Life is good tovarishch, except i got a bit stressed out on some "projects" i am helping with, trying to establish some kind of realistic depiction of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. as a roleplay at the moment. Just chill, relax and think about videos when your mind is clear about what to do and what not to do when you have freetime. It always makes life hard when you are fatigue and heated which makes you think like if you had a hangover. And keep up with the good work and good luck tovarishch!
No problem! At the time. My S.T.A.L.K.E.R. RP is in development and it is in closed beta, i couldn't afford too much people at the time but having more admins and lore master's would help. Question is, is it a bit too direct to friend you so i can tell you if it's ready or generally chatting. I won't leak it for sure.
Half Life 1 has a great atmosphere! The low poly graphics, fuzzy textures, lightning system, funny and low bit rate sound effects (I'm convinced that the tentacles are just cows and the vortigaunts are just a recording of somebody saying "DIE!" in a really raspy voice), even the lack thereof of background sounds in some areas other than walking sound effects or the crunching sound from the tentacles (as weird and specific of an example that is) makes this game really unique. And it is really creepy and melancholic to walk through abandoned, old maps. My favorites are the map with the hotels set in very early morning (I think it is called 4 am) and the futuristic map in the Scientist Hunt mod.
Alm these things were a product of its time, this game actually had insane graphics and ai for its time, yes the atmosphere is great but it's not because of low poly and fuzzy textures...
Actually, the AI itself does allow to try a stealthy approach (for example, enemies can't hear you if you're crouching etc.), it's just that most of the game isn't designed with stealth in mind.
I didn't know there was an 'alarm system' because I just assumed they were scripted events triggered like everything else in the game. It's not like a police siren goes off.
I've finished this game 5+ times and I've never ever noticed the stealth aspect of Xen. Never knew you could sneak past the Tentacles either. Matter of fact I never noticed many things about HL1 until I started watching Marphy's vids. I should play through it one more time with his videos as a guide to noticing the details.

Your Half Life Fact Series is truly a treat every time. No matter what gimmick you elaborate, it always makes the day. And I'm sure the blinking video will too.
Although I'm impressed by the whole addition of a stealth path in the level, you can really tell that they had been running out of development time at this point. The tentacles, especially, were very obviously not made for Xen. They still move up and down as if it was the rocket chamber, and sparks fly off when they hit stuff even if it's not metal. Plus, they just make footstep sounds when they hit the xen rocks. It's a shame that Xen had to be so rushed.
Definitely. Xen shows its signs of being half-baked rather badly. Visually it's pretty interesting and I like a lot of the world they've made of Xen. It's just a shame it's so unfun to play through.
The dirt footstep sounds when a Tentacle hits a surface here is intentional. Tentacles are defined by the mapper as to what sort of surface they "tap". In Blast Pit, they use the metal clang sound for the silo. In Surface Tension and throughout Xen, they use the dirt footstep sound for dirt. There's also a setting for tapping water, but this is not used in any of the games.
marph, in all seriousness, every time you make one of these you just always remind and reassure me why half life is my favorite videogame, thank you for that
Why do those Vortigaunts remain neutral? Are they tired of being slaves? Are they paying attention only to their work? Are they a different kind of Vortigaunt? Is it a bug?
Wow.... i played half time a bunch of times, and this "stealth" approach was the only one i always went throught, never knew about the main route you present first... good video and good work !
Stealth? Half Life? I did a video of stealth in Half Life too, I never knew about this :o I'm gonna try doing this, thank you for this wonderful video, hope Black Mesa has this feature too!
Didn't know the Vortis at the mines wouldn't shoot on sight. I actually tried to be stealthy in this part, spending a LOT of time trying to not get seen, and thought it worked. Lol.
I'm not sure who I'm more impressed by. Valve for thinking to put things like this in Half Life, or you for noticing them, and then going through the process of making videos about them. How do you find this stuff? Do you just go digging through the data files, and notice the alarms, and triggers, or are you really just that observant?
Finding these things can come about in a number of ways. Originally, my friend Barnz and I were looking up info on the piston machinery also seen in this video. This led him to identify the specifics of the alarm system in the courtyard. I looked further up to the alarm system in the later map and was able to piece together the intended stealth route meant for this section.
i didn't know about this on my first run through of hl1 but picked up on it as at that point i noticed that using the crossbow to kill stuff silently is a powerful tool, i even did this whole level without alerting anything besides the garg, its still interesting to see it dissected and i didn't even know about the alarm system, i just figured alerting the grunts triggered the spawns
"Ah yes, the tunnel with guts and blood coming out seems like the most sensible route out of this place."
Williamz well, you have to admit that progress in this game was through trails of blood and dead bodies.
Idk, that was the route I went first time I went through the level
"Whatever ate this guy, should be now full."
also blood and guts that literally lead you to a fountain that heals you
Williamz Where WERE the guts/blood coming from though?
I never knew it was an alarm, I just thought the vortigaunts at one point just noticed that Freeman wasn't one of them
Yea me too.
I thought it was due to the Alien Controllers.
I thought the sound was one of the vortigaunts eating a sandwich off screen and started gargling in shock when he saw Freeman.

