Glad you are back posting videos! Not too far from you; based near Sutton-in-Ashfield.Assume you are Mansfield - Newark area as I recognise the roads in your videos.I purchased my R new in June 2014, spec is 5 door dsg in Lapiz blue with 18 Cadiz alloys, leather and factory sunroofAlso upgraded the infotainment screen to the 8 inch version. The best mpg that I have achieved is 40.1, this was in Eco mode travelling on the A50.It takes a lot of self control to achieve this mpg.Normal everyday mpg, is around the 28 mark. No issues with the exhaust tips.Only one noticeable stone chip on the car, on the front of the bonnet next to the VW badge. No issues with the alloys, keep checking them just in case they start corroding under the lacquer. Have noticed that the drivers seat is starting to degrade, keep finding small piles of foam underneath the seat. Have to agree with you regarding the Golf R being one (if not the best) cars on the market today. It does everything so well, from nipping down to Tesco, to having a blast on a twisty B road.Only negative is you get the Corsa boy racer brigade always wanting to race you.Must admit I am getting a bit too old for that! Regards,Mick
I have a 16 plate car myself it has under 10k miles on it. It's also Blue & 5 door. I absolutely love it they are just incredible.Effortless overtaking ability whenever you want it.
Thank you for a great series of videos on the Golf mk7 R, currently in the market for either the GTI perf or R and your videos have been far more helpful than the standard reviews that are from the motoring journalists on UA-cam.
Hi mate its entirely my pleasure. I will be driving a friends mk7.5 golf GTI in a couple of weekends time so that might be a video of interest to you! I suspect i'll enjoy it though as i quite enjoyed driving the new Polo GTI
" I was on the boss" - love your accent mate! Good to see/hear from you again. the golf r is undoubtedly one of the best all rounders available, for the money. I have still never driven a high-end automatic in spirited conditions, lots of cornering etc... the only ones I've driven always let me down with uncommanded gear changes ruining my momentum/ weight shift. I know they have the ability these days and i can't wait to experience that. It is a hassle pissing about with a clutch and gear stick in heavy traffic, that is a given.
Thankyou mate I'm glad your enjoying your r. It's just a brilliant piece of kit and unless you buy something special after it I reckon youl have a hole in your heart where the golf r used to be lol
You sound like you're in a good position though mate. Oz. Golf r coming. A nice Shiela too? lol Nottingham is a great city and I always enjoying visiting the place. I was born here but bred all over a bit like a gypsy lol
I’ve owned an Audi A6 S line 2.0tdi, had it for the last 8 years and I love driving it. It got 106K on the clock but still drives like the day I bought it. My wife’s MK 6 Golf Match was written off just over 4 months by a “boy racer”(19 years old) in Tesco’s car park. 3 weeks ago we bought a MK 7 Golf GT TDI DSG and it a great car. To be honest I like driving it more than my A6 as it quite, smooth and very quick it you want it to be. When my A6 dose go I’ll be replacing it with a MK7-7.5 GT or R Line Golf. For and all round car that’s got everything the Golf dose take some beating.
Thankyou mate i know BMW's are epic but they are also a lot heavier on the wallet to buy and i think a lot of people (including myself) get carried away forget that when we start comparing cars.
Jay Kay hands down right mate! When it comes to hot hatches, the golf r (in my opinion) beats all of them, including the m135i, focus rs and the s3 All of them have different flaws, like the 6 cylinder running costs or the absurd price (focus rs) and the s3 to me, is a tad boring, but that's my opinion anyway haha
Jay, Sounds good to me. I to have lined up a test drive in the new Honda Type R when we are back from our Italian tour, in just over two weeks. So that will be fun - one they have in the showroom looks and that's one allocated for test drives. btmail.bt.com/cp/applink/mail/Downloader?dhid=attachmentDownloader&messageId=29237&accountName=DefaultMailAccount&folderPath=INBOX&contentDisposition=attachment&attachmentIndex=3&contentSeed=36d35&pct=d52d5&u=keith.morris06&d=btinternet.com&t=d93d5 btmail.bt.com/cp/applink/mail/Downloader?dhid=attachmentDownloader&messageId=29237&accountName=DefaultMailAccount&folderPath=INBOX&contentDisposition=attachment&attachmentIndex=4&contentSeed=d100d&pct=122d1&u=keith.morris06&d=btinternet.com&t=d93d5
Sounds good Jay ,look forward to that. I'm test driving this in the next couple of weeks. Sorry ,it was mailed to me ,so that's probably the issue. New Honda Type R GT in metallic grey, looks brilliant . -being registered on the 1st Sept ,will be driving about 2 weeks later. Bit too much in your face for me really but should be great fun and an interesting comparison to the R mk7.
Italian tour sounds awesome! Are you visiting the Ferrari factory?? I tried clicking on the link but it doesnt work for me mate. I think il try and test drive the type r this weekend when im back in north yorkie
Didnt realise you were a fellow trucker, the DSG is spot on. I love eco mode going to an from work. You've summed whats so good about the Golf R with DSG. I love mine ..... Might have to go to Wales in it now over the weekend.
No i was talking about being in pick up trucks and SUV's when i said truck mate. Defo do it, im in north yorkshire again this weekend so il be putting pressure on those posh cars with race mode for sure!
Jay Kay Sorry mate mistook you. Some nice roads up North Yorkshire. I ventured upto Harrogate other month but didn't know the roads too well. It's a great feeling making supercars work for it. Keep up the good work mate!
no problem mate so im guessing youre a HGV driver? My dad and older brother have their HGV's and im tempted to go for it just so i get the complete towing privileges on my license. Yeah it is a great feeling, i only wish i could film it but obviously not possible lol, i might do a video on the A59 though as it is a cracking bit of road, quite long too
BTW you asked about MPG and DSG issues:- MPG:- I average 28 (bad I know), but I do shortish journeys (10 miles tops to work, I do have access to a daily but end up in the golf by Friday) followed by a long blast at weekends (Wales, Cotswolds etc). DSG:- I too have had the DSG "hesitate" on me. I once went from 4th to 2nd going into a tight corner and it felt like it coasted around the corner for it to engage second on the exit (IE after the apex), so I couldnt acclerate through the corner. ( I hope that makes sense.)
