    I love my D810, its dynamic range is really good. Some of the pictures I took are under exposed or over exposed but came out just right in lightroom because of the D810 dynamic range. Image quality is clear and sharp. The camera makes me looks like I know what I'm doing. I paid more than the current pricing for the D810, but no regret.

    The excitement that many D850 buyers have is similar to what I have for the D810. This is a phenomenal camera, and I can grow with it for a long time.

    Bought my 2nd d810 new this week. One year after my first. I can not fault it. Maybe the large file sizes are not ideal, but just buy bigger storage. The pros out weigh that negative.

    So, with a little bit of sick in my mouth, I’m about to pull the trigger on a D810 to pair with (at your recommendation) my Nikon AF-S 18-35 F/3.5-4.5 G; AF-S 70-300 F/4.5-5.6 IF ED VR; Voightlander 58mm F1.4 Nokton, and last but not least, my little 50mm F1.8 G. It’s been a hard decision to choose between the D810 and D500 but for someone who likes to do a little bit of everything, just for the pleasure of doing it, I think the D810 is what I need. Thanks Ken for your great videos and suggestions. I’m looking forward to playing around with the Voightlander and actually having to manually set the lens.

    I bought the Nikon D810 from a pawn shop for 1100cdn. 7600 pics so basically new and it had the black dot. 50% store wide sale and it came with a lens and bag. I love the camera as I am a novice photographer and learning all the setting has been fun. Yes I want the 850 but thats just because I know its a better rig. I'm slow and methodical so the 810 is perfect for me. I love this channel as I purchase my lenses based on this trusted site. I now own the Tamron 70-200 G2 (1800cdn new), Nikon 20mm (500 cdn used), Nikon 60mm macro D version (130 cdn used), and a Nikon 24-70 ED (600 cdn used). My favorite lens is the Tamron. Thank you so much for your videos and I'm a big fan. Sending love from 🇨🇦.

    Just picked up a good used D810 for $1250.00 off of ebay last week. It's in my hands now. US model, ~30K clicks, original box, battery, charger, BF-1B cap, rear LCD cover. Only downside: grip on the front ever so slightly lifting away from under front control wheel.
    This will be added to my D800's that I use primarily for real estate and portrait work. The D800's make for awesome R.E. cameras. Am thinking the D810 will now be my portrait camera.
    IMHO I think the D800 at ~$800 used and the D810 at ~$1300 used are awesome money maker tools - Thank you Nikon for releasing the D850!

    Not sure if this comment is going to reach you Ken, but I do have a D810 as my first FF dslr. I invested in the old tamron 24-70 and I'd like to make an update after couple of months from buying it. There's a possibility for me to shoot some portraits and events (doing landscape as a hobby) and I'm considering the old nikon 24-70g ed and new tamron 24-70 g2. They're priced pretty similar so I could go for either one although the old nikon would need to be used of course and tamron could be new. Considering this plus things like autofocus or focus breathing, what would you recommend out of these two?

    Hello Ken, I am interested in buying a replacement camera for my trusty decade old d200. I do mostly wildlife with my 80-200 2.8d and 300mm f4 af screw drive, both which I bought off of your recommendation, (they are both AMAZING lenses, you sure know your stuff when it comes to cameras glass)! I really like the d500, because it is a great wildlife camera, but i want to get into portraits. If I were to use my 80-200 or a cheap fast prime, could I make decent portraits? I am aware of the larger DOF with the dx sensor, something many people forget. I am not a "Bokeh Whore" as some people say, so the gain of the dx DOF is not TOO important. You adress this in this video at 6:39, but it would be great if you could elaborate a bit. Im gonna most likely buy the battery grip too, but is that really important? Btw, your videos are awesome and I apologize for the long response. Can't wait for the next live stream, I'll make sure I'll be there :D!

    What about the Pentax K-1? Thinkng about that one with the "kit-lens" 28-105mm. For what I shoot i don not need fast lenses, just good quality for big prints(bigger than 18x12") and weather resistance.

