    Nothing against people going to gyms, the only thing that bugs me is how people over-share on social media about it. It's fine if you're sharing your progress (like a mirror photo if you've lost weight or gained muscle, etc), but it's another thing when people are just taking photos of equipment, or showing them using equipment. Idk, this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I'm a staunch believer of the addage "work hard in silence, let success make the noise". As a muso for instance, I don't feel the need to share my progress whenever I learn a tough part of a new song on the piano, or share some chord progression or sound design element I'm in the progress of creating when composing. I certainly don't take a photo of my piano or DAW to brag about how I'm "doing music stuff". I wait until I've learnt the whole piece or finished writing the whole song before I share anything to socials. Ultimately, I think if you truly believe in yourself, you should be content in observing your own achievements without needing other's validation every step of the way. Basically, wait until you have something worthwhile to share before sharing.

      While I fully agree with your position, I feel like this critique applies more broadly to sharing on social media in general. I find people oversharing their gym progress just as insufferable as people posting every meal they eat, every new pair of shoes they buy or the millionth pic of their cute dog or baby.

      @@hodder200 Totally, I'm with you on that too. I guess with the gym though (and any exercise that involves developing a skill or discipline), the validation-seeking element that comes with over-sharing can come across as a little more brazen, as posts about personal achievements are arguably more intrinsically linked to our sense of self-worth compared to say, sharing a photo of a lunch at a cafe. Not to say that the intent between these things are entirely different, just that from the perspective of others, the progress-centered posts can feel especially self indulgent.

      Yeah, I'll sometimes share the song I'm learning, but that's just out of enthusiasm about the music itself and a desire to share it with people.

      I can really relate to what you're saying and wanna add two thoughts:
      It might be helpful to regularly post the beginning of your journey for accountability-purposes so you'll stick to it better until it becomes a habit. When your posts start disappearing people might ask you why you stopped and then you get going, accountability. I post a pic of me going to the gym to a few friends as accountability partners and it pushes me a little extra to not skip a day without it.
      Also it might be interesting to see the progress people go through that would otherwise remain hidden if people only show the end results and share the beautiful things. As you said, if you only post the finished song people don't get to see the hours upon hours of practice and discipline that it takes to master such things.

    And also, it is an activity where no one ever gives it takes any gain from someone else's effort. You work out, you get fitter. That is refreshingly good for showing who is really making the effort, or something like that.

    I think that a stronger argument to convince gym haters that gyms are positive environments is to use the following factors:
    Gyms are a place where many people go to improve their mental health. Exercise intervention has roughly the same efficacy as pharmilogical depression treatments. And combined they are even better.
    Gyms are one of the most efficient way to protect your body against the risks of a sedentary lifestyle, which are associated with intellectual jobs.
    Lastly Gyms are a social melting pot so otherwise toxically, masculine men will be exposed to women where they otherwise may not be exposed in their life. This will help them observe, understand (more) and adapt to communicating with women. So while the gym may attract some 'meat heads,' their exposure to women will have a net positive societal effect. Assuming you believe that the general ability to communicate across gender is of societal benefit, which I do.

      You sound like you don't go the the gym. The gym bros definitely don't go near women and change thier cultures in my experience. It's literally why there is women only gyms.

    I'm not a gym goer but I'm also not anti-gym either. I see people who work out as people trying a form of self-improvement. I work out my brain with puzzles and reading, that is how I self-improve. people who do both I see as being the closest thing to superhuman as we can get in the real world.

    Feels great. Improves memory & maintains IQ - the ONLY scientifically affirmed practice = resistance & aerobic training. No regrets, as opposed to the alternative. Low energy/mood & jello-ness, we are basically living as astronauts & need resistance & whole body exertion.

    I think going to the gym is very nice because you build confidence and compete against yourself (Atleast I do and I'm still pretty young)

    After 23 years of going to the gym, I find it harder to enjoy because the younger generation is always on the phone - hogging the equipment. Wait until you’re out of your 20s. You’ll know what I mean.

    A gym could be virtuous if you focus on improving your performance, but in my experience, most people go to the gym to get a 6-pack or look a certain way, and I don't see virtue in that. Setting a goal of "squatting 100 kilo" is healthy. Setting a goal of "looking like Chris Hamthworth" is not healthy - even if the way of getting there is healthy (exercising).
    There are other ways of exercising, and other branch of gyms which don't involve yourself looking in a mirror, and don't have outward appearance as a goal.
    Martial Arts, Yoga, Aerobics, Climbing. These are all examples of stuff where you have the same health (physical/mental) benefits as lifting weights but without the unhealthy want of looking a certain way.

    I think what you saying is the right thing.
    Doing sports not just going to gym is a good think to do , you will be healthier happier and more responsible.
    I don't understand how can anyone be against sports ?!.
    Even just few walking can help your cardiac activity which improves your mental health.
    No wonder how someone hates sports or gym always been sad , lonely and depressed.
    It's not something that we don't need or like unnecessary activity.
    It's our life , our health ...

      Not really. If it makes your life uncomfortable, you're doing it wrong. When I started exercising, my period became regulated and less painful, my mental health took a remarkable improvement, my sleep schedule instantly tidied itself up and I experienced more energy and vigour. If exercise hurts you, then I think you should maybe tone it all down.

      @@killahasbigrpk8711 unless one has health issues, "junk food" isn't really that bad for you. Eating healthy for most people does include "junk food" in moderation. You're not making any sacrifices here unless you have health issues or a deep addiction.

      @@theminisimmer I agree, I still eat a pizza or a burger every now and then, but I’d still argue it is sacrificing comfort. A lot of people feel intimidated by the gym and feel insecure about themselves. It takes a lot of effort to get yourself in the gym for the first time.

    I still think if you want to work out it'd be better to plant a tree someone else will sit under one day while you work on yourself, but if you'd rather socialize than Idk fix some old ladies house or something have at it.

    Gym culture clashes with the modern view that everybody must find a victim class to fit into or they are an oppressor, not very on brand anymore unfortunately.
