yes, however they have FLICKR reduction for that, but yes theres no getting around that , it is DEAD silent however, and has 2 settings, #2 is fast and for JPG only however
I bought a brand new D850 this week (its 2022) after using my D3300 since launch (2017), i rented the z6ii, z7ii and i didnt like them at all for birds in flight. i think this might just be the last camera id buy in the DSLR category now that everything's going mirrorless ! i have the 200-500 and the 50mm for now, man when i paired the D850 to the 200-500 i almost shit my pants! the difference of jump for me personally was huuuuuuuugeeeeeeeeeeeeeee in terms of AF performance (d500 is unavailable used or new here )! got the d850 for $2500 new (here in india it goes for well over $3000 even now because very few pieces are in stock ). now im going to get used FX lenses. starting with 24-120 F4 and 85m.

If you have a D850 and a D500 as back up and want to buy Wildlife lenses 2 of them to cover "everything" what would you pick? I think the 400mm 3.5 on the d850 (would focus peaking be of use on deer and slow moving animals?) On the D500 perhaps a 150-600 Tamron ? What would the ultimate wildlife set up be with 2 camera's and 2 lenses ;0

Hi Ken. Check this video of the comparison of the disassembled D600/D750/D800E/D810 and D850, starting especially at time 1:57: ua-cam.com/video/BkDk61bi50Y/v-deo.html Also, check this Nikon photo of the D800/800E chassis' magnesium parts: www.letsgodigital.org/en/31868/d800-body/ this is a well circulated image. The D810/810A, like the D750, went to a plastic mirror box: www.flickr.com/groups/1567431@N22/discuss/72157669494814066/ Nikon returned to magnesium in the D850. As you sometimes say: NIKON!
Thankyou Ken for your great video on the Nikon D850 where you do give your honest opinion. I have watched a number of videos regarding the D850 and the D5 and feel that the D850 will be my next DSLR Camera. I am absolutely not interested in video whatsoever as I am only interested in the photography side. As I have said to you in the past I have hardly used my Nikon D300 with just a 1718 Shutter Count at present, and I have had that from new in 2009. I have recently have started to use the D300 as I have picked up a couple more prime lenses. They are the Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.8G, and the Nikon AF-S 85mm 1.8G. I have found these lenses work well with all of my Nikon cameras. I did get my mint condition Nikon F5 from Japan, and I have found that camera to be a great camera to use. I Love my F5, but there is one problem here in Australia and that is 35mm film is terribly expensive to get developed here. 20 years ago one could get a 36 exposure film developed for around AUD$7 to AUD$10 and developed in one hour. It cost my daughter just over AUD$110 to get 3 x 36 and 1 x 24 exposure films developed. It took two weeks to get the films processed as the camera shop sent the films to their Sunshine Coast store. The Nikon D850 here in Australia is retailing for around AUD$3900 and as high as AUD$4600 depending on where you go for the camera body only. I do know that consumers here pay a 10% GST on all products. The Nikon D6 on the other hand is well over AUD$9000 and in some cases knocking on the AUD$10,000 mark.
Watched your part one review of the Nikon D850 and noted with interest your comment re: the XQD eject mechanism. I bought a D850 and the fourth time I went to insert the XQD card, the eject mechanism had broken. Now waiting for it to come back from Nikon repair facility. Also, in my brief time with the camera I found the files (@ ISO 3200, on camera bounce flash indoors w/24-70 f2.8) to be as noisy as the files from my D800E; same location and with the same settings and lens. I'm going to test that more fully as soon as I get my camera back. In the meantime - any thoughts or recommendations about that? Aside from those issues, I am quite impressed with the rest of the camera and it's features. REPLY 1
just my opinion ( dont take it seriously :p )i think it will help them sell the camera by having cheaper price in $US , but you actually pay more outside , kinda like a marketing strategy , having that kinda tech with the price lower than the mark 4 is quite huge. i think they want to beat canon and sony so bad , they put everything that they can on it to make it as the best cam as possible, well they deliver so far . . .
Hi Ken, I'm glad you enjoyed testing the D850 so much, it is so nice to hear you say positive stuff for a change, I'm getting the distinct impression this camera really is the best yet !, I 'm almost thinking that I might have to change over from Fujifilm, except that the XT2 is already a better camera than I'll ever be a Photographer! , and of course the huge cost of the best Nikon lenses. So when using the same lens, the same subject at the same distance, the 1 stop-crop of the D850 is exactly the same pixel density, given the same Aperture, same exposure the D 500 has to use 1 stop slower shutter speed ,or wider Aperture for the same image, therefore in whichever metric you use the D850 is one stop "better" across the board!. Richard