Good to see you back! I was having to endure the Seb Delaney's and Miss Emma Walsh's of this world for my car related fix LOL. Its interesting your comparing the Golf and Honda quality of build materials. I had a 08 FN2 style Civic and that thing after 4 years looked very tatty with seats starting to wear and the chips on the front of the bonnet looked like it had been hit with a shotgun blast :( (BTW that Civic I would have very happily burned !)
Lol well hopefully i can get some more interesting content coming up. I really would love a drive in that 5 litre mustang... I saw one at a wedding i went to and it got a lot of attention from the female hotel guests!! Thats interesting about your old civic, mine is a 2005 type r. The interior isnt the best looking in the world but other than that everything is fine on. Cleaning wise i always neglected it too, never did two bucket method, never polished or waxed! So i'd love to know just how far back this chrome pitting problem goes! Are you still loving your VW?
Thanks JK loving it very much . I was nervous about getting one if the first of the new models into the country thinking it might have teething problems. But I need not have worried not a squeak or rattle after a year or warranty work. Only slight hassle has been the ad blu diesel additive. Plus the seats have a bit of lack of support ( has a seat massager though not in the R Line lol ) almost wished I had waited for the 250 bhp twin turbo R Line
Im glad to hear youre loving it mate. When i was last in VW getting my App connect sorted i sat in the V8 version and the seats were so comfy!! Are you keeping yours for a few years then or will you upgrade after 3/4 years?
lol actually have got a couple of friends who play instruments and one was a drummer in a rock/pop band... maybe we should add music. I was thinking that i should probably add some music, i just dont want to lose my no nonsense straight to the point style. I'll have a play though as music is a good dimension to the videos
You've got a DSG gearbox, in the dash menu you should be able to set what's called a 'coasting function', basically disengagement of the clutch / gearbox so you 'free ride' like when you approach a roundabout, traffic lights etc. Have you set it up it can improve the mpg by a few digits. Stops the automatic engine breaking effect.
Spot on again Jay! I'm a big fan of the DSG auto box. It also unlocks more features with the Golf with full ACC and engine / gearbox profiles. BTW - totally with you on the stone chips. I think VW paint must be really soft. Both my mk7 GTD and mk7.5 R have a nose scars from a stone chip where my Subaru is 16yrs old and hard as nails by comparison. Furthermore got a nasty stone chip on my GTD back wheel taking out part of the black paint - and they're diamond cut so a refurb is out of the question..... Best regards AJ
Hi mate, long time. Finally back. I had a drive in a brand new Honda Civic Type R 2 weeks ago at Honda Wolverhampton. Unbelievable car compared to the previous model. The road was damp on the day the car for a front wheel drive was unbelievable. I even was impressed with the interior build quality and was impressed with the looks from the outside. I have even spoke to BMW. Birmingham as know the head salesman who has to do me I can drive the M3 and 335d when I get better and have time to pop down. The only problem now is Audi's and other performance cars getting stolen lately. Especially round Birmingham and surrounding areas
Hello mate yes im finally back! Im gonna test drive the new type r but im not interested in buying it as its looks simply dont do it for me, but i do want to taste that power through FWD. Im driving the mk7.5 golf GTI too so it'll be interesting comparing the two. Youre right about cars being stolen, i was in Bradford in my Golf R a few months ago and was being followed, with a fiesta ST full of dodgy looking men trying to get my attention glaring at me. I ignored them and when i got home i read car jackings in Bradford, Manchester and Sheffield were up 16% during 2016!! So i avoid Bradford now when trying to get to Skipton. I even saw police interceptors a few weeks ago and a brand new Audi S3 was on the show for smashing into a Mercedes. The guys driving the audi got out and causually walke away, but it turned out it was a stolen car with no insurance!
Jay Kay I am so surprised that people out there are buying high performance expensive cars but not having a a tracker system or even a Autowatch Ghost or similar. If owned one that would be the first thing on my list. I wouldn't buy the type r for one reason not 4wd even tho it handled so well plus £32,000. Can pick up a decent performance car now for £20,000 with low miles. My wife got offered the 335d for £22,000 at work with 7k on clock and 16 plate. Where BMW Birmingham wanted £27, 000 for a similar model.
I know! I think my tracker system was £1500 for 5 years?? cant remember now but a small price to pay if it means your car is going to be secure! Infact all recovered vehicles are pretty much thanks to tracking devices which then lead the police to finding more cars which arent tracked. So the new type r is 32k?? Blimey cars are getting more and more expensive. The 335d at 22k is a very nice priced car! Buying nearly new is the way to go. I mean 7k miles is nothing really. What do you think you'll go for then, a BMW or Audi? I think BMW are the best at the moment tbh, certainly the M cars are fantastic. I still think the M2 is the best of the cars ive driven for the money even though the Cayman was brilliant
Jay Kay I would have bought the 335d or the Golf R as again could have gone for one £22,000 with 6k on clock and the fully loaded model. Got the money now but have to be careful as had to leave work to look after my mum who has been diagnosed with alzheimer's disease and getting bad plus my daughter is 14 months old so needed to look after her. Mrs has gone part time so need to be careful with spending at the moment. Otherwise was tempted to get one a couple of months ago. Will wait a bit now!
Got to agree with you. Great all rounder. Mines a 2015 DSG. Drive in city traffic a lot and the gearbox is great. Then out up to the Peak District in Race Mode. Never bother with the paddles as the auto in Sport is great. Best MPG on a run is 40 for me. I wish I had the dynamic chassis (comfort) option as the roads in Derby are bad and bumpy. The only problem I’ve had is the soundaktor which has developed a buzz and is going in tomorrow to be checked/fixed. Oh...and when it as really cold the other day my drivers side electric window failed but when the car warmed up it was ok.
Can't comment on the golf R but I have a regular 1.4 petrol golf and if I set cruise control to 60mph on a motorway my MPG will get into the high 50's! At 75mph on the motorway I'll get about 49-51 MPG. Fantastic engine that gives you diesel like economy if you go steady but has that punchy, responsive acceleration when required.
