- Tennis player in green shirt (Most Exhausting Player) is 7-4 in singles competition in the USTA 4.5 league for 2019 and 3-0 in Summer of 2020 and 1-0 in Fall of 2020 in Atlanta. He played USTA 4.5 league in both Atlanta and Virginia. He also reached the final of a 300 points USTA 4.5 Championship tournament in Virginia by defeating the #1 and #3 seeds in the second and third rounds. Green shirt played in the 3.5 league in 2012, 4.0 in 2014, and 4.5 since 2015. He started playing tennis at 32 years old.
Tennis player in white shirt (50 year old) was 5-1 in the USTA 4.5 league during the Winter 2019 season and 3-3 for Summer and Fall 2020.

I was honored to take on MEP. I have played next to him on a couple occasions and knew it would be an interesting contrast of styles. I definitely was not going to grind it out, but even with me playing an aggressive style - MEP is able to extend points, wrong foot you and make you hit a lot of shots from awkward positions (often when you feel like you have the point wrapped up). He has an amazing ability to antipcate but more importantly never stops moving his feet until the ball is in the fence.
I can't tell you the last time I came to the net that often and came over that many backhands but I thought that was my best chance and stayed with it, even after dropping that second set. I tried to get back in that 2nd but MEPs will was strong and he fought off a lot of break points. Really thought if converted that break at 1-1 in the second I might have a chance to break away, but he fought his hardest at that moment. After that went into a bit of a lull due to feeling a huge opportunity had passed. Playing MEP requires some mental flexibilty and constant fine adjustments. looking forward to our next encounter becasue as we know, MEP will be even more determined and create a whole new challenge to overcome.

51yo, that was great Tennis with incredibly precise ball placement and the ability to confidently play powerful winners from slow (pushed) balls. MEP doesn't seem to like flat balls and slices (excellent backhand slice too). I guess you're playing Eastern grip on your forehand, right? You also were able to play harder from high bouncing balls which I think means that you hit them flat(ter).
I've noticed that MEP's most underrated qualities is his ability to return serves. He gets every serve back. It's rare to see him aced. Coupled with the fact that he almost never doubles makes him a formidable opponent.
50yr old is seriously good. I hope I can have his athleticism at that age. His one hander is so good, almost like Gaston Gaudio. And ooh the net skills!

The difference maker in this match was 50s slice backhand. Excellent shot , good control in both direction and depth. Very few floaty ones. Few errors which is what you expect from a competent slice backhand. It’s getting more rare to see a rec tennis player that has a real good slice backhand and know how to use its strengths.

Finally someone has a drop shot skill to exploit MEPs forward movement.
"50 year old" was up in a few games he should have closed out in the second set. When ever your 40-0 up, always try to win the game with that point in a high % way. Mess around taking risks and you'll be back to deuce quickly.
MEP was right about that volley in the tie break, if he would have won that he would have got momentum.

Yeah but 50 had messed up on some of his serve returns and made too many mistakes that's why he was up 40 0 and lost several games. So he was up abt 4-1 and then found himself struggling at 4-4 because of hitting too many loose balls. An that's why it lead to a tiebreak take the 1st set at 7.5 when he could've won it 6-4 in the 1st set had he been more solid on his serve returns instead of making those errors and hitting the ball out on those crucial points in the match. However if you are up 40 0 and just need one point to close out the game, you don't want to waste away too many free points with errors...
When players are up 40 0 I would encourage
them to hit a short wide angle to make life more harder for the returner every now and again. Instead of just crushing the ball down the T going for a big crushing serve and missing Although at 40 0 you can afford to do that.
I like your point about being up 40-0 and continuing to play high percentage. Think this is important against consistent opponents.

Justin and Ben - fantastic match guys - I was glued to every point - and I didn't watch the US Open this year or the French. I swear this is so much more fun to watch because this is the tennis most of us play. Both of you guys made some great adjustments as the match progressed. Very impressive. Loved this match! Massive well done to both players!! The first time I saw MEP I confess to being a hater but he has won me over a thousand times -- I realise now that I was just hating myself because a good counter-puncher would usually beat me hands down. The match was like fire and ice clashing out, both played pretty even. But in the end 50 y techniques exhausted MEP and secured the win by a small margin

This is the best strategic match I've seen vs MEP. He made MEP moved around and ended points with nice volleys. His sliced backhand was a huge weapon. I've seen too many matches vs MEP where the guy just think he can overpower MEP and it just doesn't work out.

