Joel, wasnt a good person, no one survives during the apocalypse and ends up a good person. But, he was a good father, and at least he recognized, as much as Ellie wished to sacrifice herself, that because the world care more about a cure, than someone as amazing and special as Ellie, the world didnt deserve her sacrifice. And he was ok with that, even if it meant her finding out and never seeing her again. "I would do it, all over again." I wasnt happy that he died in the beginning, though i knew he probably wouldnt make it till the end. But looking at his death, edited with all the close calls he had, man, he went through a lot, survived solely for Ellie's sake. He should have died a hundred times before even making it to the fireflies. As, gruesome as it was, at least he doesnt have to struggle anymore, and at least he died knowing Ellie would be safe without him, and that she was willing to try and forgive him, as im sure every moment he struggled to forgive himself. Theres a moment in the capsule, that i didnt notice when i was first playing, when he hands her the cassette; he looks at her while she putting it in, all the while, his smile slowly morphs to, a more disdained look, but not for Ellie. In that moment, before it turns back to Ellie, it looks like hes thinking about himself, and what he did, and how he knows he is forever making up for what he took from her, and coming to terms with all the suffering being worth this amazing little girl..

Joel was a true lead character, he killed everyone to save Ellie and he was never doubtful of himself or unsure about saving her, while Ellie was doubtful and regretting avenging her father who died for her and never got forgiveness or redemtion. I'm sorry but Ellie is just a plain asshole, She wouldn't even go on this revenge journey if she had gotten the chance to forgive him and escape from guilt.
