I was thirty years old when 'the shining' came out. My wife left for the weekend and on friday night I started reading. I finished about two am sunday morning and I could not turn out the light. No book or movie had ever scared me up until the shining. When I had finished I didn't got to sleep until after sunup. It was a great experience.
Jim Bronaugh + I was reading IT while alone late one night. My daughter had a doll that could carry a conversation w/ you. About half way through the book I heard "DO YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH ME" in a demonic voice because the batteries were going dead. I freaked out. I put the doll in my car,locked it & for some reason put the book in the freezer. Like you I had a long night.(didn't have a TV) Got to love anyone that can tell stories that can get inside your head that way. Sorry for putting your likes at 13.

I love how he gives so much credit to his wife for Carrie. Yeah, he wrote it, but she had enough faith in him, his writing and the story to encourage him to finish and submit it. THAT'S a real partnership. And I love how he said, "I had to buy a present for my wife." Hell yeah, he did lol
@I am me Well … in all fairness I do see a sort of supplementary, parallel logic to it now, I just wasn’t personally thinking along the lines of insults. Maybe because I actually am in the art business. Nobody sits around waiting for the piece to sell itself. Nobody you will have heard of anyway xD
King's books helped me get through my shitty early teen years and for that he's my hero. While other kids were being normal and social, I was being my quiet self stuck up in my room and reading some king books.

I've read many of his books to compensate for a lot of my lonely times until I developed a positive plan to improve my life. Exceptional writers and their books are threapeautic for many people.
Define normal. You probably avoided making some stupid mistakes thanks to Mr King. I didn't discover him until I was 17. The previous 6yrs were nothing but hanging out partying. By 17 I'd decided to get my $h¡# together. I started hanging out with Mr King a lot. Caught a lot of flack about it from "friends" & family. My brother told me " books are for dummies". Trust me,you didn't miss anything & you're perfectly "normal".
Last year I collected all his work in hardcover. Reading them in publication order. So far Carrie, The Shining, Salem’s Lot, Night Shift. All great stuff.
I was sixteen or seventeen. My first book was Carrie. I'm also 63. I believe I've read everything SK has written. He has become the ultimate leader in developing Characters.

I had an entire bookshelf full of his novels and I holed up in my room with my nose firmly planted in one novel after the next until my 18th birthday. Traded an asshole stepfather for a sadistic uncle (Uncle Sam). Stephen Kings novels followed me around the globe and got me thru some tough days in the army. This man has kept my sanity intact for many years and I am truly grateful for it.

Me too. Can you imagine how that would have felt for King? To be recognized and receive more adoration than a rockstar sitting right next to you? The thing is, I don't think King would be nearly as famous as he is if his books wouldn't have been turned into movies. Very few people knew who JRR Tolkien was, or JK Rowling, or Tom Clancy before their books became movies. It's Hollywood which makes them famous. King is just more famous because he wrote horror and people want to know what makes a man like that tick? What does he look like? How does he act? So people research them, Google them, etc. Therefore, he becomes more recognizable. Just my theory.
I hate social media but i love it. I would have never been able to get this knowledge years ago. I have learnt so much. It is what you use it for i guess. Thank you stephen and you tube!

King may be called a "horror writer" but he actually writes about real life. I just re-read Thinner and realized it's a metaphor for death by cancer. That's the "hidden depth" of his books and why they are so popular. He allows us to re-experience life and process those emotions. That's the main reason for his amazing success.
I have been a fan of Stephen King since the mid 70s. The first book i read was Carrie , i was hooked and sought out any book that he wrote. Salems Lot i have to admit is my all time favorite and i have read it seven times and still get the chills. While reading it i got so spooked that i was locking all the windows and doors. Stephen Is a brilliant author and man, I would give anything to have just one hour with him just to talk.
That was some story. Made even more enjoyable as read to the audience by mr. King himself. The last line was a real killer, caught a damn particle in my eye.

Mine was to procure two snicker bars,a pk of Marlboro lights & a Mt Dew whenever i started a new book. I was in heaven. I broke my ritual while reading THE STAND. I would have the book laying open in my lap while driving to work so I could read a few lines at stop lights. I cried when I got the news about his accident. The person that told me wasn't sure if he survived. I wasn't upset because of the loss of his work. I feel he's a part of my life. Not many ppl in my life have brought as much joy. Sad, maybe but true. LONG LIVE THE KING.

