    @nawitus It does need to be mentioned that Chevy is currently working on a direct injection version of it's line of LS engines (Corvette, camaro, manaro, ute, ect.) And next stage after that line hits the road is for the LS engine to be adapted to DOHC's. My guess is that by that time ford's 5.0L will be producing around 500hp instead of 412hp.

    For big power at WOT, a carburetor is still hard to beat. EFI gets you reliability and better fuel delivery control under a broader range of conditions and throttle positions. Depending on your application, a carb is still a very good choice.

      Not much point in that. The LS architecture was a big step up from the Gen 1, but it is not the same compared to the BBC. There are 24 degree BBC heads now that flow over 500 CFM, no point trying to build a big block LS.
      Want to go custom? 481X is the game.

  • @Wonderbread1023

    @GerryK61 Used to work Tech for Summit racing and ive heard acouple different reasons. I believe is the sudden vacuum drop from the roots. Engine stays at idle but the roots 'self accelerate' the engine. Idle circuit of the carb only supports so much fuel until the idle comes back down, then the engine catches and spins up again...and again. Blower surge kills the vacuum at idle, idle drops to decent vacuum and then surges back up again.

    @nawitus Maybe on the crash standards, but many vehicles sold in EU are NOT allowed in the US because of emissions. Which mustang 2010 or 2011, because the 2010 still has the anemic -350hp SOHC 3V 4.6L while the 2011 has the 412hp DOHC 5.0L. I'll agree that 412hp is rather low for DOHC's and VVT, but this IS the first installment of the new coyote 5.0L. Jaguar's 4.2L didn't make near as much hp as it does now when it was first released.

    @nawitus Might I mention that the engines powering every US sports/muscle car is built with the full intention of it's owner modifying the engine. for that reason all but a select few engines are built making only about 65% - 75% of the power they are built to handle, there is no reason to put overly exotic components in something if they are more than likely to be replaced. As for the engine in the video, NRE over-builds their engines then tunes them back down for great streetability.

    why not run it on e85 that way you don't need race gas and pump gas tune

  • @Dr_Xyzt
    @Dr_Xyzt 11 років тому +2

    On the track, you're using a fairly narrow RPM range, say 4500-6500. It's cheap enough to just run carbs a little fat. 30hp loss on a 300hp engine is kind of an issue, but a 60hp loss on a 1200hp engine, who cares. Of course with EFI, the throttle response would be much more nasty.

  • @BigRed10287
    @BigRed10287 14 років тому

    @nawitus You left out two very important factors in your equation of acceleration, weight + aerodynamics. For a formula 1 car a 20,000rpm Cosworth engine is the perfect application because of the vehicles almost non existing weight and superior aerodynamics. In the case of classic cars which weigh much more and sometimes have the aerodynamics of a wall, a high torque low revving engine is best suited for the job. If you built a honda use a high rpm motor, if you build a Impala use a BBC.

  • @dxguy

    Nice. I thought my project was over-the-top... Are you running 4 coils with waste firing with the 60-2 timing teeth, or do you run 8 coils and sense the cam position? I'm finishing a Ford FE 482 with 8-71 and same Electromotive box, but with 4 coils in waste firing configuration. Pulleys for 6/10 lbs boost on 91/100 octane. Design goal is 650/950 hp. Your thoughts on ignition? Thanks, dd

  • @BigRed10287
    @BigRed10287 14 років тому

    @nawitus Yes the larger the engine the more fuel it will need to a smaller engine of comparable build. Consider this though. If an engine is making great hp per liter then yes you can make as much power as most V8's but the trade off is that to make that power you either have to rev the engine too high to get good mpg, or you have to turbocharge them and that sacrifices mpg because of the extra fuel needed for the extra air. Without either you have to hold the pedal to the floor just to speed up

    572ci with a 14-71.
    Why the hell would ANYONE stick 4150 style carbs on that unless the plan was strictly pump fuel, low boost and low rpm??? I don't care what was done to those carbs, they in no way can hope to deliver on that deal.
    4500 series carbs would allow an engine of this size and a 14-71 to get much closer to it's power potential.......on either race, or pump fuel.

      HELLFISH actually believes the blade and venturi of a 4150 can hope to deliver the A/F demands of a 572ci engine topped with a 14-71. In a low boost/power/rpm combination........sure, but NEVER happen when trying to max performance.
      I I drive around town with a 1740hp screw blown 526ci HEMI, w/carbs. A fairly mild package to remain streetable. What's your combination of choice???

