"Yeah, I was just like this."
Holding his cell phone vertically so all he got was a thin vertical video. Even the shark would know to turn the cell phone sideways.

He is indeed a "seasoned" fisherman at the tender age of 16 ! This young man is a 3rd generation commercial lobsterman from a very respected and well known family of fishermen.

Love the fact that a shark expert does not understand surfing enough to see that the stat on shark strikes comes from number of surfers in the water because of morning and afternoon wave quality and thinks that sharks feed at those hours. They don't it's just a lot of people in the water which makes it more likely that a shark will be tempted to check out a leg or two. You could easily be bitten at noon but the surf is not great at noon. The don't surf in winter warning is true though.

Why not surf in the winter?

15 feet is not a baby white shark, I agree keep doing whatever you do in the water though. Chances of an attack are so rare.

I don't get why people dress up like a sea lion and surf these waters? At least don't wear black.

There's always been sharks near La Jolla. Duh. If there's seals on the beach or injured animals anywhere near you, don't go in. Or do and don't think about it

Makes me laugh when news stories break about sharks in the ocean here. FYI there are always sharks in the waters here.

it depends on the species. some species we always have, some are very occasional. adult white sharks spend more time up north in central CA where there is much more large prey like elephant seals. we do not have elephant seals down in SD and we don't have as many pinnipeds in general so no, adult white sharks are not always here.

The Sharks are there because that is where the food(seals) is. Back in the day, the La Jolla Children's pool was actually a place where kids could go swim. Now the nutty environmentalists have let the seals take over and now the sharks hang out looking for dinner.