i always do camera / lens reviews FAIR, no matter what i think i general :) Ohhh gawd, dont dare consider leaving the XT2 :) do you really NEED the hardcore glass and FX sensor? :)
Interesting about the Magnesium lens mount foundation. I didn't know the D810 had a plastic one. I ordered the D850 at 19 minutes in. Thanks for the info. Waiting until it was in stock to order just wasn't working, haha.
Was under the impression that the EN-EL18b was needed with the grip to get the 9fps. Can you confirm that and is there a 3rd party charger for the EN-EL18b. Nikon wants $350 for the charger.
850 is still a bulky beast, but...D850...this is the 1st camera to exist (thinking.....yes yes) thats not only an awesome/Epic product camera /portrait/landscape but you also can run out the door and do hardcore photoj. and sports / action with it. ROFL !
Alright, listening to you and Steve Perry sitting in my back porch (kind of dumb) during the hurricane I Longwood Florida. Big bad Irma like the big bad Angry Photographer. You guys are going to convince me to buy the D850 but I love using my D500 with the 200/500 lens. Good review.
Hi Ken, the Nikon D850 sounds like the the perfect camera for my needs. Thanks for your rigorous and thorough review and another fine video. And I hope all is well with your home in Florida.
I'm 70 years old trying to get one of these. Can't promise you but after I get it I'm going to find out how to get you a little bit of something. Something in your pocket. Take care of yourself. Great content. You don't mean this guy on the internet😊 but I like you, I'm just kidding about the meanest guy😂
The A9 overheats? I took back to back 30 min 4k then took about 1500 photos in raw out in 90 degree heat but didn't have an issue. I thought it was the A7rii that had the computing power issue.
come here to just listen to your unique knowledgeable intelligent and well-informed way of explaining with nice funny words and interesting to follow what's coming next, love and respect to all
Ken, thx again for this review and providing clarity. A few weeks back you mentioned a Chinese charger for the D5 battery....do you maybe have a link? Thanks again m8!
Good review I bet you cant wait to do a review of a Mirror less Nikon (crop or full frame did you ever do anything with the Nikon 1 ),...if they every bring one out
Thanks for all the information. Appreciate your insight and details given throughout the review. I was going to pull the trigger on the D500 a couple of months ago since hearing the rumors of the high priced D850. Was very shocked at the $3300 price tag for a do it all camera. Will definitely save $1300 more for this camera. Great value for what it can do. Thanks again.
I went to Nikon's official store yesterday in Taipei and tested the D850 and I really enjoy its D750-like grip. The peaking is better than the Sony, and the silent mode in live view is definitely useful for anything except action photography. A big thumbs up for this winner of a camera. Again I would wait for some time to make sure there's no QC problem before spending my money - but I would look forward for the day I buy this camera.
850 is still a bulky beast, but...D850...this is the 1st camera to exist (thinking.....yes yes) thats not only an awesome product camera but also can run out the door and do hardcore photoj. and sports / action with. ROFL !
Yeah I thought all there recent cameras weren't note-worthy. I know some people that swear by using a 1300D, which is such a joke I have no idea why they even think that and I sent them to you and they were MIND BLOWN. I basically converted them. I'm also in Australia and the D850 Body is AUD$5400!!! Converting the price from USD goes to AUD$4100 so I have no clue where the extra AUD$1300 comes from.
First class review Mr Angry. I will have a D850 soon to pair up with my d500. Now I will have all bases covered including a back up camera. God Bless Doc Pearson
Great review, Ken. Am wondering whether to get the D850 or the Fuji GFX (landscapes and night sky, milky way shots)....Have read and watched too much (hence the indecision :), but you are so informative and entertaining! I just looove image quality...Many thanks. (And yes, we are getting stung down in Australia where the median price of the D850 is $5300 AUD) :(
D850...this is the 1st camera to exist (thinking.....yes yes) thats not only an awesome product camera but also can run out the door and do photoj. and sports / action with. ROFL !
Thanks again, Ken. The 850 it is! I think you are approaching legendary movie status in the photography world, by the way, judging by all of the comments here and the fact that we all hang on your every word, friend. Feel the love! :)
I suffer from NTS. Just bought a D500, am absolutely crazy about it, and am considering the D850 as my tax-time purchase. :) Thanks for the review Ken.
