This is a new one for the channel. I've spent time making wrecked or abandoned cars run but I haven't had the chance on something that was burned.
The car is a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata, one of 5400 produced, and the only factory turbocharged Miata. I own and run a full service auto salvage operation in the Saint Louis area and we go through great lengths to get cars to run so we can stand behind critical components and offer good warranties. This car suffered a pretty rough engine bay fire and was subsequently totaled where I bought it from the salvage pool auction. I didn't even know mileage. In this video I go through all the damage to try to find out mileage and crudely attempt to get it running.
As always I love all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism.
Catch you on the next teardown!

You've vindicated every single time anyone has ever said "I'm going to save that because I might need it later." Thank you for your service!
My mom always got SO angry at my dad because he saved everything. You have no idea how many times he was able to fix one of her cars from doing so lol
As an old certified electronics tech and a long time gearhead, your troubleshooting skills and use of tech are impressive and I didn't even mention your gearhead humor and your excellent videography skills! Now you can add to your accomplishments, taking a literal pile of melted plastic and charcoal and making it run like new in a very short time. This engine now has a video taped public history that was viewed by thousands! The engine and video should be auctioned together as a package so a proud Miata owner can claim celebrity status. Eric, don't under estimate the value!
Malice in the Miata palace.
I am stunned. That's seriously impressive by any standard.
Ermagerd! I have to say I never thought it would run. Seriously impressive!
"I don't want coolant spilling out on the shop floor".
Turbo: Hold my pressure.
And just like that, wow haha I would have been pushing the button on the crusher. You are persistent Eric!
It’s an Eric thing 😉
@@I_Do_Cars haha must be😁
That definitely wasn't fake joy when it fired up. I couldn't believe how smooth it ran after just coming out of what must've been a very long slumber.
If I could have left 10 likes, I would have. I don't know how you manage to keep such a cheerful demeanor working through all that wiring. Excellent!
You’re a miata wizard man. No way did most of us think you could get that thing to run.
Awesome job Eric! It's great to know that you test your products before you sell them even if they are used. Also, definitely a proud moment for a sentimental memory.
it's not hording, it's saving. lol! I'm saving a lot then... btw...what a dumpster fire, love it
This was one of your best efforts Eric, if not the best. You worked the problems one by one and were rewarded with success. I truly enjoyed this from start to finish, and am seriously impressed with your diligence and skill. This is why your channel is successful, and why your fans support you.
Excellent job, sir, excellent job.
I can’t believe he got that thing running lol!
It's so much fun to dig into engines and take cars apart. The worst part is putting them back together. 😄 I was in the hospital for 5 1/2 weeks (just got out about a week ago) and I watched your videos every day to keep myselfbfrom dying from boredom, so Thank you for posting your content!
Hope you can get back on your feet and in the garage soon
I know how that feels
I agree, you try and keep all the parts in order so you can find them when wanted, but, you know, all workshops have this genie who comes along when your not looking and moves things around. Mine even moves things into the kitchen, next to where I make a cup of tea. I hope you are now well, and having fun taking your coffee machine apart. Happy Christmas
You’re the Adam Sandler to car guys. Master of your craft and a true entertainer. Thank you for your content, this one was excellent!
Unbelievable Eric!! One hell of a job!!
In my experience as an import technician the Miata seemed to be their best quality vehicle. It seemed to be 100% Mazda as opposed to their other vehicles that were FoMoCo cousins.
I love these revival videos! We’ve become such a disposable society, it’s nice to see something (that’s not completely destroyed) brought back to life and given another chance…
I wouldn't even know where to begin... this was an amazing journey to watch. I really appreciate your technical expertise and problem solving abilities. Also, I loved how at the end when it finally started up from its long long slumber, it puked out all that water. It is as if you were the lifeguard resuscitating a drowned swimmer after they had been pulled from near death.
I commented on one of your recent videos, "I'm not sure how you're going to top yourself," but you keep finding a way. Great work and determination, really impressive.
I'm glad you took the time to resuscitate this one. Like you said, it's special. I can look past the damage to see what a beautiful car it was.
