As long as there is always a Quest for the enthusiasts (and I do NOT mean a $1K+ "pro"), and the lower end version doesn't hamstring the games for the entire generation, I don't mind there being an affordable option at all. The 3s is a great solution for kids, people who want to dabble, the thrifty, or people who want to try VR out for the first time. Bundling Batman is also a pretty smart move for the holidays. Normally I'd bet a bit jealous but I got Asgards Wrath II bundled with my Q3, so fair is fair.

Yes but you can get that "benefit" in Quest 3, just use the Games Optimizer to reduce the resolution and get better performance with slightly shittier graphics
Since it's a 's' model thats focussed on affordability, it uses the same XR2 chipset as the 3. Performance should theoretically be the same since it's the same chip, but maybe they optimized it a bit because it's newer.
You’ll see a bit improvement on fps and performance but nothing crazy, and the battery should last a little bit longer not playing in almost 4k resolution this is closer to 2k resolution

People seem to be very upset about the lack of a headphone jack. I honestly see two very simple solutions for that: Either you get a dedicated pair of wireless headphones like the Soundcore VR P10 that work without any noticeable delay if you have the cash. Or the industry will almost certainly come out with a cheap dongle that you can plug into the USB-C port with charging passthrough and a headphone jack.
damn no headphone jack is kind of a killer. I'm always using wired headphones on my Quest 3 since the latency is just so bad with bluetooth options, especially AirPods
My daughter is showing a vague interest in vr and has been playing walkabout mini golf on my quest 3 with me, while I join her on my psvr2. Considering a 3s for her as I could keep the batman game which would be £40ish anyways and then game share my Q3 games with her. Wonder if the 3 months quest+ would still apply as I still have a month left on my 6 month free trial...?

If you haven't seen the pancake lenses before, you are good to get a Quest 3S. Also yes the inserts will be forward compatible, because that are the exact same hardware from the quest 2.

If you have a Quest 3, I'd wait for the quest 5. If the quest 4 really does come in 2-3 years we won't see as big of a leap. Now if Meta holds off until 2030 to release quest 4, then it absolutely will be a massive jump. The quest 3S tells me they want to anchor down with quest 3 hardware for longer. Giving people time to upgrade from quest 2 and for newcomers to see what it's all about The budget quest 2 absolutely needed an upgrade, but the 3 is really only just starting to get good.

VR isn't widely adopted yet, a 3S can be trash to you, but to a person who has never touched this technology, I promise you, they'll either be blown away or still not a fan of VR. Psvr2 is only better than the quest if you have a $500 console or a pc to plug it into and quest 3 optics are way better than psvr2, outside of The OLED

One advantage of the 3S is that it will have better binocular overlap than the Quest 3. That's one area the Quest 3 is rather bad at.

@AlexanderTCardosi you call 12 months slowly phasing out? Pretty sure people that bought Q2 12 months ago at £300 will be mighty annoyed that the great new games coming out, won't be available for it.
Look I get products get phased out. Ps4 had what 7 years of great times. Quest 2 had half that. Sure its early stages of VR etc.
What I find cheeky as fook is meta selling Q2 5 months ago (hyping the price drop) for £200. Knowing full well that games coming out will either not be supported or look like a bag of rusty nails.
12 months ago they were selling the q2 for £400... months before the quest 3 release.
Its greedy as fook. Meta just getting rid of spare units.