hi Ken, could you tell me about the D3x i heard you mention the d3s also. I'm waiting for my 850 and as another reviewer mentioned your name I'm going to buy a 85 1.4 voightlander, cant wait to get my hands on that sucker. nobody can tell me if ther is any difference between the black or silver top though and the black top costs more. thanks buddy and have a great holiday.
I actually have a D850 sitting on my desk, and figured you would give me a reason to not like it. Lord knows I can't come up with one on my own yet. It's a LOT more money than I want to spend on a camera and am looking for excuses to not like it, thinking a much cheaper camera body would be more sensible for the old AF Nikkor lenses I have sitting in the cabinet. But how can I turn down a "legendary" camera now? Looks like I'll be keeping it. :) BTW, the camera body I have been using prior to this with my Nikkor lenses was a Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro. So yeah, this is quite a leap for me.
How would you compare it to a D4s? I'm so torn... Used D4s, or D850... Need super fast AF, durability, tons of fast action (I already have a D750 that shoots like a dream for most of my stuff)...
ive owned several D4 cameras, at nearly or the same price its hands down the D850, further still the D850, have you seen the LINK???,........the D850 is built like a flagship camera inside
Hi Ken, I've watched your video for the past three years and the content is absolutely marvelous. I would like to ask you for an advice. Im considering to buy either the D850 and XT3, which one has the better image quality. Will the outstanding apsc sensor of xt3 be better than D850
Thanks for the info Ken! I'm mainly a wedding shooter, currently have the D750, D810 and older D3. I love the D3 but want to retire it. Had my eye on the D5 but after loads of video reviews and your review on your channel I'm sold on the D850. I know you love the D3 its just a personal choice for me to retire it. Has been an amazing camera and still is IMO. As much as the D5 would be sweet I simply cannot justify the extra $$$. Here is Australia it retails for $8999 where the D850 retails for $5299 (That's a massive price jump!) Sure the D5 would be great for a bit extra high end ISO but flash/off camera flash lighting is everything which the D850 will more than handle, with the added goodies included like the D5 has already, and more!
Ken Thank you for your time, in doing all that you do to help us all!!! I've taken may of your suggestions with no baleful results. We all owe you respect and appreciation for your honest reviews. What some may not realize that you purchase the equipment with your own money, getting nothing in return. We are so fortunate to be able to benefit from your efforts.
I finally got my D850 yesterday and I'm watching your review again. I like many of the qualities of this camera but love that there is no flex in the mounting area to the lenses. Wow! Nikon has made me smile with this addition. I wish they would have done the same build and included this in the D500. I guess $2k is not enough to do so. :( Thank you Ken for your review.
Sorry excuse my ignorance. Why isn't using a crop sensor camera for landscapes ideal? I love my xt2. Great review. Very tempted. Thought I'd left the dslr world. 📷❤️👍🏻😊
its a baby GFX...850 is still a bulky beast, but...D850...this is the 1st camera to exist (thinking.....yes yes) thats not only an awesome/Epic product camera /portrait/landscape but you also can run out the door and do hardcore photoj. and sports / action with it. ROFL !
I'm on the fence about upgrading my D800E's to the D850 and I'm curious about how useful focus peaking might be for astrophotography. Getting critical focus when pointed at stars or planets is hard enough but nebula are nearly impossible by eye so if focus peaking is of value for that it could make the difference for me. Presumably you'd need to really turn up the ISO to acquire focus and then turn it down once focus is obtained. But, I wonder if focus peaking with dark subjects like nebula would even work. I don't want to buy one to test this so I wonder if you could give this a shot with something like a 300 f/4.
Theoria Apophasis -- Seeing well enough to get infinity isn't so easy and when using telescopes the two methods most commonly used include the Bahtinov Mask or software to compute something like the FWHM (full width half max). These tools are not always available and are not part of any DSLR that I know of. These tools exist for a reason - getting focus in the dark isn't easy. My question is whether or not focus peaking on the D850 can be used in dark conditions.
Is the shutter latency like that of say the D3 where it snaps with no delay or is there a 100 or 200ms delay like the d600s etc (sorry I can't reference a d810 or d500 I don't own those)
And 6 years later.. the D850 is THE best DSLR ever made.
Great video!! I would like to see your hand sock puppet, “is it Sharp!!” Lol