An hour long video and trying to start an engine. this is a good day.
Good thing you did not try to connect the turbo hoses.... boom. Very entertaining. Love what you do. I learn little bits and pieces of tech from watching you do your thing. thanks for sharing
You are one hell of a mechanic...good on you..👍👍👍👍
You know you’re in for a tough day when the wiring diagram becomes necessary. You’re a more patient man than me
Wiring diagram is the first place to look if you can.
Your joy at the end of this was the best. We've all been there, doing tons of work only to not succede, but when you do ...woohoo!
great when a plan comes together like that and runs
I've only discovered your channel in the last week and have been binging. This video has been epic to watch and really was cheering for you for a good outcome all the way!
Love the troubleshooting and in the end It actually ran!! WOW! Nice work Eric!
Good message to share... even though that car was "well done".. you never gave up! That little beast of an engine will have another life putting lots of smiles on faces!!
I also "horde" or more correctly save parts.. saved me many times.
Nice work mate and cheers from Aus!
You got a good engine and 2/3's of a Miata to part out. Looks like a winner!
Couldn't help adding this laugh line, Even the engine couldn't believe it was running, it gagged on coolant and had to spit it out through the turbo hose it was laughing so hard.
Not only was it the best of your videos, I cannot think of anything that the other Tubers have done that is better. Watched countless videos from Florida, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Tennessee and California and this one is brilliant. Good on ya Eric. Now maybe one of them 'fixer upper' channels will buy the whole beast from ya and turn it in to a driving unit. Cheers and Thank you!!
Worth every minute. We all know the feeling of “ok, this is the last thing I’ll try and then no more” but the puzzle must be solved. All of your videos are great fun and educational but your wouldn’t-touch-it-with-a-ten-foot-pole car projects are a blast! Thank you.
I have a feeling that there were a lot of us cheering along with you when that thing "fired" up. Great job!
Unbelievable! When I first looked at that engine, and then saw you cutting harness wires and prying on things, I said to myself there's no way he's going to be able to start it. You really pulled a rabbit out of a hat on this one. Amazing work!
A long, stringy rabbit ;) I was thinking "no way" until he whipped out that other engine with complete harness. Then I started thinking, "maybe..."
I legitimately laughed at the reveal of your solution to get the fire engine working.
Edit:
Also, I will add. This video was entirely worth it and Im glad it worked out for you.
You are a great mechanic! That is great diagnostic work!
It's not hard...trust me
@@dopeman420 I guess that’s easy for you to say….
I know this is a month old but thank you it was fun to watch the journey. Just to share with your viewers and I probably don't have to tell you, the Miatas get alot of the harness grounding from the two ground blocks mounted under both headlights. Bad grounds there can cause a lot of electrical gremlins. Of course, those were toasted on your project. You are a Miata person! You should come out to WWT Raceway May 6-7 and watch the SCCA Spec Miata racing. It's in your backyard. If you come, stop by our pit and say Hi. #51👽
I am amazed by this video! How you made that run, the amount of diagnosing you did, just incredible! I love all your videos but this one was special. Great Job!
Its clear he knows Miatas in and out...
so much work involved just to see if it would run, not sure if i would have done the same. you are a man of integrity, selling a part "verified" as running and not just a "should work, should fit" attitude cant wait for the next one!.
Your tenacity to keep going and good attitude is unbelievable. I kinda gritted my teeth at the length of time you ran the motor. A grate video.
Well done. I have 3 decades experience solving systems integration issues (hardware/software) and this is remarkable work.
Very impressive Eric. I thought for sure that was a lost cause!
Brake fluid is flammable
But man! We appreciate the tenacity and the dedication for the videos! 3 nights to film? Hopefully your wife still loves you 🤣
Astonishing. Recently discovered your channel, and it's already one of my favorites. And having viewed a bunch of your tear downs, I will NEVER be late with an oil change (or any other prevenitive maintenance) ever again.
Gotta see a complete tear down of this. I want to see what you keep and what you toss out. I wanna see a bare shell!!
That's sad. I love Miata's. It looks like it was lives and very well cared for.
