Alright folks, you asked for it, and here it is! This is one of the most requested songs we've gotten from y'all since starting this series. And I totally get why. This song is a freaking BANGER. It's smart and complex... yes simple and accessible. It's throwback and nostalgic... yet undeniably fresh and modern. It's an infuriatingly well crafted marriage of opposites, and it FEELS so freaking good. This was one of those songs where halfway through I stopped trying to transcribe the chords and just had to sit back and let it wash over me. What a great song. I'm so impressed with Bruno and Paak. It really bums me out when people say things like, "There's no more good music anymore. All the modern stuff is garbage." I simply disagree. There's SO MUCH good music being made, RIGHT NOW. Don't forget -- when the Beatles first started writing songs, there were reporters throwing them under the bus saying "oh they're just copying Elvis and Little Richard. They've got nothing new to say." There is often an oppositional force to legends, as they're becoming legends. And I think that's what's happening to Bruno in particular right now -- as much credit as he's getting, I don't think he's getting the recognition with respect to the craft of songwriting that I think will ink him a place in history books. I think he's going to go down in history as a great songwriter and melodist. And in this episode, we forget about the haters and just dive deep into what makes this song special. Hope you enjoy it!
If you know so much making your own record breaking song stfu 👿🤔🌍
Well written! You don't always have to make it, to know what's good, great in this song's case. Thanks for group reaction!
Video idea. I know who the roots are but you all should tell us from your perspective. Love the videos
React to Skate too!
So were all your students smiling from ear to ear when they heard the song?
I use this song in the music theory class I teach. It's got everything. Pedal point bass, key change with and without pivot chords, secondary dominants, altered dominants, parallel movement, you name it. SO GOOD!
Pop music has been incredibly uncreative as of late! This song is a breath of fresh air. It sent shivers down my spine the first time I heard it...The modulations...The backing vocals. The song is just too good!
You cant say that about most modern pop songs!
I would love to hear lectures on this song
@@Khaled91 I know looking at the charts can be a little disheartening at times, but there is always amazing pop to be found, even if it's less pop-ular! The Future Nostalgia album by Dua Lipa, Isolation by Kali Uchis, Halsey's new album with Trent and Atticus from NIN, hell check out some new Jacob Collier or WILLOW!
@@sp0ngeb00b7 agreed. Alot of good music if you know where to look. Like alot of people didn't even know about anderson paak before.
This is old school, I'm 74 my granddaughter turned me on to Bruno timeless
“Julio, get the stretch” is a throwback to Morris Day’s stage persona calling for his valet, Jerome.
Don't sleep on Anderson.Paak's contributions and his signature. You guys gotta check out more of him because I feel like you gotta dig deeper into his musical accomplishments, there's a reason he choose Bruno to make this band.
IMHO, this song is a perfect amalgamation of Motown soul and Hip-Hop. The lyrics are classic of descriptive actions, onomatopoeias, slang. Think of Missy or Miguel. It's very AAVE. Prior to Anderson, most of Bruno's sound was like a pop pantomime of soul. Anderson actually brings in the feel of soul. Sometimes the right partner allows us to grow and blossom, gives you new language for a feeling or way to express. I'm still working through all of my thoughts on their pairing...
I'm getting tired of the bruno praise. This is a paak song 99% and those other "bruno" songs are mark ronson songs. Bruno has put out so many shit songs on his own, without ronson and paak he wouldn't be where he's at now
@@hans33sw Thank you for mentioning Mark Ronson who's been doing the Neo-Motown thing since Amy Winehouse!
@@hans33sw Bless your heart. First, let's examine your statement that those other "bruno" songs are mark ronson songs by looking at their collaboration on Mark's album Uptown Special from 2015.
