My take from the review is that Saladin has relatively simple rules, high number of complicated decisions to make. The best boardgames and wargames have simple rules and lots of decisions. Also it is quick to play. Sounds like a real winner. The thing it probably really needs is a solo mode. In the Covid day and age a solo wargame which is quick to play sounds very appealing.
That same teetering on the edge feeling was present in the old Avalon Hill game, Alexander. What a nerve wracking feature. Thanks for another enjoyable, informative review!
Thoughtful comments about the color of the game. Red green colored blindness is most common in males. And males tend to be the most common wargamers. I personally am red green color blind but not severe. It tends to be most pronounced when red and green colors are in close proximity to each other such as on die color as you mentioned in your example.I could not be a pilot in the army as a result but they would Let me be a tank officer.
The game looks great. I like the abstraction behind the mechanics. As we all know the warfare of the past is quite often rather murky when it comes to details and broad brush strokes might be closer-to-reality approach than counters with hundred of values. Looking forward to the game and to your review of it (we know it's going to happen guys ;))
First thanks for putting this together. I was on the fence on whether I would Kickstarter or not. You helped me decide. The order tokens with the dice is interesting, I like that. I like the cards and layout. There does not seem like a lot to replay with a double sided board though. Perhaps I feel this way because I have been playing Infidel by GMT games the last couple of weeks. Even with Table Battles I have multiple decks so I can come back to the game again and again. I think it is very limiting with a fixed board like that. I know you can flip it so 2 different battles? The asking price is not high at almost $30 US dollars but I guess I was expecting more variation in the battles.
Hey Guys... Been playing this game for around six times... is this one of the most confusing rule books? Thankfully Stuka Joe did a one-turn play through... LOVE the game, great small footprint , good production quality... Can you give us a play through?
Yes and no. Sure, there might be an outlier or two where the dice are mega one-sided (what game other than chess doesn't have that?) but even when this game felt like it was slipping away from me I was able to get back in and swing it back. Partly that's due to the delicacy of the order economy, but also to do with how quickly it degrades. I lost like three orders really quickly and thought I was hosed, but came back to win it in the later rounds.
ROTHFLMAO!! Grant @ 12:14, "naa, naa, naa, boo, boo". Awesome review guys!!

I have to agree. Anytime a new post pops I know I will be informed and entertained.

These mechanisms remind me very much of W1815, the Waterloo game. Which is fantastic.

Is this one of those games where once you start to lose, it becomes really hard to come back?
