How to Play: Firth of Fifth Piano Intro
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 кві 2020
- In this video, I dissect the piano intro from "Firth of Fifth" by Genesis, off their 1973 record Selling England by the Pound. I'll go into detail about the many odd time signatures that make up this intro, as well as break down each section into what the left hand and right hand are doing.

Absolutely the best Firth of Fifth tutorial on UA-cam. Thank you.
Incredible, this deserves way more views than it has.
Thank you! Share it with your friends!
👍
The way you teach is amazing, it makes it much easier to grasp all the subtleties of this beautiful piece
Love this piece of music.
This is amazing!!! Such talent, well done
Amazing! The best Genesis album!!! Genesis with Peter Gabriel is my favorite!
Simply...perfect💚
Nice job, excellent! and thanks for the pdf. I’ll try my best
Great video, always nice to see someone tackle this piece!!! As for the complex time signatures, the intro is principally a mixed meter of 13/16 and 15/16. It opens in a 2/4 and goes to 16/16, before returning to 2/4 and then switching in between 13/16 and 15/16 with an occasional return to 2/4 throughout the rest of the intro. 4/4 (outside of the first 16/16 bar which is identical in length to 4/4), 6/8, 7/8 don't appear in the intro, and I'd have to listen again to see if there's a spot that 21/8 might've sneaked past.
Outside of that and a couple tonal errors, this is a phenomenal dissection of one of my favourite piano compositions out there. Very, very well done!!
Absolutely great job and a fabulous lesson....Thanks
Thanks! Appreciate it!
Brilliant mate. Tony Banks is a genius and so are you
thanks for the introduction ... i hope some day get to play it,, the song is beauty.
You’re my hero man!
Amazing explanation. Thank you so much. Maybe one day I'll be able to play it
Well, this young guy obviously is a very schooled musician. He would have to be to copy by ear, transcribe, explain the odd time signatures, not to mention play this so well. The lesson is so good you almost are forced to overlook the beautiful playing. I am a guitarist but play keyboard and will try to learn this piece as I love Genesis. Looks like about one year's work as this ain't Beautiful Dreamer LOL. Masterful job and very generous to provide the PDF transcription. Bravo.
Thanks for sharing @ryan slatko..
I will try it...
I have been working on this piece for more than 2 years, your video will help a lot!!! Thanks for sharing
20 on and off for me 😱😱
I know the feeling. No classical training, so I guess there's no chance in hell I'll ever be able to play this... but I'm not giving up yet!
Excellent job. Thanks.
Thanks!
I'm shook
This is amazing! Please post videos like this one! Hopefully from Genesis!
thanks Ryan greetings from Venezuela
Please do the Cinema Show ! One of the best melodires I´ve heard!!!! The finale is outstanding!!! Pure light!!!

Exelente! ....
Y gracias por la partitura
Saludos desde Monterrey México 👍
Thanks very much.
thanks friend!! years ago I tried to get it by ear and thanks to you I have succeeded
Thank you so much for the lesson! I started studying it right now, your video is very clear 💜
Thank You
Fantastic , very clear and easy to learn if you practice 4 to 5 hours a day . Kkkkkkk
Check out my 15 year old grandson, Jonas Heidebrecht’s version, including all the other instruments he plays.
In 26th bar you should play B flat major not minor (D, not D flat), both hands, in 37th bar the 3rd note is B flat, not D flat, the last note is a D, not a D flat, and in the 39th bar the 2nd note is octave of the 1st E, so whole tone lower than the F# from your transcription.
Thank you for teaching video, this is the first I came across 🙂
U mean the 3rd note in the 37th bar, right? Cuz the 2nd note is an Ab
@@renatolimatonini2259 Thanks for spotting, yes, you are right, and the last note of this (37th) bar is also wrong. (Updated my comment).
Is not only classic music...is a lot of folk rythms...7/8...13/8...arghhhh
Nice job overall. I did catch a few things that I thought were incorrect, though (if you're going for accuracy against the original, anyway). The first major thing is that the octave A you have in the left hand at 5:39 should be an octave F# below it. There are a few other things toward the end that sounded a little different from the original to me as well. You can compare against what I did here, for reference:

Hope this helps. Nice job, though, on what is not an easy thing to transcribe, or to play. 😎👍
Thank you so much, Ryan. Your tutorial is one of the best out there on youtube! Please could you also teach us how to play Undertow by Genesis?
You could try ua-cam.com/video/64qsT9vpmes/v-deo.html ;)
Waw! Guau!
At 7:54 how do you work the fingering so as to not cross fingers between left and right hands on that G#? Tried watching in slow motion, it seems to me that in the last chord of the 23rd measure u play the G# of the left hand using your pinky right. Is that right?
Luckily I don‘t have to count, as this has been my most-heard piece of piano music for 50 years. It‘s stored in my ROM, so to speak.
Thanks for your tutorial anyway, albeit a few tones sound a bit unfamiliar to me.
Excellent!!! How much time take to learn it? Thanks!
Minute 4:24 there is a A note on the right hand that should be set as natural after the sharp some step before.... Maybe. Let me know... Thanks
Hey mate. Im trying to play this intro. I Just about finished learning The 'A' section, but I am still playing it too slow. Would you advise me to keep working in the A section till it is perfect or should I start the B section already and then try to get them all together up to speed?
If the A section is not coming easy, could be good to just move on for now and come back later. Trust that in time it will come to you, just have to let it marinate!
This is incredible. I always loved this song but I fear I can never play it because I have the hand size of a fifth grader... :(
The size of a firth of fifth grader 😊
@@tronlady1 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awsome, congrats!
But I think you should name Tony Banks ... not " you know"
