My Thermostat code has came over a year ago , the temperature gauge come to about 75 C .. on a hot day it will go to the regular 90 in the winter stays at 75 ... car runs fine the check engine come s and goes every now and then ..i was thinking changing it but now i see it cost about 700$ at Audi. Do you thing this is a must fix or it can wait?
Super bitch A thermostat that opens early / stays open too long can affect fuel economy... if that is all it does, then it is not that big of an issue and can be left for a while longer. If it were to stick / stay closed all of a sudden, then you will run into overheating issues... which if not caught in time, can / will cause bigger problems. At minimum keep a close eye on things!
Mine leaked right after this and it was due to my own fault . posting this comments so others don't do the same mistake. I kept seeing coolant above the drivers engine mount. took it all apart and discovered my error . the hard pipe that has the oring in it goes in first against the thermostat. then the other small verticle pipe , then the torx screw into the thermostat. I made the mistake of putting the other pipe first then the coolant pipe. the oring in the coolant pipe does not seat properly if you do them in the wrong order. as the bracket for the coolant pipe is further away from the stat causing it to not seat the oring properly. Not a big deal and cost me a couple of hours and more coolant .. all good now.

Is this a possible reason for code P2181? engine cooling malfunction. My water pump is ok, so i think no overheating, and my temp sensor seems to work needle is smack in the center. However temp seems to take a bit in the morning, my guess its stuck open.
When you were down there replacing the Thermostat, do you remember seeing the knock sensor (G61) , getting a code for it and thinks its down there under the intake, but not sure thanks.. if you know

Coolant temperature sensor, so that the ECM can keep track of how warm the coolant is... that is coming out of the radiator. The ECM also uses that information to determine if the thermostat is working correctly.
My mechanic did this and I noticed there's still a small leak took it back and he said it was fix and still leaking the wierd thing is it only leaks wen the car is cold like sitting for about 8th hours then I noticed the leak any recommendations thanks.
If you can see the exact location of the leak... take a picture of it when it does leak and show the picture to your mechanic. If the leak has to do with the work that was done... it should be covered under warranty. If the leak is from a different area (an area that was not touched during the initial repair) then you might have to pay to have this one resolved.
Great video! What size triple square did you use? I got all the way to the triple square and had to put it back together. Luckily mine is stuck open so it isn't causing any major concerns ,yet. I should get it taken care of before it is too late.

+Spaghettipolicy Cost will vary from shop to shop... labor rate should be similar (but there can be unexpected issues that add extra time). Timing belt is separate cost and wouldn't save much aside from the cooling system being drained already to do the water pump. Sometimes it costs what it costs... will be cheaper than a timing belt failure repair (always keep that in mind).
Hey Thomas.. Great vid.. Hoping to tackle this over the weekend and I'm looking for the correct thermostat. I have the same motor. I've been looking up parts and notice that some of the thermostats have a complete housing with a thermostat unit bolted to it and others have what looks like the housing and thermostat all in one with no bolts/screws on the housing. Is there a difference? Thanks in advance.
+Dave Mitchell The one with the housing, the thermostat can not be removed from the housing... the two are for different versions / setups / production cross-over. Phone the dealer, give them your vin# and get the correct part number (should be different) for your thermostat... then you can google for best price.
Dave Mitchell Push the connector towards the component... while applying pressure, pull back on the release tab & pull the connector off of the component.
Thomas, as a non-mechanic I was able to replace my 2007 A4 B7 Quattro thermostat a while back using your instruction video, it worked perfectly. Thanks so much!! I have to go back in now and replace the oil filter housing gaskets as they're beginning to leak. I would love to swap out the torx and triple square bolts with hex this time as you suggest. Is their a way to find out which which hex sizes I would need prior to doing the repair? I've checked online and in the service manual but haven't found the sizes yet. Is there like an aftermarket hex bolt kit that might have everything I need. Thanks again!
Just remove one of all the sizes and then measure the thickness of the threads & the thread pitch. Most hardware stores should have hex bolts that will match-up.
Hey Thomas. Great videos! I have 2006 2.0T fsi Jetta. Do you know the exact location were the radiator/coolant fan switch is at? The switch has triangle shape connector on one end.

Man.. It took me the better part of 5 hours to change the coolant flange Replace the coolant and pressure up the cooling system for leaks today including the a couple trips to Harbor Freight And Pepboys. I have a couple videos of the flange… It wasent easy but i saved 400 Bucks…

This "part 1" video is 17 minutes... it's called editing. Part 2 is 26 minutes (edited). I / we replace the whole thermostat assembly... not just the part inside, as this is a "sealed housing" / can not be separated. I don't deal with pricing... not all shops have the same hourly rate, currency, markup on parts (everyone marks up parts, grocery stores, furniture stores, shoe stores etc etc). Do what feels right for you / suits your needs. Make sure that the thermostat is the problem... could be a bad water pump.
I was going from engine start to ECT needle pointing at 12 o’clock. Average 55 mph. I guess I will attach OBDII test meter to check it. What should be the full warm up time from a cold start?
Yeah I know, took about an hour and a half. After seeing what I had to remove thanks to your vid. The oem procedure is a joke that would take almost twice the time.
The lower rad hose with the plastic flange that clips to the thermostat? Once the clip is in the unlocked position (removing the clip completely can help) the fitting / hose should slide off. I sometimes hit / tap the hose flange with a long screwdriver or pry bar to knock it free.
@@EXOVCDS Yes, that hose, we used needlenosed pliers to get the clip off. So, do you mean hitting the hose at the connection from the top? Or try hitting it in the direction it comes off of (towards the right)?

+Brandwhack Small cracks in the top surface if you are lucky... missing teeth is also a sign. Always replace earlier than too late.

How much should this repair cost? are there any labor savings if it is done at the same time as the timing belt? thanks for your input.

Buy from a parts supplier that specializes in VW / Audi parts. They will carry good quality aftermarket & genuine parts.
Why dont you replace the coolant flange while your at it? im doing mine and im having a hard time…

55*F OAT > Operating temp 8 minutes. Is this about normal?
After 8 minutes, engine should be warmer.

That bottom hose is a bitch to get off. Do I just need to use more physical strength, or is there some trick like twisting it that needs to be done?

OK I SCAN IT AND THE CODE WAS P2181 COOLING SYSTEM PERFORMANCE AND IS RUNNING COOL AND THE CAR WILL NOT GO OVER 45 MPH.
Might have more than one issue / problem.
