This was what I heard when I got home from school and switched on the old console TV, waiting for Gilligan or cartoons or something. Liked it even as a kid, when I was older and got into jazz I realized why. Shades of "Round midnight" or "Harlem nocturne". Love that noir sound!
I feel the same, glad I ran home from school and recorded the themes, one theme that is real clean recording had a small part at the end missing but in Canada they usually played the theme right to the end so I got that and spliced it on the good recording on the internet, thanks so much for your comment and Happy 4th!
Your very talented Sharon. Yout Raven character had me loving to watch the Edge of Night after school. Loved your personality and your quite beautiful.. I read about you also being a nurse in real life. It's a pleasure seeing this soap oppera again with your character as Raven.
Beautiful, jazzy -- and haunting, all at once. Love it! Love the vocal version, too. It has a slightly slower tempo, which makes it all the more haunting.
Will continue with the second half of THE EDGE OF NIGHT in just a moment, and now the second half of THE EDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDGE OF NIGHT the second half of THE EDGE OF NIGHT is brought to you by Creamy mildest Ivory Liquid and by Cascade it leaves your dishes virtually spotless.
Bhim, if you see this, I couldn't reply to your comment below but someone else has posted the vocal version of the theme under the title ' full lyric version' Edge of Night theme. I wish they had the copy from the source. There are a couple of clips on youtube that play the lyric theme , but incomplete but great quality audio! The version listed above is probably off of a tape recorder and mic, but enjoy when you find it.
Thank you for sharing this theme, I remember in the 8th grade when I was home sick from school for almost a month (1980) I started watching this during the Draper Scott Emily Michaels saga, always have loved this theme, I found about half the theme (vocal version) at the end of one of the episodes and thought of posting it here on youtube but it's only half, I'm going to search and see if I can't find the full vocal theme version. thanks again I really enjoyed hearing this.
JerBear J Hi, thanks for the compliment. I will tell you this about what you might post, there is a complete vocal theme, you might have come across it although the quality is suspect, but it is complete. There is a posting though of the vocal theme that almost goes halfway and is likely recorded on a vcr, the quality is good almost studio quality. Would yours likely match this half recording posted here? I think you should post it, that would be great. Please send me a message if you post it, I would like to hear it!
I think I got it from a youtube post that says something about EON 1980 ending theme, it shows Raven Swift when you first open it and then the credits, it's the longest one I've found so far, there is one that is like a tribute with misc. video clips but the quality is like a transistor radio, LOL but an interesting tribute, I will send you the link here in a sec of the video.
JerBear JThanks a million! You are right. This is the one that I thought of, it is studio type quality! I like both vocal themes but love the first vocal theme best! Mark Faulkner, have U ever heard of him? He has the The Edge of Night page with themes, the Paul Taubman orch. theme , I gave him is on it. He told me once, we used to chat back and forth, he told me that there is a PandG vault that holds Soap material, not a joke, not tide, lol but themes , video of the Soaps like , Edge , ATWT, Guiding Light etc. It is possible that they have the video of Edge back in what....'78 that played the vocal theme right to the end. I could have recorded it that day but missed it. That point I had direct from tv to tape audio recorder quality, wished I had done it. He said though in the archives there may be this ep. and long play of the vocal theme right to the end. The theme was so long that they started the inst. version at the end of the vocal to complete the credits!! He or someone else may find it someday! I like the one you pointed out, quality is pure and wish that the theme went past the piano part in the middle. Nice chatting with you...Mike.
I remember how if you were a dude and you told peeps that you like EON, they would be all, "You like to watch *soap operas*?" But EON was just as much a crime-drama show as it was a soap, and that's why a lot of men and boys watched it on the sly.
I know huh! I lived in Northern Ontario and 'Edge' was gone a year earlier on CBC in Canada but aired on a Northern Mich. station of ABC....Months before its final airing , they replaced it with Rocky and Bullwinkle! Sad!!!
@@MrMb58 The Edge Of Night Episode I Remember From 1979 When Nicole And Winter Was Fighting On Top Of The Catwalk At The WMON Station When Winter Was Revealed As Wade Meecham's Killer.
For me it's the '77-'80 version. Its just so incredibly eerie with the way the backdrop looks and rolls in. This version has most of the same qualities, except the one I mean just gets REALLY witchy when the voices come in. I don't like the later ones with the drum machine and the ones even after about '83 which sound like they were made for a roller rink.

I always liked this theme from EON. They "updated" it 1980 and I felt this was when the show started going downhill. They should have not messed with the theme or the formula which made this show such a success for so many years.
We were lucky in Canada, CBC had the copy of what ever style of the theme that was playing at the time. Most of the time they let the music run. Sometimes they started from the middle!
Thanks for sharing, I love this theme.. I just graduated H.S .. loved the beautiful RAVEN character.. Play by SHARON GABET. Eventually I had a crush on Jodi Travis, played by LORI LAUGHLIN, for who today is living her "NIGHTS ON THE EDGE". Sheosy her career so if they find her guilty, they should just have her pay the penalties, court costs , fines she already lost her career. She dont need to be going to jail,
The only soap opening music to rival this is Dark Shadows (black and white or color). Most of the daytime dramas, as their audiences declined, would fiddle with the opening, trying to appeal to younger viewers. (It never worked). But this isn't the original EON opening--this is a rare instance of a soap finding its perfect style towards the end of its run.
In early 1978, "Edge" was on a trial run for a few months on WOWK-TV 13 in Huntington, WV (now CBS) up against "Mr. Cartoon" on WSAZ-TV (the most popular program in the market's history) and reruns of :The Brady Bunch" on WCHS-TV, so "Edge" didn't stand a chance against these two power house programs.
I understand, they took it off in Canada and I lived across from upper Michigan and they kept it , it was from Traverse City Mi.....then they took it off in favour of Rocky and Bullwinkle, I was so mad I called the station! They said it was an executive decision....crazy!

This was a very memorable closing theme. I have it on a soap-opera CD when the website 'WoST-The World Of Soap Themes' was still around in 2002. I just wish that there more CD soap-theme compilations available. I really would love it if someone would post the full close theme of Search For Tomorrow from 1981 before it was changed to the smooth jazz trumpet theme. Which I hated.

My favorite opening for any soap opera theme! Sorry young and the restless!
When I would come home from school . I would watch this soap opera I was only 9yrs old, but I love it.
Beautiful. This music makes You feel like You really ARE on "The Edge" of Night.

One of my favorite closing themes. Beautiful stuff.

When ABC gave The Edge of Night the pinkslip as a Christmas present in 1984, they played this song during the closing credits
I know huh! I lived in Northern Ontario and 'Edge' was gone a year earlier on CBC in Canada but aired on a Northern Mich. station of ABC....Months before its final airing , they replaced it with Rocky and Bullwinkle! Sad!!!
I had to see the final episodes in re-runs the following year on the USA network.
I Was So Mad When ABC Cancelled The Edge Of Night After Christmas In 1984.
Chris, I felt the same, after giving the theme an update too, so stupid, maybe because it was never an ABC original!

I love this closing theme - no vocals. I also love the disco version that's just a longer version of the opening title.

As much as I love this closing theme, it sounds like it could be the closing theme to Dark Shadows, that 1960s- 70s gothic, Vampire soap-opera.