Lovely match. Mature play from 50 year old. MEP needs more assertive shots as shown here he cant just rely on his tried and trusted tactics of pushing, draw and lob/pass when an opponent actually has a solid all round game. Great match up and looking forward to the next one!

Clap Clap Clap!!! Those 'pros' look like they are from some other universe. These guys look so 'reachable'.. As a 51 y.o. myself, I can fully appreciate the amazing qualities of that game.. a lovely, flowing backhand that seeks out All corners of the court (From all corners, no less.. both as a juicy slice or raspy brush-drive), a mean volley and a forehand that was sulking, i suspect.. still, to beat MEP in such a manner is truly something. MEP, you were outdone by a really special old man, so those "7 years" did not matter.. take heart, you are still a Noble Prize winner for us!
This is one of the most pleasant matches to watch in Tennis Troll. True well played amateur tennis. Didn't see any try of atp like winners, what I saw were 2 tennis players with great knowledge of their games, and within that, they did the best.
Ben with his highly known solid style, and 50yo with the best of a classical style, elegant and smart gameplay. It was delightful to see 50yo mixing pace, spin, height and shot placement. His slice backhand was nasty, leaving Ben out of position for many times. 50yo hit BH slices down the line, crosscourt, and inside out in returns of serve. This caused a lot of trouble to Ben.
Besides that, 50yo showed an all court play. He went to the net consciously, hit flat FH, smashed great, showed he knows a lot about the tennis game.

Fun match. 5150 stuck to his plan, accepted his misses as part of the game, and pressed on. In the end it payed off for him. MEP also did his thing in the face of some adversity. They were both good at controlling the things they had control over.

That particular game is a study in how to attack a counter puncher. You have to be comfortable coming to net. Really nice work from 50.

I really never had problem with pushers. I'm not good enough to blast the ball, but I am good enough to give rhe ball a little more pace than the pusher gives me. That puts me in a position to move them around the court. But if you're mentally weaker, you have no patience and just want the point to end quickly (but not good enough to end point quickly), or you don't have the fitness and enough control to stay in the point, you will lose. I'm near 60 now and will definitely lose to MEP 6-1 6-1 or something like that, but the pace that MEP feeds is like a 3.5 level, which I can handle if I don't have to run .

There is a notable difference in the ages 43 and 50.
50 year old has a good serve, volleys and a nice backhand. Hard to tell if he will slice or drive on the backhand. Cool headed too, didn't get drawn out of his game by MEP

Great example of maturity, patience, and experience, and overcoming the odds against someone younger, faster, and more handsome. MEP took off hat in the first set, changed shirt in the 2nd. Love MEP's occasional right hand forehand, and if he ever gets a killer shot, he would be unbearable.
I think he hit 5 or 6 of them, and I believe all were in play. Amazing....

The match-up of the century.
Out of all the lower-gear 4.5 kind of players featured on this channel, 50-year-old is the most balanced/rounded along with NYC. But unlike NYC, his style is aggressive and explosive, which makes him a delight to watch. Big serve, solid groundstrokes, net play, anticipation and footwork, mental strength and patience.
He beat MEP (I think a bit more comfortably than the scoreline suggests), because he can do whatever MEP does, plus a lot more. When MEP slices, he slices even lower. When MEP drops, he drops even closer to the net. When MEP anticipates, he is already two strokes ahead. But he can also hit strong forehands, he can come to the net successfully to end the point before it gets too long, and trade his great backhand slice for a consistent topspin one-hander when the point set-up calls for it. Surprisingly, his powerful serve, which is one of his strongest assets, proved somewhat ineffective in this match, as MEP's returns were really smart and consistent.
There is not much to say about MEP, the guy is a legend, he played a great game but was out-MEPed in the end for all the aforementioned reasons.
All in all, great match by the two GOATS. I would like to see a match-up between 50-year-old and Acing Tennis.
Acing tennis is improving. He is working hard and should be cracking the 4.5 league soon.

I didnt even think he ever went back there except to pick up stray balls. This exhausting dude is a great matchup against anyone, i swear.
They are both entertaining. 50 year upgraded his forehand since this match. Need to get him on another video and see what he does differently and how he improved it.

