      Hi Ryan. Thanks for answering. I am not a lawyer but I think you are not lying with your title. You dislike the Gibson line because it is good. But when reading the title you make people assume that you don't like the product. You might do generate this wrong expectation intentionally, to get more views, because this is what content creators learned over the last years seems to work. Like naming it "5 reasons why Gibson 2019 line is great" or so. I am subscribed to your channel since some time and might have watched this video anyway with a more encouraging title that relates to the properties of the product. Sorry for the long text, which is too long for a short attention span. Also sorry for typos and similar stuff, I am not a native speaker but beeing trapped seems to be the right term. So anyway thanks for the nice quality content.

    folks will tell you that they buy Gibson for the tone and quality. I'm callin' em on a reality check. Take ANY new Gibson and sand off the logo. It is the same musical instrument, same tone, same quality. Now hang it in a store and see what some one will pay. the difference is what folks will pay for a Logo.
    Gibson makes nice 900 dollar guitars. They give gobs of em away to influential players that are in the public eye. They then add that cost and charge other folks that 900 bucks making theirs cost 1800 bucks. That is how it works, whether, guitars, skateboards, purses or watches. (that Gibby bus and Mobile show room probably add a couple hundred on the price too)
    It takes a rare guy to not give a damn about what folks think. We are all WEAK and seek other's approval. Take a Squier up on stage and realize, "why do I care what folks in this bar think" heck they are paying 5 bucks for 50 cents worth of alchohol, they obviously have their own problems..do I really care?
    Deep down we know if we buy a Suhr or Warrior or Collins, our stupid friends won't recognize the logo and won't ooooh and ahhhhh, and deep down we are afraid they will NEVER ooh and ahh over our playing skills. fancy guitars are a security blanket for friends approval.
    in the long run it is cheaper to get rid of those kinds of friends, buy cheap, beer, lots of squiers and epis and fish with a sub 100 dollar fly rod.

      My comment was simply a way to avoid the $3K+ for the Traditional but I did have an Epi LP PlusTop Pro...for 28 days before returning it. It didnt help that Guitar Center was as close to useless as they could have been but the Epi was nice and had nice Pups...and looked nice...but needed a complete fret-leveling. I wanted to be someone who could say that the Epi is just as good as a Gibson, but I just cant. I got an '18 Studio and its just better out of the box. I know you can sink as much into, in my case, $600 Faux-Paul, as you want to make it better...but I didnt feel like it. The weak pots on the controls, a complete fret leveling, an actual set up, which GC just didnt seem to want to provide, a good nut (the plastic stock one is trash), the input jack is most likely low quality, and new locking tuners...at the least, would be necessary to make it a better guitar. If the Epi pups weren't what you wanted, they would need to be replaced as well.
      I wanted to be someone who could say they did everything with their Epi that others did with their Gibson, but I honestly can't do it. I'd choose my Gibson Studio over the Epi every time, now that I know the difference.

One who lots of guitarists would like to sound like, right? Or maybe it’s a guitar for people who like to have a more flexible guitar with more sounds or for a bit of experimentation? Or perhaps just buy it (and pay a premium over the Traditional) and don’t use the switching?

    • @ChandlerTV100
      @ChandlerTV100 6 років тому

      It's not that we can't get what they want, it's the fact that they're not listening to a word of what the consumer wants. The typical Gibson fan wants to get a simple Les Paul or ES or SG in whatever color they want. They're doing the opposite of that, they're making insanely more technical guitars (branded as the STANDARD LES PAUL) and taking away colors. Compare the 2016 line (which was just about perfect) to what we have now. It's 100% fine that they're experimenting, what the problem is is that they're making those guitars the face of the company, and no one wants them. Make the Standard what we want, a simple Les Paul with modern conveniences in a decent array of colors (compared to the 2 on the Standard), and put the crazy experimental modern stuff in the High Power line.

    • @davidburke2132
      @davidburke2132 6 років тому +1

      ChandlerTV100 Oh yes... I absolutely remember everyone singing the praises of the 2016 line up! Lol.
      To be fair one of the recurring criticisms (and one of the fairest in my view) of the last few years of the Gibson line up has been the huge numbers of colours for each model and the way those colours would be changed fundamentally every single year. Bear in mind that if a manufacturer has to make a model in so many different colours they are increasing production costs overall and running higher risks of stock sitting in stores unsold (which absolutely has happened these past few years to a large extent on some colours and leads to retailers having to discount at end of year - great for us, bad for retailers and the manufacturer).
      So, this year Gibson have rationalised this. Good for them. The US factory range is not a custom shop facility. It’s not reasonable for buyers to expect to have every guitar available in exactly our colour preference! We should be able to buy a guitar in a colour we like. And looking at the 2019 range guess what we have? We have traditionally spec’d Les Paul Traditional in heritage cherry sunburst and tobacco burst... we have more forward-looking and experimental Les Paul Standard coming back in blueberry burst (a super popular colour from 2 years ago)... we have Les Paul Classic in goldtop and honeyburst... we have SG Standard in cherry or black...
      So... hardly an assortment of crazy colour choices there then. If you want your own crazy or custom paint finish on a Gibson feel free to go to the Custom Shop and have it made for you... don’t expect Gibson on their production line instruments to give you a multitude of options and as a result negatively impact their business and competitiveness as they have done in the past.
      Oh, and by the way, what’s crazily experimental in the 2019 range compared with the 2016 one? The addition of dip switches on the Les Paul Standard? The 2016 Standard T already had the push-pull switching on all 4 pots. Set the dip switches a certain way and the 2018 Les Paul Standard has exactly the same functionality. The 2018 Les Paul Traditional is actually now more traditional and less experimental than back in 2016... back then it had “traditional weight relief” (a total oxymoron by the way) and now it’s back to having none, so it’s a great choice for those wanting a Les Paul built the way they always were. Look properly at the 2019 range as a whole and there’s nothing crazily experimental about it, particularly not in comparison with the 2016 range that you seemed to think was so perfect.