Track 3 -- Feel Right featuring Mystikal credits
Mark -- writer, producer, guitar
Bruno -- writer, producer, backing vocals, music video director
Track 4 -- Uptown Funk featuring Bruno Mars credits
Mark -- writer, producer, guitar
Bruno -- writer, producer, vocals, drums, music video director
Bruno's backing band the Hooligans provided a lot
of the remaining instrumentation (keys, bass, horns, etc)
As you can see Bruno more than carried his own weight and the only reason it is a "Mark Ronson" song is because it was on his album. There has been a lot of speculation that Uptown Funk could have been even bigger had it been released on a Bruno Mars' album. Per Mark Ronson Uptown Funk began when he went to Bruno's studio in LA with Jeff Bhasker. Bruno was on drums, Jeff on synthesizer, and Mark on bass. It took them over a year to finish the song since Bruno was on tour and they followed him to Brooklyn, Memphis, London, Toronto, Vancouver, etc to record. It was Bruno who came up with the bass line and drum fills.
FYI -- Jeff first began writing songs with Bruno in 2005 and they played cover songs in a three-piece band (Bruno -- vocals/guitar, Bruno's brother Eric Hernandez on drums, and Jeff on keys) around LA before he left to play keys for Kanye West. Bruno's first successes in LA were as a songwriter/producer for other artists before he released his first studio album.
As for your assertion that Leave The Door Open is 99% a .Paak song is laughable. Let's look at their contributions:
Bruno -- writer, producer, vocals, guitar, congas, music video director
Anderson -- writer, vocals, drums
As for the reasons the musicians in this video love LTDO, please share a .Paak song(s) that demonstrates those characteristics. Here is a list to help you: key change/modulations, complex and unexpected chord progressions, call and response, memorable melodies and composition, fun/playful lyrics, backing vocal harmonies, etc. Bruno's catalog includes over 230 songs so it isn't hard to find examples of these characteristics. And vocally Andy can't touch Bruno. He just doesn't have the range and versatility.
Then there is your statement that without ronson and paak he wouldn't be where he's at now. Let's look at a few facts:
1) The first, and so far, only artist certified by the Recording Industry Association of America with 5 diamond singles. The next closest artists have 3. Bruno also has over 20 platinum and multi-platinum singles and 3 multi-platinum albums. Mark Ronson, along with the diamond single he shares with Bruno, has 2 platinum singles and a platinum album. Anderson .Paak, along with the multi-platinum single he shares with Bruno, has 3 gold singles and a gold album.
2) Pollstar, trade publication for the concert and live music industry, named Bruno Mars the Hip-hop/R&B touring artist of the decade. As a headliner he has sold over $600 million in ticket sales. Anderson has sold $13.5 million as a headliner. There is also the fact that Bruno was the youngest headliner in history for the 2014 Super Bowl half-time show after just 2 studio albums and 19 songs.
3) As for the Grammys let's look at the "Big Four" general categories.
Album of the Year: Bruno -- 3 nominations, 2 wins Mark -- 1 nomination Anderson -- N/A
Record of the Year: Bruno -- 6 nominations, 2 wins, 1 pending Mark -- 3 nominations, 2 wins Anderson -- 1 pending
Song of the Year: Bruno -- 3 nominations, 1 win, 1 pending Mark -- 1 nomination Anderson -- 1 pending
Best New Artist: Bruno -- N/A Mark -- N/A Anderson -- 1 nomination
Bruno also has a couple of other Grammy distinctions. First male artist to win both an r&b and pop best album. First male artist to win Record of the Year and Song of the Year for two different songs from the same album. One year he had 2 Record of the Year nominations for writing/producing songs for 2 different artists.
@@hans33sw UR SO FUNNY :D
I love that anderson.paak played the drums in a single sitting. Did it once and took that straight to record.
I love that you added recommendations in the beginning - it's awesome to learn about new artists and get some music inspiration - thanks for that and please keep that for the next episodes 🙏
Thank you! We love getting your feedback!!!
I must suggest 2 great bands that I love and feel they are the present and future of nu jazz-funk-soul: Molass and Sample Kulture. Listen for yourselves guys!
This ultimately lead me to even more joy than the song
@@DeadWaxShow Really great recommendations! How about a playlist somewhere (Blog, Website, Spotify...)? That'd be awesome!
Yesss. Added them to my music library recommendations.
