I didn't read too many comments here, but from the ones I did read..... I'm kind of amazed that more people don't see this "app" as tongue in cheek, or a wry criticism of our ultra-distracted lifestyle. I LOVED IT, Miranda July! Your work almost always cracks me up.
'Me and You and Everyone We Know' was a masterpiece, and 'The Future' was wonderful. This short is proof that we need another film from Miranda soon. She's almost the Woody Allen of this generation, completely original and intelligent.
She is like that friend of ours who tries too hard to be smart, intelligent, different, hip, philosophical, unique. But she's not any of those things, What she actually is shallow, pretentious, fake and annoying
As a Latina who doesn't dress or talk like these women or knows anyone who does I'm highly disappointed at this portrayal, specially since is coming from one of my favorite directors.
Anthony Ponchelle First of all "mighty Blonde" is just a name. Second, blonde Latinas do exist. hair color has nothing to do with racial stereotypes. Way to jump into conclusions, dipshit!
Like much of July's cinematic and written work, this short/ad is funny, strange, turns the viewer upon their own awkward feelings and has a simple but odd sentiment. As a piece of conceptual art and clothing advertisement, it's probably more successful because of this appealing sense of aesthetics. You never know how sincerely to take her, and the ambiguity works in her favor. There's something both grimacing and serene about this Some body app though. When it comes to legal matters like exchanging documents, an amaneunsis (the person "within hand's reach") is suitable because the material isn't in feeling, but in judicial language, thought written out with some distance or detached from its own interest - though the legal matter might be serious and emotionally charged. But to deliver the "actual" emotional expression of lieu of the sender? Off camera, this practice will in most cases lack the emotional intensity and be challenging of a leap of the imagination when one stares into the face of a total stranger for the message from a loved one.
This app was a really great idea. Im just sad that people didnt used it too much. It would be the really new way to communicate to people. I think that if more people know about this app, they would start take care about others and not still sharing every single moment on the internet.
If you haven't already heard it, you'd probably enjoy the first episode of Reply All which is all about a message sent on the app and the people involved.
I thought the app sounded good on paper, but seeing it in this vid just sickened me. Don't have the guts to break up in person or tell someone how you feel? Can't be bothered showing up to the dinner you intend to propose at? No problem! just get someone else to do it and bear the brunt of the recipient's reaction. If it's good you just missed out on the wonderful moment completely. If it's bad you've brought pain to an undeserving stranger. Yeah... good one.
I liked it, nevertheless some might think that this would be a futuristic work, something that never acutally comes to life, but today this video has become a reality for many.
A reflection on Somebody, a new app by Miranda July by Gavy Kessler Like everything, it starts with a feeling, a need to express. Like most things these days, we take to our device, our technology, our prosthesis that promises to connect our sense of disconnection, to make us bigger than the smallness we know we are. We turn to language and type the message as if to text. But suddenly the mundane and cold experience of digital communication gives way to the ancient thrill of the theater. We, the director, cast one of the nearest people to the recipient, employing the GPS- based self-surveillance that we have all passively agreed to, the technology of Grindr/Scruff or Uber/Lyft, apps which put adjacent strangers into contact The delivery-person now engages in a game of hide-and-seek (you have to find the proper recipient) and in an act of channeling, like a shamanistic performance artist or a bad middle-school play actor, the text message becomes embodied; it has tone, depth, passion, touch, urgency. Can an app, which itself is a tool of the very technology that has expediated our move into the cyborg do the work of renewing a belief in the necesseity of humanism? Can we reclaim the importance of body, voice and touch by rewriting the codes that guide us?
And although the app is probably an attmept to get people to connect with each other, which I support, its probably just going to be used by people who dont have the fucking couratge to tell the recipient people anything themselves, as was represented by this. Its really just going to make a mess of things.
I so fondly dream of the day when people will have learned to restrain from speaking continuously even when (and that's the majority of the times actually) they clearly have nothing to say. And that day shall also be the day when people will have learned to stop using idiotic expressions like dafuq and similar. I am not really defending the clip: everyone is free to like it or hate it. I am just saying that comments like these are just unuseful noise. And for the future: remember there's a button to skip ads.
well you ever had that horrible moment when youtube decides not only will you not have a skip button with this ad you will have a no skip 10 MINUTE ad then you start to like the ad a little and in the end a dude is fingering a plant while a woman translates the horniness -__- so with my freedom of speech i stand by my first comment which is actually one of the only crude comments i have ever posted it takes a lot for me to curse so back off.
it’s been 4 years and i still think about this video all the time lol
lol same!
This feels like an episode of Black Mirrors
Right?!

This idea is genius!
"he wanted something lady and elegant!" high-larious!!
Profoundly genius. Bravo Ms July.

Much better than Allen in my opinion. Did you already watch Kajillionaire?
And like Woody she married her partner's adoptive offspring and makes at least a movie every year!
@@Fnoalle WTF
She is like that friend of ours who tries too hard to be smart, intelligent, different, hip, philosophical, unique. But she's not any of those things, What she actually is shallow, pretentious, fake and annoying
Test my soil. Deeper.
hahahahahah
WE NEED THIS

Come on! of course there are latinas who dress or talk like that, does everythig has to be an stereotype?
Couldn't agree more. The accent was not a Latina accent what so ever! What a shame really
Joking about stereotypes of people that are misrepresented in the media is hilarious! Fuck off!
Well, I guess this means you win!
Now... That was a movie. Great job Ms. July!
The head on Miranda July's shoulders... Amazing.
This was a great short film. The message is great. The funniest part was with Blanca and Yolanda.
Feed me, Seymour!

Best thing i've seen since a looong time!!!!!! Bravo Miranda July

Ironically however there is still a disconnect between the sender and the person receiving the message albeit there is a human "touch" to the message.
Great Job Miranda!!
This is the Miranda July-est app of all time.
Such a fun art project. So sad that it's ending
I'm losing my fuckin mind this is hysterical lmao

Those situations were supposed to be funny/surreal, of course no one would actually use it for those things except as a joke
Christine Goldman And nobody would ever smoke or do drugs either, right?
This video is hilarious! It is so creative! An app that doesn't work is an interesting marketing campaign. This is really thinking outside the box.
Nice work Athena Hunter!! Hugs.
Shout out to my theatre professor for showing me this lol
Miranda July, grrl you just rock my world.
dear god what a depressing song loll time machine back to the 90s please lol
Great film. Didn't realise the app is genuine!
what a great idea for an app! :) this might actually stop us from looking at our phones all day and get us used to talking to people more often!
I liked it, nevertheless some might think that this would be a futuristic work, something that never acutally comes to life, but today this video has become a reality for many.
This is a great comedy
I fear this is where we're heading.
this just brilliant!
this is actually brilliant.
The short I'm in by Miranda July!
This is an advertisement, before videos, 10 minutes? You have to be kidding me, I still sat through the ad, what was the end woman all about :P
the end was the plant speaking
This was fucked up, but I enjoyed the exploration our relationship to technology.