Always sad to see nice cars like the blue miata smashed up and gotten rid of.... I had the unfortunate pleasure of wrecking the front end of my 92' Miata pretty bad, but I bit the bullet and had it fixed because I love that car so much.
Incredibly impressive! Just navigating through the electronics says it all. You are the Master, and why I love this channel. Keep up the great work!!
Dude, just fixed a nuker, cause I had the parts. I'm always fixing things with "spare parts". I'm like you that way, I salvage what can't be fixed, for things that can be fixed. One never knows when they need something! Great video; mammoth undertaking. Kudos!
Had some serious doubts but you pulled it off. Bravo!
This is the most Mad Max apocalyptic car fix I have ever seen! This is epic! I wish I had just an ounce of your car knowledge! This is awesome!
I really enjoyed watching this type of video. I enjoy seeing you tear apart engines, but this is also very enjoyable. Like you had a goal and reached it. I liked seeing your other videos where you are rebuilding damaged vehicles as well. Keep up the awesome vids!
Makes me remember a time when an engine had a distributor
and a carburettor a starter motor and that was it!
You been looking under my 58 cadillacs hood?? Lol.
This is a good video idea for your channel. Will it run? I bet they'd do well and they're fun to watch like this video. Man this video was so cool! Awesome to hear it run after all that work!
As an Australian watchmaker/car fanatic, to see how you approach the challenges of the cars you buy, is similar to how I go about fixing a watch )) I love what you do Eric, and you inspire. Thank you.
Probably the best car related video I’ve ever watched on this platform. I’d love to know how many times you thought wtf am I doing, this could be hours of work for nothing. I’m glad you persisted because it was so worth it to vindicate your decision to try. Amazing, just amazing 👍
To each, his own. I and most mechanics would have done a leak down test and called it a day. The thing with leak down tests is that they don't show if the engine has worn bearings or low oil pressure. So for you who sells used engines, I can see why you wanted to hear the engine run. You want to avoid having someone return an engine you sold them as much as mechanics want comebacks. Mickey Mouse would have laughed at you for doing that wire harness swap but you would have shut him up after getting the engine to run. Shows how much you care.👍👍👍
definitely something no one should ever spend the time on doing... But i'm certainly glad you did!
Loving the "does it run" videos. Keep the content rolling!
Love it when a "should I do this" turns into a "glad I did that". Replace the pig belts (the squealing ones) and whatever causes the cough after letting out of the throttle, and this should be good as used.
Nicely done. YES!!! lol
I'm probably in the minority here but I prefer watching you fixing stuff rather than tearing them down. This, the 911 series and the E21 were all super enjoyable to watch and definitely my favourite content from you! Hell, I'd certainly watch a full restoration on this Miata but you sounded like you don't wanna get into that. Anyway, hope we get to see more videos like this in the future.
Omg. I wouldn’t tackle that job for no amount of money. Good job!
That’s not bad 10 hrs I thought more. Like others have said your troubleshooting skills are impressive. I enjoyed this video. Thanks for putting the time into making it in a world where everything is go go go
Dude that was awesome; congrats; well done.
Way to go Eric. Success is always are harder than failure! YES!
I’m currently trying to fix my 1999 ram work van . Its a coil /injector 12v power wire acting like a ground . Chasing dark green and orange wire looking for a short.
Your video inspired me .
Awsome job! shame it burned but at least there is a lot of salvageable parts. great video!
I was expecting "it's alive....it's A-LIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!" at the telling moment
Having extinguished many car fires back when I was volunteering for a local fire dept I can smell this video.
Gosh, i freakin love this channel, knowledge and comedy, best combination ever !
EDIT: after watching the all video... absolutely BRILLIANT ! That was impressive ! Probably one of your best video so far, i could feel your satisfaction from here !
There's nothing quite as satisfying as when the parts you've been hoa...um, saving, are just what you need on a different project.
I love your positivity Eric and been following you for a while now. Keep up the great work, from UK..
So many HP it takes two hoods to hold them in. WOW!!!
