Weird to hear the Master himself reading one of his stories. I always thought of him as some sort of demi-god to be honest. I owe this man a lot, he helped me improve my English in the most delightful way, through reading.
I always tell people what a funny writer Stephen King is, I can always tell the ones who only know him by the movies because they only think of him is the master of horror. Mr. King is a brilliant and a very clever writer. I'm not surprised at the laughing. Maybe the guy didn't realize how close he was to the microphone?
I don't know if you will see this, as your comment is three years old, but I used to coach forensics (speech and storytelling), and an example is "Last Rung on the Ladder." So human, so heart wrenching. I recommend!
Thank you thank you thank you!!! Ive been reading SK books since I was 13 and now I'm 56. It's been a nice long road and SK seems like an old friend...so thank you
Easy everyone. It's more the camera AV guy's fault. He didn't mute the host's mic so obviously, we were able to hear everything he was saying or in this case, whenever he was laughing. You could hear other people laughing in the background too, so its not like he was crazy.
Man, I just love that story. Even if it doesn't send the best message. Being destined to repeat all your bad mistakes sounds like a kind if hell. Stephen King is my hero!
Interesting, refreshing to watch sk read a story. He has a pleasant voice only the guy laughing out.loud was a bit disturbing as well as the people walking back and forth. Great short story by the master of deep chills. I was brought back to my childhood when listening to this, actually it creeped me out a little, (it was like he'd pulled the storyline from my mind,) for my big sister broke off my little brother's pinky finger when she slammed the door on him. I remember looking at the dismembered digit, hanging by a single stringy flesh and feeling quite faint.
What an absolutely gorgeous piece of storytelling. Yes the laughing man tried to ruin it. If I get the chance to come back maybe I can hold onto the memory of this man and stop his reign of terror before it starts.
When Mr. King says the bit about the masterbation learner's permit and everyone laughs. I imagine the guy up front looking around and being enraged how Stephen is able to hear others laugh so he forcefully laughs louder than everyone else.
We all should probably be sad already because Stephen King is pretty old now and that means....you know....could be some random day. But I hope he is around for at least 10 more years. He should write a book about himself and his ideas about the real world in general.
I was there. Moderator was Dennis Lehane of Mystic River fame. Guy was sort of a yuk-yuk too cool for school putz. King did most of the hard work (fielding questions).
What a great story with one of the best story tellers ever!! What a shame about the BIG MOUTH though, because that was as close to perfect as you could get when listening to someone reading a story!! Thanks to umasslowell for sharing this, what an absolutely amazing experience. :-)
I just listened to Laurie before this. Having lost my husband a few years ago, my thoughts during that story were about Loyld losing his wife. Now this one, starting with a woman losing her husband. I think Mr. King is thinking about this inevitable conclusion to his marriage with Tabitha.
I'm over five minutes in and it's great. Except for the hyena. But, I'm gonna keep going because I'm a "Constant Reader" but really I wish the dude would hold the laughter. I think it's even distracting Uncle Stevie.
I wonder what Stephen was thinking about that psycho-sounding man in the audience; maybe he was wondering how he could use the guy in a future story, and making the most of the possibility. Even if someone forgot to turn off a mic near the braying donkey, he has to be able to tell from the system feedback that he is dominating the whole performance, and thus being obnoxious. He laughs at a lot of points, about which no one else in the audience does.
Some people are so rude. Such as this cackling rectum, that has to realize that his pretentious sounding laughter is annoying. I'm sure it's been pointed out to him by anyone close to him during his lonely existence. Because his laughter reveals he one of those people that farts loudly and inappropriately, and laughs hysterically. Thus revealing, few friends. Or perhaps he's near a mic and doesn't realize it. And I'm a stifled writer seeking an audience.

Guy on the stage with King was Dennis Lehane, author of Mystic River fame. He did an average job, at best, and kept trying to interject his I'M-SUCH-A-COOL-FANBOY attitude. Yes, including the stupid laugh. King did most of the work handling the crowd, and he was entertaining, with the small quibble that he retells the same old stories about being mistaken for Coppola, living in the poor section of Bangor, etc. Still a good appearance.
Exactly my thoughts!! My son and I are listening to it, and each time the dude laugh we look at each other, annoyed... What was funny about the "Better late than never" over the fire extinguisher?" *rolling eyes* But like you I'm a "Constant Reader" and will keep listening to it whatever what. Steve is the Master!
I don't know, I thought that was sort of funny. It is in response to the story about the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire...He just goes into a long story about people dying in a fire, then there is the "better late than never" fire extinguisher. It's somewhat humorous.
I understand how a laugh may be annoying but it saddens me that so many people were angered and put off watching the video because of the sound of happiness; someone was genuinely enjoying King's work and expressing it through a natural form. What is so wrong about that?
I didn't mind the laughing, they were funny lines. Besides, the guy laughing might've been a little embarrassed deep down, I can relate to that. After all, has anyone ever not been able to stifle a hearty laugh? It's nice to hear joy :)
For goodness sakes, take the microphone off the laughing guy while King is reading. Surely he didn't intend to interject himself into the King's story like that. Thought provoking story. Trying to erase negative laughing vibes so I can think about it.
It refers to the fire in the Triangle shirtwaist factory that was caused by someone smoking. The guy interviewing the man who had died worked at the factory. It was better to have the extinguisher later (after the horrific fire, than to not have it (God forbid there should ever be another fire, they would have the extinguisher for that fire.).