Well, I think it ties in more to the lore actually since the vortiguants hadn't had any actual intention to hurt freeman (due to the voritguants hating the nihilanth), they only were required to due to their shock collars.
Thanks, will do, comrade! Make sure to let me know when some of your projects are out there, so i could share them
*Keep making more of those, you do a really good job!*
its crazy how you are still finding these the well never dries up huh?
If this was a well in Africa, it would have had wars fought over it.
Valve's ambition had no end
The PineApple well it definitely ended quite a few years ago haaha
Finding things that have been known about since launch year.
@@iambrett333 laughs in half-life alyx
Neat, but putting a random stealth section in a game which AI isn't normally built for it is quite weird design.
Actually, the AI itself does allow to try a stealthy approach (for example, enemies can't hear you if you're crouching etc.), it's just that most of the game isn't designed with stealth in mind.
Ahh I really need to play this game
Same here. My memories...
PLAY IT
Wow Half-Life AI is so intelligent and well coded!
*Hides in a tiny whole and giant monster forgets I exist*
No, it looks for you and can not find you.
It thinks there is a tunel leading somewhere else. so he looks for another exit
Better than most games coming out now, unfortunately :(
It's more like the giant monster gave up killing you because it can't reach you
1:02 someone saw suspicious activity and called the reinforcements
Chat: Kick Gordon pls
After all these years. I still terrified of Gargantuans. Especially when they are charging at you while your screen is shaking
I never even knew there was an "alarm system" because I always took the stealth route...
Yea, I'm surprised that many people didn't used this route.
You guys are both in 2037.
I didn't know there was an 'alarm system' because I just assumed they were scripted events triggered like everything else in the game. It's not like a police siren goes off.
6:50 *BOOM* "What's that then?" "There's someone prowling around 'ere!"
I've played this game for years and never knew about this.
I just learning more and more about how many details this game has.
The vortigaunt is like trying to work, but the Alien controller has alerted
I've finished this game 5+ times and I've never ever noticed the stealth aspect of Xen. Never knew you could sneak past the Tentacles either. Matter of fact I never noticed many things about HL1 until I started watching Marphy's vids.
I should play through it one more time with his videos as a guide to noticing the details.
7:15 The vortigaunts there are like: "I don't get paid enough to deal with your bullshit"
This level of quality in a game thats over 20 years old.... its beyond amazing
"However, ducking into this tunnel will trick it into hunting outside of the cave."
*Gargantua continues to glitch out*
Half-life is a masterpiece for all times!
half life really was ahead of its time, it even had a half baked stealth system that every fucking game has now
Let me say this again
Ahead of its time
That's awesome!
Never stop making this kind of videos.

quit using mods, your stealth can't go up that high

His only mistake is the lack of capitalization and apostrophe, minor mistakes compared to others I've seen and it could just be that he's in a hurry.