Wow - I thought this matchup would be great matchup. The aggressive precision of 50 yr old vs the toughness of MEP. I thought MEP played a lot more aggressive than in other matches, as he had to. Well played on both sides. My initial thought was that 50 year would shred MEP, but it's not so easy and MEP stepped up his game. Big credit to 50 yr old still having a lot of energy in the tie-break, and moving better than I've ever seen him.
Offensive style tennis vs Defensive style tennis. Exciting stuff. I think it what makes Federer vs Nadal interesting too. Djokovic vs Nadal isn't as exciting - their games are more similar. Contrasting styles are exciting.
When the 50 year old runs better than a 20 year old
MOST ENJOYABLE PLAYER.
This is how you play a player like MEP. Continuously moving inside the court and take the ball early, since MEP'S shots don't have pace and most of the time just underspin. He's gonna try to lob, then it's good to practice overhead. If you lose, so what, but if the other player had not been out of shape, it would have been 6-2 6-2

@@MEPTennis It's actually not anything unusual. You always have to exploit the opponent's weakness, whether you play pro or amateur tennis. The only question is are you good enough to execute. The game plan against MEP is very simple. It's only the execution that decides the outcome. Most players playing MEP maybe didn't have the skill to execute, or didn't have the confidence. Once in a while a player can execute and play the right game plan, then MEP loses, simple as that.
I always look whether MEP’s shorts pockets are drawn out as he tends to play much better when that happens. There’s levels to it: first it’s just the left pocket and he plays ok, but when both left and right are flapping around - forget it! It’s MEP God mode!

Good match Justin. I know playing this type of player can be frustrating. Most descent players feel they should beat his style of player but they can easily revert from there game plan to playing their opponents game. You stuck with your aggressive play and it paid off. It was an entertaining match. I watched the whole thing.

I can't believe I just watched this (but I did) scrolled to the tiebreaker after awhile. 50yo showed some nice skills! Power Topspin on both side, nice slice, power serve, good net game and put away the overheads. MEP has the serve of a 10 year old, an incorrect forehand, a chop backhand, no overhead, weak dropshots and really didn't even see a very good volley. Any 4.0 in Colorado would crush MEP! With all of that said, I watched it. It was entertaining. And a nice job of editing.
Thank you for the feedback. MEP is a unique player. His technique is not idea but his drive and tennis IQ are amazing.
We do have video footage of him playing a 4.0 from Southern California which several viewers suggest is the strongest region. Maybe we'll show it one day. Haven't decided.
Good show , 50 year old is one of my favorite players in the tennis troll ensemble. That point at 13:52 was killer, great hustle. 50 year old was like a vegomatic out there, slicing and dicing. Question, is a top spin return on the MEP serve impossible?
No, we can just use the buggy whip forehand for the serve return because MEP's serve is too slow. So there's plenty of time to swing at the ball.
Yeah u need a lot of racquet head speed to return his low slice serve with top spin. Not easy.. a slice return is easier and safer at this level and not make risky error..
@@whuang03 It is more easy to spin the ball with the reverse forehand than with the normal forehand as the normal forehand requires more effort to get the ball spinning high enough rpms to keep it in the court. I think the flat forehand takes more effort to spin if the ball is going fast or is heavy.
More forehand errors than usual from MEP. Made the difference in the first set.
It was like watching two great Sushi chefs out there, slicing with such precision and control. I'm sure the tennis balls were bald by the end of the match. Wish I could have half as good of a slice as either one of these players has. Great match.

Great cat and mouse- experience really counted a lot- I could tell 50yrs was uncomfortable a little in hitting his top spin shot to dictate during rallies but he still went for it in the tiebreak. He had some unforced errors but he adjusted andstill he was able to move the ball short and deep, attacking and making Mep uncomfortable. I thing both played to their strength good tactical game. I would have prefer for MEP to move 50yr a little more side to side but overall great match both sides

Pure drive tour. Usually Solinco confidential with Gamma Live Wire XP in crosses (16g on both). Inch and a half of lead at 3,9 o'clock with just a smidge on the too. Brings weight to 12.3 ounces. Most of this match played with Weiss Canon Ultra Cable as experiment..very similiar to hyperG...
50yo slices are loaded, also some surprising backhand groundstroke when you thought he only hits slices. The ability to keep the ball low and deep and from corner to corner even on off balance running on baseline, half volley and volley keeps MEP off balance, he can cut the ball deep and a lot of variety of shots. Thought MEP will get the tie break as his game didn't change from set1 to tiebreak where you don't really see the fatigue effect but 50yo drank some juice from fountain of youth on tiebreak and looks like a different player from set2. Good game to both.