Hi Jay Kay, thanks for the super informative videos you've posted based on your Golf R ownership. This finally swung my decision to take the plunge a couple of months back and buy a 16 plate in white with 9000 mls on the clock. All I can say after a good few weeks driving is wow, I love this car. As you say, this must be the best all rounder around. It certainly feels sure footed whatever the road conditions. With regard to the mpg, I average 30 on my way to work and 33 on the way home with a mixture of town roads either side with a constant 60-65 in between. I have caned it on this route and ended up with 17 so it really depends on how you drive it. I leave mine in race auto mode mostly as I like the Suburu sountrack inside !!! I did however have a personal best of 38 mpg similar to you, but touched 39.9 on a return journey from Bedford to Cambridge last week. Well happy with that. One other thing, I only feed it super unleaded as I definitely notice an economy benefit, not enough to cover the extra cost but worthwhile for the cleaning properties I think. Agree on paint being shite, and soft. I also noticed small amount of bubbling on the silver trim along the bottom of the front bumper. That's pissed me off as VW say they won't cover it as its had some paintwork done either side of the numberplate. When I rang the dealer I bought it from they said they had a couple of stone chips sorted out !!! They told me to go back where I bought it from and get them to replace a clearly badly manufactured part!!!!!Typical VW trying to wriggle their way out, I've experienced this on my last 3 vw's.
it seems when it comes to warranty work they simply dont want to know. And considering we are paying a lot of money for these cars i believe they should pull their weight! Im thinking of approaching VW on their facebook and twitter page and making a social media issue of it. I might do a video and get everyone with bad experience to comment on the video and then take it from there!! Yes im on shell v power nitro plus now too. If i were driving it as a proper daily (say 200/300 miles a week) id have no problem using regular but because i only fill up once a month (sometimes less!) i stick the ferrari fuel in
Yes mate, they always seem a bit arrogant towards customers in my opinion. A Facebook mission to pretty much shame them seems fair to me. Like you said, we pay enough to own their cars. My wife drives a 16 reg Hyundai i10, its a cracking little car and to them, the customer is always right. We've only had one issue with it and they have a no quibble approach to their customers along with a far longer warranty period. P.s. I work in MK, about a quarter of a mile from VW head office. I almost drove there to show someone my bumper, along with the Vindis vw response!! ;) Cheers pal
Thanks for all of your honest and informative videos. Been really helpful for me as I was considering buying the new golf R 7.5. During my research I've seen a few websites online mention a new MK 8 Golf R due in 2019 with 350bhp as standard. How true any of that is I don't know. I think Auto Express was one of the sites I was looking at. I know these people can often be way off with their information so I'm a bit skeptical until further verification. They also claim the Golf GTI will have a standard output of 250bhp. I'm now seriously considering holding out til October to put in an order for the new MK 6 Polo GTI. It looks like it'll be a relative bargain as a pocket rocket to tide me over until the MK 8 Golf comes out. Having test driven the Golf R mk 7 I totally agree with all the praise it gets as a more refined and slightly more sensible all rounder. But I'm really looking forward too seeing what the new mk 8 will offer.
Hello mate. Yes i think i read about the Mk8 having over 350BHP. It is certainly possible because the Mk7 can reach between 355 and 375 BHP with a stage 1 remap which usually costs £1000 and simply changes the airflow/fuel mixture from what i can gather. Completely software based! I would expect the Golf GTI to be at least 300BHP in the next mk because i think the current type r is over 300BHP and is front wheel drive. I see it as being a competitor with the GTI. I have test driven the current (Mk 6) Polo GTI and found it to be a fun car to drive so it will be interesting to see what changes have been made with the next iteration.
That would be really interesting to see. I suspect it'll have a newly designed interior with a similar set up to the mk 6 Polo. I think that new streamlined and integrated dash shown at the motor show in Germany looks far nicer and even more practical. Trouble is, I wonder how much of an increase in price we'll be looking at and whether that will detract somewhat from the Golfs appeal as an all round bargain relative to some of it's competitors. It seems to me like a bit of an arms race that looks like pushing the Golf into the hyper hatch realm while raising the Polo into the arena of the old Golf. Either way I think it's all pretty exciting and looking good for the future.
you're right to wonder! A mate of mine said he specced the mk7.5 golf r how he'd like it (as he did with this mk 7) and the price was over £40k! He said that was ridiculous for a VW and bought a BMW instead, so yes it will be interesting to see how high VW will let the price go. I know the latest Audi RS prices have gone up. The RS3 is from 43k now (it was 40k when i looked back in 2016) and the new TT RS is from 50k... 50k for a TT!! I'd rather have the BMW M2 which is a couple of grand cheaper! Either way you should still get bargains if you go for nearly new or used
I think over 40k for a Golf just kills the whole appeal. That's nudging into hyper hatch and lower end prestige car money. You're right, you might just as well go for the Audi or BMW. Now if there is a significant price increase then I think used sales will be the place to look. A well specced low mileage mk7.5 might be on the cards in the future I think. Anyway, really enjoy your videos. They're so down to earth and honest with nothing held back. Just the sort of insight people need. Cheers.
Well youre certinaly spoilt for choice mate! Even now you can get a decent loaded 15 reg mk7 golf r for around the 20k mark! Thankyou mate i'll keep them coming :)
Just want to say well done on your videos mate (Y) I've enjoy watching them. Hopefully in the next month I'll be going to buy this car. Just not sure if to go for the manual or the DSG gearbox . Tough decisions haha
Thankyou mate and I know what you mean... First world problems! lol just test drive them both, VW dealers seem happy enough to let you do that, then decide from there
Jay Kay no problem. Keep up the good work. Your car is lush. I'm even thinking of having the same one as you for my first car. I liked nice sporty cars😊
If you've followed me this year you'll know ive driven some fantastic cars but they havent made me want to sell my R. This is the best car for the money without a doubt. When you get this car you will adore it mate! From a boring point of view, i came out the casino early Saturday morning in Nottingham after a good profitable 4 hours at roulette and as I left the car park it got no attention from the drunks outside the club who were blocking the exit! Where as my type r used to get things like people banging on the roof or knocking on the window and asking questions. So the understatement of the R really does work well when you want it to
Love these cars, really contemplating one myself, Arnold Clark have some cracking deals on these at the moment with 19" Pretoria's and some extras for £3000 deposit and £399 a month.