I'm an old drummer who learned to play by ear. The educational bits are great for those of us who say things like, "You know when they do that thing?" :D Thanks!
Hey guys, great reaction with heavy praise for Bruno Mars, however you do need to do more homework on Anderson .Paak. If you listen to his work, you will know his contribution to both Silk Sonic songs. Bruno and Anderson are super talented!
Might've come down to editing but yeah. I think it's hard to really bring 4 people into a deep dive of a song without getting distracted and losing other bits of input. It's not like Poliphonic who is writing a script and on a mission to break down a specific piece.
We're in the early parts of this channel and I'm quite interested to see where it goes but I think pure reaction videos simply can't go as in depth without a lot of cutting away from the actual 'reaction' bit of the video
I don't think they mentioned Bootsy Collins being on the project either which is wild
Yeah, Anderson .Paak is his own empire, it is definitely not all Mars. Wake up ppl!
Yeah, A.P's percussion skills are out front in these songs. You can hear the amazing fills and smoothness he brings to this partnership. He builds to key and phrase changes masterfully.
I hear it more like Philly soul (Thom Bell, Stylistics, Spinners) than LA Motown! Though there's certainly a lot of overlap
Yes!
Wow, it seems like your channel just came out of nowhere, and I couldn't be happier! I scour youtube for quality discussions on music - things that will contain a little theory, a little history, a little production talk, and most importantly PASSION for great songs. Rick Beato is of course a great example, but I love this roundtable type discussion, and the different bits of expertise coming together. THANK YOU!! Much love
WOW! Yes totally agree! I love to watch/ listen to Rick dissect, explain, contrast & compare songs, but this "group round table" style is full of so much goodness too! I just stumbled upon this group too! Love it. Love all the intricate explanation & references that really helps drive points home and/or provides clarity. 😉
All of Hawai'i is so proud of Bruno... 'leave the door open' and 'skate' are so needed right now... these songs prove that the lyrics of a song do not need to have vulgarity to be successful...
Oh no...
Skate has some swear words...
What do I do? Should I tell them?
Jokes aside, that duo is amazing, bringing that mix of 70's soul and Stax/Motown/Atlantic.
I absolutely adore Leave the Door Open, but.. it is describing a booty call 😊
Anderson.Paak is criminally underrated!
He is insanely talented, it feels like y'all are sleeping on him.
Silk Sonic brings a smile to the world!
Holy shit. Your content is amazing! Instant sub!
Thanks Loic!
So sick! I'd actually love to see you all react to the .Paak Tiny Desk Concert too some day :-) Just so I can listen to it again!
Yessss, they'd love that!!
You should listen to the live Grammy, BET, and iHEART Radio performances with the various improvs.
I'd 1000% recommend you guys check out Anderson Paak's Tiny Desk concert! I mean c'mon, not only are they like some of the best musical productions on UA-cam, but his includes improv, you get to listen to his amazing raspy voice way more, along with his awesome live drumming AND checking out a good selection of his songs!
That's how i discoverd him way before Silksonics came out.... TD is such a gold mine of new talents as well as old talents in a new spin...
@@musamusashi I got into him shortly before Silk Sonic was announced on my own hip hop journey, and am also a long term Bruno fan. Cannot wait for the album, imagine having Bootsy Collins’ blessing?! Also whenever an artist does a Tiny Desk, 9 times out of 10 it instantly shoots up as one of their best performances haha!
I think the notion that Silk Sonic could bring about an evolution in pop music comes not just from the fact that Leave The Door Open was such a huge smash hit, but that it made practically everyone feel so damn good. I would like to think that a lot of pop producers - and artists - sat up and realized that ”yeah, this is something we’ve been missing for a very long time”.
But of course you’re right, it remains a hope… :)
Thanks for an excellent video.
I'm hoping current pop musicians will inject some of this mojo and creativity into what their doing. Key changes, modulations and even the lyrics. They are begging and pleading, sexy, not sleezy: think Barry White and Marvin Gaye, not using foul language to convey that vibe.