_And_ the space before the question marks.
Technically the multiple question marks too if we want to get really pedantic, which I don't.
@@Her_Imperious_Condescension He's probably French or something.
oh my god that gargantua scared the crap out of me, when he was looking left and right then looked back, boom i literally died

Your Half Life Fact Series is truly a treat every time. No matter what gimmick you elaborate, it always makes the day.
And I'm sure the blinking video will too.
When I got to that part, the first thing I did was killing the Alien Grunts guards but other than that I never knew this before
3:50
Ah yes. Remember when it was just one garg chasing after you instead of ten? Good times, good times
Really? If that's the case then Valve really just got kinda lazy then
Maybe rocket chamber just happened to match a kind of den they live in in their natural habitat?
Xen isn't that bad until you get to that factory...although that part where you get on a pipe is pretty annoying.
Lol the fact that I just straight went into murder mode on this spot, even killed the big guy
Best video I've seen this year
marph, in all seriousness, every time you make one of these you just always remind and reassure me why half life is my favorite videogame, thank you for that
This game is still amazing 20 years later.
you and half life 1 still amazes me. man your videos all goosebumps.
Solid Gordon
Gordon? Gordon?!!? GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANN
If only you could stealth swim past Muddy.
Why do those Vortigaunts remain neutral? Are they tired of being slaves? Are they paying attention only to their work? Are they a different kind of Vortigaunt? Is it a bug?
I think it's intentional, it's their way of subtly rebelling. If you stay too long a controller pops up and they all turn hostile.
That's just awesome. What a great game. Thanks Tamamo!
That or they're like any office workers
Proof that playtesting things into oblivion isn't always the best answer, nobody would find this gem and they'd remove it entirely in beta
Half-Gear Solid.
Here's to hoping that Black Mesa:Xen will expand on the stealth aspect.
*grunt noises*

Fun Fact: An alternate way of getting through this bit, is by simply quickly jumping into the portal with your jet booster thing.
Half-Life: Tactical Espionage Action
ever since i saw this i've been taking the stealth path ever since.
I really hope Crowbar Collective translates this into Black Mesa's Xen chapters.
I always killed those first two grunts with the crossbow. Never had to deal with reinforcements from them.
When will we solve the mystery of the missing revolver reloading sounds?
Thanks for keeping the community alive! These videos are incredible, keep up the great work!
This is some next level shit on 90s.
I love your HL facts, dude. It's awesome how you kept doing these for so long. Respect: ++

Wow.... i played half time a bunch of times, and this "stealth" approach was the only one i always went throught, never knew about the main route you present first... good video and good work !
this kinda looks like a tutorial on how to pass it without killing aliens
btw awesome video as always bro keep up the good work
Such an engrossing video! I really rdidn't know about that route, and you showed it off wonderfully!
Stealth? Half Life? I did a video of stealth in Half Life too, I never knew about this :o I'm gonna try doing this, thank you for this wonderful video, hope Black Mesa has this feature too!
You just felt so lonely when in Xen. Was such an odd feeling.
Half-life was released in 1998, but this game still does not stop wondering
Didn't know the Vortis at the mines wouldn't shoot on sight. I actually tried to be stealthy in this part, spending a LOT of time trying to not get seen, and thought it worked. Lol.
Mines? I tought it was a factory...

"Okay, this is Xen job guys, nice and easy. Pickup the HEV suit when you will be ready. Dont trigger the alarm"
So much detail in this game. My god.
Wow. Now there's an alternate way to play the Xen chapter. I'll be damned!
Freeman: hides in a tunnel in front of the gargantua
Gargantua: hm idk where he went
Fun facf: Shockwave has a 14 meter blimdspot
Cool.
i didn't know about this on my first run through of hl1 but picked up on it as at that point i noticed that using the crossbow to kill stuff silently is a powerful tool, i even did this whole level without alerting anything besides the garg, its still interesting to see it dissected and i didn't even know about the alarm system, i just figured alerting the grunts triggered the spawns
I've played this game for so many years and I did not even notice about these details, good video