What an amazing video... and now I don't feel so bad that I have entire sheds filled with VW 36 and 25HP parts that I might never use. :) Thanks!!
Wow! This is my new favorite I Do Cars video! I have seen these burned cars in pick-a-part and often wondered to myself if the engine was any good under all the burned plastic. I really really liked watching this video- please try to do it again soon! It is really funny that both you and Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics are releasing Mazda Miata videos within hours of each other and you are both working on the immobilizer
And here I was starting to worry you only had one normal sized pry bar. Blue does have friends!
I really like what you do. These are very enjoyable videos. Fun to watch.
Side note, you seem like a very wholesome down to earth guy. Keep up the good work!!
with many things, people seem to have more & more fun as they reach levels near mastery of their craft -- and looks like you just had a lot of fun!
Fun fact, and perhaps apropos to this, they stopped making the Mazdaspeed Miata because the factory that made them burned to the ground. There were supposed to be something like 8,000 made, originally.
When the dash powered up and I saw the measly 93k miles on the odo, I cried. He died too young.
So much joy watching you tear through the wiring harnesses. I learned a little about mine while you did that 😁
Serious kudos for getting it running. I hope the engine lives on in another chassis.
Long live the nb. 💕❤
Employees the next morning: I ain't cleaning that up.......
I truly didn't think this heap would ever start, considering the amount of heat all of those sensors encountered! Great job indeed!
This is better than all those other “resurrection “ videos!
This was a blast! Electrical diagnostic is my weakest skill, but I can follow the logic and it was really interesting to follow along.
Saying you were cheating, just isn't true. That would be like calling you a cheat for using tools. Such a nice change seeing something come alive, instead of an autopsy. Well done!
It's a crying shame this car is VIN banned. It could be properly repaired and restored if someone wanted to do so badly enough. I think the car is special enough to deserve it. Glad you at least gave it a little more love before it got dissected. Also, as for "I wish this part was on fire a little bit less," that is likely where the fire started. This looks like an electrical fire to me. "Everything is nicely done here." Yes, very well done. It definitely hit that 160 degree internal temperature to kill the bacteria. :)
That was an insane video showing the insane effort. Seriously impressive Eric. I think we all reacted the same way too :D
I’m total impressed with your electrical trouble-shooting skills and your ability to pretzelize your body to reach under the dash! Fantastic job!
Hey man, you had fun, we had fun, everybody had fun.... Its called a win win, win... Seriously, that was an enjoyable video... Regards...
I have no idea how one person knows so much about vehicles. Amazing. A true master of his craft.
1 year later... I now drive a powerchair, but I used to run MX5 [UK name for Miata]. First cheap one my brother-in-law bought on my behalf but did not drive it and thus failed to discover that only one brake worked which made it exciting to drive until fixed. We loved it and when the sills fell out bought the best low mileage rust-free mk2 on the UK market and ran it until I developed motor neurone disease and could no longer maintain it. We found it a new owner who understood what he was getting and now have a remarkably quick Renault turbo diesel van which my wife drives like everything else she has ever driven - vigorously! Thanks for all these videos - they take me back to happy memories. love from Rick
Not that I had any doubt about Eric's skills, but I'm effing amazed he got it running, lol....
Great Job! U surprised me by getting it running!
absolutely stunned you got that running, just unreal! well done
YESYESYESYES!!! I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Great job, sir!
Definitely a good one and fun getting it running for sure! Funny, Ivan posted a Miata video too and pretty sure he needs the immobilizer module.
Sounds like it runs pretty nice. The engine itself would probably be good to rebuild. And the car itself as a whole has quite a few good parts.
In some states (California being one) that car can be restored. After restoration it would carry a "salvaged" mark on the title. It would also need "Brake and Light" inspection by the Calif. Highway Patrol. Then it would be good to go.
Very well done, you deserve a big YES after that effort, however it was the doner harness that did the trick although given time I'm sure that you could have possibly got it going with the original harness. Different entertaining video from your normal engine strip downs👍😏🇬🇧
One of my favorites..love the engine teardowns but really enjoy the work on the full cars as well. Can't stop watching!