@@techdad5606 Agreed.
you should do some other Anderson .Paak songs, he's getting overshadowed by Bruno Mars here but he's an incredible artist in his own right! 'Lockdown' from last year was brilliant
Love the Johnny "Guitar" Watson tremolo picking down the string in the intro.
MOONCHILD ARE EVERYTHING!!!! Also...I really appreciate y'all using the clip from the Jacksons movie to drive that "Never Can Say Goodbye" point home.
I feel like this is so Bruno Mars-biased kind of reaction. Wish people gave as much attention, homage, and credit to Anderson .Paak because that dude's discography is out of this world, arguably having a better discography than Bruno in terms of quality in my opinion. Malibu is one of the greatest albums ever. His work in NxWorries is basically perfection too.
Absolutely agree! Dude is extremely versatile.
Oh ventura is fucking off the charts for me
His work with NxWorries is just vocals though, right? Kind of weird to highlight that when his Breezy Lovejoy shit was more impressive in that sense. Just sayin
i fucking love Yes Lawd!
If there is a chance of anyone touching some level of what Prince was able to do in the last generation it’s Anderson P. The musicianship, vocals and aura of cool vibe is all there. Not sure anyone will have the drive and musical genius of Prince but Anderson is just getting started.
for an amateur musician like me I cannot emphasize enough how much I LOVE the little explanation things in between. I do not know any theory and this is the best informative entertainment. Thank you so much!
.Paak rhymes with back… and he makes straight 🔥 all the time. Everyone that doesn’t know, do a deep dive and you’ll be hooked 🙌
This reaction is gold and we want Skate from Silk Sonic too
I would direct you to the Bee Gees “Tragedy” for that foot drum/ peddle point bass intro! It’s a constant in the beginning of that song!
NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN!
"Julio! Get the stretch!" has to be my favorite lyric to just SHOUT, ever. Even if im not singing out loud, that's the one I say, everytime, always.
Effing brilliant (again)! I am LOVING this series! Jack you keep it moving beautifully and informatively...and every single time, you and Ryan bring it home (no wonder you two are BFFS is what I'm saying). You keep it real, you keep it informative in ways that surprise and delight me, so that I feel a part of the discovery...how fresh is that?? Effing GOOD. This spin around on Bruno Mars is GOLDEN. So happy to have heard all 4 of you today and this gives me so much to ponder until I watch again...indebted to the beat, I'm hanging on for dear life. Thank you all - great show!
I'm not a musician but I love listening to these guys break the song down. Glad I found this channel!
Great review to a great song! I will add that this felt Bruno biased. Anderson added more to the song that you folks gave him credit for. If you look at his history, you'll find his signature tone. It's evident in this song & is part of the backbone of how well this tune sounds.
That whole album is great, in every aspect.
I LIKE THE OPENING SEGMENT. THAT SHOULD BE A STANDALONE SHOW! I never heard ANY of those acts you guys recommended, and they all seemed interesting to me
Definitely react to Paaks Tiny Desk Concert!!
Good vibes with this reaction too!
I got hooked on this instantly!! I'm pretty sure your "reaction" carried on way beyond this 18 minutes and I would love to hear it all!!! Love this song, it was the best possible mood swing after the long miserable winter!!! Can't wait to see what you'll be reacting to next!!!
Your best vídeo so far (beyond the awesome song)
Thanks for this - great to understand the "whys" of why I like the feel of this tune :)
The dot in .Paak is because he wants people to pay attention to the little details.
Edit: Whoops, was a UA-cam andy that didn't watch through before commenting
I think when people have so much fun making something, that comes across in their output. And if those people happen to be world-class at their craft... You get Silk Sonic.
10:22 "he's singing to us, not at us"
YES! I've watched two live performances of this song and I wondered why that part drew me in so much.
so reminiscent of those classic 70s songs - The Stylistics "Betcha by Golly Wow" or Blue Magic "Sideshow" etc. Bruno/Anderson are awesome in creating this new image and "new" sound. Your channel and all the pro musicians in the discussion are so awesome in breaking down the songs for us mere mortals and I love how fun and educational it is.