Hi! What is the real-life shutter count expectancy of the Nikon D850 beyond its 200 000 designed shutter?
Who the HELL gives a 'thumbs down' for Ken's videos?!?!?!?!? Ken is the most straight and honest reviewer you can find.
peeps are haters
Theoria Apophasis the husband and wife! 😂
I know this is an old post, but just wondering if the D850 in cropped mode would be as responsive as the D500?
Your review makes me feel better about my choice,I’m coming from a D2H that I’ve have outgrown! I’m an amateur with good taste,Thanks!
2022 d850 or d4s? Gonna wait a bit on the mirrorless and want to still use my d glass

Have you tested whit Tamron lenses. Thinking about the trinity to Tamron?

Hi! Can d850 take the new CF express cards? Thanks

OMG Ingrid, thank you so very much!

Thinking of pairing this with 200-400 VR2 for big wildlife. Or do you think 300 2.8 is better?
Thanks to Irma I don't have electricity/ internet but I drove all miami looking for signal to see your review. You are the best!

The Nikon D850 dropped $500 and I was debating whether to get the Z8 what's your thoughts?

"Smother themselves with butter and honey, they're so happy." ...THAT phrase is almost better than the damn camera.
Any idea how the camera is doing FX 4K? (pixel binning, line skipping, down sampling, etc.)

Bravo, on a thorough review. I have the 850 on order. B&H haven't really announced when they will be available.

Hi Ken. The D800/800E have the magnesium mirror box also. It was abandoned in the D600/610/750/810/810A. The D850 returns to its use.
D800 didnt have a magnesium frontice nor magnesium shutter assy mounting plate, nor magnesium bottom plate
Hi Ken. Check this video of the comparison of the disassembled D600/D750/D800E/D810 and D850, starting especially at time 1:57: ua-cam.com/video/BkDk61bi50Y/v-deo.html
Also, check this Nikon photo of the D800/800E chassis' magnesium parts: www.letsgodigital.org/en/31868/d800-body/ this is a well circulated image.
The D810/810A, like the D750, went to a plastic mirror box: www.flickr.com/groups/1567431@N22/discuss/72157669494814066/
Nikon returned to magnesium in the D850.

Thanks for reviewing this camera , I'll be picking mine once nikon is all caught up with the pre-orders
seems everyone has one on preorder
Give em about 6 months to get caught up. The D800 was back-ordered when they came out too but I got one in a couple of months.
i'm in no hurry anyways
wow, how can they even do that
just my opinion ( dont take it seriously :p )i think it will help them sell the camera by having cheaper price in $US , but you actually pay more outside , kinda like a marketing strategy , having that kinda tech with the price lower than the mark 4 is quite huge. i think they want to beat canon and sony so bad , they put everything that they can on it to make it as the best cam as possible, well they deliver so far . .
Richard
i always do camera / lens reviews FAIR, no matter what i think i general :) Ohhh gawd, dont dare consider leaving the XT2 :)
do you really NEED the hardcore glass and FX sensor?
Nikon wants $350 for the charger.
tons of 3rd party charges on ebay, seen several...... yes you need it for 9FPS, thats even in the manual
best review of the revered D850 thus far as every others sounds amateurish...well done professor ken wheeler
Do I really need the d5 battery to perform all it's functions? I plan on getting the grip when available.
Thanks ken for your accurate testing and review. Helps a lot in saving time and making a decision. Great job 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
850 is still a bulky beast, but...D850...this is the 1st camera to exist
(thinking.....yes yes) thats not only an awesome/Epic product camera /portrait/landscape but
you also can run out the door and do hardcore photoj. and sports / action
with it.
Good review.
steve perry, teh wildlife guru
I thought it was the A7rii that had the computing power issue.
come here to just listen to your unique knowledgeable intelligent and well-informed way of explaining with nice funny words and interesting to follow what's coming next, love and respect to all
...and it does have two card slots.
yes, the d850 is a beast.
i wanted you to be so right about the Hybrid view finder, because i think it could have pushed the photography manufacturers to innovate even more.
it wasnt willed to be.....yet
Now they have a way to sucker you into the next upgrade.
Theoria Apophasis Thanks Again Ken,Nice vid :)
Ken, thx again for this review and providing clarity.
A few weeks back you mentioned a Chinese charger for the D5 battery....do you maybe have a link?
Thanks again m8!
its an off brand on ebay for the ENEL18 batts :) its $45 i recall
Good review I bet you cant wait to do a review of a Mirror less Nikon (crop or full frame did you ever do anything with the Nikon 1 ),...if they every bring one out
it wont ever beat the Fuji :)
Great review! Do you think a D500 and 200-500 5.6 will be fine for high school night football (low light) or stick with a 70-200 2.8?
dont forget the monopod. ROFL. but yes, would be awesome for same !
Would you also rate the D3s a legendary camera like the D3?
i did say that didnt i? D3/D3s....... D4/D4s .........lengendary beasts
Great review Ken, your the best honest channel out there, thanks pro 👍 so can you update your lens recommendations for the same
lens recommendations for this camera remain unchanged
Can you give us a link to your work? Ive googled you and cant find any of your images....
I went to Nikon's official store yesterday in Taipei and tested the D850 and I really enjoy its D750-like grip. The peaking is better than the Sony, and the silent mode in live view is definitely useful for anything except action photography. A big thumbs up for this winner of a camera. Again I would wait for some time to make sure there's no QC problem before spending my money - but I would look forward for the day I buy this camera.
well IM the one thats supposed to be the beta tester idiot....... yes, others can wait a couple months
850 is still a bulky beast, but...D850...this is the 1st camera to exist