Hi from the US. I have a '15 R and have noticed the laggy gear changes. I think it's due to DSG logic and a lot of it can be mitigated. Were you on the throttle when you tried downshifting? I find that there's a latency in downshifts unless my foot is completely off the throttle because the TCU thinks that you're going to upshift, so it has to adjust accordingly. Upshift when on throttle (no need to take your foot off), downshift with foot completely off accelerator. I bought mine pre-owned with 38K miles and mine has a lot of pits from previous owner(s) probably driving on the highway. No way to prevent that unless you get Xpel PPF + Ceramic coating to protect the paint from chips, dings, scratches, UV exposure. My last car, a Subaru BRZ, was in a lot worse shape when I traded it in at 68K miles. Highway driving + construction vehicles = rock chips everywhere.
Hi mate yeah I was actually braking as I was coming to a tight left turn and I was braking aggressively so that should have told the system that I wanted high engine braking to support the brakes themselves. After this video I used the paddles for a while in race mode and everything was ok. Perhaps it's if you keep changing between eco mode and race mode it causes the system to get confused??
I was driving in eco mode for 1 year and i had to replace front tyres after that period....since then i have a set of new tyres and keep the car in Race mode only and almost no tyre wear after 2.5 years....so the 100$ i saved on fuel in Eco Mode i turned into a saving of 2400$ saving in Race Mode for not having new tyres every 12 month.....
Jay Kay was on the M62 and M621 motorways personal best on just normal roads is 37/38mpg in eco. I set the limiter as well because putting foot down you can't tell what speed your going 70 in a 30 lol
Yeah I know hem well. I use them when I head into Leeds! Yes I know mate I thought I'd done myself on the m1 turning off at chesterfield. Those smart motorway cameras are a pain! Floor it and you soon hit 70 and that's without launch
The only downside is the car changes up to 7th far to soon for my liking so if ur pottering along at 50mph limit(which a large number of A roads are up here in Scotland) and you touch the throttle it's jumping from 7th to 6th and back again, then if u bury it the box has to jump 4 cogs to 3rd and there's maybe a 1.5/2 second delay in doing this. Another plus though is the car pulls a lot harder when launching compared to my last one.
Hi mate thankyou. Yeah i can do, tbh they are small chips it just annoys me knowing they are there and i know precisely when they happened! They are hard to spot tbh otherwise lapiz blue is fine. Looks so beautiful in the sun light which is ironic because sunlight is bad for car paint lol
amorbavian i dont regret the lapiz blue, id do it again because although as you say it attracts dirt, keeping her reasonably clean and seeing her glisten in the sunlight makes it so worth while
I don't know to be honest. I was a cash buyer. It depends on how big a deposit youlut down to, the Rae of interest on the loan, the number of loan payments etc... you'd get that answer when you enquire at your retailer mate
You should use meguiars "next generation metal polish" as well as cleaning it leaves a protective coating on the surface. On my mk7.5 I am getting an average of 33mpg, that's a combination of town, b road blasts and motorway.
I'll give it a whirl but my car already has the nano paint protection film which is supposed to toughen the clear coat and offer life time protection. They arent bad chip marks, very small but even so its bloody annoyed me! Is you 7.5 broken in yet? You will get at least the same as me but i cant believe 47mpg or even early to mid 40's as ive certainly never achieved that
Jay Kay the next generation metal polish is for the exhaust tips. As for your protection, if it is a coating eg ceramic it will offer absolutely no protection against chips, but will offer protection against chemical contamination. If you want chip protection the only way is to have paint protection film fitted (PPF). Only done about 500 miles in the golf as I have a company vehicle so it only gets used at the weekends. I absolutely love it and couldn't be happier, although I am considering the plug and play "Racechip" as a small mod. An extra 60bhp for £500, and just unplug it when I have to go back to the dealer for services.
Yes your right, for some reason I never found the bmw interiors to be as nice as the VW’s and considering the M2, it’s a lot more of a drivers car than the golf R. By the way it’s been some time since you last uploaded?
I'm currently in Notts as well at uni. Nice city to live and drive in. Just wondering lol but what do you do for a living to be able to afford nice cars and such?
Hi mate, actually im not the highest earner in the world. But the things i enjoy in life are free or very cheap. The biggest expense for me is food because i love weight training so that is £50 a week. When i bought the R i was on £23k a year lol now im making £37k. So really its a case im lucky where i was happy with my type r (didnt feel the need to bu y anew car for 10 years!) and managed to live cheap with rent - either with girlfriends or with house share during my twenties. With lockdown im lucky so far where my income is still coming in from work. But i am now trying to increase my income as ive gotten myself into a serious relationship where i feel like i want to provide lol
I was very close to getting the Mk 7.5 Golf R (and the GTI Clubsport) but ended up with the S3 facelift. Pretty much the same car but I preferred the interior and virtual cockpit, I'd say its 1/10th off the Golf R for when you're having fun but I mostly drive in town anyway. Best MPG I've gotten with it is 44 MPG on the Motorway thanks to that massive 50 average speed before northampton.
i remember speaking to you a few months ago mate. Good to hear you finally got your hands on the S3 at the price you wanted! Thats pretty much what other S3 owners have told me. I havent actually tried averaging my speed at 50mph! I'll give that a whirl and see how that goes. im happy with 38.6 though as i do tend to enjoy the A59 in race mode and it is a fair stretch of road between Skipton and Harrogate
Yeah I ended up getting a great spec ex demo for a bit cheaper than a new one with discount. The dealer was garbage though but I'm happy with the car. I always drive the car in dynamic mode because its the best steering feel for me. Haven't tried Eco mode around town but dynamic gives me 25 MPG in city driving. The electronic steering is one thing I didn't like in these new cars. It's just easy with cruise control, keep it at 50mph and relax for that 20 mile stretch on M1 with the 50 speed limit. My car is actually in the garage already because I got hit by a pensioner in a Jaguar XF at a roundabout. Non fault claim and my insurance company have given me a Merc C300 Cabriolet as a replacement for a week.