That's some Philly Soul if I've ever heard it. Sounds more Thom Bell/Gamble & Huff than Motown to me.
And the Discord question...sigh...not all vintage soul is Motown people!!! Al Green (Memphis/Hi), Otis Redding (Stax), and real Motown (Tamla label), to name a few, all have different production, arrangement styles.
So far the best reaction in this whole series has been when those drums kick in off the bat and everyone starts vibing.
You guys are soooo awesome!! I have learned so much about music with your commentary and reactions to Silk Sonic!!!
I hope old school will continue to get up!! It’s beautiful music and needs to be recognized??
Real singers, instruments, and sounds that melody and balance!! Above all you can sing along!!! 🎶🎶🎶🎤🎤🎤🎤💕💕💕💕
I liked "Leave the Door Open" when it was on the radio, but when I played it alone with headphones, it's just... MMM. It's like slowly savoring a nice piece of chocolate in audio form.
“leave the door open”…Reminds of “The Delfonics” from the 70s.
A big reason this song is so great is that it's a straight 70's groove (which is fantastic) with a modern twist. That generation produced some of the absolute best music ever imho
Came here after saw Bruno’s live concert!!! Gladly there’s this clip telling me why he’s GOOD~~😍
Again you guys uncover stuff that makes me listen to these songs in a different way. So you are actually adding to my enjoyment of music soooo much. A huge thank-you for that. Awesome stuff. And you feature a fellow Aussie as well.
You mentioned Moonchild, therefore you get my sub. Good grief I love them. ❤
Great stuff. Love hearing musicians break things down like this. Silk Sonic is the best thing to happen to mainstream music in a long time.
I sgree with mr 74 and i will be 81 December 7th. I have been a music fanatic since i was 5 years old. I love Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak. I will never tire of great artists who still have meanings in their songs!
Silk Sonic is so smooth that the coefficient of friction of the sound going into your ears is actually a negative number
Just discovered this, and THIS is what I wanted 2 years ago after several months of exploring music on UA-cam. "React" is the pull-word, "Professional Musicians" is what keeps me here.
I love that the Jackson 5 clip you used is from a biopic 😂
you all are awesome, and just love your reaction to this amazing song. It is a gift the world needed!!!
I recently discovered this channel, and it’s immediately become my favorite!
Woooooo welcome Nolan!
Man you’re not kidding. The kick is upfront in the mix. I also love .s groove in the snare - hat are so well recorded . Sounds so Motown …
The quality & editing of this video is BEYOND impressive
They built this song extremely well… Theatrically Epic!!
I LOVE the quick bit about artists to check out at the start. I'm always looking for new stuff and youtube and spotify on their own are just walls of the same. Which is probably my fault but here we are. Please keep this bit up!
Please react to Dirty Loops: Work Shit Out! It's an entire JOURNEY of its own by a cool swedish jazzy fusion group that has magnificent technical abilities and great synergy.
I freaking love this format!
Keep it uuuuup
Someone needs to make a series of videos reacting to these videos.
Now THAT I would watch :)
Yo dawg, I heard you liked reaction videos...
i like some reaction vids...but, THIS...more analysis from legit musicians vids is something that I need more of.
and, guys...i've been watching and loving your music videos...how come y'all just got to this vid NOW...?? lol
please, do one for their new tune, Skate, soon...
thanks. LOVE it. 🙏
Clearly a lot of work went into this video! Thank you!
When i first heard some friends in a local r&b cover band do this song, having never heard it before i immediately thought to myself....how is it possible that I’ve never heard this old r&b song !!! Shout out to KG Express~~Cape Cod Massachusetts !!!
I love this channel, the knowledge all y'all bring is blowing my mind
Easily my favorite channel on UA-cam already. Keep it up!!
Love it - just the right mix of everything!
And thanks for the suggested musicians - I'm now listening to Martha Marlow and loving her, too
Blown away from the production quality of this video
we need a Bruno mars skate reaction
Great job. I'd love to hear you guys analyze and review Skate and compare it to Leave the Door Open.