    • @d.r8425
      @d.r8425 7 років тому

      I believe the K-1 has the same sensor as the D810. Some believe the Pentax processor to give cleaner raw files than the D810. It also has that Pixel Shift technology. I believe it is somewhat cheaper aswell. Only going off of what I have read. Wish I had both to test.

    Funny because my back up to the 7100 is a 200 and everybody now hates that camera but for outside or with plenty of light in a not shot that will not be cropped it is really just fine. Ergonomically and access to setting wise it is more like a pro camera.
    Now of course the 7100 has it beat most other ways but if my wife and I go out to shoot together i am grateful to have it. and it, a recent purchase has low low shutter count so I will never wear it out and the day when I sell a photo is likely to never happen

    I started out with 2 nikon aps c camera's, but now I am totally crazy about my fuji xt-t1+56mm 1.2 combo (stuck on there). Yet, I still have some strong feelings towards the D810/85mm 1.4g combo. Would it make sense to switch back (selling the 56 would make me cry a bit, but I don't have sentimental feelings about the 23, 35 and 90mm). Or sell the 23, 35 and 90mm and save up for the difference? I primarily do portrait work, weight is not an issue. Problem is I cant compare it with ff nikon since I dont have experience with that (maybe its not the holy grail).

    And the truth is, even in late 2018, this camera rocks. Great image quality, no doubt. It might not have the best AF, but it works well enough to do weddings (OF COURSE!), and the high iso performance isn't so bad. Last time I checked, though, the price never plummeted like you said it would. Adorama has it listed for about $2800.00 on their site. Still a bargain.

      I went the the 750 and spent the extra money on lenses. Switching from garbage Sony as I used to be a Minolta film guy and had to go Sony years ago or replace all my lenses. (After use I consider Sony to = digital aids) Figured it was time to let go and make the brand switch. I respect this guy's opinion but for the extra $1000 the 810 is not worth the money. 810 has no built in WIFI, slower af system (the old I vs II version? Why nikon!) and worse low light performance than the 750. Yes the 750 has the fucking filter, and imo that's the only downside. You can have the filter removed for $350 or just sharpen via photoshop which is what I will do. I have seen plenty of examples of the 750 sharpened vs 810 and unless you zoom in to +600% (pixel whoring slobs) you can't see a damn difference. Yes a little work in photoshop, you have to hit the one damn "sharpen" button sometimes (not always). 5 seconds out of your day wasted; oh well you will get over it for $1000 less. You can even batch if that's your thing; I prefer to take my time as 5 seconds hitting a button if necessary is nothing imo.
      I wish this guy would have commented on your comment as I too I spent a month trying to figure out 810 vs 750, for your exact same reason (bh aug 2017 750 $1500 w/ grip and extras vs 810 $2500 grip / extras). Unfortunately the 750 is back ordered until June 23 however the 810 is still in stock. Guess we know what everyone else choose too. Spend the extra $1000 on a bunch of lenses. This guy has some great reviews on inexpensive (but good) lenses, just look over his channel. I respect his opinions but I think he is off with his "buy an 810 over the 750" comment. Glass is more important as long as your camera body doesn't suck donkey dick and the 750 is definitely not into beastality.
      I still have time to switch my order (two weeks of back ordered and they are still offering the free stuff even though it's past June 3rd) but still can't see a reason to get the 810. I do portrait, landscape and Astro. Yep for that kind of photography choosing the 750 over 810 is blasphemy, but you know what? I never had much use for religion. I'm going to love my red headed step child, no more love from the pros, just throw out your baby for the new girl in town. Think of it this way: metaphorically speaking the 750 is that ultra slim raver euro chick with small tits and a tiny ass that used to be considered the hottest thing on earth now everyone hates because she is skinny while they are not; the 810 is a giant ass big boobs and child bearing hips model everyone today wants to see as they don't want to be reminded they are fat. I don't care if this world now loves the fatty with a big ass and giant tits, I love my little raver girls and always will; 750 all the way. Tiny tits for the win.
      Edit: My comment about fat people was NOT at this guy but America in general. And for the record I went from 6'6" 220 ish most my life to a 305lb FAT ASS and then after 8 years decided to lost the weight. It took 1 year to drop 85 lbs and another half to drop down to my current 195 / 14 % bf. losing weight is easy despite my old notion it was impossible. Just do as the skinny girls: starve yourself, go for a lot of long walks, and starve yourself some more. Not a healthy way to lose weight? Being fat is more unhealthy. Again I don't care if other people are fat; I'm not their keeper and could give a crap. Me? I'm never going to be fat again. Everyone else can love the (fat imo) girls with big asses and tits; everyone else can love the nikon 810. Modern times have changed people's opinions on both the camera and the weight. Why would I want a camera w/o wifi built in (and fuck the 810 wifi add on at extra cost and bulk.) Why do I want an outdated af system? Why do I need tits bigger than my head? A handful is perfect.
      Yes an odd comparison of people's weight and cameras (810 has a bigger sensor, larger raw files, and more weight/learger frame size, so I guess the analogy DOES work) but more importantly how people's opinions about what's "hot", "good", or worth using change on a whim. I still use old lenses because they work and in some cases are better than lenses today. I don't know... someone prove me wrong on the 750 and do it quick before my order ships. I want to love my nikon because my sony made me hate photography, something I used to be passionate about, and that's sad. I don't want to hate my 750 and after a month of comparing the two cameras just can't get into the 810.
      It's not even the cost it's the features. However, $3500 for the upcoming 850 is too much. That leaves (in full frame) the 810 or 750. Feature wise, the 750 is the only option imo, AND $1000 less. Unless I have to, please don't make me "fuck a fat girl"; while they are said to be better in bed (because they have to be) I'm more of a visual guy myself and cool with the skinny girls just lying there like they don't give a crap about me pretending I don't exist. Just because everyone loves the 810 doesn't mean it's better. Look at the D5. Now that's a fat girl and one that's stupidly overpriced. D5: Like a 500 lb hooker missing teeth charging $5000 /hr; like the assholes who pay millions for a painting made by a primate that looks like it was done by a 3 year old in preschool.
      Sorry for the rant.