oh no you're joking!! was there a lot of damage to your S3 then?? Whats the merc like as a car? I need to have a play in the facelift S3 and RS3. There is a brand new Audi TT RS that keeps smashing past my corner which sounds epic. I saw it can do 0 to 62 in UNDER 4 seconds... that is bonkers! lol
Not too much, only have to replace the front grill so its only in the garage for a week. Merc is alright but I do miss the S3. Merc gets a lot more attention though, especially with the top down. Fully electric seats are nice, something I think the £30k cars we got should have as standard. Infotainment system feels like its 5 years old but the postcode search is better than the S3. I'm actually thinking of going for an RS3 Saloon next, my local Audi called me saying they got it in. If they can do a good deal then I could get it sooner than I thought. Just stock they've been recorded as doing 0-60 in 3.7 seconds by Carwow. Only thing is they reduced the exhaust noise compared to the pre-facelift RS3. Its quieter than the TT RS too but still louder than our 4 cylinder cars.
That is interesting! What do you get attention from, mostly gold digger women?? Yeah i know, the Audi RS3 has been one of my fav Audis for a very long time and if it werent for the Golf R i'd have bought one without a doubt. The Audi i want to get my hands on now is the new R8... what a fantastic machine that is! I was driving to work in my Golf R and one over took me and it sounded fantastic!! £129k... imagine spending that on a car! lol
Hi bud, good vid,I agree wi u on the exhaust tips, there not the of best quality, I have owned 2 golf 7 r's both DSG, a 64 plate for 2 years and my new 7.5 purchased new in June. I have noticed a difference in fuel economy with the new one, am averaging 36 mpg and its never been in eco mode, the 64 plate averaged 31mpg, this is using the same fuel (shell v power) and the same route to work every day and driving normally,so the 7 speed box must be the difference. am gona try your tip about use sport auto mode for spirited driving, I normally just keep it in drive and use the paddles.
Hi mate cool video. I have tried the mk6 gti dsg and liked it however it wasn't blow you away sort of power. i have tried the mk7 gti manual and it felt slow both were stock. do you think it is worth trying the r if i am after lots of power. Btw i did prefer the drive of the dsg over the manual. thanks.
Cheers mate and yes! The Golf R a.) has lots of fantastic grip, b.) has great power delivery stock c.) has great tuning potential where stage 1 ecu remap gives you nearly 400bhp for something like £700! The tuning potential of the car itself if a reason its so popular. Ive seena few youtube videos of people taking the mk7 to like 600bhp
@@jaykay7932 I know, savage. That's with the Stop/Start function enabled. Thought I had a fuel leak when I first got the car! PS really enjoy your videos, they have helped me configure the car the way I want it. Thank you.
Had mine for 9 months. 28-29mpg. Driving in comfort mode mostly. Eco sucks as the pull is too delayed and also I don't see the mileage being that different from comfort mode. I do also have it in race mode now and then and I do drive a bit aggressively when possible. My commute is 100km daily and half is through heavy city traffic. That's why the mileage is low. But still ok for a 300hp car. Definitely the best all rounder. My biggest problem is the seating position. I have quite long legs and I feel the pedals and the resting plate are too close. So either I'm too far away for a nice arm position or too close for my legs to be comfortable.
see i really enjoy eco mode as its sort of like a total chillout period for me. As you could see in this video im driving in a city (ok not that busy for the moment) but im so relaxed and chilled that im not really holding the steering wheel at all lol. As for your long leg problem, i too have long legs but im 6ft 3 inches tall with 35 inch legs. I dont have a problem because all i hve done is pulled the steering wheel closer to me, have you done that and still getting problems? My feet are a UK size 11/12 (Euro 45)... how big are your feet? Maybe your a lot taller than me with bigger feet too. Life is pretty shit for taller guys where travel, cars and clothing are cncerned, i hate flying economy in the middle aisle too because i get pins and needles in my knees as the seats are too damn close, but have to pay extra for door seats or premium economy!!
Hey Jay I'm picking up a midnight blue dsg 16 plate on Saturday 16th Sept. I'm from Chesterfield be good to meet you compare cars and you could give me advice on my car.👍 Especially cleaning. You've done some good videos.
The exhaust tips pitting is a common problem. You have to be careful with over polishing them as overtime you will end up wearing the chrome plating (sucks, I know). Regular cleaning with glass cleaner is what is recommended (minus the polish), if you can keep up a super regular cleaning schedule (unrealistic for those of us who can't clean our car's everyday haha). I had one of my exhaust tips replaced at 6,000km through warranty. If your car is still under warranty, try and get VW to replace all 4 of them. Pain in the ass. Wish they came from factory as stainless steel!
It is a pain. I actually was going to try and claim from warranty 6months ago but all my friends told me I’d be Waisting my time! My R has still only done 5000miles so maybe worth a try. Thanks for the cleaning advice too
I did about 200 miles and got 40mpg in a manual in race mode. Around the peak district then down the motorway to Birmingham and back. Much better mpg than my 1.4 ibiza😂
We use ours as a daily its definitely the best value for money considering we got a nearly new and saved quite a bit. We have just got ours back today for some wheel scuffs and a pretty big stone chip near the exhaust and it looks brand new again. The dealer paid but it certainly doesn't cost much if it bothers you. Good to see you are still enjoying the car. We had to take it to Mercedes to have the work done and the dealer was trying to get us interested in an a45 Amg but don't like the looks tbh. As far as the interior, the focus rs is far worse than the golf r lol. I have noticed a slight squeak when going over speed bumps, sounds like it's coming from rear passenger side so will have to get it booked in. When did you get the car serviced mate, how many miles?
Im glad to hear you finally got your R back mate! I test drove the A45 AMG before i bought my R and i didnt like it. I sat in the car and felt out of place, where as in the Audi RS3 and Golf R both cars felt right for me and both cars made me laugh like a mad man on the twisties lol. Have you got any big road trips planned?
Jay Kay yeah mate the rs3 was on my radar but too pricey compared to the r. I've took it out but not too far yet. Planning on the lakes or Peak District at some point but the rain is terrible atm lol. When did you get your first service mate, how many miles would you recommend? We get the first 2 free so that's a bonus at least.