Dude! That first point of the game at 6-5 was GREAT! Pro-quality, really. So far it looks like MEP has (finally) come up against a worthy opponent. Will keep watching, and give my play-by-play for anyone interested. Only thing is, can this guy keep his head on straight? Like most MEP matches, it's all about "trying too hard", "missing the easy ones" and the resultant mental meltdown that ensues. But can a mature mind counteract this to-date ruthlessly effective strategy? Can't wait to see, rooting for Old Guy, tho! (Sorry, MEP 😭)
Don't know about the 'OUT' call at 15:39?? Replayed it many times at 0.25 speed and it sure looks 'IN' to me. The still shot isn't proof positive - you need to see a change in trajectory to determine whether the ball is touching the court at that instant. Guess the ol' "when in DOUBT, don't call 'OUT''" rule isn't in effect here. Hmm...
2nd game, 2nd set: Hey, Old Guy a _PLAY-YUH_ ! Good spinning 1st serve, forehand a weapon, killer + reliable BH slice, comes to net and is capable volleyer. Good all-court player, patient yet takes the initiative. Should leave his topspin BH on the practice court until it's trustworthy as it's a very self-conscious shot. Mobility is an issue, don't know about stamina just yet. Great MEP match! 1st time I've seen him (MEP) showing signs of frustration/disappointment in his own game. Unforced errors racking up, from MEP? Say it ain't so, Joe!

I foolishly watched the first three games and scrolled to the end. I honestly thought MEP had another victim. My bad. 50YO has a very strong and consistent serve and backhand. I believed that he would over hit the ball because MEP doesn’t hit with power but with placement. And with the fitness of the two... MEP would take it because he can stay out there forever. Kudos to 50YO. I was about to buy me a MEP green shirt 😀👍🏽
pre match - I've seen a lot of MEP and called him wrong last time against NYC. 50YO has probably the volley & overhead game to take on MEP's neutralizing balls. MEP may still win though, thanks to better physique. 65-35 for MEP. Now let's do some stats!

I have a question for 50 year old. He started the match really hot with his backhand, hitting winniner and opening angles. But suddenly he seemed to lose confidence with that shot and hit 90% slice.
Why? Is that your game? I mean, you have a beautiful backhand and really hurts your opponent.
Hey there, I was probably reverting to a safety zone as I was really pushing myself to come over it more but in the second set, since i was playing from behind, i took some risk out of the equation. Was not a conscience decison, just my go to pattern. Obviously, I was making the right choice to commit to coming over it as much as possible as those are the periods in the match I had control over more of the points. Due to grip changes, it takes a lot of committmemlnt on my part to come over it more than half the time. I have been focusing on that for the last couple of years bit hard for me whenni can rely on making few errors with a slice BH. KEEP SWINGING !!!

Exactly the right the question I think! And exactly the right answer! So many one handers have this same problem (myself included) and even Federer! The 1HT requires such perfect technique to maintain the correct kinetic chain that it falls apart if you are low on confidence or not hitting through through the ball - you can't muscle it like a two hander - hence falling back on the slice!

I was looking forward to this matchup. I thought 5051 played the style you have to play to beat MEP. It seemed to me that MEP didn’t like the real low slices to his backhand and 5051 also didn’t get too close to the net which would allow MEP to hit lob winners. If they played 10 times, they would probably each win 5. I’m a Pats fan so my condolences to MEP for the last 2 decades. The Bills future looks bright now though.
So yeah, this was a lot of fun to watch but the biggest treat for me was the sound of the50's racquet on serve! Is that a Babolat?!

Message for Ben, first of all I enjoy watching your matches, I love your high competitive spirit. I would suggest your get your toss on your first serve up a few inches and you'll get a lot more out of it without having to change much else. It might get your a free point from time to time and save energy, especially in those hot Georgia summer matches.
I believe he had a coaching lesson recently and it'll be posted on Crunch Time Coaching Channel. Curious to see what suggestions they discussed. Will say his serve has improved since this video. More pop.
Weird serve routine but great serve, nice way to cut the angles by covering the ball two (on both forehand and backhand)! Knees stay too high but great level!
Credit for exhausting player, he has a great return quality.
His serve is a little different but it works for him. It’s almost like Stefan Edberg as one viewer mentioned.
