    Today we're working on a crucial part of turning out YZ250 into a offroad machine. We're going to try and install a wr gearset into our YZ gearbox! The gears came from a 2002 wr426, and there's a little grinding to be done in order to make these new cogs fit into their new homes.

    I misspoke in the video. The doner gearset is from a 2002 wr426, not a 2003!

    Nice video!!! One trick I have learned along the way is to use an ink roller to apply the liquid gasket. It is how they apply it at some assembly factories like Rotax. It works great, a nice uniform application and it stays out of your dowel holes / threaded holes.

    Can the bolt hole still bring trouble by creating some sort of turbulence in the oil when the gears are spinning?

      the spinning gears will create far more turbulence than the small bolt hole.

  • @fmxr47

    Not trying to correct but want to ask. was the gear set from a 03-05 450 or from the 01-02 426. 2003 was when the 450 was introduced and the 426 ended in 2002. Figured this may be worth mentioning incase anyone tried to follow the same path as you and may ende up with the wrong parts. I'm not sure if they changed transmissions between the 450 and 426 though.

    Awesome video! How do the gear ratios of the 2002 wr426 differ to that of the stock YZ250 and the YZ250X? I've got a YZ and YZX and both transmissions could do with some tweaking. I'd love the YZX 3rd in the YZ and maybe the YZX 4th to replace the 5th in the YZ, giving the YZ longer legs and a more usable 3rd. While in the YZX, Id like 5th to not be so long, and possibly even 4th. I love both bikes, but both bikes have their floors. I'd appreciated you opinion and keep up the good work!!

    • @TheShredist
      @TheShredist  Рік тому +2

      I only got one ride before the snow came, but the wr set in this bike is amazing. Went back to factory yz gearing with the sprockets (i had been gearing down to compensate for the tall first) and the wr 1st can crawl as low as you need now. Spread seems very even throughout the gears, and I wasnt able to find the top of 5th on the straights like I did with the yz trans and geared down sprockets. Again I need more seat time on it, but I think this should definitely be the gearset yamaha puts in their offroad models, its amazing in the woods now.

I have already installed the heavier flywheel and went to a 48T rear sprocket and she rides really good for trail rides! I’ve always wanted to do this to my bike, but I’m too worried I’d put it back together and still have extra parts that I forgot went back into the assembly.
    If/when you do a carb rebuild I’d be super into seeing that process. Probably something a few of us could learn from.