Yeah same for me the golf r feels pretty much the same as the RS3 to me. I had my car serviced at 3000 miles (which was 12 months to the day). Check your service schedule as for my R, the VW factory set me on the 24month service but my stealership "recommended" that i go in for a 12 month service lol. The first service cost me £143 so getting the first 2 free is excellent value!
Jay Kay Yeah mines the 12 month service, just asked as yours is very low mileage and hardly used so wouldn't have thought yours would have been due as some are flexible based on miles rather than months depending on driving habits. Good video mate look forward to more. Stay away from those casinos though lol evil places!
Manufacturers economy claims pub talk hah thats a good description. Very hard to replicate in real world driving regardless of make. One thing thing that really helps or gets close is a manual gearbox, modern autos including dsg and the ZF are just are not as efficient as claimed.
Normal mode get low 40s sport mode low 30s...had it a month, 30k miles when I got it paid £18k, like all hatch backs they lose money unless it’s a limited edition Ford RS
I’d say that is fair seeing as you are totally redesigning the interior of the car when you replace the seats, infotainment system and add the moon roof. Pointless IMO as all I care about is performance. Entirely subjective but I personally would go with a bmw or Audi if I cared about luxurious interior
I think after the fourth year they would’ve lost most of their money. I know I’ve seen some manual 15reg r’s for sale in the 17k mark which is a bargain If you don’t want dsg!
You will pay through the roof for all that as the extras are quite pricey if I'm right basic leather seats was £1700? For around 20-21k can get a 15/65 (upgraded turbo) bog standard golf r dsg in white black or blue with around 20k on the clock, red seems to be abit cheaper but not a fan on red Due to my budget I prob won't be able to get heated/leather seats but you can retrofit some of it If your like me looking at keeping the car long term and don't mind seats not vw factory standard there's a company in York who will fit same leather seats for 700quid with the r logo stiched in
thats pretty low! On a bad day of stop start traffic and bollocks road works i get 29mpg. What fuel are you using? Ive been using shell v power since i only fill my R maybe 6 times a year
@@jaykay7932 I use Bp ultimate. I'm from N.Ireland so the best we get is 97octane. The wife gets 35mpg going to work when she takes it. I get 20mpg going to work! 👍
Thankyou mate. The Scirocco is a tidy motor as well, we like them at the office as there used to be a guy who had one in the work car park (before i got my golf r) so we used to talk about it. 8% is a very good rate for a bank loan mate! I think the best rate i could get was 11.9%!
Yeah it all depends on your credit score i believe. It's going to be my first car (people think i'm crazy) but i don't care man haha! I want it for several years and then eventually get it remapped etc :)
well good on you mate, ignore everyone else and do what makes you feel happy. got a bit of stick for buying this golf r from some friends and my family but i dont care, id do it again in a heart beat lol. Life is too short to be sensible 100% of the time
ok, i have actually got a contact at JLR in the quality department who claims he can get me a 30% staff discount on any car i fancy... i might approach him to see if he can get me in contact with the company Marketing lot so i can get access to their cars and do it that way as the dealers are very stuck up where ive been
I’m not sure. When I bought my R a base model meant Manual and standard wheels. Not sure what they come with now but do know that as of November 16 the cut the price 20% and three in loads of extras before the 7.5 came out
Jay Kay in Australia a lot of the time they get there cars fully loaded with all the extras. It actually works out cheaper for them than it would be for us with the same spec.
The car is a total waste of money, it's now worth 23k? So you've lost over 7k in over a year?? Ridiculous, now that takes the biscuit as you would say 😂 also why buy a golf r if you aim for good MPG, pure stupidity.
Jay Kay let's not get bitchy about what I said, it's true, cars are a money pit, they lose you so much money rather than making you some, assets are where you want to invest. Even if I could afford to buy one I wouldn't cos I don't want to waste my hard earned money on it. Depreciation, insurance, fuel, maintenance then the newer model comes out and then it's looking it's age. You should put all your money into property, shares and precious metals. You'll end up working till your 80 if you carry on spunking 30k on a car.
No ones being bitchy but your comment was and is twattish. 'Also why buy a golf r if you aim for good mpg, pure stupidity'. That is a twattish comment that would get you swiped if you said that in person to someone mate. As for investing my money, whose to say I haven't got investments? Whose to say I haven't got gold with a scrap value of £20k? Whose to say I didn't get a huge pay rise this year? Whose to say my next car will be 30k? It might be 90 or 100k... if you can't afford this car then why insult people who can. At the end of the day people earn their money and spend it how they like. You have no right to try and belittle anyone who does and buys what they want! Yes this car is a depreciating asset but it's still money better spent than on drugs, booze and gambling! Will I buy another golf r? I probably will yes as it's an excellent daily driver which gives a lot of cars with a lot higher price tags a spanking
My intention wasn't to offend you, it was probably a bit of a blunt statement and I apologise. With you quibbling over mpg and driving around in eco I can confidently assume you're not the wealthiest of people. You care about what you spend, which is like me, I'm just trying to give you some good advice which will help you financially in the future. Besides all that I think you're very good at making videos and to be honest I think you'd do a better job on top gear than how Chris Evans performed.
I can afford it but I am a tight arse with money lol. But the mpg thing is mainly I get asked it an awful lot from people who are interested in buying the car, plus I genuinely do get a relaxing experience driving in eco mode and using the acc. The mpg target is more like a fun game for me too. I appreciate your advice but my money side of things is fine. I would not have bought his car if I couldn't afford to write off 30k. However I do get a lot of comments from people who appear to be tight on cash but tempted to buy an r. Perhaps I should do a video explaining that you should only spend money on a car if you are able to write off the money. But this is also what I'm trying to get through to people, these cars do lose money so be prepared for that. Anyway thanks for the compliment mate and I hope I wasn't harsh on you.