I remember reading the story about Pittsburgh in high school. I lived in GA at the time, but I'm from Pitt. I was like OMG I ATE AT A RESTAURANT THAT STEPHEN KING ATE AT!!!!
To this day King is the still the best with Character. I've never read another author whose characters spring off the page like his. I just love his characters. I don't always love his plots, but he will always have vibrant, well written, interesting characters.
My very first novel was "Gone with the Wind" in sixth grade. Hey, my mom read Harlequin novels. But my second novel was called "The Long Walk" by Richard Bachman and I fell in love instantly. That instance changed my need for literary input. My first Stephen King book was "Pet Semetary," because I love animals and horror, but that turned me into a Stephen King librarian. Imagine my surprise when I realized this author was the same as my first horror novel. Yes, I was elated. Now I'm a writer!
I could listen to his stories all day! He once said he isn't a good talker but I have to disagree. He is so engaging and funny. The more I find out about him the more I like him. He is someone I would enjoy chatting with without feeling intimidated by his fame. He is just nice guy with a passion for writing. I hope I will be able to meet him one day.
One day many many years ago, I turned on the book tv channel for the hell of it. I thought what a stupid boring channel nothing and no one on here for me. Just as I turned it on Stephen King took stage, and blew me away. It was the best hour program I've seen in a long time, funny, bold, warm, intellect, down to earth all in one. He was my greatest inspiration and best freind for that hour. Thanx to technologies I don't have to be there at the right time, I can do this anytime.
About 6 years old, mom left me home alone to go to a bonfire on the James River (it was literally just our front yard away, so no biggie really) The Shining was on TV that night. I've never fully recovered.

A lot of people have said the host is really annoying and yes, he is very annoying BUT Stephen King is saying things he wouldn't have said otherwise (with a non-annoying host). Stephen has a fantastic sense of humour, I'd doubt we would have seen much of that humour or happy jolly behaviour with a non-annoying host, In this interview you see him jumping out of his seat, giving high-fives to the host and laughing and even shouting, he is having a hell of a time in this interview and he has obviously known Andre Dubus (the host) for years. So although the host is really really annoying, it's kind of a good thing too.

I love this man. I feel like I know him after spending so many hrs in his brain. I was a single,19yr old mother. I'd eat bologna sandwiches for weeks to save up to buy his books. I'v been a constant reader since 1985. I've turned many ppl on to his work which caused my little sister & I to get into many fights over who the book belonged to. (Me!) P.S. My daughter was born in 87. I remembered how he referred to CARRIE as his first baby. I named my daughter Carrie.
I was born the year Carrie was published. (1974). I started reading him when I was 11 or 12. I know it’s a one sided relationship but he helped me through so much in my life. I feel I know him. Yes, I have a shrine in my house with ALL of his books. I have started to collect 1st editions of my favorites. Oh to have a signed copy that I didn’t have to buy on eBay. Steve, I hope you see this. I had an English teacher in 1985 or 6. She said you have to do the required reading, but you can pick any book. I said "ANY book?" She said yes. So I checked out Thinner and Pet Sematary. Own every book in hardback since then. Starting with It. True. Love your voice.
Man I love this guys books so much I don’t know if life would be worth it if I wasn’t reading his books.Everyone wants to say something to someone that they have watched, seen etc. but I am so thankful for S.K when he leaves this world no one will ever be like him the movies/books/ screenplays we are living with a living legend who’s books will keep him eternal.

I have read or heard everything he writes. I loved the sad stories and the spooky ones. But my faves are the sci-fi stories that he tells so well. These days with my eyesight not so good Audible books are here. But I still have my 1984 hard cover book of THE STAND. I love it when he reads. It is the time you get to hear King-isms!
Cujo is the only book that gave me a nightmare. I was only five pages in and fell asleep. I blamed Cujo. The one that tears my heart out and makes my soul bleed is Duma Key. I read it at least once a year and I've gone through two hard covers and a paperback. There is no logic behind this but I'm in tears in the first chapter. The man is legend.