ROFL !
What do you think about Canon cameras?
i havent messed with canon in ages, everyones upset at them recently, theyve spit out only duds
God Bless
Doc Pearson
Shooting hockey with the D850 this week, I may even be the first to shoot Hockey with the D850!!
get insurance on your camera, i did :P
Yep, all my equipment is insured Ken.
D3x is a good camera always priced waaaaaaaay too high , its likely the VERY WORST value nikon camera
Great review ken! Just a point to clarify..I think you need en-el18a/b and a bunch of d4s/d5 accessories to be able to get 9 fps..No???
charger....off brand on ebay for the ENEL18 batts :) its $45 i recall
batter is ENEL18a batter $150
$400 vertical grip
battery plug adapter $15
MB-B18 vertical grip US$399EN-EL18 battery US$135MH-26a fake charger......$50 +BL-5 battery chamber cover US$25
Just got a d850 body NEW for $2299.
BTW, the camera body I have been using prior to this with my Nikkor lenses was a Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro. So yeah, this is quite a leap for me.
One of my favorite videos you've done recently, well said!
How would you compare it to a D4s? I'm so torn... Used D4s, or D850... Need super fast AF, durability, tons of fast action (I already have a D750 that shoots like a dream for most of my stuff)...
ive owned several D4 cameras, at nearly or the same price its hands down the D850, further still the D850, have you seen the LINK???,........the D850 is built like a flagship camera inside
good video .. answered the most important questions .. so many great great cameras .. was on the fence on this vs the D800E .. now I know
Hi Ken, I've watched your video for the past three years and the content is absolutely marvelous. I would like to ask you for an advice. Im considering to buy either the D850 and XT3, which one has the better image quality. Will the outstanding apsc sensor of xt3 be better than D850
Appreciate having someone who actually knows what they're talking about reviewing cameras. At last.
Good review Ken! Keeping it real!! *fist bump*
Almost 4 years later. Still the best stills camera imho
"This is my review, not your review" classic!
Ken Thank you for your time, in doing all that you do to help us all!!! I've taken may of your suggestions with no baleful results. We all owe you respect and appreciation for your honest reviews. What some may not realize that you purchase the equipment with your own money, getting nothing in return. We are so fortunate to be able to benefit from your efforts.
anything that saves folks some time and cash
Ken, is the small and medium raw a 14bit file or 12.
hell yes! That's what I wanted to hear from you :DD
:( Thank you Ken for your review.
remember to get HUUUUGE cards, cause the files are soooo big
I have been using Sony G 128mb for 2 years now. I saw your new review on the cards that you made from Ding Darlin, Sanibel Island.
What af lenses would you recommend for 850. Just got mine.
for WHAT USE
Sorry excuse my ignorance. Why isn't using a crop sensor camera for landscapes ideal? I love my xt2. Great review. Very tempted. Thought I'd left the dslr world. 📷❤️👍🏻😊
You need wider lenses to get the same angle of view.
surely it cant be that!! wheres the problem buying a 10-24 instead of a 16-35??
wide lenses honey baaaby :)
i never said you cant do landscape with DX
haha thanks thought i was missing something then! hope your well buddy
hybrid viewfinder?
hehehe , nooo
Do you feel the D850 compares to the GFX?
its a baby GFX...850 is still a bulky beast, but...D850...this is the 1st camera to exist
(thinking.....yes yes) thats not only an awesome/Epic product camera /portrait/landscape but
you also can run out the door and do hardcore photoj. and sports / action

I don't want to buy one to test this so I wonder if you could give this a shot with something like a 300 f/4.
i wasnt trying leverage anyone to upgrade :) just have logical points for future consideration....nebulas, you dont need peaking for infinity :)
Charming, say aren't you in the wrong area of UA-cam...
You Legend Ken! Thank you for your amazing work. I am convinced it's been worth waiting for. Love my new d850! 😍🙏🏻
Is the shutter latency like that of say the D3 where it snaps with no delay or is there a 100 or 200ms delay like the d600s etc (sorry I can't reference a d810 or d500 I don't own those)
what are the file sizes for Raw, MRaw and Sraw?
52MB average raw :)
id never think of shooting med or small raw
Theoria Apophasis thank you! Guess I'll need a few hard drives if I'll replace my d700 with the d850 😂
