  • The Alenia C-27J Spartan is a medium-sized military transport aircraft developed and manufactured by Alenia Aermacchi. It is an advanced derivative of Alenia Aeronautica's earlier G.222 (C-27A Spartan in U.S. service), equipped with the engines and various other systems also used on the larger Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules. In addition to the standard transport configuration, specialized variants of the C-27J have been developed for electronic warfare and ground-attack missions.
In 2007, the C-27J was selected as the Joint Cargo Aircraft (JCA) for the United States military; these were produced in an international teaming arrangement under which L-3 Communications served as the prime contractor. In 2012, the United States Air Force (USAF) elected to retire the C-27J after only a short service life due to budget cuts; they were later reassigned to the U.S. Coast Guard and United States Special Operations Command. The C-27J has also been ordered by the military air units of Australia, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Mexico, Morocco, Romania, Peru, and Slovakia.
On 26 January 2012, the Department of Defense announced plans to retire all 38 USAF C-27Js on order due to excess intratheater airlift capacity and budgetary pressures; its duties are to be met by the C-130. In February 2012, Alenia warned that it would not provide support for C-27Js resold by the US to international customers in competition with future orders. On 23 March 2012, the USAF announced the C-27J's retirement in fiscal year 2013 after determining other program's budgetary needs and requirement changes for a new Pacific strategy. The cut was opposed by the Air National Guard and by various legislators.
In July 2012 the USAF suspended flight operations following a flight control system failure. By 2013, newly built C-27Js were being sent directly to the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base boneyard. The USAF spent $567 million on 21 C-27Js since 2007, with 16 delivered by the end of September 2013; 12 had been taken out of service while a further five were to be built by April 2014 as they were too near completion to be worth cancelling. Budget cuts motivated the divesture; a C-27J allegedly costs $308 million over its lifespan in comparison with a C-130's $213 million 25-year lifespan cost.

What pisses me off is this aircraft was perfect for what the Army wanted. But inter service rivalry, USAF stepped in and forced US Army to give up most of its fixed wing aircraft. US Army is allowed to only operate aircraft based on civilian models. USAF seized aircraft, then retired them saying they were too expensive to operate which is BS when you consider the C-27 shares 80% commonality with C-130 (Lockheed helped Alenia design the C-27) including using the exact same engine as the C-130. USAF said they could do same job with C-130 which is more BS because the C-27J was designed specifically to be a STOL aircraft able to gt in and out of places too small for a C-130 while carrying palatalized cargo. USAF then later says the C-130 cant do the job because the strips are too small. NO, really? The order I think was for 38 aircraft total which wound up going to US Coast Guard and SOCOM which likes the aircrafts ability to get in and out of small spaces, has aerial refueling, and they have developed a gunship version which is almost a mini AC-130.

Just like during Nam with the Caribou and Mohawk. Pretty sad the Army can't have STOL cargo planes or light attack prop driven aircraft.
The need is there. The Air Force won't cooperate and it's the troops who ultimately pay the price. I just wonder how many lives could have been saved and dollars that didn't need to be spent.
It's too stupid for words but nice to see the Marines get their own air force. They don't need to beg for support.
The bottom line is speed kills. So it's pretty sad to see how ineffective our assault troops are and now the Army is looking at buying expensive hybrid copters when investing into STOL fixed wing would do just fine.

This is a excellent platform for the Army. Hopefully as time goes on these mini 130s will be put to good use. Beurocracy is found not only in politics right? Time will prove the c27 to be a great buy .

They needed to transfer the full lot to the National Guard like they said they would. There is a need for the type of lift that it can provide cost wise for the State. Sadly, it was not to be, and the program got yanked from the units that were expecting to get them. It was a fantastic performer and did well in AFG. =(

How does it cost over 308 million over its lifespan. That is insanity.

Sorry but the C27J spartan has had a redundant multiple Fly by Wire system for at least 20 years or since the last release of the G222, it also has a double hydraulic electro-rescue system, like all military machines, being subject to war triggers for any shots must be able to fly and return to the base even with serious damage to the avionics!