When you start dont get frustrated. There is a lot of information in some of the books and they take a while to get going but so worth it. Start with the short story compilations skeleton crew is one of my favorites, the story about the monkey toy really got me as a kid lol. Word processor of the gods was fantastic. There are mid size books like rose madder, the eyes of the dragon is amazing fantasy novel. Liseys story, from a buick 8 etc. good reading :)
I Love it. A strong language warning before Stephen King! If you have read him you already know! Even his commentaries are laced with youthful fun! Besides I grew up in an Irish household. If you weren't saying feck you were thinking it! 😋
I think a lot of people feel this way before they read anything he writes. He’s got that reputation of being a horror writer. But he’s also written things you would not consider horror. And his talent for writing characters is unsurpassed! I believe that’s what keeps people coming back.
Stephen King, and his wife, have to be congratulated for donating his fee, and the auction items, toward scholarships, an incredibly important action to take on behalf of those without the means to attend the college, it's this kind of generosity and consideration that we need to see far more of from those with more wealth than they could spend in 10 lifetimes, after all "With great wealth comes great responsibility" (and for the pedants wealth is power)
For years I've read the Dubus name and had some respect for it. After watching both the UM Lowell events I have to say: Dubus is a complete and total ass. His interjections, stupid jokes, interruptions, and "yeUH!"s as he clapped over half the guest's commets were nearly enough to shut the thing down. Luckily, Mr. King is always worth listening to no matter how thick the idiots around him are. I'd love to see a "host" meet his maker King style in the master's next novel...just for giggles.

King is actually really fucking funny. I'm reading The Stand right now, and there was a part in the beginning of Chapter 8 that made me laugh so hard I had to put the book down to get the giggles out. No, I don't think that laughter's forced.

UA-cam is unique in that it's a great tool if you use it properly. There's not much benefit to things like Facebook or Twitter.
I'd really recommend On Writing. Totally changed the way I looked at the language in books.
That book was a lifesaver for me. It informed my writing just as much as Alan Moore did.
I love On Writing. It reads so well for a writing book and his memoir is amazing!
I'm rereading it now. I also recommend Writing Into The Dark by Dean Wesley Smith.

I have read steven king since I was 8 yrs old my favorite author I am 46yrs old and still love him I own almost every book he has ever written

That instance changed my need for literary input. My first Stephen King book was "Pet Semetary," because I love animals and horror, but that turned me into a Stephen King librarian. Imagine my surprise when I realized this author was the same as my first horror novel. Yes, I was elated. Now I'm a writer!

Gee, Stephen King is a nice guy so gracious and kind.
I could listen to his stories all day! He once said he isn't a good talker but I have to disagree. He is so engaging and funny. The more I find out about him the more I like him. He is someone I would enjoy chatting with without feeling intimidated by his fame. He is just nice guy with a passion for writing. I hope I will be able to meet him one day.
One day many many years ago, I turned on the book tv channel for the hell of it. I thought what a stupid boring channel nothing and no one on here for me. Just as I turned it on Stephen King took stage, and blew me away. It was the best hour program I've seen in a long time, funny, bold, warm, intellect, down to earth all in one. He was my greatest inspiration and best freind for that hour. Thanx to technologies I don't have to be there at the right time, I can do this anytime.

About 6 years old, mom left me home alone to go to a bonfire on the James River (it was literally just our front yard away, so no biggie really) The Shining was on TV that night. I've never fully recovered.
I am born and raised in Maine and this man inspired my love for reading. I am so proud of this.

A lot of people have said the host is really annoying and yes, he is very annoying BUT Stephen King is saying things he wouldn't have said otherwise (with a non-annoying host). Stephen has a fantastic sense of humour, I'd doubt we would have seen much of that humour or happy jolly behaviour with a non-annoying host, In this interview you see him jumping out of his seat, giving high-fives to the host and laughing and even shouting, he is having a hell of a time in this interview and he has obviously known Andre Dubus (the host) for years. So although the host is really really annoying, it's kind of a good thing too.
Stephen quit drugs but he didn't quit people who do them. That host is a coked up douchebag - I was this close to not finishing the talk after the first few minutes LET'S CLAP LET'S CLAP LET'S CLAP YEAH GREAT GUY COME ON CLAP CLAP HAHAHAHA