  • @Noah-ui1iu
    @Noah-ui1iu 7 років тому

    Ken, to say the autofocus is no where fast enough is not a valid statement when the D810 has the same autofocus system as the D4s which is amazing and I have shot sports, wildlife, and action with the D810. Obviously the D5 and D500 are better but, the D810 is no slouch. The only thing the D810 falls behind in is the 5fps burst rate.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  7 років тому +1

      its not a D3 slouch, but its got too high a miss rate for hardcore action.
      D810 falls behind big in high ISO noise too, but thats not an issue for its USE INTENT :)

      I just bought a 750 too. I think you will prefer having wifi in body, a better af system, better low light noise reduction, and while we have a damn aa filter in the 750 unlike the 810, (another inappropriate analogy because I'm on a roll tonight) sometimes wearing a condom is just more convenient (less mess, no worry of stds, no babies, etc) vs the better feeling you get w/o one.
      Sure I would love a condom-less 750 too, but we can just sharpen our images in photoshop/Lightroom if they are going to be used for prints larger than 10x12. Under that, you won't notice a difference unless you zoom in way too much. I hope you still love your 750 as mine won't arrive before the end of the month (it's out of stock) and hope I made the right choice.

    • @cecilsharps
      @cecilsharps 7 років тому +2

      the k1 is a competent camera. I have one and enjoy it. The big problem is lens selection. Even third party support is drying up. If you have a wide selection of m42 or old kmount lenses it is really fun to use. Having an awesome body but only having 2 choices for a modern autofocus portrait lens is a pain in the ass.
      The sensor may be the same but the software in the camera is different. I think it is called a/d conversion. It is subtle and nuanced but the images look different between the two bodies. I prefer nikon bodies output but went with the k1 because of price and my vintage glass collection.
      The k1 images look good, i'm happy with the camera but I wish I had spent the extra coin on a nikon.