This is straight up 70s Philly soul so Bruno and Anderson put their twist on some Gamble and Huff writing style and Thom Bell arrangement some black lights basement music 😃
We miss nick!!!!!!!!!!!! But all these hosts are are so good too, add a 5th seat and put nick in there and I’ll be happy
I stumbled upon Scary Pockets on UA-cam Music. I'm so happy that it finally brought me here
I like the segment of music recommendations at the start, wouldn't mind that being something you do at least every now and again
I discovered this channel today, learned a lot already. keep it coming :)
it is marvellous all your run about (analysis) of the song the best part is: you do sound like a musician, can you bilieve that all other people (that are not musician) dont hear/feel the same way (as a musician..), they don´t know what´s a modulation (excellently explained), they don´nt know about the harmonies in doubling voices in diferent octaves so it sounds more full, more happy, they/ i.. just know/feel those changes into a new state of mind that is more easy, even more intimate, more enjoyable and happy, it is a great song because of the overall excelency in it, and that was very wisely brought by all 4 of you, thank you guys!!
Great stuff, love the recommendations too. You are all so relaxed and having fun - very watchable.
Damn the production quality on these videos are on. point. Incredibly enjoyable to watch. More more more!!!
More like the best song of 1971. It's like he has catalog of every little style and sound effect since 1950. He just picks an era for next record and writes lyrics in today's language. BUT, I can't be mad at him because he is just so dang good at it. Plus he stands out even more because so much of his competition is sterile and quantized while he writes music that breathes and moves. He's amazing.
I love the information snippets so much
This is great, insightful, educational and really fun! Lawrence is my request. Great live, very talented, soulful, funky, just like Pockets!
Berklee grad, musician / producer etc and I'll put it all on the line and say yes absolutely without question the best song of the year. My name on it.
I'm with Dannielle, Motown still has my heart in a strong hold. Great reaction, Thanks 🙏🏻 Love what Bruno and Anderson are doing with this album, you should check out and react to the 2nd single SKATE. Stay safe, big hugs from Sydney Australia. 🐨💞👏🏻
i love how you guys drilled this down! For a non pro like me, this is a great learning experience of how beautifuly done this song is! Thank you and i hope you do one for the new song Smoking Out The Window soon!
gives me goosebumps when Real Prosss appreciate the music genius bruno and his friends are
I can almost remember back far enough in my music theory youth...thank you for pulling it out!
This discussion is what I need!. Poor me I just discovered this channel. But thank you!
Wow, great reaction! I'm a huge fan of Bruno Mars & i love Andy ( Anderson ) too. Please consider reacting to their 2nd single "SKATE". Thanks in advance!
This was SICK
Formal request!
black pumas: colors
I loved LOVED that you gave a recommendation at the beginning. Thanks!
I love this song so much! It really is the Newtown sound! Thanks so much for doing this series, it's a lot of fun.
My request for review/reaction is All I Need by Jacob Collier with Mahalia and Ty Dollar $ign.
This is amazing! First of all, I always see the musicians/bv in concerts/shows/videos and wish I would know what they were thinking, so this is so great;) and secondly, I just love that the focus is on the music and not the lead singers/celebrities, I love all the education bits, all in all awesome channel.
Greetings from Salzburg, Austria ;)
So can we see a Smoking out the window reaction!! Cant wait .. Sorry had to comment here
You guys are so much fun! I loved this! I just discovered Scary Pockets and thought I'd hit heaven. And now this! And Mario - I always love seeing you. You are the best! But I've got to have your shirt - isn't that flamingos? Just love it!
I paused the video. I can't believe I had to wait for over seven freaking minutes for you to mention the phenomenal old school vibe this song has. GEEZ!
I have watched to so many Reaction channels, but this channel is really good, I'm enjoying how they add details on screen and little demo videos in the middle for better understanding. You have got a NEW SUBSCRIBER 🥳🎉
This dissection of the song is a masterclass of analyzing a structure of a piece. Genius peeps.