And, you never mentioned the very affordable price of $800. Why didn’t you mention the LP with the physics professor explaining the over 500 combinations of tones, push pulls, circuit boards, etc. I thought the special was the shining light of the line-up. The pick-guard and the new routing was a good topic though. Certainly worthy of a conversation, but not as much as a deal breaker as long as it delivered the sound we would expect from a solid body and a P-90. Not a bad move in my opinion. For whatever it’s worth, that is. It’s priced right, and full of all the things I go for.....simplicity. Thanks!

  • @donnyhall2535
    @donnyhall2535 4 роки тому

    Actually the Les Paul juniors DC tribute has clean pickup routes. And is routers for 2 pickups and will fit hummbuckers. I think a different pick guard style would have been better. Maybe a modified batwing. It would have been staying true to the Gibson styling. But it happened this way. Not sure how they see it as cost effective to do a top route. It takes more time and retooling to make it happen. So not real effective. But the routes for the pickups themselves makes it a more versatile instrument. You can buy a pick guard and put whatever pickups you want in it. And basically just swap it out. I do think they should have put an intonatable bridge on it. The wrap lightning bar tailpiece isn't real great. It's close. But not quite there. And the neck should have been mahogany, not maple.

    Saw a video of a guy hating on the standard having the Jimmy Page style push/pull pots. Said the standard should be exactly how the standards were in the late 50s. He even acknowledged the traditional being that. It was like he just wanted to complain for the sake of complaining. It was sad.

    I have to respectfully disagree Ryan. I think it looks very retro funky cool. Kind of like the Pawn Shop series from Fender. Also I like the strap button placement, much better spot than the back of the guitar. If I didn’t already own a Les Paul Junior DC copy I would think about picking this one up. However one complaint, No TV Yellow. Come on Gibson that’s one of your coolest colors!

    The thing I've seen people complain about is for one the prices....
    But the main thing is that the new Les Paul standard has alot of complex wiring dip systems coil split etc making it difficult to swap.oug pick ups or a major ass ache.
    So no dude it's not just the shapes...... It's much more than that

    I think we should be furious over the fact that they still haven't brought back the blanket cover in the hard cases. You know, that flappy thing that sometimes got in the way when you closed the case. It was bad enough when they changed from the soft poodle-fur blanket to the satiny one, but come on Gibson, bring back that somewhat useful/somewhat annoying blanket.

    The nice thing about Gibson is they have already given us a lifetime of things to make fun of. I get all misty eyed when I look at my Firebird X and the Les Paul studio monitors sitting on my desk and all the other misfit Gibson products.

  • @mishunny

    I've been reading comments through all the years stating that Gibson should just keep doing what they do right, and people want: classic looking guitars with classic designs (LP, SG's and ES) that always are on demand. MAYBE that's what they're trying, but some innovations will come, or should, but also the LP's some unique finishes.
    Now, about the LP Jr... I love Jrs, I always have but yeah, I agree with Ryan here. That's quite an odd design, for me at least. I like the price point, that's the price standard Junior's should sell for in my opinion. Maybe a different pickguard design... I don't know.
    But this is just a nobody's point of view.

    Regarding the junior double cut: I love the look of that pickguard. Though I might skip it if I found one today because I do think I need a more traditional TV Yellow and the more traditional drip looking pickguard. Put I love this particular 2019 one.

  • @submissivelover

    Yeah, it's likely is easier and cheaper to build, i don't mind that, Gibson needs all the help they can get.
    It's stripped down, basic, and simple. One P-90, One Volume and One Tone. I'm not a Gibson fan at all but i do think it's an attractive guitar, just plug it in and rock the fuck out. I Respect it, they listened.

    I'm not sure 'way less guitars' really matters all that much; I'd rather they offer 10 high quality models vs. 100 unnecessary/crappy ones. I keep thinking they should take a page from boutique luthiers (i.e. Collings) and offer broad customization options and get away from the 'lifestyle' brand direction they were headed in.

    What's even worse about that so-called jr is that they're taking the piss with the price.

    My dog just cut one, again. I don't like that pick guard either. The 2020 is little better because they moved the jack to the side, but then of course they jacked up the price, again. Gibson's price hikes are about as inevitable and unwelcome as my dog's flatulence.

    they changed the pickguard to save money. Corner cutting just like always. You can pre-assemble it and drop it in later, and it means less sanding and hand work.
    The name "Les Paul Standard" doesn't appear to mean anything in particular any more, and now it seems they've tilted right around and are chasing PRS' cues even though 20 years ago it was PRS being accused of chasing them.

    Good Gibson’s are a big investment.
    And worth saving up for.
    My advice to the youth would be to start with a few cheap gitters and try to establish a sense of what you like and then sell all the garbage at once and buy one pricey version of your favourite. And then play it hard and frequently.

    No one on these videos has noticed that Gibson are coping yamaha. I owe the Revstar rs720b. A fine guitar, at a very very decent price. Gibson are over priced. Revstar are a SG shape, jumbo frets, push pull pots. They came out in 2016. The full sound sounds more Gibson than a Gibson. The strat sound is more gretsch. They play amazing. No set up needed. A 500 pound guitar that's a million dollars