I love this man. I feel like I know him after spending so many hrs in his brain. I was a single,19yr old mother. I'd eat bologna sandwiches for weeks to save up to buy his books. I'v been a constant reader since 1985. I've turned many ppl on to his work which caused my little sister & I to get into many fights over who

P.S. My daughter was born in 87. I remembered how he referred to CARRIE as his first baby. I named my daughter Carrie.
I was born the year Carrie was published. (1974). I started reading him when I was 11 or 12. I know it’s a one sided relationship but he helped me through so much in my life. I feel I know him. Yes, I have a shrine in my house with ALL of his books. I have started to collect 1st editions of my favorites. Oh to have a signed copy that I didn’t have to buy on eBay. They are signed for other people. ❤❤❤❤
My first book of his was The Dead Zone when I was 13, and I've been hooked ever since.

Mine was Misery. I was a little older for reading King for the first time, or at least compared to everyone else I have met. I was 15, but I was still terrified. I adored it.

i love to hear Stephen talk about his writing, but this interviewer is hands down the most tone deaf and disconnected pretender I have seen him speak with. And yet there is still so much to hear and appreciate.

Man I love this guys books so much I don’t know if life would be worth it if I wasn’t reading his books.Everyone wants to say something to someone that they have watched, seen etc. but I am so thankful for S.K when he leaves this world no one will ever be like him the movies/books/ screenplays we are living with a living legend who’s books will keep him eternal.
Oh the memories that King brings back!! I started It at 18 but had to put it down for about 20 years. It was worth the wait!
Stephen King has a wonderful mind, and the greatest imagination of any writer who ever lived. I would marry him just to be able to sit and talk and share ideas.

I have read or heard everything he writes. I loved the sad stories and the spooky ones. But my faves are the sci-fi stories that he tells so well. These days with my eyesight not so good Audible books are here. But I still have my 1984 hard cover book of THE STAND. I love it when he reads. It is the time you get to hear King-isms!

Cujo is the only book that gave me a nightmare. I was only five pages in and fell asleep. I blamed Cujo.
The one that tears my heart out and makes my soul bleed is Duma Key. I read it at least once a year and I've gone through two hard covers and a paperback. There is no logic behind this but I'm in tears in the first chapter.

I've loved his stories via movies for years.... Sorry to say never read his books :( , I've never been a huge reader.... But recently I've gotten in to reading and after watching this , I have no doubt I will b reading his books :))
Start with The Shining and It.
Carrie's short, and he has plenty of short stories to get you started.
When you start dont get frustrated. There is a lot of information in some of the books and they take a while to get going but so worth it. Start with the short story compilations skeleton crew is one of my favorites, the story about the monkey toy really got me as a kid lol. Word processor of the gods was fantastic. There are mid size books like rose madder, the eyes of the dragon is amazing fantasy novel. Liseys story, from a buick 8 etc. good reading :)

I seriously used to think I was too good to read King. Now he's my favorite.
I think a lot of people feel this way before they read anything he writes. He’s got that reputation of being a horror writer. But he’s also written things you would not consider horror. And his talent for writing characters is unsurpassed! I believe that’s what keeps people coming back.

Stephen King, and his wife, have to be congratulated for donating his fee, and the auction items, toward scholarships, an incredibly important action to take on behalf of those without the means to attend the college, it's this kind of generosity and consideration that we need to see far more of from those with more wealth than they could spend in 10 lifetimes, after all "With great wealth comes great responsibility" (and for the pedants wealth is power)

For years I've read the Dubus name and had some respect for it. After watching both the UM Lowell events I have to say: Dubus is a complete and total ass. His interjections, stupid jokes, interruptions, and "yeUH!"s as he clapped over half the guest's commets were nearly enough to shut the thing down. Luckily, Mr. King is always worth listening to no matter how thick the idiots around him are. I'd love to see a "host" meet his maker King style in the master's next novel...just for giggles.

King is actually really fucking funny. I'm reading The Stand right now, and there was a part in the beginning of Chapter 8 that made me laugh so hard I had to put the book down to get the giggles out. No, I don't think that laughter's forced.
