When Hoffa was first released, his daughter (now a retired circuit court judge) appeared on the Today Show, and she said the movie was accurate. The actor who played Bobby Kennedy was also in the movie Rising Sun and the short-lived TV show Nothing Sacred.
as Roger talked about Chaplin, saying it should have been more about the movie making. i just kept thinking of "Singin In The Rain" and how much i love that films portrayal of that eras studio system and how interesting it was and i have to agree with him that i think that would have been a better more interesting film than Chaplin chasing women at parties and so on.
*CHAPLIN* was one of my favorite film of 1992. RDJ was amazing in his unreal performance. I still say to this day. He should have won the Oscar. If he did win I know for sure that he would not have even went back to drugs PERIOD!!!
Hoffa was a fantastic biopic that really shows the corruption of the labor union and how one man thought he was untouchable see his end. On the opposite side Chaplin is a very polished Hollywood approved bio pic that finds trouble balancing the visionary genius with that of the troubled womanizer with questionable morals. Fantastic performance by Downey Jr. but that script needed work or possibly an overhaul removing the personal life and focusing more on the creator and Hollywood moviemaking of the silent era which I found to be the most fascinating portion of the film, or his fight with the FBI over his works political affiliation and public image that would ultimately lead to his deportation from the US. All of these aspects work well as 3 films, but one? Chaplin just feels bloated as a result.
Siskel is dead on about Nolte's embarrassing accent, which is the film's biggest flaw. Outside of that, this is an extraordinary and emotionally powerful film.
I completely disagree with you and Mr. Siskel. Yes Nick Nolte was an unconventional casting choice and I think he definitely rises to the challenge. I thought his accent was perfectly fine.
Lorenzo's Oil is brutal to watch and it starts with Nick Nolte, who is my view was always a lousy actor who for some reason people lauded as a great one without any evidence. Add an Italian accent and, just, ugh.
Peter's Friends - A "Big Chill"-lite film with British actresses and actors in a British setting. Appealing comedy. 👍 Chaplin, a glossy Hollywood tribute to the legendary star with Robert Downey, Jr. in a committed performance 👎 Hoffa - Jack Nicholson is awfully cast in this suspense-driven film about the life of Labour leader turned gangster 👍 Lorenzo's Oil - a formulaic film featuring Susan Sarandon in an engaging performance 👍
I’m shocked at Ebert’s dismissal of Chaplin.

I've seen Chaplin. It was like a biography turned movie, but Robert Downey, Jr. deservedly got an Oscar nomination.
And should have Won
@@MrBoyYankee I actually believe Denzel Washington should have won that year.
Superb performance in a "meh" movie
Ebert is dead on that the movie doesn't focus nearly enough on Chaplin's mkoviemaking.
I agree.

Do all actors who lose at the oscars go back to drugs?
Yea right cause that’s how addiction works…smh
Trespass. The movie starring two Bill's, two Ice's, and written by two Bob's.
Did Ebert describe Walter Hill as "a male action specialist"?

I like Peter's Friends.

Chaplin was definitely an un-even film but what a performance from Robert Downey Junior !
Jack was better performance.
@@ricogomez4020 You mean Hoffa? It was nothing special.

Chaplin was a totally forgettable movie. Chaplins movies are not.
Completely on computer ...