Hence the term ‘facelift’. It’s hardly a deal breaker when buying a car though unless your a tool imo. Had a play with the new infotainment in my friends new golf gti and I wasn’t bothered the slightest. All I care about is grip and performance. If all you care about is infotainment you’re buying the wrong car mate assuming ou can even afford this car
Don't get me wrong I'd love a golf r but I always think is it worth it when I don't need one? I live in a 300k house and don't own a car 😂 I use a works vehicle to work and my golf club is walking distance. Do I buy one just so iv got it or leave it cos basically I don't need a car? I think I realistically would clock up around a 1000 miles a year , would there be any point?
Good to see you back mate, love your videos!I purchased a Golf R because of your videos!I absolutely love it.
Thankyou mate I'm glad your enjoying your r. It's just a brilliant piece of kit and unless you buy something special after it I reckon youl have a hole in your heart where the golf r used to be lol
I'm from Nottingham mate
Really enjoyed seeing the sights again
I live in oz now and getting an R today
Keep up the good work 👌🏼
You sound like you're in a good position though mate.
Good To have you back Jay Kay, Coming from a diesel 4 Series, I wouldnt lie, i could most likely live with 33MPG!
Appriciate the Vid Bud!
Thankyou mate i know BMW's are epic but they are also a lot heavier on the wallet to buy and i think a lot of people (including myself) get carried away forget that when we start comparing cars.
Jay Kay hands down right mate! When it comes to hot hatches, the golf r (in my opinion) beats all of them, including the m135i, focus rs and the s3
All of them have different flaws, like the 6 cylinder running costs or the absurd price (focus rs) and the s3 to me, is a tad boring, but that's my opinion anyway haha
Mate it's good to have you back!!!! Was just going through your ep3 type r vids last night, looking forward to seeing you test drive the fk8 type r!
Thankyou mate its good to be back! I have literally just been in my Type R turning her over!
Good to have you back fella.
thanks mate! Now i have to make time to keep making new videos. I visit the casinos more now as well so thats another reason for the lack of time lol
Good to see your back Jay.
Thankyou mate! Lets hope i can build up some momentum and get some more videos out before the months end!
Jay,
Sounds good to me.
I to have lined up a test drive in the new Honda Type R when we are back from our Italian tour, in just over two weeks.
So that will be fun - one they have in the showroom looks and that's one allocated for test drives.

Hi Jay great to have you back great video thank you 😀👍
Thankyou mate. Good to be back!
Yeah it is a great feeling, i only wish i could film it but obviously not possible lol, i might do a video on the A59 though as it is a cracking bit of road, quite long too
Yer I got my class 1. It's a good craic once youre in somewhere that treats you well. Deffo do it for your b+e.
BTW you asked about MPG and DSG issues:-
MPG:- I average 28 (bad I know), but I do shortish journeys (10 miles tops to work, I do have access to a daily but end up in the golf by Friday) followed by a long blast at weekends (Wales, Cotswolds etc).
Automatically for me eco mode does this; disengages engine breaking so the car coasts
I've managed to get up to 41 mpg in Eco mode unbelievable for a car like this specially when I go into race best of both worlds 👌
Most I have ever seen is 42mpg. 7.5 DSG.
Best regards
AJ
Yeah certainly wait mate, cars are awesome but cash is king!
You are welcome mate. Its been my pleasure to make these videos and to give an honest opinion on this great car.
it seems when it comes to warranty work they simply dont want to know.
I almost drove there to show someone my bumper, along with the Vindis vw response!! ;)
Cheers pal
First world problems! lol just test drive them both, VW dealers seem happy enough to let you do that, then decide from there
Really good video. Keep up the good work man. 🖒
thankyou mate i appreciate the nice comment
So the understatement of the R really does work well when you want it to
Jay Kay yeah. It is soooooo nice. It sounds good too. Keep up the good work mate. I'll always be a subscriber
Love these cars, really contemplating one myself, Arnold Clark have some cracking deals on these at the moment with 19" Pretoria's and some extras for £3000 deposit and £399 a month.
do it mate you wont regret it but try and get even more out the dealer if you can
Hi from the US.
I've just bought a golf R MK7. Took a pic today I got 40.4mpg in eco mode
Is that manual or dsg?
Jay Kay DSG 15 plate
Good going! Still not beat my PB of 38.6
Jay Kay was on the M62 and M621 motorways personal best on just normal roads is 37/38mpg in eco.
Nice vid Jay...... any chance of a video of the Stone chips you mentioned... is lapiz blue that bad?
Hi mate thankyou. Yeah i can do, tbh they are small chips it just annoys me knowing they are there and i know precisely when they happened! They are hard to spot tbh otherwise lapiz blue is fine. Looks so beautiful in the sun light which is ironic because sunlight is bad for car paint lol
Jay Kay mine is blue as well and goddamn it attracts dirt. Worse than black. Otherwise it looks flawless when clean in sunlight.
amorbavian i dont regret the lapiz blue, id do it again because although as you say it attracts dirt, keeping her reasonably clean and seeing her glisten in the sunlight makes it so worth while
If u get this car on finance what would u be looking at approx monthly?
Mate, there is nothing wrong with that interior. It looks spot on.
yeah its alright im happy with it. Im eyeing the M2 competition now and i think the golf's interior might be better than the BMW's as well
Yes your right, for some reason I never found the bmw interiors to be as nice as the VW’s and considering the M2, it’s a lot more of a drivers car than the golf R. By the way it’s been some time since you last uploaded?
i know mate its because im playing black ops 4 a lot at the moment lol Ill do a video over the weekend as youre right im well overdue a video!
Jay Kay 😂😂
Thankyou mate. Yes the 7speed looks like it does make a difference then. How do the gear changes of this box compare with the mk7's?
On a fine day can you please do a fast country road drive using both sports auto and manual.
I get 18 mpg in my R estate in London mate 😂 still love it tho.
lol bloody hell! Stop start traffic! Out of curiosity do you use stop start?
Hey Jay
I'm picking up a midnight blue dsg 16 plate on Saturday 16th Sept.
I'm from Chesterfield be good to meet you compare cars and you could give me advice on my car.👍
Especially cleaning.
You've done some good videos.