  • @mortachaiepstein3584
    @mortachaiepstein3584 5 років тому

    Hey Nelson, what mic are you using to capture those magnificent noises? I think it's not up to the task of capturing something that loud and I hear the microphone distorting. Never underestimate the importance of the sound quality of your videos, as many people don't actually *watch* the videos, but rather, like me, simply listen to the videos as they're doing something else. Might I suggest a Royer R10, a ribbon mic (old technology, yes, but still very good) that has a SPL rating of 160dB. It's $500 and the ribbon may have to be replaced after about 10 years, but with Royer, the first re-ribboning is on the house. Another reason I think a Royer R10 would be great for you is the fact that the highest frequencies, i.e. the ones that will make your ears bleed, are "rolled-off." Ribbon mics are known for low-end bass response and taming harsh high-end frequencies.
    Running a seperate mic and camera does come with its challenges, especially if you're not good with electronics. That said, if you're from SoCal, there are 10,000 guys within one mile who know how to do stuff like that and are always looking for a side job, and setting up a camera and mic setup is easy for them.

    • @mortachaiepstein3584
      @mortachaiepstein3584 5 років тому

      Also, when you're talking, nothing beats a lavalier mic. A lav mic is one that you wear, and some of them even come with 1/8" stereo jacks to plug *directly* into a camera, no expertise necessary.

What is the advantage of installing this way?the engine of the video is not Intercooled right?I saw some supercharged intercooled engines and they are very high an engine with the carburetor mounted that way and Intercooler will be really high.

    @nawitus Not to mention that my point was that NO current V8 Cadillac make anywhere close to that little power so you point is very imature by comparing a discontinued engine to a modern engine. Case and point. The current standard for a NA performance V6 is 300hp, only one auto maker (Chrysler) in America will fail that standard since Chevy's 3.6 V6 (which by the way is the standard baseline engine for ALL currently made Cadillac models) makes 304hp and Fords 3.7 V6 makes 305hp.

    Whats the right hand lever for?

  • @BigRed10287
    @BigRed10287 14 років тому

    @nawitus It's only a band aid on a bullet wound. Both my parents mazda 6's make 160 and have 5speed automatics, even with the torque multiplication from the transmission it still requires much more torque to effectively push though the air at 70 and have some simblence of acceleration if you need it. The aerodynamics of the modern cars does help a little, but they are still very lacking from what's possible. And until auto makers finally fix that, I'm going to keep using my trusty muscle car.

  • @BigRed10287
    @BigRed10287 14 років тому

    @nawitus I'm not arguing that V8's are better, just arguing that imported engines are no better than V8's. When a turbocharged 4 cylinder engine is making 1000hp it's now less fuel efficient and streetable than a twin turbo V8, on the same token if a NA V6 is making 350hp it's more than likely more fuel efficient than a NA 350hp V8. Consider this though, with the torque being made from the V8 you barely have to use the throttle to push though air @ 70mph, with the 4 cylinder you have to mash it.

      It can do with or without. I highly doubt he runs sequential ignition so no need.
      Also, a 60-2 has a pretty high resolution, so with a Holley Dominator you can in fact run sequential without a cam sync.
      But at any rate there's no need to make life hard. I run a Dom 60-2 and just use a MSD Dual sync distributor with a flat cap for cam sync. Leaves room for blowers and tunnel rams.

    Gotta love the import guys that think they can compete against American muscle. Here's a bit of trivia for ya, how many European/Import engines do you see in top fuel?

      Yeah on a fully charged battery, then you loose half that. And does a tesla look or sound as good?

    couple questions, if its all digital ignition, is there a distributor? I didn't see one, and if not, what do you put in the distributor hole?

      Nothing.
      You just block it off,

      You simply run a crank trigger and an aluminum slug. The Ecu is handling the timing.

      Liam McInerney you put in a strap-on distributor, of course.

    Why are Diesel engines rated with Horsepower when they Diesel engine doesn't even Rev to more than 3000 RPM.

    There is no way those headers will fit on any normal engine bay, impossiable, it would need to go into a hot rod,whereby the headers get ceramic coated and then connect to the exhaust system, but look how wide the engine with the headers are ? Still a beast set up, but again the headers for such a engine off the shelf maybe restrictive a little if you wanted to to put that in a newer car and also the complete car would need to be strengthened as well, after all that much HP will twist the shape of the car so easy its not funny ? Best of a set up, but so far i have not seen a twin injector set up only one person has done it and with a 14/71 supercharger as well. :)

      Did you completely miss the fact that he said they were fender well headers? It is more than likely for a gasser or the like.
