First I heard of profiling was with Popa (my age is showing). He advocated for a 28-30' radius on goalie skates and showed that a properly cut skate could stand on its own and pivot on that one contact point. It was interesting to see as some people had bad cuts and multiple points of contact which would slow them down. Currently, I'm on a Goalie SAM profile . It was recommended to me and I can honestly say I am not in tune enough to know how it helps me and if it really is right for me.
When I went from a neutral profile to my first goalie profile, I noticed a big difference in my ability to get good bite from my blade in seemingly any position, it was quite a dramatic difference.
This was a great video! I'm debating on switching up my stock ccm xsg blades with step steel ones. I'm a relatively new goalie, and would love to get my first profile and good steel from Tydan! Thank you so much for this awesome bts look at their awesome work and the discount code! :)
Glad you liked the video, I don't think you will be disappointed by making that investment. I think you will be shocked at how much better it feels. Let me know how it goes.
How do you choose your initial profile? My kid is starting as goalie and I am now changing his hollow (since that is what I know and can suggest what he could feel) but at what age would you recommend profiling and what would initial setup be like (still need to look at the website)
I would wait until you goalie is probably 14-16 before I would consider it personally. Let them learn to be a great skater first, then add profiling. In terms of knowing where to start they make it super easy for you. If you go to tydanblades.ca/ they have the "MyEdge Assessment" where you fill in a questionnaire and they give you a recommendation. That's what I did my first time.
Great video! Would love to see more on the layout of the profile radius along the blade. The info on the difference between radius shapes is not as easy to find. Im rocking the goalie sam profile for 2nd season. Its been great but i woukd like to see more info on the differet profiles that are out there and their applicatios.
I've been experimenting with profiling since I began goalie 4 years ago. Played around with some custom stuff, WIN, SAM, and at the moment I am trialing goalie ellipse profile. I mean when I've tried to talk about it with people it's usually a voodoo witchdoctor thing nobody understands. I have True custom boot, with CCM XSG holder, and Tydan DLC blades.
@@goalietraining I am size 8 EEE, even CCM total customs where not wide enough for me. I have had like 2 other pairs of Trues and these are the best I've had in terms of fit. Needed a stupid boot stretcher to be involved, but eh I got skates to fit me.
My goalie is at 16U AA and serious about doing it as long as he can. We currently get it manually cut at 1/2” No profiling. We are in Dallas, TX area and not sure we have access to that kind of detail here. Question I have is he is interested in getting the blades cut to where the inside edge is longer than the outer edge. Does this fall in the profiling area and is this something that you would recommend?
I have never tried it before, so I cannot comment on it. I know some goalies who like it, but I would probably try a profile first. These guys do international work and they cover the duties, etc. It would be worth asking them.
As a goalie who hasn’t dipped her toes into profiling yet but wants to, what are the differences between Atomic K-Cut, SAM, WIN and how does one decide where to start?

are there recommended hollows or even profiles for young goalies, especially new ones? Or is it more about learning how to skate on them effectively, and then get into the science of hollows and profiles?
I think for a young goalie, I would get them accustomed to skating on regular blades - - that will be a "big rock" skill to develop; then when they are older profiling can come into the equation.
I'm sold. Is there a coupon code? Thought you might have shared it at the end of the video. The only other thing that would have been helpful is to hear about some of the different profiles and their characteristics. Thanks Maria!
Great idea on the coupon code - let me see what the boys at Tydan can do for us. I could have shot a few videos down there for sure, but really the benefit of Tydan is the guys can gather info from you and then give you a specific recommendation based on what feel you want. It is so cool. But I agree, a repeat visit is a good idea. Thanks for the feedback Adam ... and if I get that code I'll let you know.
Out of curiosity what profile are you using right now cause I think the profile you mentionned in your older video doesn't exist anymore or they changed the name of it ? I just did their profile assesment and they say Apex 1/2 hollow for me I'm currently running a 24-28 (WIN) profile with 3/4 hollow since my local have a different mahcine (PRo Sharp Profiling) and profile name/numbers are limited compared to what Tydan can do. Will give them a try on my 2nd set of blades
I am using the "Atomic K-Cut" on these new blades and they are 3mm blades rather than the old ones that were 4mm blades. The guys are really approachable so you could probably let them know what you currently have, how you like it or what you don't like about it and they can customize it for you too. The possibilities are limitless.
Yep, that's what I got and I LOVE it! Very responsive, but stable at the same time. I'm not sure they publish the values for their own custom profiles, but you could always reach out to them and ask.

Hey Maria, super interesting video as usual. What do you think when should I do the off ice training before ice or after ice? which one is better?
It depends a bit on what your workout for the day is, but without knowing any of the details, if I had to pick on, I would stay after your skate.