Hello mate. Congrats on the purchase! Yes we could meet up. Message me your email and we'll sort it out mate
Much better mpg than my 1.4 ibiza😂
thats bloody good!! After i stopped fliming this i gave it some b road fun and got home with an average mpg of 30.1 which i thought was good going lol
Did you finance the Golf R, or buy it outright?
cash bought it for several reasons which il do a video on
We use ours as a daily its definitely the best value for money considering we got a nearly new and saved quite a bit.
You can absolutely get 40+ in the 7.5 If you can resist putting your foot down or keeping it in race mode. Easier said than done
Life doesn’t get much better than race mode
Good old Nottingham feels weird seeing it on a screen
Need to take it to revo get a dsg and engine stage 1 remap, that will get rid of the laggy gearbox up the bhp by 60 and increase the mpg
How do you get such good mpg?? Im averaging 27mpg and thats about 50/50 city/highway. Granted i like to put my foot down but not all that often
Just by using eco mode as I showed here mate. Are you on high octane fuel as well? Im currently using shell v power nitro plus
Manufacturers economy claims pub talk hah thats a good description. Very hard to replicate in real world driving regardless of make. One thing thing that really helps or gets close is a manual gearbox, modern autos including dsg and the ZF are just are not as efficient as claimed.
Nice car
Normal mode get low 40s sport mode low 30s...had it a month, 30k miles when I got it paid £18k, like all hatch backs they lose money unless it’s a limited edition Ford RS
The problem is, the desirable higher spec ones, pretoria alloys, full leather, pano roof, full nav, keyless go, are £30k+ on the USED market
I’d say that is fair seeing as you are totally redesigning the interior of the car when you replace the seats, infotainment system and add the moon roof. Pointless IMO as all I care about is performance. Entirely subjective but I personally would go with a bmw or Audi if I cared about luxurious interior
Fair enough,. Currently running an mk6 GT TSI, looking to upgrade to the 7.5 R in a couple years. Looks like they hold value pretty well!
I think after the fourth year they would’ve lost most of their money. I know I’ve seen some manual 15reg r’s for sale in the 17k mark which is a bargain If you don’t want dsg!
true. All about the DSG upshifts though!
You will pay through the roof for all that as the extras are quite pricey if I'm right basic leather seats was £1700?
For around 20-21k can get a 15/65 (upgraded turbo) bog standard golf r dsg in white black or blue with around 20k on the clock, red seems to be abit cheaper but not a fan on red
Due to my budget I prob won't be able to get heated/leather seats but you can retrofit some of it
If your like me looking at keeping the car long term and don't mind seats not vw factory standard there's a company in York who will fit same leather seats for 700quid with the r logo stiched in
About 50 miles per gallon in a 7.5 because of the extra gear
It’s good to know what can be achieved using it as a daily, thanks.
43mpg 50mph 6 gear motorway in a manual bud. I'm after a c63 coupe next but no dealers ever got any to test drive they say their like hot cakes
wow thats great!! Are you in the Mk7?? Yeah i know, mercs always sell fast but usually you can get a test drive in an approved used model
Jay Kay yeah mk7 mate
2016 DSG on 19"alloys. 26mpg average. That's 70% eco mode,30% race mode.
thats pretty low!
I'm currently getting 28mpg dsg on 19s. Probably the roads I used 😂
lol that was the mpg I was getting when mine was used just for weekends
Holy smoke. I am getting long term average of 24 after 4k miles in dsg 7.5. I can get a bit silly with the race mode though.
Gorgeous car, man! i wish i had that much money to just buy a car out right lol - I'm getting a bank loan (only 8% APR) to buy an VW Scirocco
Life is too short to be sensible 100% of the time
Exactly mate. Spot on! Life is 100% way too short. Appreciate it bud
please test drive the range rover please
which range rover mate? I tried to test drive the new SVR a few months back but they wouldnt let me film it
Autobiography, vogue any it would be a great video
ok, i have actually got a contact at JLR in the quality department who claims he can get me a 30% staff discount on any car i fancy... i might approach him to see if he can get me in contact with the company Marketing lot so i can get access to their cars and do it that way as the dealers are very stuck up where ive been
ex demo or nearly new 27k but 2014 3 year old with 30k miles on it and you can get them for around 20k
jamie gargett who would want a nearly new car with 27k on the clock???? 😂
Sean Walsh He meant it costs £27k
I'm buying the base model..what can that do ? Lol
I’m not sure. When I bought my R a base model meant Manual and standard wheels. Not sure what they come with now but do know that as of November 16 the cut the price 20% and three in loads of extras before the 7.5 came out
Ahh ok.. do you know if the base model with dsg, have the paddles behind the steering wheel ?
Vw golf r stock 7.5 model in Australia is around $65k lol what a joke. Mk7 around $55k plus on roads
So the mk7 works out £34,000!! Blimey it's cheaper in England! Have the Aussie government introduced some sort of tarrif tax on German cars??
Jay Kay in Australia a lot of the time they get there cars fully loaded with all the extras. It actually works out cheaper for them than it would be for us with the same spec.
The car is a total waste of money, it's now worth 23k? So you've lost over 7k in over a year?? Ridiculous, now that takes the biscuit as you would say 😂 also why buy a golf r if you aim for good MPG, pure stupidity.
Pretty twattish comment mate. Be interesting what sort of replies you get from people who can actually afford to buy this car 👍
Since the 7.5 came out the screen in the 7 looks so dated
Hence the term ‘facelift’. It’s hardly a deal breaker when buying a car though unless your a tool imo. Had a play with the new infotainment in my friends new golf gti and I wasn’t bothered the slightest. All I care about is grip and performance. If all you care about is infotainment you’re buying the wrong car mate assuming ou can even afford this car
Jay Kay sour grapes but to be fair id be more pissed off with missing out on the 7 speed dsg, the better cloth seats and extra hp.
Good old Shawn who can’t even afford a golf r yet spends two years commenting on my videos pretebding he’s deciding to buy or not 😂
Jay Kay you've missed me haven't you 😁
Don't get me wrong I'd love a golf r but I always think is it worth it when I don't need one? I live in a 300k house and don't own a car 😂 I use a works vehicle to work and my golf club is walking distance. Do I buy one just so iv got it or leave it cos basically I don't need a car? I think I realistically would clock up around a 1000 miles a year , would there be any point?
