions Luise gave here - awesome video btw, thank you soooo much Solopreneur Sidekick! - and just exported as animated GIF. The duration of the clip was significantly shorter, no idea if this was because of my settings, or if that's just the nature of GIFs, but I solved the problem by copy-pasting the last frames in order to keep the end longer. Not very elegant, but worked for now ;) thank you very much David! (For me it was a Catalina, not a Keynote version problem)

Great tip, I didn't realize you could export a video from Keynote. The only issue I see is that Keynote doesn't give you an option to set the framerate for the exported video, and just exports in 30 fps. This is fine if your timeline is 30 fps, but if you want to put into a 24 fps timeline without frame skipping, it's going to play back a little slower.
